How to use you iPad as a drawing tablet for Windows PC and Mac...with Astropad Studio (Review)
updated
I spent some time testing the feature and compared Second Screen with EasyCanvas, which I've mentioned on the channel a few times.
Second Screen is available on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7, S8, S9 and S10.
Recommended tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab S9FE+ for the larger screen

My full review of the Galaxy Tab S9FE for artists here: drawyourweapon.com/galaxy-tab-s9-fe-artist-review
Thanks to this feature, you get so much more versatility from the Galaxy Tab. It's great as a portable standalone device, but being able to use to as an extended display and drawing tablet as well is what makes it an especially valuable part of my setup.
I do recommend getting a little extra screen real estate if you can by going with the Galaxy Tab S9FE+: amzn.to/4cxNqRT
Apps used in this include :
EasyCanvas: www.eaynlight.com
An alternative to Second Screen that will let you connect via USB-C for a more a more stable drawing experience.
Magma: magma.com
Great for drawing with friends
Clip Studio Paint: kqzyfj.com/click-100330287-14310560
Great for digital drawing and comics

So far I'm really enjoying the drawing experience of this and am impressed with what the Magic Drawing Pad offers for the price. The pen has a great pressure response, and the surface is a real treat to draw on. I would, however, like to see something more high-performing in future with a few extra features in the pen. I'll explain more on this, and give my full review, soon.
For now, you can find more info about the tablet here: shrsl.com/4j8v7 (affiliate link)
App used is @InfinitePainter which you can find on Google Play and Apple App Store.

I use the Luna Display dongle for extending my Windows laptop display over to the iPad Pro: shop.astropad.com/products/luna-display?sca_ref=1916067.vHjoDmLij0
And Astropad Studio for making it a highly responsive and customizable drawing tablet for my desktop software: astropad.com/product/studio
When I have to head out, the iPad on it's own is powerful enough for high-res painting on the go.
But in all honesty, you do not need an iPad Pro for this level of versatility. I'll chat more in another video about the setup and how a Galaxy Tab could do more or less the same thing for half the price.

Rather disappointingly, this tablet lacks anything to really suggest that it is a Huion device. But for young, casual doodlers, this could still function well enough for some light drawing and painting. For more serious pixel pushers though, there are better value options out there to consider.
I do hope Huion tries again though.

I use EasyCanvas almost every day. Sometimes it’s only to use my iPad as an extended display, but occasionally as a drawing tablet too. EDIT: As of version 4.8.4 released in Oct 2024, Apple Pencil hover is now supported by EasyCanvas.
(NOTE: I was not able to get EasyCanvas to work on MacOS.)

I found this on special while in Malaysia at the cheapest price I've seen for a drawing tablet. Prices will vary depending on where you are in the world.
Normally I wouldn't recommend a tablet of this size, but for some, the Deco Fun XS might just work if it's all you can get your hands on.
XPPEN has a few other offerings in their drawing tablet line up that i would recommend, so check out the rest of the playlist for a few reviews.

In this video I chat about some of the reasons that I think you should paint a few still life scenes, whether you're a beginner or intermediate artist, traditional or digital. Apart from just being a relaxing subject, it can also be a great tool for improving your painting skill and preparing you for your bigger ideas.

What a blast. Video quality is a little on the low side because of zooming in on the screen recording.
Time to go paint another one.
This week we're doing stone skulls.
Quite a challenge for the available time but not a bad result. The idea certainly ins't perfect paintings during these sessions anyway. But we all put ourselves out there to learn together.

Pretty happy with the way this digital painting I did in 2020 came out.
Features the hoopoe bird which I hadn't painted before but have always been fascinated by.
Painted in Adobe Photoshop.
Don't recall how long I spent on it.
This still life painting was done during a study session I hosted this week for digital painting beginners.
I find studies like this really valuable for improving my understanding of light, material, shapes and texture so that that I can tackle my serious paintings with more confidence.
The painting was done in Magma, a collaborative online painting app.

If you're struggling with confidence while you try to grow your drawing and painting skills, think of yourself as a video game character on the quest to gain more XP and conquer different challenges.
Even if you don't succeed the first time, every attempt gains you more experience, and soon enough, you'll level up!
#drawing #painting #artblock #arttalk #artadvice
The causes for art block will vary from one person to the next, but the three main ones for me have to do with self-doubt and confidence as an artist, being overloaded with content, and not really knowing what I want to say with my art at times.
Maybe your experience of it is similar to mine, so hopefully this helps some of you better understand it and feel encouraged to fight through that art block.
We're all different so I'd love to hear from you in the comments about what triggers art block for you and how you deal with it.

The painting:
The digital painting timelapse shown in this art block video is still a work in progress. It's been a while since I spent time on a painting of my own but I'm not sure where it's going yet.
Software: Clip Studio Paint.
I've never tried to do a full painting in in Clip Studio Paint, and it's about time I gave it a shot. It did slow me down quite a bit though trying to get familiar with new software.

You can find my review of it here: youtu.be/43dZC0j0T1k
More info here: shrsl.com/4197d (affiliate link)
It's taking me a while to get through this painting, partly because Clip Studio Paint is new software for me, and because I didn't have the clearest idea for what I want the final piece to look like. So it's going through a fair few changes along the way.
This painting isn't close to finished yet. I really want to spend time on rendering finer details on this one.

Understanding perspective is essential for creating artworks with depth and believable proportions. It's not just about drawing boxes accurately but understanding the space that objects occupy.

Perspective is one of the fundamentals of drawing that we all need to sharpen up on and keep in mind as we go forth on our digital art journies. It's not just about drawing boxes correctly, but understanding space, and how things will fit within a scene in a way that makes sense.

After seeing more of these beautiful hoopoe birds appearing in my garden recently, I had to do a painting that featured one. They always held some mystery for me as a kid, so even today I get a little excited when I see one.
