Esta película, escrita por Ulises Pérez Aguirre (productor y guionista de "Roy del Espacio", conocida ahora como la peor película animada de la historia del cine mexicano) y dirigida por Fernando Durán en las escenas live-action, es un título bastante particular en el cine mexicano, pues mezcla animación y unas cuantas escenas en live-action. A pesar de esto, en Google apenas si hay referencias sobre ella y no tiene ficha en IMDb.
La animación que conforma prácticamente los 80 minutos de la cinta es una película de anime de 1981, llamada Shunmao Monogatari Tao Tao (シュンマオ物語 タオタオ). No está claro cómo Aguirre adquirió la licencia, o por qué escogió esta cinta en particular, pero lo que está claro fue que se hizo un doblaje y re-edición de la película, cambiando el trágico final del material original y alterando el orden de algunas escenas. No es muy difícil afirmar que se decidió importar esta película dado el furor que causaron en México la llegada de varios pandas al Zoológico de Chapultepec a principios de los 80. Tal fue la fiebre que, Yuri, la popular cantante de baladas, lanzó un single titulado "El pequeño panda de Chapultepec" que hace parte de la banda sonora de esta película, junto con el tema "Mi timidez". De alguna forma, los productores lograron hacer que la cantante apareciera en la película, pero por escasos 5 o 7 minutos. Esas escenas son todo el metraje en live-action de la cinta, a pesar que se anunció que tenía escenas "en vivo y dibujos animados", probablemente dando a entender que las partes en live-action interactuaban con la animación, cosa que jamás ocurre.
La película se lanzó en VHS en 1987, pero podría decirse que constituye un material perdido o "lost media", puesto que es inconseguible. Este fragmento proviene de dicho VHS (agradecimientos a Armando Hernández del blog Trash-Mex por enviarme la película).
Para finalizar, hay que decir que el doblaje no se aleja del todo del material original, con la excepción del final, donde se supone que el panda muere en cautiverio. Sólo subo la primera mitad de la cinta por cuestiones de derechos de autor y para evitar problemas con la familia de Pérez Aguirre. El propósito es simplemente documentar la existencia de esta película.
