i had the huge honor of collaborating with Maddie Lim, who designed and built a lovely custom MIDI visualizer for my song. the video takes place in dreamy Plumeria City. as you relax in a rooftop pool, your mind begins to wander, and you see a colorful, musical world...
by the way, i started a record label called Infloresce Records for digital fusion music like this. if you like my music, you might enjoy our releases!

We had fun recording this holiday classic, turning the two singers of the song into my piano and surasshu's chip lead! Although we feel that the original lyrics are dated, we enjoy the musical interplay between the characters of the song--two adults bantering in a loose, improvisatory manner. We both wish you warm and happy holidays (because baby, it's cold outside!)

Cruisin (Interstate 5 Remix)aivi2015-05-06 | Liner Notes: -- We love Totaka! -- We worked on this remix in between projects for a year. -- When we lived in separate countries, we played Animal Crossing: New Leaf together and went to K.K. Slider concerts on Saturdays. We requested "K.K. Cruisin'" every time. -- We started this remix in an attempt to answer the question, "Why is K.K. Cruisin' so great?" After listening to it and studying it, we determined that, for us, the heart of the song was its groove. The same five chords repeat throughout the entire song (five extremely creative chords--Mr. Totaka is always a step ahead of us all), and it never changes in rhythm or energy level. We used that concept as the main inspiration for our arrangement, where instead of ramping up the energy for the chorus like we'd normally do, we pulled back and settled into a comfortable groove. Keeping "still" was a big exercise in confidence for both of us. -- We named our remix after the road trips we'd take together down I-5, between San Francisco and LA. Those trips felt like mini-vacations for us (though we still worked on the road and in our hotel room) and making this song has been a mini-vacation for us, too.

Slider song, and one of the most harmonically complex covers that I've played. Kazumi Totaka is one of my biggest inspirations, in the way he blends elegance and complexity so effortlessly.
I haven't uploaded any covers for a long time, but I promise I have good reasons! 8 months ago, surasshu and I were hired by Cartoon Network to compose the music for a show called Steven Universe. It's so amazing and positive--please watch it! I'm also currently working on several indie game soundtracks. I can't wait for you all to be able to play them one day.

We were invited to contribute to the official FEZ remix album by our friend and talented composer, Disasterpeace. This was me and surasshu's first time working together in person! The end result is different than what we're both used to - much more loose and improvisatory-sounding, as you'd expect from two people making music in a room together.
We named our arrangement "Come Back" in reference to both the words "Beacon" and "Forgotten".
Normally, surasshu and I collaborate across the planet from one another. But this week has been special: surasshu is here! This is our music video for "Lonely Rolling Star" from Katamari Damacy, with me on keys and surasshu putting his robotic powers to use as my one-man lights crew.
Our cute 'n' bass arrangement was inspired by m-flo's song, "Miss You". We both love the original "Lonely Rolling Star" by Yoshihito Yano and wanted to express our feelings with our cover. We hope you enjoy it!

"The Girl in the Nebula" is my arrangement of "Part 5" from Preschtale, a beautiful progressive chiptune suite by C-jeff. My cover is largely inspired by the Japanese band Asturias. With the exception of the cello, all of it was performed freely on my Roland RD700NX.
Chris came to visit from Australia and we made a video with Mitch (MaximumHamburgers)! The three of us jammed and put together a medley of 2 songs I adore, "Make Eggs, Throw Eggs" from Yoshi's Island and a medley of Yoshi's Story tunes (as heard in Super Smash Bros.)
Thank you Mitch for setting up all of the recording gear, Chris for making the video, and much appreciation for my neighbors who let us make noise for one special day! Also present in the room at some point were YouTubers Josh Chiu (joshi3joshi), Michaela (mklachu) and Daniel Ngo. Hanging out with everyone was fun!
Squeezing one last song in before the new year! This is my cover of the awesome "Monkey Watch" theme from Rhythm Heaven Fever on the Wii, composed by Masami Yone. For those of you who have never played the game, in this particular stage, you are a tiny monkey... riding the second hand inside of a guy's watch... high-fiving other monkeys to make the clock tick. The whole game is hilariously cute - and the music rules.
I made the backing track, borrowing a couple clock samples. Hope you enjoy!
Happy holidays and best wishes to you all for the new year ♪

