Worldwide NewsKevin Costner stars in Yellowstone, which was the most-watched scripted show on cable TV last year. Paramount NetworkParamount Plus launched Thursday, replacing CBS All Access with a new name and a bigger library of stuff to stream. But missing from its widened selection is the single TV show most associated with the Paramount name right now: Yellowstone. The epic cowboy drama has been a breakaway hit for the Paramount Network, one of ViacomCBS' cable channels. And Paramount Plus will have a new Yellowstone prequel to stream later this year, with another spinoff to come. But if you want to binge Yellowstone itself, you need to mosey over to Paramount Plus' rival Peacock, which has the exclusive rights to stream the first three seasons. When Yellowstone returns after its cliff-hanger finale last year -- an episode that drew in the biggest audience of any scripted TV show on cable last year -- you can expect season 4 will be on Peacock too. And Yellowstone isn't the only high-profile ViacomCBS program missing from Paramount Plus. If you're looking for Comedy Central's South Park, you need to check out HBO Max. Paramount Plus may be rebooting Nickelodeon teen sitcom iCarly, but if you're reliving the original right now, you're probably watching it on Netflix, the biggest subscription streaming competitor in the market. iCarly's first two season are among the most-watched programs on Netflix in the US right now. As confusing as it is, that's by design. Content licensing is a big business for ViacomCBS, and for the time being, ViacomCBS is betting that top-shelf programs can make more money -- and reach more eyeballs -- if they're off Paramount Plus rather than on it. These streaming-license deals are a lucrative business, one that's been growing in opportunity as a parade of deep-pocketed tech and media companies have been launching a flood of new services, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as the "streaming wars." Disney Plus, HBO Max, Apple TV Plus, Peacock, Discovery Plus and now Paramount Plus are all taking on stalwarts like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which are also shoveling yet more money into shows that they make themselves -- or license from others. Like all those that came before, Paramount Plus hopes its particular concoction of TV shows, movies and originals will hook you on its vision for TV's future. The Rays outfielder is mentioned in Bad Bunny’s latest song, Nadie Sabe, which was released at midnight Thursday as the first track from a new album. Bad Bunny sings, “Yo mismo me impresiono, como Randy Arozarena,” which translates to “I impress myself like Randy Arozarena.”Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena took to Instagram to thank rapper Bad Bunny for mentioning him in his latest song. [ Instagram ]Word spread quickly to Arozarena of the mention, as he posted his thanks on Instagram:“Gracias Gracias Gracias Gracias x 1000000=5 milliones de Gracias.”Arozarena also posted an Instagram story about being included in the song. Arozarena gained considerable popularity and notoriety after his dominant and entertaining performance for Team Mexico in the spring World Baseball Classic, with his arms crossed gesture becoming something of a world-wide phenomenon, spreading to all levels of baseball and even to other sports. The Rays this season also launched a popular Randy Land seating section for fans during Friday home games. Arozarena, 28, has established himself as a dynamic player over the last three years, and is the first player in major-league history to have a 20-homer, 20-steal season as a rookie and in his next two seasons. He was voted an All-Star for the first time this season, and he had a memorable performance in the Home Run Derby as well. Bad Bunny, whose given name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is a native Puerto Rican who is considered one of the leaders in getting Spanish-language music to achieve mainstream popularity, with a reggaeton and Latin trap style. He has been the most streamed artist on the Spotify platform the past three years, reaching a record 18.3 billion in 2022. He is the first non-English artist to rank first and he also has won three Grammy awards. The new album, which contains 22 tracks, is called Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana. In a video accompanying the Bad Bunny song there is a man riding a horse running quickly through a field. Perhaps that was a nod to Arozarena in January 2021 posting a video of himself racing a horse.