My hope was to find an inexpensive black-and-white film that I can push and pull from 100 to 1600. In this video, I talk about the testing process and share my results. Exposing Both Sides of 35mm Film (EBS Multiple Exposures) Film is more fun 2022-03-13 | In this video, I talk about how to shoot both sides of 35mm film by flipping the film over and exposing both sides, step by step. You can either line up the frames from the front and back, or let the frames be mixed up. I show how to set up the roll for either way. A few notes:- The ISO you choose will vary the colors and blending between the front and back. A good place to start is -1 stop for the front and +1 stop for the backside, but experiment and see what look you like best.- Try using a flag to block off parts of the frame during one of the exposures. How to Take Apart Patterson Tank Film Developing Reels Film is more fun 2022-03-06 | In this video, I give a quick demonstration of how to separate Patterson reels. These plastic film holders from your developing tank can be taken apart to work with different film sizes like 35mm and 120 (some can work with 110). The process is simple, but the twisting direction is important.Steps:1. Hold the reel with both hands in front of you 2. Twist your right hand away from your body 3. Twist your left hand towards your body4. Pull apart each side5. Use the notches on the center spindle to adjust the width6. How to pull rewound film out from a 35mm roll FAST! #shorts Film is more fun 2022-01-23 | In this #shorts video, I show how to remove the leader from a roll and get the film back out of the roll. This is useful if the leader was accidentally rewound back into the roll, if you want to pull the film back out of the canister to shoot the roll again, or you're getting ready to load it onto a developing reel.It only takes a few seconds, and all you need is another negative (or a new roll of film) Step by step Directions:1. Slowly twist the rewound roll near your ear listening for a click2. As soon as it clicks, stop rolling3. Take another (flat) negative a few inches long4. Lick or wet one end of the negative on the emulsion side5. Insert the wet side down into the canister (about 1"-2")6. Slowly roll the canister spool CCW until it pulls the negative piece in7. Keep tension on the spool with your fingers and pinch the negative8. Release the spool tension as you slowly pull the negative back out9. Your leader inside the canister should come out with the negative!Sometimes it takes a few tries, but this method is my go-to and works for me almost 100% of the time.Things to watch out for:- If you need to do this for multiple rolls, use a different section for each new roll. Take two 35mm rolls, one old roll already shot, and one new roll2. Make sure the finished roll has about an inch of film left sticking out 3. Cut the leader end off the new roll. 4. Match up the light brown with dark brown sides of each roll. (Basically, turn the new roll over).5. Use scotch tape to splice the film together.6. Go into a darkroom, or complete this part in a changing bag7. Pull the film out of the new roll a few inches, and then wind that section of film into old roll. Keep pressure on the spindle of the old roll so the canister doesn't unwind.8. When you've reached the end, cut the film of the new roll. 9. If you need a film leader at the end, take the cut-off leader and line it up to re-cut it using scissors.10. Enjoy your super apocalypticly red pictures!-SUBSCRIBE!!! Goodbye Nikon. Film is more fun 2021-11-28 | In this video, I say goodbye to Nikon. After years of shooting with my D750 I've finally decided to sell it along with my F mount glass to transition over to the Fuji X system. I plan on using an XT3 as my main digital body with a Voigtlander Nokton 35mm 1.2, because this pair is the closest thing I can find to my all-time favorite combination- the Nikon F3 and 50mm series E lens. With that said though, I don't think I'm in the majority. More like a laggard clutching old tech! Paint the Town Red Film is more fun 2021-10-31 | In this video, I talk about a new series I'm releasing. It's a set of postcards and prints titled "Paint the Town Red". For the past year, I've shot over 100 images of scenes and locations around my town using redscaled Fuji 35mm, eventually culling down to only a few.Working on this project has been a lot of fun and such a learning experience because aside from making some darkroom prints available, I haven't put together anything like this before. What is a Film Swap? (Featuring Sweet Lou Photography) Film is more fun 2021-09-05 | In this video I talk about film swapping- what it is, how to do it, and why it’s possibly the most fun you can