One Earth ConservationRev. Dr. LoraKim Joyner interviews Santiago Lacuth about the care of macaws at the Rescue and Liberation Center of Mabita, La Moskitia, Honduras. The birds are being heavily illegally poached, and he helps them fly free. Rev. Dr. Joyner then asks Santiago if he will pray in Miskito for the people, the parrots, and for all life. He does. The macaws at the start of the video are free flying macaws that have been liberated and have come to eat at the Center that supports the young birds until they can manage on their own. The keynote address was sponsored by the Harrison Avian Research & Conservation Collaborative: HARCC, and by the Avian and Wildlife Laboratory, University of Miami. Through stories gathered from working with the people and parrots of the Americas as a conservationist and wildilfe veterinarian for over 37 years, LoraKim helps us understand the concepts of "No One is Free Until All are Free," and "Unconditional Solidarity," and the need to Stop the Parrot Trade, Stop the Demand for Parrots, and to have No More Birds in Cages.Wild Olive-throated parakeets cared by humans and each otherOne Earth Conservation2024-07-09 | In May 2024 the Honduran authories brought us many birds - yellow-naped parrots and olive-throated parakeets. These birds had been illegally stolen from their wild nests and families only to suffer harm in the wildilfe trade. At our rescue center in La Moskitia the birds are cared for until they are able to fly and be liberated. These are the parakeets that survived, while others died and we could not save them.Dying Parrot Chick - Due to Wildlife TradeOne Earth Conservation2024-07-09 | This young yellow-naped parrot chick was confsicated from traffickers who poached this bird from her nest in Honduras. The authorities brought boxes and kennels full of birds to us in rough shape, which is not uncommon. This bird eventually died, which, unfortunately is also is not uncommon.Hungry parrots nibbling on toesOne Earth Conservation2024-06-27 | These yellow-naped parrot chicks were confiscated by the authorities because they were illegally trapped by poachers who wanted to sell them. Now they have to grow up without their natural parents. But the caregivers of the Rescue and Liberation Center of La Moskitia will insure that they will one day fly free. In the meantime, they await their turn to be fed and amuse themselves by tickling the toes of the staff.Thousands of parrots flying in SurinameOne Earth Conservation2024-05-11 | Sometimes counting wild parrots can be joyful and overwhelming, such as this roost site in Suriname on the Guyana border where thousands of orange-winged amazons come to roost every night. Once the tree climber takes the video they return to the ground and the team will continue to monitor the nest until the young chick leaves the nest to fly free with their parents. This video was taken by our partners in Nicaragua, BIOMETEPE. We are glad they are caring for this critcially endangered species that is under threat mostly from poaching and the illegal wildlife trade, as well as habitat loss.Liberated macaws in La Moskitia, HondurasOne Earth Conservation2024-05-11 | This tree full of liberated scarlet macaws are part of a large number of parrots that have been released at the Rescue and Liberation Center of La Moskitia, Honduras, which is part of our macaw conservation project. We ran outside and picked up the bird and placed them in a box in a quiet warm place until the bird could recover. We then let the bird go here as you see in the video, and they were able to fly to a tree and perch. Often birds die when they hit windows, but can survive. They just need time to recover where they will not be predated or get too cold or hot. The service theme was freedom, and in letting this bird go we too freed ourselves.Local Community Caring for Rescued Wild Scarlet MacawsOne Earth Conservation2024-03-19 | The national and interndational demand for parrots is overwhelming the communities who are caring for their birds and don't want to lose their parrots to other countries. We take a full water bottle and smother it with sticky. tape. We then lower the bottle into the cavity with a long extension pole, and upon removal, hopefully our "fishing expedition" yielded the contents of the cavity, which can tell us what happened to any missing eggs or chicks. This video is our first attempt in a green-and-red macaw nest where the chick was missing. The sticky bottle came up with bone fragments for a macaw, so we know the chick had died. This is sad for the macaw family, but with this information we can see what interventions we might employ to save chicks of the future. Gracias a Dra.
