Kayla Barnes-LentzWhen cellular energy production is impaired, no diet, supplement, or health protocol can work as intended.
In this episode, Dr. Chris Masterjohn, nutrition scientist and expert in micronutrients and metabolism, explains why mitochondrial function is the limiting factor behind stalled progress, persistent fatigue, and supplements that stop working over time.
He breaks down why vitamin D supplementation often creates new problems when it is taken without proper nutrient balance, how high doses can disrupt other systems in the body, and why sunlight has biological effects that vitamin D pills alone cannot replicate.

This conversation also looks at how sunlight and circadian timing influence metabolism, mitochondrial function, and the signals that regulate the body throughout the day.
We also get into the rapidly growing world of peptides, why “natural” does not automatically mean safe, and why some compounds are being used faster than the human research can keep up. From birth control and unanswered questions around thymic function to light exposure, BPC-157, thymosin alpha-1, SS-31, and GHK-Cu, this episode explores where the science is promising, where it is still uncertain, and what deserves much more attention.
#femalelongevity #longevity #thymus #immunehealth #peptides #circadianrhythm #sunlight #healthoptimizationThe Immune Organ That May Be Driving Your Fertility Decline | Dr. Abud Bakri, MDKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-17 | Most longevity conversations focus on the brain, heart, muscle, and metabolism. Far less attention goes to the thymus, an immune organ that starts shrinking almost as soon as puberty ends, and new research suggests it may be quietly linked to fertility, hormones, and even how millions of women taking birth control are aging on the inside.
I sit down with Dr. Abud Bakri, a board-certified internal medicine physician and hospitalist who founded Systems, a performance and longevity practice built around treating the body system by system rather than symptom by symptom.
We start with the foundations that determine whether any advanced intervention can actually work: light exposure, circadian timing, mitochondrial health, metabolic function, and the parts of modern life working against all of it.
Then we get into the thymus itself: why it shrinks after puberty, what that has to do with an unexpected finding in ovarian development, and a harder question Dr. Bakri raises about whether birth control may be accelerating that shrinkage in ways no one is currently studying. We close on peptides: why Dr. Bakri treats them like drugs rather than supplements, what separates receptor-based peptides from the ones we understand far less, what we actually know about BPC-157, thymosin alpha-1, SS-31, and GHK-Cu, and how a peptide protocol could eventually be timed to a woman's cycle instead of applied the same way to everyone.

Nutrition, sleep, and movement remain foundational, but research suggests sauna therapy may also help reduce insulin and improve insulin sensitivity.

#KaylaBarnes #DrWillCole #WomensHealth #Nutrition #LongevityHow Your Last Meal Affects Your Body at NightKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-14 | Your body does its deepest repair at night, but only if you give it the space to do it. Dr. Will Cole explains how gut health, meal timing, and autophagy all shape cellular cleanup while you sleep.
#KaylaBarnes #DrWillCole #Autophagy #GutHealth #SleepHealthDo Not Inject Peptides Until You Check ThisKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-13 | Peptides are often marketed as if the compound name is the only thing that matters. I think source quality and medical oversight matter just as much.
An injectable bypasses many of the body’s normal barriers, so contamination, sterility, labeling, and batch integrity cannot be treated casually. I have only used peptides prescribed through medical doctors, and I would not rely on a polished website or a certificate of analysis alone as proof of quality.
Documents can be inaccurate or falsified, and unapproved products may not have the controls people assume they do. My position is not that every peptide is bad. It is that injecting an unverified product is a completely different risk category from taking an ordinary supplement. Curiosity should never outrun basic safety.

