It seems to cover a lot of different occurrences, from sounds, deeds, and personal experiences. But if we look closely at them, and how our brain works, we might find a single thing that they represent, and learn something else about what our brain does for us. And I get to sneak my Minecraft world into a video yet again. :)
Thanks! What happened to the Rings of Power? - StoryBrainStoryBrain2024-07-28 | Touching on some current things going on in the movie business. There's been a serious trend over the last few years to go into existing franchises and replace characters of certain categories with characters of others, and it's had a bad effect on the profits of those franchises. What subconscious things have caused people to make these changes to the franchises, and why has that caused these franchises to "go broke?" We'll delve into that in this video, and why in the past these types of characters have done fine, but these latest films and shows are not faring as well.

In this video we'll discuss what animal was the actual inspiration for Batman's mask, talk about why he's not actually a bat, and apply the same principle to Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers to see their underlying inspiration. What went wrong with the Metaverse? - StoryBrainStoryBrain2024-04-30 | Despite having all the promotional power and all the financial resources in the world, Facebook's Metaverse has struggled to get off the ground. If it doesn't do so, it may go down as one of the biggest business mistakes in history. People have discussed its struggles, but they may not have focused on what caused Facebook to go down that path in the first place. Why your mixtape is fire and you know it. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2024-03-14 | The mixtape we have sitting on our computer, or on Youtube, Soundcloud, or another place might be pure inferno. We'll also take some time in this video to talk about what's necessary to see our work ACTUALLY judged accurately, and some of the trials it faces after it leaves your hands. The Dylan Mulvaney & Bud Light Debacle. A Deep Dive. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2024-02-13 | A major blunder in media history happened last year when Bud Light managed to lose nearly one-third of their entire customer base off of a single ad campaign. A helluva lot happened, people didn't really touch on a lot of things, and I was talking to my screen by myself most of the time, so now that the channel is back, I can put all of it into a video!

For a very long time, people have pondered the Mona Lisa's facial expression. You can learn a lot about the fundamentals of storytelling but studying how it works. And I never saw any pro wrestler who understood and delivered on those fundamentals like Ric Flair. He was doing things in his prime that I didn't fully understand myself until many years later. In this video, I'm going to go into detail about those things. I think it should be interesting even if you aren't a wrestling fan.

Thanks! How Mumble Rappers hack your brain. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2020-09-13 | There's a new genre of hip-hop that's emerged in the last few years, and traditional rappers like Eminem and Snoop Dogg have gone nuts feuding with it. It features oddly dressed people repeating specific phrases over and over with no lyrical content and often boring musical beats, but it's become incredibly popular. How could a genre that's based on performance, wordplay, and musical talent get overrun by the equivalent of a zombie apocalypse? Well, it has to do with the mental triggers that actual good music hits in our mind, and how those can be hit in other ways. Which is today's topic.

And they also, of course, have huge endorsement contracts to sell products to people who want to be like them. But there are other people in the world who are the best, and who are well-liked, who don't make nearly as much. This is because pro athletes' incomes are based on something unrelated to all of that. Let's talk about what that is.

Normally she leans one way, but recently she has made some statements that others deem as insensitive and have angered her normal base of fans. Many have said that they'll never be able to read Harry Potter again. We know of course, that the book is not separate from the author, but let's take some time today to talk about exactly what the emotional reaction is that causes us to be unable to enjoy artistic work by people we don't like.

Thanks! Why Star Wars toys stopped selling. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2020-07-05 | Starting with the Last Jedi, Star Wars toys experienced a massive drop-off in toy and merchandise sales. Including a lack of attendance at the Galaxy's Edge amusement park. Considering that Star Wars was once the greatest merchandising phenomenon in entertainment history, and it was back with a huge marketing push, it must've taken something major for this to happen. I think that changes and confusion in the basic formula of the Star Wars story caused this to happen. So let's talk about that, and what makes people actually buy toys, merchandise, and theme park tickets.

