SURFACE PRESSURE - AMANDA PALMER (w JHEREK BISCHOFF & THE BLACK QUARTET)

Amanda Palmer 2022-03-17 | This recording started as a jokey suggestion on one of my patron-only webcasts and then evolved into a DARE. I took the dare. My son, Ash, who is six, is OBSESSED with Encanto and I'd already heard the soundtrack 357 times. The first time I saw Luisa sing this in the film, I cracked inside. I FELT VERY VALIDATED, especially after being a solo parent for a year in a foreign country because of Covid. The recording was made over the course of one VERY LONG day (Feb 22nd, 2022, at Roundhead Studios in Aoteraoa New Zealand), and every second of the process was streamed live to my 12,000 patrons who acted as virtual sounding boards and cheerleaders for me, the studio crew, the Black Quartet, and the arranger/conductor Jherek Bischoff who beamed in from Los Angeles for the whole thing (in a Tuxedo, with a candelabra, in the living room).

This song file will be emailed to patrons and will stream for FREE on all NormCore music platforms, but please be aware: this is basically a non-profit venture. All of the costs for this are covered by my patrons.

To be very clear: the way we are ABLE to create this kind of non-profit work at this level of professionalism is ONLY because of patronage, where thousands of people support one artist (me) to follow her random dreams...like, um, recording a fast and furious Disney cover with a high-end New Zealand string quartet in the fanciest recording studio in town on one week's notice. In no other world is this possible. Patronage makes the dream work.

THE ORANGE MAN IS LEAVING OFFICE! this is the way we celebrated when we found out here in Aotearoa New Zealand...a spontaneous version of "hit the road, jack", originally performed for a friend's CELEBRATION zoom call (that's my friend kya holding the camera).....with matt volunteering to play guitar, me sitting down for five minutes (literally) and scribbling out some lyrics, and everybody singin' along!

this event was held the day after my official show in dunedin...all the people you see are my patrons from the area around dunedin. i've really enjoyed throwing these smaller gatherings with patrons, where we get together, meet, eat, drink, sing...play....and we are so lucky to be here in this country with no masks and no social distancing. may everybody out there be healthy, and we are all sending out love and thanks for a BIDEN VICTORY!!!

too many senseless deaths, people. i'm not a politician, or a cop, or a survivor, but i am an american, and a mom, and an artist. this is what i can do.

100% of the profits from those downloads (it's a $1 or pay-what-you-want)will go to CHANGETHEREF.ORG, a non-profit started by manuel and patricia oliver after their son, joaquin oliver, was murdered during the marjorie stoneman douglas high school shooting in parkland, florida. changetheref.org is under the umbrella of the non-profit March For Our Lives, and is trying to empower younger kids to get into politics and make REAL CHANGE around gun safety.

manuel is also an art-activist, and he created the cover artwork for "everybody knows somebody" in less than two days after he found out what we were doing. i have never felt more honored and emotional collaborating with another artist. i can sing about this and feel all the feelings: but manuel lost his son. i cannot start to imagine how that feels.

making art isn't as direct as voting or calling your congresspeople. but art can get directly into the emotional heart of the matter.

this song was written in response to the insanity going on in our country. gun violence and the deaths of ordinary people all over america is becoming NORMAL.

IT ISN'T NORMAL.

let's call it what it is: a public health crisis. too many senseless deaths. too much pointless tragedy that could be avoided with better, safer, smarter gun laws.

i was able to write and record this song FAST because i knew i could release it immediately using funds from my 15,000+ patrons to cover all the studio costs, the cost of my production team, to pay manuel for his artwork, etc.