A single 30-minute sauna session increased several white blood cell populations in a recent study, while longer-term research has linked frequent sauna use with lower respiratory disease risk. This is one reason I prioritize sauna after travel.
#sauna #immunity #respiratoryhealth #longevity #healthoptimizationWhen You Eat Matters More Than You ThinkKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-11 | Meal timing matters just as much as food quality. In this clip, Dr. Will Cole explains why giving your body a longer overnight break can support cellular repair while you sleep.
#KaylaBarnes #DrWillCole #Longevity #Fasting #CellularHealthWhy Your Healthy Routine Can Stop WorkingKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-10 | We think of aging as something that happens evenly across the body, but cellular health is far more complex than that.
In this conversation with Dr. Will Cole, we break down why cells can become stressed and confused, how food, light, gut health, and chronic stress shape cellular function, and why the foundations of longevity matter more than adding another protocol.
#KaylaBarnes #DrWillCole #Longevity #CellularHealth #GutHealthHow to Heal Your Cells | Dr. Will ColeKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-10 | We talk about aging like it happens to a whole person at once. It doesn't. It happens organ by organ, at different speeds, and most people never find out which part of them is running ahead until something breaks.
Dr. Will Cole has spent sixteen years running one of the first functional medicine telehealth centers in the world, and he came to this conversation with a case that is both clinical and personal. In 2023 his father lost consciousness at the wheel and died in the crash. The autopsy pointed to cardiometabolic changes, and his heart cells had been aging faster than the rest of him. That same year, Stanford researchers found that one in five adults over fifty has at least one organ aging faster than the others, and that when it's the heart, the risk of a cardiac event more than triples.
His new book with Dr. Josh Axe, Heal Your Cells, makes an argument that reframes most of what gets called normal aging. Exhaustion, brain fog, the weight that will not move, the hormone shifts nobody can explain. These are not the calendar. They are cells that have stopped reading their own instructions clearly, and that is a state you can change.
We get into what actually makes a cell feel unsafe, why your gut lining is one cell thick and therefore the first thing to break, and the point almost nobody makes about elimination diets: the reintroduction matters as much as the elimination, and a protocol you never came off of is a cast you left on until the muscle atrophied.
We also get into light. Not just morning sun, but the darkness half, which matters more for women than most people realize. Melatonin is not only a sleep hormone, it's one of the more important antioxidants for ovarian aging, and light levels most people would call almost nothing can cut its production substantially.

Dr. Tania Dempsey discusses mast cell-targeted therapies, including antihistamines, cromolyn, ketotifen, nutrients, and GLP-1s.
#PMOS #MastCells #InsulinResistance #HormoneHealth #WomensHealthI Brought 15 Gut Tests to a GI Doctor. He Dismissed All of ThemKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-08 | I brought in my gut testing, circled everything that was out of range, and explained exactly what had changed after antibiotics.
The response was that my calprotectin and colonoscopy looked fine, so the rest of the data was dismissed, even though I was still symptomatic. This is exactly why looking beyond a single marker can matter when symptoms are still there.
#GutHealth #Microbiome #WomensHealth #FunctionalMedicine #FemaleLongevityWhat Sauna Research Actually Shows About LongevityKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-07 | Sauna is one of the longevity practices I use consistently, but the evidence needs to be described honestly.
The widely shared reductions in mortality, cardiovascular events, and dementia come largely from observational Finnish data, not randomized trials proving sauna caused those outcomes. The research is still compelling enough to take seriously, especially around cardiovascular conditioning and heat adaptation, but it is not a guarantee.
I also track my own toxic-burden results and have seen lower levels during periods when I use sauna. That is useful personal data, not proof that sauna “detoxes” everyone. My approach is to separate established evidence, promising associations, and personal response. Hydration, heat tolerance, medical conditions, and recovery still matter more than chasing the hottest temperature or longest session.
#Sauna #Longevity #HeatTherapy #CardiovascularHealth #HealthyAgingWhy Women Experience Anxiety During Hormonal ShiftsKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-05 | Anxiety in women can sometimes be closely tied to physiology, especially during major hormonal shifts like puberty, perimenopause, and the second half of the menstrual cycle.
Dr. Tania Dempsey explains how hormonal changes and mast cell activity may contribute to these patterns, and why understanding the underlying biology can change how we think about anxiety.
#WomensHealth #Hormones #Anxiety #MastCells #FemaleLongevityPostmenopausal Women Improved Body Composition With Zero HormonesKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-05 | No hormones, real results, worth sitting with.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, founder of Muscle-Centric Medicine, shares one of the first studies she ran on postmenopausal women: higher protein, two days of yoga a week, five days of walking. Body composition improved without any hormone replacement involved.
This doesn't mean hormones don't matter, it means the basics matter more than we give them credit for.
#menopause #protein #womenshealth #longevity #hormonehealthThe Mast Cell Connection Behind PMOS, Migraines and Heavy PeriodsKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-03 | Mast cells do far more than trigger allergies.
They interact with hormones, inflammation, the nervous system, and even blood clotting, which may help explain why conditions like PMOS, migraines, anxiety, and heavy periods can appear together.
Dr. Tania Dempsey breaks down why mast cell dysfunction is so often overlooked, especially in women, and why understanding this connection can completely change how we think about seemingly unrelated symptoms. What You Ignore in Your 20s Decides Whether You Keep Your Fertility | Dr. Tania Dempsey, MDKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-09-03 | Most women who deal with unexplained allergies, stubborn inflammation, heavy periods or a PMOS (formerly PCOS) diagnosis are never told to look at the same underlying cause: an immune cell most doctors were never taught to test for.
Dr. Tania Dempsey, MD, trained in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins before leaving conventional practice to focus on mast cell activation syndrome, a condition she believes explains far more chronic illness in women than most doctors realize. She's the founder of The AIM Center for Personalized Medicine and helped found the International Society for Mast Cell Activation Syndromes, where she now serves as treasurer.
This isn't some rare, fringe diagnosis. Dr. Dempsey estimates it may affect as many as one in five people, and in women it hides behind a long list of other labels, PMOS, endometriosis, hypermobility, unexplained heavy periods, that rarely get connected back to the same root.

