The story told in this video, not quite the same as in the show, but close, is this: Vivy is a Robot idol who desires to touch the hearts of her fans through song and also save the world from a robot apocalypse. In this video, the death of her biggest fan triggers the installation of a heart, and she blazes with passion to fight and to sing. In the course of her quest, she meets another robot and that blazing passion spreads to her as well. This triggers a duality in Vivy's own heart, bringing her singing to life in a way that she could never achieve before.
When I first started out making AMVs, I wanted to use ALL the effects. Real editors use video effects and I wanted to be cool like them. The results were...well, let's move on. I did a complete 180 and became afraid to use any effect at all, and decided that it was safer to leave the footage un-altered. At times, it possibly even became a complex. But I still had that desire to alter the footage in ways that didn't really intrude upon the aesthetic, and developed a style around transitions and masking that satisfied both my desire to use effects, and my aversion to disrupting the purity of the clips.
This video was born out of a desire to see just how far I could push these two competing goals. I wanted to use a video effect, I wanted it to be everywhere, and I wanted it to matter, but I also wanted it to feel natural to the footage itself. Enter Trapcode Particular, a particle effect that professionals use that you see everywhere in movies and shows if you're looking for it. I know the look I wanted to go for, so I went through my video idea list to see which of them I could use this effect with.
I eventually selected my Vivy idea. This is a show that really needs more attention and AMVs made with it. Seriously, go watch it. It's fantastic. Sayonara Wild Hearts is a musical rhythm based video game with an amazing album, and this track suited Vivy perfectly.
Knowing just how much work this would be, I procrastinated a lot getting this video done. I had a full timeline done in mid-2022, but didn't really finish the base video until the end of 2023. At that point I had about 3 months until the RICE deadline, and a LOT of work to do on the video. I wasn't sure I could finish in time with something I was happy with, but I managed it somehow.
RICE came around, and I couldn't wait to see everyone's reaction to the particle effect. I had this fantasy that everyone would see this video effect and admire how well I'd integrated it with the footage. No one has done anything quite like this to my knowledge, and I was certain it was going to blow everyone away.
What actually happened was almost no one realized I had created the effect. They thought it was just part of the footage. *Surprised Pikachu Face*. Because I was blinded by how much work I'd put into it, the video didn't make nearly as much of a splash as I'd hoped, even after the effect was pointed out. It did win Best Draction though, the first year that category has been in RICE (congrats Speedy! Your baby made it!). The irony is that I'd achieved exactly what I set out to do: use a video effect in a video to change its story but make it feel natural to the footage. It was a very humbling triumph. I don't expect this video to compete well, or that most viewers will notice all the work that went into it. But that's fine. I set out to make something, and it turned out exactly how I wanted it to. I'm more than satisfied with everything I learned while making it.
Here's a version with most of the effects removed so you can see what I changed. I only left a few necessary masks in.

It was dumb and unnecessary, but I actually encoded both versions of the movie for this video, rather than just de-saturating the color version. I edited the video with the BnC version, and switched it with the color version for rendering. Then I overlayed the color version over the BnC one and put in the color where I wanted it. I could, and probably should have just done it with effects, rather than rendering out two different versions of the video and combining them, but somehow this method felt more authentic to our love for the movie, even if the end result is identical.

This was a lot of fun. After Legopunk Brickrunners, I decided to start experimenting more with sound effects in my videos. Literally days after I started gathering sound effects, I was invited to join the Hallow's Eve Iron Chef, and I saw a great opportunity to try them out. The rules were we had one week to make a video. We could pick any song we wanted, but we had to use the sources provided by the contest. I had not seen most of them, so that added to the challenge. I came up with a concept to use the Fury Road sound track, selected these three sources to edit with, and I just went ham, ending up winning 1st place. So thank you RaikiriShadow and Legato2400 for inviting me to this competition. It was a blast.

Aniventure: 2nd place Trailer
I watched about 5 seconds of The Sea Beast trailer before I got this idea. I knew it was going to be a perfect fit, and it was. Not really much more to say about it. The lip sync wasn't as difficult as I was afraid it would be either. A little more complex than usual, but not much. The real joy came when I entered AWA Pro/Accolades for the first time and won an award. A huge thank you to all the participants who voted for it. Coincidentally, as I type this, I myself am off to vote for this country's future.