This is my jazzy take on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Tale of the Kalendar Prince", and the title theme for the game 1931: Scheherazade at the Library of Pergamum! The game was just released by Black Chicken Studios. Black Chicken Studios was a real pleasure to work with, and they have a wonderful educational philosophy. ♥
The original Rimsky-Korsakov piece is from his symphonic suite, Scheherazade, which was inspired by the One Thousand and One Nights stories. This is the only track that I did for the game. I hope you like it!

Last month at GDC, I met surasshu, a game composer and sound designer. We wanted to experiment with blending chiptune and piano, so we collaborated on "Mabe Village" from Link's Awakening. The whole process of collaborating was so much fun! I laughed constantly when we talked and couldn't keep a straight face in most of my video outtakes. Even in this video, I still end up with a big goofy smile!

Last month, Chris came to visit the USA and we made some videos together. This is my favorite duet of ours, the sweet and haunting "Ballad of the Wind Fish" from Link's Awakening.
I got really emotional while I was playing this - it all felt very genuine. (It probably didn't help that Chris' violin was making my heart melt, too!) We're thinking of naming this arrangement "Dreams of Home."
Please check out Chris' work. He's both extremely talented and a very kind person, and I'm very glad that we've become friends: http://youtube.com/8Amaterasu8
Aivi's website: http://aivitran.comAivi Tran - Duke Moiraiaivi2012-02-25 | Another submission to Project VGM, a collaborative soundtrack for an RPG! Duke Moirai is a character that the heroes meet during their quest. The prompt was to compose music for a scene where the characters meet Moirai, but I ended up writing a theme song for Moirai himself instead since I liked his personality (oops)! Along with a tragic past, here's a bit of his description:
"Moirai is an intelligent man, versed in various subjects and languages from his studies in neighboring Wesdrow. He's a skilled mage, specializing in wind-type spells. He knows that he's quite smart, but when amongst people, he doesn't like to show it, for the comfort of the people around him. He doesn't want people to think he's a know-it-all but knows that most already believe he is. He hates how he has to make "rightful" decisions for the dukedom, even if the actions required are not just and are brutal."
Many thanks to Chris Woo (8Amaterasu8) for recording the viola, and Chris Geehan of HyperDuck for his mixing advice (though I still butchered the mix anyway!)

We all love this song, and I've personally wanted to play it for years but have been too intimidated to record it. I got to perform it in the best way I could've ever imagined: with Lara's warrior princess musical prowess, Chris' gorgeous melodies, and my twinkly (star)bits!
Hope you enjoy listening to the music as much as I enjoyed making it, with these two amazing friends and musicians!

Anthony Morgan & Stéphanie Desbourdes)aivi2012-01-30 | One of my submissions to Project VGM, a collaborative soundtrack for an imaginary RPG. Thena is the hometown of the game:
"A small, peaceful town of the Wesdrow nation. Upon reaching adulthood, citizens are required to enlist in Wesdrow's reserve militia. While the town has maintained this loyalty to Wesdrow over the years without much protest, the town itself sits far from the dangers of large-scale war. It is surrounded on one side by a forest and opens into the Faris Plains on the other."
I had the great privilege of collaborating with Anthony Morgan and Stéphanie Desbourdes, two wonderful composers from France who performed guitar and bass on the piece.