After a night with only 6 hours and 24 minutes of sleep, average glucose rose 10 points and waking glucose increased 3 points compared to a night with over 8 hours.
Just one night of poor sleep can raise hunger hormones like ghrelin and elevate blood sugar, which is why consistent, high-quality sleep is one of the more overlooked levers for metabolic health, especially for women.
#GlucoseMonitoring #SleepHealth #MetabolicHealth #FemaleLongevity #ContinuousGlucoseMonitor #WomensHealth #SleepScienceYour Indoor Air May Be Working Against Your HealthKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-31 | Air is one of our largest daily exposures and one of the easiest to ignore because you cannot see most pollutants.
I do not think home optimization should begin with buying every gadget. It should begin with measurement. PM2.5, VOCs, humidity, and CO2 can reveal whether cooking, cleaning products, poor ventilation, smoke, or an overcrowded room are changing the air you breathe.
Once you know the problem, interventions become more rational: ventilation when outdoor air is clean, source control, appropriate filtration, and regular maintenance. A plant may improve the feel of a room, but it should not replace filtration or ventilation. My approach is to make the environments where I spend the most time as supportive as realistically possible, rather than trying to control every exposure in the world.

Dr. Margie Davenport explains that women who were inactive before pregnancy and started moving during it saw a 40 percent reduction in pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and gestational hypertension, a 67 percent reduction in depression risk, and no increase in miscarriage, small baby, or early baby risk.
The old idea that you shouldn't start something new once you're pregnant just isn't supported by the data.
#pregnancyexercise #womenshealth #longevity #prenatalfitness #exerciseinpregnancyWhy I’m Using Spermidine Instead of Longer FastsKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-29 | Mitochondria affect every system in the body.
After speaking with Dr. Yurth, I’m testing spermidine to support autophagy, our cells’ natural recycling process, without relying on prolonged fasting, which is not always ideal for women.
#Spermidine #Autophagy #MitochondrialHealth #WomensHealth #LongevityMy Mitochondrial Optimization ProtocolKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-29 | Mitochondria are not just cellular power plants. They are the root of nearly every system in the body, and when they are working well, everything downstream works better.
After a recent podcast conversation with Dr. Yurth (), one of the true OGs in the longevity space, I decided to bring a supplement back into my protocol that I had stepped away from for a while: spermidine. Before getting into that, I wanted to walk through the foundational habits that have to be in place first, because no supplement works in isolation from the basics.
I break down the daily habits I prioritize for mitochondrial health and why I am testing a higher-dose spermidine protocol to support autophagy.

Your nutritional needs genuinely change as your hormones move through each phase, so eating the same way all month long means missing real opportunities to support your body.
This covers how I adjust through the cycle, from iron rich foods like red meat and oysters during menstruation, to protein and cruciferous vegetables in the follicular phase, to calcium rich foods over supplements in the luteal phase. There is also a reason I lean toward whole food sources of calcium instead of large doses, which matters more for heart health than most people realize. Small shifts timed to each phase add up over time.

The longevity physician lays out the U shaped curve: high needs early in life, lower through the middle years, then climbing again as we age and get more sedentary. Muscle responds to mechanical tension, exercise, and amino acids like leucine at every stage.