I don't know if the full video will ever be uploaded to Youtube. That will likely be decided after it has done the Con circuit.
The bonus clip is the Haikyuu!! clip I submitted before I knew that joke had been done already. So then I replaced with Boom Headshot.

I was way outside my wheelhouse with this video. I typically use newer shows with better animation because they suit my syncing style, so this was a real challenge to put together. But dammit this song just needed to be edited with this show. I love this anime so much, and it deserved my best effort to make something funny with it. I wanted to try a gradual ramping up of the hilarity, but that was harder to achieve than I thought it would be. No other video has gone through as many iterations as this one did. I "finished" it over 5 months ago for AWA, but I kept going back and adjusting it, switching clips back and forth and what-not. I had very little confidence in it. So I was very surprised at the huge reception it got from everyone, and I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to hit the exact tone I was going for. This is also the first time I've tried AI upscaling.

My favorite ideas are ones I get before I've even watched the source. I'd only seen a few clips of Lego Monkie Kid, and then @kai_keda_amvs showed me her videos. The morning after I saw her videos, I woke up with this idea in my head. I immediately asked her to provide me with the episodes (THANK YOU!) and set about watching the whole show and BOY was it a wild ride, and just as perfect to use with this trailer as I'd hoped it would be.

My level of difficulty was described as "Very Challenging" as I was not given very much to work with. This is the video as I heard it while editing.
youtube.com/watch?v=coUZlvJxW54
I grew to hate and love these clicks, as they were my only method of syncing to the song.
The text description I was given to work with. I think mRC was assuming I was actually going to seek out and listen to the song myself before editing. I did not. I was given a few timecodes to work with, but they really only affected the "8-bit" section in the middle. All other sync was pretty much just luck.
Song Description by mRC:
This is a rap song. I'd recommend action, as there are a lot of gunshot sound effects that could be used for some really cool syncing. At around 1:13, I'd recommend doing some sort of filter on it, mosaic or something, to fit with the theme of the lyrics/music. For clip types, at around 2:12 I'd recommend some clips of characters sort of powering up, i.e. Goku going super saiyan or whatever you kids watch nowadays. If you're gonna work with this song, I STRONGLY suggest doing an anime mix, as this is also a mashup of this artists' other songs. Depending on where you download the song, there is a spoken word bit at the end. You can cut that out if you want, or you can just roll with it. They also mention an 'album' a lot in the chorus, so I'd put some sort of music anime in there. Hope this helps ^o^
Vars/SQ made some helpful additions:
"around 1:13" refers to 1:13 - 1:37 with a drop at 1:17
"around 2:12" is weird
It's either referring to 1:57 - 2:14 because of the lyrics or 2:15 - 2:36 because of a tone shift
And also since I feel bad I'm gonna cheat and just give you another timestamp that is in this section lol
2:15 music drops and is only vocals as a transition to another part of the song. 2:17 the music slams back in.

Many years ago I got my butt kicked in a 2 hour Iron Chef match against my good buddy Arashinome. This was the song selected for the match. His video was so good, it lived rent free in my head for well over a decade. When I watched the first episode of Arcane, I knew it was time to give this song another go, because I knew this show was perfect for it. It may not be a 2 hour edit (more like two months) but I think I did it right this time.

