Rec-Con 1989 Con Video Remastered QuackVideo 2024-09-19 | Going through some old DVDs, I found the Official Convention Video of Rec-Con, the 28th British Star Trek Convention, held in 1989. I decided to see whether this 30-year-old video could be remastered for a modern audience. The original video was recorded on Standard Definition VHS. It was then edited together using a VHS Editing Deck and a Commodore Amiga for titles. Distribution was then by tape-to-tape copies. Even using a time base corrector, there was an inevitable loss in quality. Obviously, using a distribution copy was out of the question but fortunately, I found a DVD that I had produced, taken from the edited Master Tape. I loaded the video into Adobe Premiere Pro. I replaced the existing graphics with better-quality items. Sadly, of the three guests, only the presentation given by Richard Arnold (1955 – 2021) was recorded, on a hand-held camcorder at the back of the room. The talk featured behind-the-scenes photographs and videos. The resulting footage was far from satisfactory; Even if colour balancing had been possible, the images were low-resolution, occupying a small portion of the screen. I decided, therefore, to replace these elements with better quality items. Some of the trailers for the Classic Trek movies (Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Star Trek V: The Final Frontier), as released as ‘Extras’ on subsequent Video/DVD/BluRay releases, differ from those shown at the time so I decided to reconstruct, as far as possible, the original trailers as shown at the convention. Sadly, I was unable to find any footage of the talk given by Dr Jack Cohen (19 September 1933 – 6 May 2019), nor that of Todd Bryant although I was able to find a radio interview, given to publicise Star Trek V: The Final Frontier . Apart from this major reconstruction work, I have attempted to improve the picture quality by correcting the White balance and counteracting the camcorders' Automatic Gain Control. Similarly, I have tried to improve the sound, replacing, where appropriate, sound elements such as music and adjusting speech to counteract the acoustics of the convention halls. Finally, I topped and tailed it with appropriate captions. I hope you enjoy it!

Trek 4 Trailer Theatrical Release 1986 - remastered QuackVideo 2021-05-18 | As part of an ongoing project to refresh the official Convention video from Rec-Con 1, the 28th British Star Trek Convention held in Leeds in 1989, I tried to find a better copy of the original 1986 trailer for The Voyage Home - Star Trek IV, to replace the original video of a video. Video releases after 1989 saw the trailers re-edited, with a hideous computer-generated logo at the end. I was forced to rebuild the trailer, as shown at the Convention, from scratch, using the best elements I could find.This is for historical interest only. Thunderbirds are Go (1966) Trailer Remastered QuackVideo 2020-02-21 | Amongst the extras on the DVD and BluRay releases for the film Thunderbirds Are Go was the original cinema trailer. For reasons that are still unclear, unlike the Feature, it was not remastered. I decided to put right this omission by using remastered footage and adding appropriate titles in Adobe Premiere Pro. For the most part, I was able to match the original, cut for cut, However, there was one cut absent from the Feature so I substituted an appropriate shot.I hope you enjoy it.
Space 1999 Yr 1 Ep 25 The Metamorph intro QuackVideo 2019-10-22 | Space: 1999 was the third live-action series produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. It was filmed at Pinewood Studios, UK, from 1973 - 1974.After 24 Episodes of Season 1, ITC New York decided that it needed 'improvement'. To that end, they brought in Fred ('The Serial Killer') Freiberger, recruited in part to make the series more appealing to the American market. To that end, Freiberger re-worked the series with major cast and character changes, a heightened emphasis on action, drama and 'humor', and even ensured that signs appearing in the episodes used American English spelling. The first noticeable change was the removal of the first season's 'cold open' pre-credit sequence.Imagine that Fred Freiberger had not been brought into 'improve' the series. This is how I imagine the 25th Episode, 'The Metamorph', might have opened, with the 'Cold Open', followed by the Titles, accompanied by Barry Gray's magnificent music.

Introducing Thunderbirds QuackVideo 2010-07-21 | Part of the merchandising that accompanied the Gerry Anderson TV Series during the 1960s was a series of 7" 33rpm Mini Albums. Each of these played for '21 Minutes of Adventure' and effectively was a 'radio play' using the cast and sound effects from the series.'Introducing Thunderbirds' was released to tie in with the release of the TV series and acted as a primer to the main characters and the basic premise of the series. I used to listen to the album on a regular basis and imagined it as a proper episode. I then decided to see whether, at the very least, I could create the Title Sequence for this episode

Of course. this is the basis of the Joe 90 episode 'Trial at Sea, but as you can see, it works very well in the earlier format

Return of the Hood QuackVideo 2009-07-19 | The last time we saw The Hood, he was fleeing from Lady Penelope after attempting to sabotage the Zero-X during the film 'Thunderbirds are Go!'Lady Peneope assumed that there was no point in looking for survivors after the helicopter in which the Hood was attempting to flee, was shot down by FAB 1's cannon.What would have happened if he'd survived?. I first attempted this back in about 1990, copying, tape-to-tape from VHS recordings., the intention being to have a bit of fun with the concept, dubbing in comedy sound effects. The result was quiite enjoyable. With the advent of Digital recording, I've been able to improve on that first effort which is now at least twice as long as that first effort.On a mad whim, I decided to 'top and tail' my efforts with the appropriate title and credits sequences . Thus, I suppose you could say that this is the first new episode since 'Give or Take a Million '. TB Original Credits QuackVideo 2009-03-04 | We are all familiar with the famous Thunderbirds March which played over the credits of 31 of the 32 episodes. The music for the first episode being somewhat different and strangely truncated as are the titles. The reason for this was that the original closing theme, 'Flying High', a song in the same sort of vein as aqua Marina and again sung by Garry Miller, was considered to be unsuitable, just weeks before transmission of the first episode. This video is my interpretation of how the end sequence might have looked had this music not been abandoned. Of course, the music was used much later, with different lyrics, in the episode 'Ricochet'
Parker Well Done QuackVideo 2009-01-31 | Lady Penelope sings! This song was written in 1965 and featured on the Century 21 mini album 'TV 21 Themes. I first produced a video of this in 1993 using (then) 'State of the Art' VHS. Needless to say, the picture quality was pretty poor but the overall result was very pleasing and I even achieved a limited amount of Lip Sync. With the advent of digital technology, this task became far easier and the end result is as you see here with lip sync almost as good as that achieved by AP films. Enjoy!