These are the tools I actually think are worth it, from air purification and water filtration to a body composition scale that tracks muscle and bone density (especially important for women), plus lab testing and sauna therapy, with sleep still topping the list as the real foundation.
#longevity Longevity #WomensHealth #FemaleLongevity #HealthOptimization #Wellness #Sauna #LabTestingProtein Timing Actually Doesn’t Matter If…Kayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-22 | Timing matters less than people think, until it doesn't.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, author of Forever Strong, breaks down when protein timing actually matters, mainly around exhaustive exercise and the first meal of your day. Her warning for women who fast: the tissue that pays the price for a long fasting window is muscle.
#proteintiming #fasting #muscle #womenshealth #longevityWhy You Cannot Fix Your Posture by Fixing Your PostureKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-21 | You cannot fix your posture by fixing your posture, and once Dr. Gabrielle Lyon explains why, it's obvious.
The muscle-centric medicine physician connects posture to the motor patterns we all mastered as babies, crawling, sitting up, standing, and explains why most adults stop training those patterns after 40.
Strength alone won't fix it, the patterning has to come back too.
#posture #movement #muscle #longevity #mobilityThe Dark Side of GLP-1 Weight LossKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-20 | This is the prediction I keep thinking about.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, the physician behind Muscle-Centric Medicine, believes we are about to trade an obesity epidemic for a sarcopenia epidemic, and that GLP1s only work long term when paired with protein and resistance training.
She's already thinking about what comes next, from supraphysiological muscle contraction to new stim devices.
#GLP1 #sarcopenia #muscle #longevity #womenshealthHow Much Protein Women ACTUALLY NeedKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-20 | Muscle is not just something you build in the gym. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon has spent her career arguing it's the organ that actually determines how well you age, and almost none of us have been taught to think about it that way.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, DO, is the founder of Muscle-Centric Medicine and the New York Times bestselling author of Forever Strong. She's spent over two decades studying muscle as the most overlooked organ in medicine.
The line that stuck with me most: she believes we're on track to trade an obesity epidemic for a sarcopenia epidemic, and most people won't see it coming until it's already happened. It's the kind of prediction I can't stop turning over, especially knowing how many women are on these medications right now without anyone telling them how to protect their muscles while they're on them.Dr. Gabrielle Lyon: Were About to Trade Obesity for Sarcopenia— The GLP-1 Warning No One Is ReadyKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-20 | Muscle is not just something you build in the gym. #longevity #WomensHealth #FemaleLongevity #Nutrition #FoodFirst #HealthOptimization #WellnessEverything I Use to Optimize My WorkdayKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-17 | Your environment quietly shapes what becomes effortless and what requires willpower.
I’ve tried to build my workspace so that the things I already want to prioritize can happen alongside the work I’m doing anyway. The goal isn’t adding more to my day. It’s making my environment work harder for me.
#HealthOptimization #Longevity #HealthyWorkspace #FemaleLongevity #WellnessWhy I Moved My Workouts to MiddayKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-16 | The “perfect” routine is useless if it works against the rest of your life.
Right now, protecting my most focused hours for deep work and moving training later has been a much better fit. I think health optimization should support your priorities, not compete with them.
#WorkoutTiming #StrengthTraining #Zone2 #VO2Max #FemaleLongevityHow I Fit 300+ Minutes of Zone 2 Every WeekKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-15 | One of the biggest changes I’ve made is designing my health routines around the life I already have, instead of constantly trying to find more time.
The more friction I can remove from something important, the easier it becomes to stay consistent for years. For me, stacking low-intensity movement with work is one of the simplest examples of that.
#Zone2Cardio #LongevityTraining #WomensHealth #HealthyHabits #FemaleLongevityMy Midday Routine For Optimal Productivity + LongevityKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-15 | A routine only gives you time back if it is actually built to. Mine is layered on purpose, movement stacked on top of recovery stacked on top of work, instead of treating each one as its own separate block of my day.
This is what my midday actually looks like right now. It shifts depending on what I am working on, but the structure underneath it stays the same. I would rather show you the real version than a polished one.