Song: Glider by Japanese Breakfast - Sable OST
This video needs a bit of context. This song is from the video game Sable. In that game, you play a character who is embarking on a "Gliding" which is a coming-of-age journey that everyone in her clan does. The purpose of a Gliding is to go out into the world, do and experience all that you can, and decide who and what you want to be for the rest of your life. The opening of the game has you saying goodbye to your family, getting on your glider, and this song plays as you leave. It was a very emotional moment and I instantly fell in love with the song.
For the video, because the game has you riding a glider, I wanted to use as many scenes as possible of Hilda riding something. A woff, a boat, a bird, a water spirit, anything. That sense of being carried along on an adventure just shines through better that way. For the ending scene, I picked a clip that I thought accurately reflected my feelings at the end of the video game. It was a very bittersweet moment, when the adventure was over, and it was time to choose to move on, but I still had that desire to get back out there and experience the world.
Because I was limiting my scene selection to only riding/flying scenes, the video came together in less than a day. I almost uploaded it right away, but I decided to hold off and tweak it some more. I took an hour or so every day for the next week modifying it, switching things around, and tightening things up until I had it in a place I liked. Hope you enjoy it!
Song: The Real G by Cory Edwards - Hoodwinked OST
I got this idea last year while watching Hoodwinked but I didn't really jump on it until the RICE contest which had a Musical theme, where this video was a finalist. I had a lot of fun making it, but I really had to scrape for every bit of footage I could. I had to cut the song down a bit too, but in the end I'm happy with how it turned out.

After spending almost four years on my last video, it feels really strange to start and finish a project in about a month and a half. This is one of those ideas that I got while listening to music in the car and got started as soon as I could.
The actual editing was pretty much completed in a week, and I thought I was going to be done in no time. Then I thought "Hey, what if I used masking to pop out a few key scenes beyond the aspect ratio?" I told myself it would only be for a few parts of the video. Over a month later, I had begun to suspect I was addicted to masking, because I'd pretty much masked out the whole thing other than the intro and outro, which I was firmly determined to leave untouched.
The end result is either a grotesque monument to a lack of self-control, or a half decent AMV with a bit of unnecessary flair. Either way, I'm happy with it.

Sorry Lotte and Sucy. These are the real best Witches.
I had been keeping my eye out for a song to use with this show, and when the K/DA -Pop/Stars music video came out, I knew it was the one. Starting in 2017 I worked on this video for 3 years and 8 months. It took so long because I was also writing a book and working full time. Had I worked on this video exclusively, it would only have taken about a year, maybe less.
This is definitely my crowning achievement when it comes to flow and sync. I put a lot of work into the transitions, much of which will go unnoticed. All effects were masked out of clips from show itself so that they appear as natural as possible.
In fact, the most complicated transition in this video is nearly invisible unless you're looking for it. At 2:05, I needed the clip of Diana flying to keep going for a second longer than it actually was, so I used the flash of her spell to transition into another similar clip later in the movie. If you look at the background, you can see the change. I also had to digitally remove the kid riding with her in the second clip because it would be strange for him to suddenly appear there.

Starting in April of 2015, this video was several months worth of work spread out over more than a year. It's been far too long since I've been as proud of a video as I am of this one. The last time I had both the motivation and the time necessary to make a video all I that it was within my abilities for it to be was with Eureka - Sunlight back in 2008. As always, I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it.

November 19th, 2013 saw the sudden passing of a great friend and key member of DZ studios. For the 1 year anniversary, we released a MEP we put together to send him on his way. This is my track for that MEP. I believe all I could say about how his passing feels is expressed here. Goodbye Sam. We're all going to miss you.
youtube.com/watch?v=L8ML8oHqASQ
There are two or three minor tweaks from the MEP version but it's mostly the same.
The video is rather rushed and only took about 4 hours to make, but I'm happy with it. I'll probably make a better Attack on Titan AMV eventually.
But for this video, Joey contacted me a few days before Halloween to make a track, and I came up with the idea to use The Kraken song pretty much on the spot. I've always wanted to use this song for something and this was a good opportunity.
I know that something like this has already been done here.
http://kotaku.com/shadow-of-mordor-player-clears-out-saurons-high-command-1641867035 but I wanted to take it a step further, and have two warchiefs there and have it happen during a riot for maximum carnage.
The music is Aeroplanes by Smashing Pumpkins.

The movie is DBZ: Battle of Gods
Years ago I promised a friend I would make a DBZ AMV. When this movie was announced I told him I would use it. Over a year later, here it is, as promised. Sorry for the long wait, Danny.

