WORLDS OLDEST SEPHARDIC SYNAGOGUE!: DUBROVNIK, CROATIA (4K) Andys Awesome Adventures 2023-05-28 | The Old Synagogue in Dubrovnik, Croatia is the world's oldest Sephardic Synagogue still in use today and it's the second oldest synagogue in Europe. It was first established in 1352 and gained legal status in 1408. Sephardic Jews are Spanish Jews who were expelled from Spain and surrounding areas after 1492. Today, the main floor is still a place of worship for the High Holy Days and special occasions, but the synagogue is mainly a museum, which features many Jewish centuries-old artifacts. Jews faced persecution in the Dubrovnik Ghetto over the centuries and today, there are so few Jews left in Dubrovnik, this synagogue doesn't even have it's own rabbi. Like the rest of Old Town Dubrovnik, the synagogue has suffered damage over the centuries, from the Great Earthquake of 1667, World War II, and the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990's, If fact, in 1992, an artillery shell went through the roof of the synagogue, causing many objects to be transferred to a safer place. He also built an aqueduct leading into the fountain that was the main water source for the city until the end of the 19th century. A short walk on the Stradun brings you to Little Onofrio Fountain, which was completed after Big Onofrio Fountain. It supplied water to what was then the main marketplace of the city. WHY CROATIANS AND TOURISTS LOVE KORČULA! (4K) Andys Awesome Adventures 2023-03-01 | Korčula, Croatia, was one of the highlights of our Adventures Croatia island-hopping cruise. In fact, our crew said that Korčula was their favorite island to visit. So why do Croatians and tourists alike love Korčula? As you'll see, Korčula is a combination of 15th century history and architecture combined with 21st century fun. As you approach the Old Town from the Adriatic Sea, you can see the medieval walls that surround the town. When you walk through the main gate, you go back in time, as many of the buildings were built in the 15th-16th centuries. In fact, the highlight of my visit to Korčula was climbing the narrowest steps known to man, in the 500 year-old St. Mark's Cathedral Bell Tower. The views from the top were incredible. Just as exciting was climbing a ladder straight up in a medieval building to enter the popular rooftop bar, Massimo. Goran introduced me to two shop owners who each gave us a very interesting tour of their shops: one was an olive oil/wine shop, and the other was a coral jewelry shop. We then arrived at one of the oldest churches in Korčula, St. Peter's Church, and next door is the house of Marco Polo, or is it? STUNNING BLUE CAVE IN CROATIA! WHY SPLIT, CROATIA IS SO POPULAR! (4K) Andys Awesome Adventures 2023-01-15 | Split is one of the most popular places to visit in Croatia for a few reasons: it features a beautiful harbor, the history and architecture of its Middle Ages Venetian and Ancient Roman influence, and its nightlife. Make no mistake, Split is a bustling and happening place, both day and night. In this video, you'll see the harbor that welcomes you to Croatia's second largest city, which started out as a Greek colony. We'll visit 15th century People's Square, with its Venetian-style palaces, Old City Hall, and an unusual clock with 24 Roman numerals. We then see Peristyle or Emperor's Square where Roman Emperor Diocletian (284-305 A.D.) would stand on his balcony as his subjects bowed down to him. We go inside ornate St. Domnius Cathedral, where Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum was originally built, and you'll also see its distinctive 187-foot-tall bell tower. After that, we go underneath the cathedral to visit the Crypt of St. Lucy, the Patron Saint of Blindness, and above ground to visit the former Temple of Jupiter which was converted to the Baptistery of St. John in the sixth century. After that, we go deeper into Diocletian's Palace to visit the quarters, the South Wall, the private chambers of Diocletian and his family, the Northwest Tower, the Northern Gate, and a 28 foot statue of a 10th century bishop. (4K) Andys Awesome Adventures 2022-11-16 | I don't think I've ever been to a city with as many unique and offbeat museums than Zagreb, Croatia. I visited four of Zagreb's museums: the Museum of Hangovers, Museum of Illusions, Museum of Broken Relationships, and Museum of Chocolate. The museums are small so you can visit all four of them in one day if you'd like to. The Museum of Hangovers (Muzej Mamurluka) features several objects along with the drunken stories behind them. It also gives you an idea what it's like to be drunk as you wear Virtual Reality goggles which simulate drunkenness when walking around the museum, or driving a car on a simulator. The Museum of Illusions (Muzej Iluzija) features over 70 exhibits with over 40 optical illusions. My favorite rooms were the ones with mirrors: The Infinity Room, the Table of Clones, and the Anti-Gravity Room. The Museum of Broken Relationships (Muzej prekinutih veza) is dedicated to failed love relationships. Exhibits ivnclude personal objects from all over the world left over from former lovers, accompanied by their stories. Objects include wedding dresses, a parachute rig, a front door, a cell phone, a Godzilla doll, an espresso machine, an exercise bike, and much more!