#Longevity #WomensHealth #FemaleLongevity #Movement #Exercise #HealthOptimization #WellnessWhy I Dont Cycle Sync My WorkoutsKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-13 | Cycle syncing your workouts has become popular advice, but a lot of what is out there is not well supported, and following it blindly can cost you. Automatically down regulating your training means giving up meaningful progress across half of every month, for a large portion of your life, which works directly against building the muscle, bone, and cardiovascular fitness that longevity depends on. I do not cycle sync. I train off my own data.
When I came back fatigued from four time zones in seven days, I pushed hard sessions later and went lighter first, not because of where I was in my cycle, but because of what my body and my wearables were actually telling me. Listen to your data, not a calendar.
#cyclesyncing #womensfitness #strengthtraining #hormonehealth #femalelongevity #womenshealth #trainingtipsYour Microbiome Starts Developing Earlier Than You ThinkKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-12 | Your gut microbiome is not something that suddenly becomes important when digestive symptoms appear.
Birth, childhood environment, antibiotic exposure, and other early experiences can all help shape the microbial baseline you carry forward. That does not mean your gut health is fixed for life, but it does make those early years especially important.
The goal is not simply having “good bacteria.” A healthy gut also depends on maintaining the intestinal barrier, keeping microbial populations balanced, and minimizing unwanted pathogens.
#GutHealth #GutMicrobiome #Microbiome #DigestiveHealth #HealthyAgingThe Natural Ozempic Your Body Already MakesKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-11 | GLP-1 has become synonymous with Ozempic, but the body produces this hormone naturally, and there are specific ways to support that process without medication.
Prioritizing protein at the start of meals, increasing soluble fiber, building muscle, and cutting back on ultra-processed foods all help regulate natural GLP-1 signaling and satiety.
With roughly 70% of the average American diet made up of ultra-processed food, this is a foundational lever most people are overlooking.
#GLP1 #NaturalOzempic #FemaleLongevity #MetabolicHealth #WomensHealth #GutHealth #WeightHealthThe 3 Gut Tests I Actually RecommendKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-10 | A gut test is only as useful as the person interpreting it.
I prefer practitioner-grade testing because the result itself is only one part of the process. You also need someone who understands gut health, knows what the markers mean together, and has experience actually improving the problems the test uncovers.
My three go-to options are Gut Zoomer, GI-MAP, and GI Effects. Just as importantly, avoid constantly switching tests. Using consistent testing over time makes it much easier to establish a baseline and follow real trends.
#GutHealth #GutTesting #Microbiome #FunctionalMedicine #DigestiveHealthYou Should Be Checking This Every DayKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-09 | One of the simplest gut health assessments does not require a lab. Look in the toilet.
A well-formed Bristol Stool Type 4 is generally what I am looking for, along with consistent bowel movements. Constipation, very loose stools, persistent bloating, or gas can all be useful signals that something deserves more attention.
We track sleep, steps, glucose, and heart rate. Your digestion is giving you useful feedback every day too.
#GutHealth #DigestiveHealth #BristolStoolChart #Microbiome #HealthyGutHow I Fixed My Gut HealthKayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-08 | Gut health is not static. Infections, antibiotics, stress, pathogens, and environmental exposures can all shift what is happening inside the gut, sometimes before the problem becomes obvious.
That is why I believe consistent gut testing matters. I have tracked my own markers for years, caught changes early, and even had a stack of abnormal gut data dismissed because conventional testing did not show the same picture.
Your gut influences far more than digestion. It connects to immune function, inflammation, autoimmunity, hormones, and long-term health.
#GutHealth #GutMicrobiome #AutoimmuneHealth #DigestiveHealth #WomensHealthHow To Fix Your Gut Microbiome (And It Likely Needs Fixing)Kayla Barnes-Lentz2026-08-08 | Gut health is not just about digestion. It can influence inflammation, immune function, nutrient absorption, skin health, brain health, cardiovascular health, and hormone balance.
I have been testing my gut for years, partly because repeated antibiotic exposure early in life left me dealing with dysbiosis, inflammation, and intestinal permeability. What I have learned is that identifying the real problem matters far more than following a generic gut protocol. I break down the practitioner-grade tests I use, the markers I pay attention to, and how I think about pathogens, bacterial balance, intestinal permeability, inflammation, immune function, and short-chain fatty acids. I also share what I am doing to rebuild my own gut and why rapidly adding fiber, probiotics, or supplements can sometimes make symptoms worse when the gut is already inflamed.
There is no one-size-fits-all gut protocol. The goal is to identify what is driving the dysfunction, work with an experienced practitioner, and build the right sequence for your body.

By combining brain MRI data, cognitive testing, and RNA-based blood biomarkers, researchers can estimate how quickly the brain is aging. A brain that tests five years younger may be associated with a dramatically lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s in the future.

Speed-of-processing training has been studied in a long-term randomized controlled trial, with evidence suggesting that it may reduce dementia risk by as much as 30%. Brain training is not just about memory. How quickly the brain processes information may also matter.