First off, I want it made clear that I cannot take full creative credit for how the song was altered. I first heard this song from this video and many of the changes made mimic it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyVp0VjAmQI
By the time I started editing this video I hadn't realized how much this version differed from the original song and had planned this video around Corsair's edit. Though I did make a few of my own changes, I just want to make sure this is known.
Now, about the video itself. I've never done a video like this before. Its title could easily have been "Silk Discovers Rotobrush." But that wouldn't have served what I was trying to communicate. One of the repeated lines in the song is "Nicotine from a Silver Screen" and by replacing Nicotine with Ponies I was illustrating their dangerously addictive nature.
CREDITS
This is the song I used. All credit for the music goes to the original artist.

When my Hawken clan found out I do video stuff they asked me if I could make a montage for them. Since Hawken is awesome and Megas XLR is also awesome I thought putting them together would be the best way to go about it.
This video in particular is very special to me since it was my first truly ambitious project and took all of six months to complete. I still consider it to be one of the best, if not the best videos I've ever done and very little I have made since can measure up to it.
You know, it's funny. I still remember that mask at :16 took me literally an entire week to do. Since then I've done far longer and more complicated masks in mere hours. What a difference the tangent function makes. Wish I'd known how to use it back then.
The anime is Eureka Seven and the song is Sunlight by Natalie Imbruglia.

Free ponynet for anyone who can find all the Jaysons.
Jayson Thiessen, the supervising director of FiM, requested that somebrony make a PMV with this song. Almost three weeks later, I finally managed to get it done. Hilariously, when I first started work on it the day of the request, I was sure I'd be able to get it done within a day or two. In fact, even as the project continued to get more ambitious I always felt like it was only a few hours away from completion. Still, three weeks is definitely a personal record for putting out a video this masking heavy, but only because I spent almost every free minute on it. Videos like this usually take months for me to do.
The song is Up, Up and Away by The Fifth Dimension.
Special Thanks to Mr. Thiessen for continuing to supply us with pony.

I was very happy with this one. KnK has to be the easiest anime in the world to edit. In 2 hours I made a 2 1/2 minute video that I was actually pleased with. It is flawed, though. The action scenes don't mesh with the slower ones and there's no coherent mood. But, I didn't make many mistakes editing-wise and it has good sync. Too bad the song doesn't match it very well.

This one was lots of fun. I had to put together 4 groups of 3 sources each. The group that got selected was the one I had to edit with. Luckily, I got the one with the three anime that go very well together.
anime - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Noein
Song - Bloody Beetroots - FFA 1985
I've uploaded all of my videos from the tournament. Hopefully copyright issues won't get in the way of them this time.

This video was made with a time limit of 2 hours and a randomly selected anime. This was round three of Brad's Iron Chef tournament 4, which I won.
Uhg. I didn't enjoy this one at all. The song matches the source even less than the last round and it wasn't very fun to edit to (but awesome to listen to of course). Also, I took a risk by challenging myself to make a 3 minute Iron Chef video. I did succeed, but the video suffered for it so I won't be trying that again. Still it did advance me to round 4 so the judges must have liked it.
Anime - Sword of the Stranger
Song - Deep Purple - Speed King
I've uploaded all of my videos from the tournament. Hopefully copyright issues won't get in the way of them this time.
Round 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG2-XY6jYIM

Round 4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaHORrRJgm8
Final Round - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60bN7MXfg4Q
FINALLY, the tournament is over. I feel pretty bad for choking at the end though. With an extra hour to edit I should have done much better than this. In the end Chiikaboom ended up taking first with this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDUtUQvZpuY
I cannot think of an editor who deserves it more. Congrats Chii.
As for this video, the song is Madeon - Finale and the source is Redline.

Although I worked a lot harder on these, I'm not sure they're as good as the last time. I mean, holy CRAP that fluttershy YEEEEES one is stupid. I only did it to see if I could. But, they thought it was good enough for Anthology so they left it in. As for the How I Met Your Mother clip in this video, I think Zephyr just forgot to include it since it was never really rejected. The pony spheres got trimmed for being just too damn long. Other than that, there were some minor trims here and there that aren't included in this video.
But yeah, this is everything I made for PONIES The Anthology II (and one that I didn't). There aren't as many indiviual clips as the last one but they averaged much much longer. Overall the amount of material that made it into the final was about the same as last time. Here are all of the clips with their sources.
