A make noise 0 ctrl is providing the slow sequence of changes and we get to hear the progression at LFO rates (rhythm) and timbre and back again. Using a mutable instruments rings which is highly identifiable, but at LFO rates from the osc, the input behaves like a strike and at audio rate like a filter, which allows us to appreciate the deturning of the oscillator. The idea is to use the morphagenes a simple looper, except playing the genes reversed. So, when recording, I'm playing against the reversed loops. On youtube, the entire video is reversed so the looper output is playing forward again. This enables me to reverse the macrostructure of the morphagene performance such that it starts busy and gradually gets simpler and quieter as the video progresses. I wanted the beginning to sound overtly electronic and then gradually transform into the piano.

The morphagnes start with blank reels and are fed with tones played on the Prophet 6 through the H9. The Korg Monologue is used as a MIDI controller, providing transposition to the Morphagenes via the 1U midi module.
The patch at the beginning of the video is nearly a blank slate. Only the two audio paths are configured: Morphagene A to QPAS to Mimeophon and Morphagene B to 1U DSP. These are mixed in stereo using a mixup. This is a four minute section of a 30 minute capture, starting with no patch cables. I've been keeping musical snapshots of my work in progress since the Spring semester ended. Some of the recordings are more interesting than others. I hesitate releasing these studies, but also I just watched a video on restoring a Tonka Truck and enjoyed it immensely. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I make these snapshots because I need to remind myself of the results I'm getting as the software itself evolves. Often times I'll sanitize my software to the point where the surprise has been worked out of it. In retrospect, sometimes the bugs I fixed robbed it of some of its inherent musicality. Maybe the interesting parts are how I respond to some of the odd or unexpected results.
This portion of the video is quite boring to look at, it's basically me building some subtle boomy drum voices that you don't end up noticing until 3:06 and after that it gets worse because I'm just sitting there with headphones, assessing the result. You get to listen along with me. Yay!
This portion of the music fails to demonstrate any of the techniques I set out to achieve. The result you hear is a side effect of using the tools I developed to perform real time Risset rhythms. I find a lot of musicality in the processing that doesn't strictly produce the illusions I'm looking for. Is that failure?