have shooting film with someone else. The example images I included are from a recent film swap I did with @sweet lou photography. Bribing people is always an option. Cake works well. The first person to shoot the roll should load the film into their camera and mark where the shutter window is. (This will make it easier to line up in for the second person).The first person should reduce the iso by one stop (for example on a roll of 400 speed film, shoot the roll at 800 iso)After finishing the roll, the first person will rewind the film (but not all the way!). Leave the leader out just a little bit to allow the second person to load it into their camera.The first person sends the roll to the second person. The second person loads the film lining up the marked out shutter to the window location in their camera. They also reduce their iso 1 stop less. After the second person finishes shooting the roll, they develop or send it off to the lab.BAM! Film swap complete. NIKKORMAT LIGHT? CAMERA LAMP? WTF? (How to DIY) Film is more fun 2021-02-21 | In this video, I show how I built a lamp out of a dead Nikkormat camera. This process should work for a bunch of different film cameras as long as you have a body cap and a shallow light fixture. I'm sure this isn't the only way to create a camera light, but it's what worked for me on this Nikkormat. This was built to be the prize that I'm giving away for the #filmfebruary contest. Tools I usedDremel with cut off wheel, Pliers, Drill, ScrewdriversMaterials needed:Dead film camera, Light socket with shallow base and threaded collar (preferably switched), Body cap, 1/2"x #6 screws (size may vary depending on camera), Plastic adhesiveHow to build it:1. Drill out the body cap the circumference of the socket2. Remove the shutter using pliers3. Remove the mirror and mirror carrier with pliers4. Test fit the socket inside the shutter opening5. The mirror bumper may need to be cut/ ground out using a Dremel tool with a metal cutting wheel6. Route the cord through the opening and mark on the back door where you want the cord to come out7. Drill a pilot hole, then another hole slightly larger than the cord width8. Use the Dremel tool to remove the lip at the bottom portion of the hole you drilled for the cord.9. With the body cap installed apply a small bit of adhesive to the face of the body cap (not shown in video) then clamp the socket ring against the body cap. 10. Drill two pilot holes in the socket ring and install screws to hold the socket in place against the body cap. 11. Route the cord through the hole in the back door 12. Install the LED bulb (I recommend using a 5w bulb or lower) and you're all set!Random info:- I actually built a wooden base for the bottom of this, but ended up not liking how it looked, so I didn't use it. - If you did want the camera facing forwards but not near the surface where its sitting, one option is to put it on a small 6" tripod. -IF YOU FOUND THIS VIDEO USEFUL:1. Kodak Ultramax 400 Redscale and Film Soup Edition Film is more fun 2021-01-31 | The majority of 35mm color film I shoot with is Kodak Ultramax 400, because it's cheap, and I like the look when it's shot straight out of the box. How easy is developing color film? Cinestill TCS1000 first use Film is more fun 2021-01-03 | Hey! In this video, I give my thoughts about the CineStill TCS1000 Temperature Control System after using it for the first time. I've been developing my own color and black and white film at home for a few years, and before trying this unit I would always use a heated pot of water as a way to maintain the chemical and development temperatures. CineStill advertises this unit as "Color Simplified", so I wanted to see just how easy it was to use. To test that theory, I didn't read the instructions, I just popped the unit out of the box and tinkered with it for a moment before developing 7 rolls of film. Spoiler alert- this thing is awesome, and it is without a doubt easy to use. The Best Tip I Know for Developing Film at Home Film is more fun 2020-12-13 | In this video I share what I think is probably the most helpful trick, or 'hack' that I've learned to speed up and simplify loading 35mm film on the development reels. This is also helpful to know if you're film swapping or sending your film over to someone else to shoot before developing. -How to get the film out of a rewound 35mm cassette:1. Take a negative strip or new roll of film2. Wet the emulsion (lighter) side of the old negative3. Insert the wet negative or new leader into the rewound cassette4. Slowly wind the rewound cassette's spool AWAY from the opening5. Once the wet negative starts to get pulled inside STOP spinning6. PULL out the wet negative 7.
