And the Dream Ended

Afshin Cohen 2022-09-23 | This particular piece came to me in a dream, as if it was a soundtrack to the experience I was having. After waking up in the middle of night from the dream, I went straight to the piano and wrote down the music as best as I could remember it. Later that day I made a recording of it, and today I present it to you here.

I wrote a poem about the dream and put it together with the music in a video. The footage you see is from one of my favorite nature walks around where I live.

This dream was about a brief but joyful moment I had with my father in some beautiful part of the world. Perhaps it was the Pacific Northwest in the U.S., one of my favorite areas of the country. The dream seemed like a fitting way to recall a moment with a loved one who has passed on, in a type of place loved by both individuals.

This little tune was written in October of 2014 and given the title "Riverside", the name of the street I used to live on in Los Angeles at that time. This busy 4-lane street of heavy traffic where my home was situated serves as a major thoroughfare through several parts of the city and follows the course of the Los Angeles river. I used to imagine what it would have looked like if the river was still thriving in the midst of the busy metropolis, with trees, chirping birds and all. Now, you don't really notice a river, more so a concrete ditch that supports the life of what is left of it... poor water. Maybe one day it'll look like how I used to imagine it, similar to the cover image of this music track which was taken from a river near my hometown in Atlanta. Until then I offer this little piece of music as a tribute to my former LA neighbor, the river.
