My talk at LibrePlanet 2022, Building and Ethical E-Book: media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/m/building-an-ethical-e-book
I'm the developer of Nantucket E-Books, a site that makes it easier for authors to create and share the best e-books on the planet. I was motivated in large part by my frustration with the proprietary software most e-books require, especially Amazon's KDP platform. I decided that I'd create an e-book that I would want to read, and I knew that I wanted it to run on free software.
My e-book platform, Nantucket E-Books, uses only free software, and does not use DRM of any kind. In addition, the site's FAQ page, and the manual for the Shanty markup language used to write my e-books, are licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License.

The pattern was produced using a computer program I wrote. The program could allow me to make the pattern for any size area.
Dragon Curves are used in the novel Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, as a way of explaining how the simple structure of the park and its dinosaurs belies hidden and unforseen complexity. A Dragon Curve has simple rules, but creates intricate, exponentially-growing patterns.
Because of its fractal nature, a Dragon Curve fractal can be scaled to any size and still look good. My tile pattern is one many possible patterns.
The Lego tiles were purchased online in a custom order. The Dragon Curve program was created using vanilla JavaScript and the HTML5 Canvas element.
ndhf.github.io/DragonCurves
The story of how I tiled my coffee table in Legos with the fractal from Jurassic Park.
This coding project combined several passions of mine: Legos, recreational math, and puzzles. I became interested in fractals as a kid, after reading A.K. Dewdney's The Armchair Universe, and more so after reading James Gleick's Chaos, an introduction to Chaos Theory.
Reading Jurassic Park for a book club with friends introduced me to the Dragon Curve.
My Dragon Curve program was made using Vanilla JS and HTML5 Canvas.
The program itself is quite simple, which is the point of chaos theory: very simple systems can produce complex, unpredictable results, and complexity can arise from very simple systems.
I wrote the music for this video, unless otherwise specified.

While I am a fan of this movie, that doesn't mean it's a good movie. This is a silly, silly movie, which makes it very entertaining. It's also one of the few movies to really embrace the spirit of cyberpunk.

I am proud to announce my new historical novel, November in America: A Story of Thanksgiving. It covers the Colorado coal strike of 1927, and its deadly conclusion at the Columbine Mine, north of Denver.
This edition of the book features illustrated maps by Mister V. I am a big fan, and his maps add a lot to the book.

This is a fun song to play, especially with the hammers-on in the chorus. I make a few timing mistakes, in particular with the lead-up to the choruses.
Special thanks to Guitar Hut in Lafayette, Colorado.

The tape ran out as I was recording the pick cover. I will (again) record it at a later date.
Next week, one more Police song: Message in a Bottle.
The original bass track for this song was an electric bass multi-tracked with an upright bass, giving it some extra heft. For this cover, I used the bridge pickup and turned up the tone knob.
Special thanks to Guitar Hut in Lafayette, Colorado.
http://guitarhutco.com
I wasn't happy with my pick-style cover of this song, I will re-record it at some point.
Next week's cover is another Police song: Roxanne.
This is a song where the bass line, in spite of its simplicity, holds the entire song together. The chord changes are only implied by the bass notes.
My fingerstyle cover of With Or Without You can be found here:

Special thanks to Guitar Hut in Lafayette, Colorado, for allowing me record there. It makes for a better background than my last video's white wall.

I have enjoyed playing bass, and thought I might upload some of my covers as I learn the instrument.
I also want to do comparisons between fingerstyle playing, and playing with a pick, since it's such a long-standing debate in the bass world.
Next week's cover: Every Breath You Take by The Police.