• • •Sign up for the Sports Today newsletter to get daily updates on the Bucs, Rays, Lightning and college football across Florida. But if you stick around for all of John Wick: Chapter 4’s nearly 170 minutes, at least you’ll get a small extra reward at the end. The latest entry in the series about the assassin who just wants to hang up his pistols and live his life in peace does have a scene at the end of the credits. It isn’t long, and it isn’t completely critical to the plot, but it’s thematically relevant, co-writers Michael Finch and Shay Hatten told Polygon in a recent interview. It’s also pretty cool. Either way is enough reason to stick around. But if you can’t, or you’d just like a little explanation, here’s what happens in John Wick: Chapter 4’s post-credits scene.[Ed. note: This story contains spoilers for all of John Wick: Chapter 4, both before and after the credits.]John Wick: Chapter 4 ends on a solemn note with John’s funeral. (No, it isn’t clear whether he’s really dead.) But that isn’t all the movie has up its sleeve. After the credits, we see Caine (Donnie Yen) headed to visit his daughter with a bouquet of flowers. As he walks through a crowd, Akira (Rina Sawayama) walks toward him and unsheathes a blade, preparing to avenge the death of her father, Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), who Caine killed earlier in the movie. Finch and Hatten told Polygon that her hunger for revenge is the central point of the scene.“One of the themes of this piece was to demonstrate the vertical reach of the Table,” Finch said. The High Table is the much-referenced shadowy organization that governs assassins in the John Wick movies. “Because of the events that happen in the Osaka Continental, she goes in full-force. What she doesn’t understand, and what we’re trying to demonstrate, is that you once you step into the Table, there is no stepping out. She was locked in once Caine says, [...] ‘I’ll be waiting for you.’ He knows that she’s going to come, because she’s a part of the Table. [...] She’s all in, she’s gonna go after Caine for revenge. Her story is John Wick story, in a lot of ways.”This cycle of vengeance and violence is critical to the themes of the John Wick series, Hatten said.“It shows the cyclical and cruel nature of this world, that once you get in there, it is impossible to get out,” Hatten said. “I think that’s why we empathize with John so much. No matter how many people he kills, you recognize, well, he didn’t really have a choice. He fell into this life, and now he’s just trying to get out and honor the memory of his wife. But it’s a really challenging thing to do.”While all of this plays into the themes of the series, including revenge and the idea that the High Table sits above even the most legendary assassins that serve under it, it’s also just an exciting little cap to the movie’s story — or maybe a tease of what’s to come for the series’ future.

The composer issued an Instagram video and revealed that his son, Nicholas, 43, has entered hospice care.“I want to thank you for the outpouring of messages of support for my son, Nick. He’s now been moved into a hospice and he’s battling away, ” he said in the video. “I think he’s over the worst of this first bout of pneumonia that he’s got as a result of his cancer, which is just ghastly. We’re all here and the family here has gathered around, and it was the right place for us all to be I think.“I’m going to go see Nick in a minute and I’m going to pass on all of the fantastic wishes that I’ve had for him from everywhere all around the world, ” he added. Webber, age 74, talked about his 43-year-old son’s illness earlier this month.“As my friends and family know, he has been fighting gastric cancer for the last 18 months and Nick is now hospitalized, ” Webber wrote at the time. “I, therefore, have not been able to attend the recent previews of Bad Cinderella and as things stand, I will not be able to cheer on its wonderful cast, crew and orchestra on opening night this Thursday. ”“We are all praying that Nick will turn the corner, ” Webber continued. “He is bravely fighting with his indomitable humor, but at the moment my place is with him and the family. ”Nicholas is a Grammy-nominated composer, scoring Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella original cast album in 2021.