Toys, movies, TV shows, games, altogether, it's grossed an incredible amount of money. And the effect an aisle of Barbie toys has on a girl is almost hypnotic. There's something about the character, her look, lifestyle, and the colors that are used, that connects with the psyche of most young women. Especially because we can see a lot of the same colors and conventions in women's television. In this video, we'll dive into all of it, and see if there's a clear explanation. ___________________________________________

People voted to see a video about Quentin Tarantino and how non-linear storytelling works in movies. So here it is. We're going to dive into the principles that made Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction the most influential films of the 90's, and which were so hard to reproduce for countless other filmmakers that followed. This will also let us talk about a point that can help us when confronting many other problems.

Thanks!A Novel Solution to Academic Publishing (Video Version) - StoryBrainStoryBrain2020-04-26 | Last week I put up a paper showing how things I learned about entertainment publishing applied to the weirdness and politics of the academic publishing process, and how the traditional theories about why the process was so flawed all turned out to be wrong. This included a proposal to adopt a trick from computer network hacking as a way to actually get the mind to make semi-rational decisions. Here, I read the paper, with some video visual aids, and discuss it in more detail.

The difference between a good and a great movie.StoryBrain2020-01-23 | You can hear a lot of explanations about what makes one movie good and another movie bad. But not nearly as many about what makes one movie great and another just good. Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are two movies that fit in those categories, and I think by analyzing the writing and other issues involved with them, we can show how that line is actually drawn.

Thanks! Why actors pretend to be friends with everyone. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2020-01-14 | It's obvious to most people that Keanu Reeves, Matt Damon, Christian Bale and a lot of other actors pretend to love everyone while promoting their latest Hollywood films. It also seems obvious that there's nothing to lose by being nice, and they're trying to promote the movie. But if you actually examine it, you'll find that famous people in just about every other field, from sports, to math, to table games, tend to actually treat fans and the media terribly, and it's only actors who pretend that everyone they meet is long-lost family. The reason for this, in my opinion, is pretty interesting, so let's talk about it today.

At the time, we said Heath was clearly the best Joker ever and one of the greatest villains ever put on screen. But now, a new challenger as emerged. Joaquin Phoenix's Joker has made a huge splash, and I think it's time to review the new film, and compare how each Joker works on our emotions. Which should be especially interesting, since they actually function in opposite ways.

But perhaps the most interesting part of it is how today's approach to entertainment relates to the situation in which it was founded. Walt Disney's philosophy in creating the company was caused by his experiences with another movie studio that actually mirrored the exact way the Disney Company operates today. Let's go into that, and why today's company would've fired Disney in the same way he was in the 1920's.

Of course, the actual Hollywood movies aren't free to watch, while these videos are, but the real processes involved, I think are much more interesting. Analyzed. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-12-03 | In Jim Cameron and Tim Miller's Terminator: Dark Fate, a decision was made that likely ruined the entire franchise. Since the film's bad showing in the box office, a number of excuses have been offered by the filmmakers for this decision, including that it provides "Rocket Fuel" for the story's plot. In this video we'll address, and debunk, those excuses. And in the process, we'll provide an alternate explanation for how people balance moral and aesthetic desires, and the existence of what some call "System 1" and "System 2" thinking.

This actually made Sonic look far less realistic (well, compared to the previous talking blue hedgehog), but the fans liked it more. So let's talk about how the positive associations that we attach to video game characters are different from movies, how the uncanny valley actually works, and the role believability plays in generating our emotions.

That company went from #1 in 1997 to being out of business in 2001. Let's talk about the financial, creative, and psychological processes that I think could cause something like that to happen.

Thanks! What Jack Nicholson was actually doing in The Shining. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-10-02 | In terms of film fundamentals, The Shining should be one of the worst movies ever made, and Jack Nicholson's performance should have failed miserably. He mugs his whole way through, and the movie has no hero, an unlikable child, and a frightening and unsympathetic heroine. But yet somehow, people, including me, consider The Shining to be the scariest movie ever made. I never quite understood how it worked, until I was working on the last video about Deepfakes which had a clip where Jim Carrey replaced Jack Nicholson in this movie. Something clicked with me then, and after that, I think I got what Stanley Kubrick and Nicholson were doing the whole time. And I've never seen the movie explained this way, so let's talk about it.