It's been way too long since I've played any music from Super Mario Galaxy! Please enjoy the beautiful "World 3 Map" theme by Mahito Yokota, with personal touches.
I came up with a lot of the arrangement ideas while I was at work, so you can see all the random scraps of paper in front of me where I jotted things down!
"Humoresque of a Little Dog" also known as "Buy Somethin', Will Ya!" from the Earthbound/Mother series. Sam is a good friend of mine (we went to school together!) who also composes and plays guitar/bass. We finally got around to recording a duet together, a cute theme that we attempted to arrange with a slight gypsy jazz influence.
For some strange reason, I thought it'd be fun to sneak the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" into my solo... Hope you enjoy!
I recorded this cover in tribute to one of my favorite childhood games--Bomberman 64. The "Rainbow Palace" stage in the game has an eerie, lonely beauty surrounding it, so I wanted to capture a cold and sparse feeling with this arrangement. Rainbow Palace is also home to my favorite character of all time, the game's villain Sirius!
P.S. Hands up if you were a troll in multiplayer mode, setting bombs up next to where your friends were supposed to re-appear as ghosts.
"Green Hill Zone" from Sonic the Hedgehog, composed by Masato Nakamura... 2-player mode!
I'm trying to be less picky about my arrangements, so I can upload videos more frequently... I told myself, "don't think, just play, Aivi!" So, instead of carefully planning out the arrangement beforehand like I usually do, I hit "record" with just that little yellow post-it note to help me. If you've ever wondered what me attempting to have fun, and trying to improvise, and dressing in the colors of the characters, and making mistakes, and editing the video poorly, and hoping that my keyboard won't explode looks like... this is it!
A short sketch - I woke up in the middle of the night feeling really sad, so I ended up writing this before falling asleep again. Almost all of it was improvised using the musical typing keyboard on Garageband.
My take on "To Zanarkand" by Nobuo Uematsu. I've received a lot of requests to perform this one over the years, so I wanted to challenge myself with this question: "How would I make a piano arrangement of an already-piano song?" Hope you enjoy!
"Planet Wisp - Act 1" from Sonic Colors, composed by Kenichi Tokoi. I'm excited that I had the chance to collaborate with one of my favorite musicians in the universe, Dave Harris (aka Blitz Lunar), an extremely talented sequencer and composer. He transcribed the "Planet Wisp" theme and I performed the piano part and wrote the solos alongside it.
I started out in the game music community as a MIDI sequencer in the late 90’s, submitting transcriptions of game music to the Video Game Music Archive. I have a lot of admiration and respect for MIDI artists, as it requires both precision with one’s ear and a command of the technology. The art form is sentimental to me, and I wouldn’t be here today without it!
Did you catch the Green Hill Zone reference in the piano? How about pixel Sonic on the right? (Inspired by http://snakestitch.wordpress.com)

The Basic Step theme from Wii Fit is so catchy and charming. I couldn't resist!

http://aivitran.comAivi Tran - Cavern Tangoaivi2011-02-16 | "Cavern Tango" has a history: it began life as a rushed homework assignment, then it was polished into a cave theme for an RPG soundtrack, and now it has evolved into an elaborate piano solo. There are so many ways that I can interpret this piece, and I'm not sure which one is its "true" form. But I had fun recording this... and I really wanted to smash my piano!
My take on "Rainbow Castle" from Mario Party for the Nintendo 64, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. I loved the Mario Party soundtrack as a child, and this board's theme was my favorite. When I was 13, I submitted a MIDI of this piece to vgmusic.com!
A simple medley that I made to cheer up a friend, with some of my favorite themes. Hiroki Kikuta's Secret of Mana soundtrack is so inspirational. You can tell what piece I love the most by the fact that I spent a whole 2 minutes on it!
1. Together Always 2. Color of the Summer Sky 3. Fear of Angels 4. A Bell is Tolling
"Besaid Island" from the FFX Piano Collections, composed and arranged by Masashi Hamauzu. The FFX arrangements are so inspirational! The original theme from the game has a short repeating motif. This imaginative piano version transforms that motif into an expansive, beautiful musical piece. It's my favorite arrangement from the album, and I hope you'll enjoy it just as much!

http://aivitran.comAivi Tran - Motivic Transformationaivi2009-05-14 | Small homework assignment from a theory class. The exercise was to take a pattern of notes - a "motif" - and spin it into an entire piece, by writing it backwards, forwards, higher, lower, in a different rhythm, etc. I use a few motifs, but my main one is only 4 notes long!