#webber #newsheadlines #newstodayworld #bbcnewsworld #usanewstoday #newstodayupdate #4 years since the last LAUSD strike what’s different this timeWorldwide News2023-03-24 | When LAUSD teachers went on strike in 2019 it was the first time such an action had taken place in 30 years. Now, just four years later, schools are shut down as teachers and service workers alike walk off the job. It begs the question: How did the district wind up here again? The answers require a close look at both the strike of 2019 and the “unprecedented, ” as they are oft referred to, events that have taken place since. It also requires understanding that the two strikes are very different. The 2019 strike was led solely by the 35, 000-member teachers’ union, United Teachers Los Angeles, in the name of smaller classes, less power to charter schools, less standardized testing and more nurses, among other issues. It lasted for six highly disruptive days and concluded with a deal reached between the union and then Superintendent Austin Beutner inside the walls of City Hall. This time around, the strike is not led by teachers, but by the service workers in SEIU Local 99. This 30, 000-member union represents bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, instructional aides and special education assistants. The contract agreement reached at the end of the strike in 2019 did not include pay raise concessions from the district. The increases agreed upon were the same that the district had on the table prior to the strike — an immediate 3% pay raise and another 3% the following year — Beutner said in a recent interview. This time around pay raises are the central issue. SEIU is seeking a much heftier raise of 30% over time plus an additional pay bump for their lowest-paid members. UTLA members are joining them on the picket line in a show of solidarity.“There’s this genuine joy from SEIU that teachers are behind them, ” said history teacher Ron Bauer at a rally on Wednesday. “We went on strike in 2019, but they have been without a fair contract for far too long. ”As a result of the unions’ collective action, schools will be shut down for the duration of the strike. Back in 2019, the district was able to keep classrooms open by bringing in a wave of substitute teachers. This union solidarity is a powerful playing card for the service workers, who have historically struggled to organize around contract demands. This strike is the first time they have walked off the job since 1969, said SEIU Communications Director Blanca Gallegos.“The district would like to find a way to have things seem as normal as possible, in part because they want to have learning continuing… but also because in a negotiating stance they want to make it seem like they have the power to determine how things are moving forward, ” said John Rogers, an education professor at UCLA.“Without the teachers’ support, SEIU would not be able to shut things down in this clear and powerful fashion, ” he added. While there are different superintendents, UTLA presidents and demands at play in the two strikes, the lead-up to the 2019 and 2023 walkouts looked strikingly similar.

The city is working to collaborate with L. A. County’s emergency medical services agency, and was seeking funding and resources to assist businesses in repairing the damage, Alex Gillman, Montebello’s public information officer, confirmed Thursday. Montebello’s industrial district on Washington Boulevard and Vail Avenue was visited by the rare landspout tornado on Wednesday morning. The unwelcome guest tore through the roofing of buildings, lifting debris high overhead. Onlookers reported that the loud gusts lifted gas station signs, trash and tree limbs toward the mountains. One person at a private business suffered minor injuries. The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado hit around 11:20 a. m. and estimated the tornado’s peak wind speed was 110 mph, and lasted for three minutes. That made it the strongest recorded in the Los Angeles area since 1983, the National Weather Service announced Thursday. Scientists measure the strength of tornadoes through what is called the Enhanced Fujita Scale or EF Scale. The scale became operational on Feb. 1, 2007, and is used to assign a tornado a ‘rating’ based on estimated wind speeds and related damage, according to the National Weather Service. Wednesday’s Montebello tornado was rated at EF1 on an EF Scale of 0 (“weak”) to 5 (“violent”). At 11 mph, it was at the upper end of EF1, just shy of “strong. ” An EF2 tornado has winds between111 and 136 mph. It was the strongest tornado recorded in the area since an F2 twister in March 1983. The last time an EF1 tornado occurred in the area was in January 1998 in Long Beach. An F0 tornado touched down in Inglewood in December 2014, according to NWS. Forecasters said Wednesday’s twister was 0. 42 miles long and was 50 yards wide, blanketing what is essentially a district of industrial buildings, which definitely felt the brunt. A list of effected businesses is being compiled, but of the 17 effected properties, 11 were red tagged as of this morning. According to Gillman, a task force has been created and met to expedite the permitting and construction activities that will take place on those damaged structures. According to residents, the streets around the epicenter were closed for several hours, and nearby homes and businesses lost power from Washington Boulevard east to Whittier Boulevard, and from Vail Avenue south to Greenwood Avenue. A gas line was severed, fire sprinklers broke, all the skylights shattered and a 5, 000-square-foot (465-square-meter) section of roof was “just gone, ” business owner, Michael Turner said. He added his polyester fiber business, Turner Fiberfill, could be closed for months.