But it's embarrassing to the media, so you never hear them talk about it. But it was a great opportunity to see how some lesser-known psychological mechanisms in our brain work, and how they overcome our supposed objective thinking and reasoning, in ways that no one seems to properly describe. Thanks!Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Breakdown. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-08-03 | Quentin Tarantino's latest film, with Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Leonardo DiCaprio ... is currently in theaters, and I actually saw it. Quentin Tarantino's writing style had an interesting interaction with how he was perceived in the 90's, and since then the context has changed, and I think that has a huge effect on how this movie works, and Tarantino's life and tastes themselves have also had an interesting effect on his filmmaking. So I decided to do a breakdown of that, and also give my thoughts on the movie as a whole.
Thanks!Should Jurassic Worlds dinosaurs have feathers? - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-07-23 | The Jurassic World series, which currently stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, has always struggled with the disconnect between what is the most visually impressive for audiences and what has turned out to be scientifically-accurate. I think this includes some interesting stuff also about how different groups of viewers emotionally react to not just what they see on a movie screen, but also how what they see makes them feel about the creators of the film, and how those can contribute to what people think of the movie. There also seems to be a solution to this problem that works best for most viewers, which we'll also talk about.

We've seen a lot of people enrage the public far beyond their worst nightmares with thoughtless or rude behavior, and I think it's a good time to analyze one of these videos and talk about why it might happen.
Thanks! The Eye of the Storm, or, Why Famous People Give Bad Advice. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-07-03 | This week, a new movie about the Beatles and the entertainment industry is in theaters. It's a fantasy where a guy wakes up in a world where no one knows the Beatles' music but him, and he uses it to become famous. Could you really do this? What would happen if you tried? The answer actually, could shed some major light on how the quality of an artist's work actually relates to their success, and I think every creative person should know about it.
Thanks! The Nolan Batsuits: Form vs. Function. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-06-22 | Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight series brought a lot of new elements to the Batman canon. I figured I'd take some time today to look at one of the most important, the Batsuit itself, and compare the choices he made with it in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Some people prefer the first version, others the second, why might that be? And what can that show us about superhero costumes in general?

Thanks! What REALLY happened with Yoko Ono and the Beatles. - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-06-16 | John Lennon and Paul McCartney were two of the greatest songwriters who ever lived. But yet, somehow, Lennon abandoned his musical talent began making strange "avante garde" music when he began dating a Japanese modern artist. Why would love cause him to throw away his skill and start making a form of art he had openly hated before? What makes "avante garde" artists do such strange things in the first place? And why does love sometimes make artists create great work, and other times destroy it? That's today's topic.

Thanks! Why are we obsessed with leaving society? - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-06-03 | It's time for summer, and everybody (including me) is really happy. You can see the same joy in the overwhelming success of movies like The Beach, The Endless Summer, The Blue Lagoon, and Into the Wild. But what is it about us that makes us inherently want to escape a life that's given so much more than we had in our past? Let's get into that one today.
I'm also now reading screenplays and books, it's a great way to help support the channel too. Contact me on Instagram or Facebook if you're interested.
Thanks!Should Spider-Man save his girlfriend, or a trolley full of kids? - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-05-28 | Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man included a classic philosophical problem, when the Green Goblin tried to force Spider-Man to choose between saving the lives of a railcar full of innocents or his girlfriend. The nature of that situation, which we call the Trolley Problem, and Spider-Man's response, can show us a lot about human nature and how we may not understand ourselves.

Thanks! What if Christopher Nolan made Batman vs. Superman? - StoryBrainStoryBrain2019-05-23 | The DCEU started out with Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck's Batman v. Superman. But DC's momentum really started with Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight series. What if Christopher Nolan went on to start the DCEU, adding Henry Cavill's Superman and Lex Luthor to his own universe? I couldn't help thinking about it.