She even made mention of her long career as a scream queen and the moviegoers who supported her over the years, and emphasized, “We just won an Oscar together!”Curtis faced stiff competition from The Banshees of Inisherin’s Kerry Condon, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Angela Bassett, The Whale’s Hong Chau, and her Everything Everywhere All at Once costar Stephanie Hsu, and for weeks it was anyone’s guess who would emerge victorious. Curtis thanked her Everything Everywhere collaborators and emphasized the group effort that went into her victory: “We just won an Oscar!”Curtis mounted one of the more traditional yet unconventional campaigns. The industry vet made her way into the best-supporting-actress category for her comedic turn as Deirdre the IRS agent in Everything Everywhere All at Once, most likely buoyed by the outpouring of industry love for the best-picture front-runner. Once she nabbed the nomination, Curtis went to work, homing in on her decades-long career in Hollywood and also embracing her status as the “OG nepo baby,” highlighting her Hollywood lineage as the youngest daughter of Oscar nominees Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis in interviews and award speeches. At the SAG Awards, Curtis triumphed over the same lineup of competitors that she faced this evening in her category—the first major sign that she was a serious threat to take home Oscar gold. Still, it was anyone’s guess whether the onetime scream queen would triumph come Oscar night. Curtis invoked her nepo-baby status in her acceptance speech, mentioning her parents and their own Oscar nominations, and shouted to the heavens the news of her win. Despite her four decades in the industry, Everything Everywhere All at Once marks Curtis’s first Oscar nomination and win.

The biggest talking point was Casemiro's straight red card in the 33rd minute, which after a VAR review reduced United to 10 men. The Brazilian's studs-up tackle went over the ball and onto the shins of Carlos Alcaraz, and while Anthony Taylor initially only showed yellow, he changed his decision after consulting the monitor. Before and after the disciplinary action, the match was a lively affair, and United were positive even after being reduced a man. Yet neither side could find an opener, as Theo Walcott was thwarted multiple times in front of goal and Gavin Bazunu made a significant number of quality saves. Additionally, each side struck the post more than once, as James Ward-Prowse grazed the crossbar with a free-kick as he looked to equal David Beckham's set-piece scoring record, and Bruno Fernandes saw a second-half effort agonisingly saved off the inside of the post. One sour note saw Alejandro Garnacho limp off late on following a tackle from Kyle Walker-Peters. He headed straight down the tunnel and was later seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches wearing a protective boot. United now sit 16 points back of leaders Arsenal, and look truly dead in the water for the Premier League title race. Instead, they will be looking over their shoulder, now focused on holding off Tottenham and Liverpool behind them. Southampton, meanwhile, still sit bottom of the league with 22 points, two back of safety. That means lotsWorldwide News2023-03-12 | Sitting in her family home in East Los Angeles, Rosa Manriquez kept her eyes on the TV screen as a flood of white smoke came pouring out of the roof of the Sistine Chapel 6, 300 miles away — a century-old signal that the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church had chosen a new leader. Manriquez, now 70, is the mother of two lesbian daughters who supports female ordination to the priesthood. On that day, 10 years ago, she waited impatiently to see who would emerge from behind the red curtain on a Vatican balcony as the head of the church she both loved and struggled against.“So I see this man come out, and I think, ‘There’s something different about this guy, ’” she said. “And then I was like, ‘He’s Latino! Oh my God! ’”A decade later, Manriquez says she does not agree with everything Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires now known as Pope Francis, has said and done. But like many Californians, she has come to respect and even love him.“I’m not declaring him a saint; I’m not into titles, ” she said. “But I think this is the first pope since John XXIII who, rather than saying, ‘Your holiness, ’ I would say, ‘My brother. ’”After Pope Benedict XVI resigned in February 2013, Paul Baumann, former editor of Commonweal Magazine, wrote that he hoped the next pontiff would be “a bit of a Californian” — sun-nier, more optimistic and more willing to engage with the modern world than his recent predecessors. It was a statement that turned out to be prophetic. In many ways, Pope Francis is a buzzy pontiff in the California style. And being a California anything means getting lots of love — and lots of derision and disdain. He has clashed with the state’s most powerful Catholic leaders — including José Gomez, archbishop of Los Angeles, the largest Catholic diocese in America, and Salvatore Cordileone, archbishop of San Francisco — on the issue of denying communion to political leaders who support abortion rights. But he is also the first pope to hail from Latin America, a point of pride and connection for many Catholics in a state that is roughly 40% Latino, and he has consistently refused to remain stuck in the hierarchical, traditionalist thinking that has characterized the church’s bureaucracy at the Vatican. He has prioritized the environment and the poor, struck a more welcoming tone with LGBTQ Catholics, and appointed more women to leadership roles in the Vatican than any pope before him — demonstrating a commitment to values many Californians share. It’s a stance that has gained him enmity.“The church is on the move, and some people don’t want to be on the move, ” said Father Allan Deck, a scholar of theology and Latino studies at Loyola Marymount University. “They want to remain where they are. ”Immediately after his election on March 13, 2013, it was clear the pope “from the end of the world” would be doing things a different way.

(Here is the full WBC schedule. ) The Americans, heavy favorites thanks to a roster loaded with All-Stars, nevertheless fell behind early before taking the lead in the third inning. From there, the Americans were able to cruise to a 6-2 victory. It's been six years since the most recent WBC, so it's worth rehashing the basics before delving into more details about Team USA's win. The main points of emphasis are that the 20 teams are split into four five-team pools; the teams in each pool will play one another once apiece, with the top two teams advancing to the next round; from there, the WBC then amounts to an eight-team, single-elimination tournament to determine the champion. Now, with that out of the way, you can scroll below to find three things to know from Team USA's opening victory, as well as CBS Sports' live blog coverage. If Team USA is to repeat as WBC champions, then that title will likely be credited to an outstanding lineup. Imagine how surprising it was, then, to see the Americans fail to plate a run through the first two innings against Vance Worley, a former big-league pitcher who had struggled in a second-division independent league last season. Team USA's bats started to come alive in the third inning, when Nolan Arenado tied the game on a double that scored his St. Louis Cardinals teammate Paul Goldschmidt. Arenado himself then scored on a line-drive single from Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker, giving the Americans a 2-1 lead. Kyle Schwarber would extend their advantage an inning later, launching a three-run home-run to make it 5-1. Arenado would strike again in the sixth, doubling again to give the Americans a 6-1 edge. Great Britain would get a run back in the seventh, but it didn't matter. The Americans had a firm enough grasp on the lead to make it count. Adam Wainwright, the longtime St. Louis Cardinals ace, received the nod in Saturday's game. Unfortunately, he scuffled early. Great Britain's second batter of the night, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson, launched a solo home run to put them ahead 1-0 in the early stages:Wainwright was far from perfect after that, but he finished his night having allowed just that one run over four innings. He yielded five hits and a walk, and struck out just four batters on 49 pitches. Still, Cardinals fans in particular have reason to be concerned -- his fastball averaged 85 mph, or three full ticks below his average from last season. The rest of the USA pitching staff had a better night overall. Tampa Bay Rays reliever Jason Adam threw a perfect frame, and Colorado Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland held Great Britain to a run over two innings of work and the Pirates' David Bednar closed it out. The Americans will reconvene on Sunday night for a 10 p. m. first pitch against Mexico.

Hawaii has never observed daylight saving time under the Uniform Time Act. Breaking news: Eruption “Likely Imminent” After Kilauea Volcano Stopped Briefly. Hawaii opted out of Daylight Saving Time 50+ years ago. Having said no to DST a half-century ago, Hawaii is still waiting for the rest of the county and the rest of the world to eliminate this practice of changing time. Hawaii once tried DST back in 1933, but only for three weeks. On April 26, 1933, the Territorial Legislature passed a bill that placed Hawaii on DST from the last Sunday of April all the way to September’s last Sunday. On May 21, 1933, three weeks after passing the law, the law was revoked. It was in effect again during World War II, when it was called Hawaiian War Time. Hawaii officially opted out of the Uniform Time Act in 1967. Until this fall, Hawaii will be 3 hours earlier than the west coast. And the east coast will be 6 hours later than Hawaii. Mountain states are 4 hours later, and central states are 5 hours. Question: Why has Hawaii never adopted Daylight Savings Time? Answer: First and foremost, Hawaii’s sunrise and sunset times do not vary much. Being much further south than any of the mainland states and at a latitude close to Mexico City, there’s no significant advantage to daylight savings in Hawaii. The concept of daylight savings was, in theory, that it adjusts the time to make use of available natural light. With Hawaii near the equator, sunrise and sunset time don’t vary nearly as much as is the case further to the north. Read on as to whether this theory even holds water. The other U. S. locations and territories that do not have daylight savings are:Arizona (most of the state)American SamoaGuamNorthern Mariana IslandsPuerto RicoUnited States Virgin IslandsExcept for Arizona, the above locations are in a similar situation to Hawaii in terms of latitude. Arizona unsuccessfully tried daylight savings in the 1960s before opting out. Why daylight savings? Daylight savings started in the U. S. more than one hundred years ago, in 1918, during World War I. While the stated reason was to benefit farmers and save fuel, it is now largely believed that it promoted retail shopping in the evenings with more light. It was also considered beneficial to health since, with longer days, people would spend more time with recreation and sports. After World War I, Daylight Saving Time was only observed in New York City. That is until 1942, when a national DST policy came into effect. In 1966 the Uniform Time Act said that the U. S. would observe six months of standard time and six months of daylight savings each year. States had to opt in or out, so cities and counties could no longer decide on DST. Arizona opted out. Since then, the U. S. has moved to the more extended observance of DST, which since 2005 has been eight months each year.

When to Set Your Clock Forward HowWorldwide News2023-03-12 | Most Americans, including Illinois residents, will shift their clocks ahead by an hour this weekend, signaling warmer temperatures and brighter days ahead. The official time change will take place at 2 a.m. Sunday, with clocks jumping forward to 3 a.m. in states that observe daylight saving time. Under provisions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which amended the Uniform Time Act of 1966, daylight saving time begins every year on the second Sunday in March. That time change will remain in effect until the first Sunday in November, under the law. The change will push sunset to nearly 7 p.m., a barrier that will be broken on St. Patrick’s Day next week, according to officials. While we'll see more hours of daylight, that'll come with a tradeoff - one less hour of sleep. Here's everything you need to know about DST, including its background, the controversy surrounding it and how to cope with losing some vital sleeping time. When does daylight saving time start? Under provisions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which amended the Uniform Time Act of 1966, daylight saving time will begin on the second Sunday in March, which in 2023 will fall on March 12. LocalThe time change will take place at 2 a.m. At that time, the clocks will jump directly to 3 a.m., differing from the autumn time change when clocks "fall back" to 1 a.m. upon the conclusion of daylight saving time. When does daylight saving time end? Daylight saving time will end at 2 a.m. on Nov. 5, 2023, in what is known as the annual "fall back."What is daylight saving time? Daylight saving time is a changing of the clocks that typically begins in spring and ends in fall in what is often referred to as "spring forward" and "fall back."Under the conditions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. On those days, clocks either shift forward or backward one hour. But it wasn't always that way. Clocks used to spring ahead on the first Sunday in April and remained that way until the final Sunday in October, but a change was put in place in part to allow children to trick-or-treat in more daylight. In the United States, daylight saving time lasts for a total of 34 weeks, running from early-to-mid March to the beginning of November in states that observe it. Some people like to credit Benjamin Franklin as the inventor of daylight saving time when he wrote in a 1784 essay about saving candles and saying, "Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." But that was meant more as satire than a serious consideration. Germany was the first to adopt daylight saving time on May 1, 1916, during World War I as a way to conserve fuel. The rest of Europe followed soon after. The United States didn't adopt daylight saving time until March 19, 1918. It was unpopular and abolished after World War I. On Feb.

In what has become a familiar Russian tactic since early October, the Kremlin’s forces struck Ukraine from afar Thursday while the ground battles in the country’s east largely remained mired in a grinding stalemate. The apparent aim of attacking power stations and other infrastructure is to weaken Ukraine’s resolve and compel the Ukrainian government to negotiate peace on Moscow’s terms. Ukrainian authorities scrambled to counter the consequences of the latest bombardment, part of a recurring cycle of urban smash-and-repair that has brought little change in the course of the war, which recently entered its second year. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said in an assessment that “these missile strikes will not undermine Ukraine’s will or improve Russia’s positions on the front lines. ”Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov said the Russians are striking civilian infrastructure, because they can’t efficiently target Ukrainian military assets.“The Russians lack data about the location of Ukrainian troops and weapons, so they are targeting civilian infrastructure and using the same old methods of attacking civilians to sow fear and panic in the society, ” he said. “Ukraine has survived the winter and Russia’s strikes on the energy system in the spring hardly make any sense. ”Power and water were restored in Kyiv, said Serhii Popko, the head of the city’s military administration. Popko said that about 30% of consumers in the capital remained without heating and that repair work was ongoing. Power supplies were fully restored in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, private provider DTEK said Friday afternoon. Around 60% of households in the city of Kharkiv that were knocked off grid by Russia’s missile strikes on Thursday were also back online, authorities said, though significant damage remained in the Zhytomyr and Kharkiv regions in Ukraine’s northwest and northeast. In another sign of normality quickly returning, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Friday. Marin accompanied President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and senior military officers at the funeral of one of Ukrain’e best-known fighters and commanders who was killed in fighting near the devastated eastern city of Bakhmut. The service for Dmytro Kotsiubailo, killed a few days earlier at the age of 27, was held at the cathedral of Kyiv’s St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery. Many of the thousands of mourners clutched flowers, and the crowd knelt in silence as Kotsiubailo’s coffin was carried out of the church toward Maidan Square. Zelenskyy and Marin also laid flowers at a nearby memorial to fallen Ukrainian soldiers.

If one were still unsure as to whether Elba wants to be the next James Bond... that should put an end to all that clamour. And a good thing, too, for while I like Bond and loved Daniel Craig's work in the last five movies, the role takes its toll on the actor. And we need an actor like Elba for more varied and more interesting roles. Like Luther. I have fallen in love with and out of the original TV series more times than I care to count. It was the actor himself (and occasionally Ruth Wilson as Luther's overarching nemesis Alice Morgan) whose charisma and undeniable intensity kept me watching even when the show devolved into utter shlock. Luther: The Fallen Sun, I am happy to say, is not for the most part shlock. Penned by the series creator Neil Cross and directed by Jamie Payne, who also directed the entirety of the fifth season, the film has Luther's crimes and excesses on duty (and tendency to play fast and loose with the law) finally catching up with him and he goes behind bars. And the person responsible for his downfall is Andy Serkis' psychopathic tech billionaire (I can almost hear Elon Musk gnashing his teeth — the guy has earlier said that he despises how Hollywood portrays billionaires) David Robey, who moonlights as a serial killer. Once he spots Luther investigating one of his murders, he decides to get him out of the picture. But it's Luther in a Luther movie. The guy is a force of nature. Of course, he gets out and goes on a quest to get SerkisNow, Robey is a particularly nasty piece of work. Even other serial killers might be horrified by his actions. Having felt powerless for most of his life, he became rich thanks to his tech brilliance. And now he has this need to feel a sense of power and control over his victims. He has created a system in place in which he and his followers witness people being tortured and killed. He is something of a cad (as the Brits would say), all right. And Luther, haunted by a failed promise he made to one of Robey's many victims' mother, wants to set things right. Luther: The Fallen Sun is, for all intents and purposes a feature-length season of the show. Whether that is a good thing or not is quite subjective. Speaking for myself, watching Elba once again don that tweed coat and red tie like a superhero costume and brooding on a rooftop with skyscrapers in the background like Batman — it was almost restorative to my cold. There is action, there are thrills there are same-old outbursts from Luther — for better or worse, he is the same man though slightly mellow — and there is a lot of violence. Being a film with a bigger budget than a typical TV production means that there is a lot more spectacle, albeit a grisly kind of spectacle.

Durant, who has played just three games for the Phoenix Suns thus far, was a late scratch for Wednesday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder after suffering the injury during a pregame workout. The Arizona Republic reported that there was fear within the Suns organization that the superstar forward could be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season and the start of the playoffs with a Grade 2 ankle sprain, but according to Charania's initial two-week timeline, the current prognosis appears to be a bit more optimistic. Video of the injury shows Durant warming up before Phoenix's game against the Thunder, in which he slips on the floor and tweaks his left ankle while going toward the basket for a layup. After remaining on the ground for a few moments following the fall, Durant was able to finish his workout. However, Phoenix ultimately decided to hold him out of the game -- a 31-point win over the Thunder."I feel bad for him because he feels bad, " Suns coach Monty Williams told reporters. "I saw his face and -- I've been around him so many times -- I know what he's feeling, and I don't want him feeling that way at all. "A knee (MCL) injury earlier this season forced Durant to miss 20 games, including several that came after he was traded to the Suns. In the three games Durant has played in Phoenix, he has been stellar. The Suns have not lost with Durant in the lineup, and he is averaging almost 27 points per game on 69 percent shooting. The Suns traded an enormous package to land him in the hopes that he can take a team that lost in the 2021 Finals over the hump. Health is one of the major concerns about his ability to do so. A two- or three-week absence is relatively short in the grand scheme of things, but those are games Phoenix really would have liked to have used to help integrate Durant into their team structure. Now they'll have to do so on the fly with a version of Durant that will be coming off of an ankle injury.

WeWorldwide News2023-03-10 | Brian Harrington was looking for a bigger house in 2021. He and his wife were expecting a baby and were able to work from home. They settled on the Riverside County community of Menifee, about 54 miles from their Anaheim home. Harrington, who works as a public relations consultant for Bitcoin startups, searched online for “homes in low 600s Southern California” and was directed to the fast-growing corridor of communities along Interstate 15 and 215. The couple ended up buying a home in Menifee’s Audie Murphy Ranch community. “Love the house, love the neighborhood, ” Harrington said, noting that the area “feels like Orange County. ”As far as downsides go, shopping is limited to “only box stores and big chain restaurants, ” he said. “I haven’t found my hole-in-the-wall dive bar that I love yet. ”Big coastal cities in California, led by San Francisco and Los Angeles, have seen declines in population in recent years. Some residents have left for cheaper housing in other states. But during the same period, some California suburbs like Menifee have seen significant population booms. From 2019 through 2022, 1. 02 million more people moved out of homes and businesses in California than into them, a Times analysis of U. S. Postal Service data shows. The data show the five ZIP Codes with the most net move-ins were all suburbs or exurbs around Sacramento and Southern California, including cities like Irvine, Menifee and Walnut. These fast-growing spots are generally suburbs with new housing coming on line. Some, like Irvine, are high-priced and close to job centers. Others, like Menifee, are farther out from urban cores but offer bigger homes and more outdoor space for the money. As the practice of remote work rose during the pandemic, far-flung communities made more sense for some. While Harrington stayed in California, many others have left the state entirely. The Postal Service’s change-of-address data support the theory that California’s shrinking population is largely the result of net migration out of the state, experts say. No data set is perfect, and Paul Ong, director of the Center for Neighborhood Knowledge at UCLA, added a note of caution: “There is a bias to reporting out moves in many situations, ” he said, referring to change of address requests filed with the post office. The USPS data include mostly permanent and some temporary moves for individuals, families and businesses. Of the more than 1, 700 ZIP codes reviewed, 58% showed more move-outs than move-ins during the four-year span. USPS processed about 36 million address changes in 2021 nationwide. Requests can be submitted online or using a paper form at a post office. When scaled for population, net move-out numbers in California are middle of the pack among states nationally. One of those Californians planning to leave the state is Kevin Britton, who has steady work in Southern California and loves to ride his motorcycle to the sun-splashed cities of Malibu and Santa Monica.

His defense attorneys cast Ridley-Thomas as a lifelong public servant who represented the poorest communities of L. A. County and relied on USC, the largest private employer in his district, to help meet the social and health needs of his most vulnerable constituents. But to federal prosecutors, Ridley-Thomas was a conniving operator eager to “monetize” his position and conceal a sexual harassment investigation into his son, Sebastian, then a state Assembly member. To preserve the family’s political brand, the elder Ridley-Thomas helped engineer his son’s abrupt resignation from the Legislature, supposedly for medical reasons, and squeezed USC for favors to benefit his son, including a professorship and a scholarship, they say. Prosecutors allege he also routed $100, 000 through USC’s social work school to boost his son’s nonprofit. In exchange, prosecutors contend, Ridley-Thomas steered county contracts to USC’s financially troubled social work school as part of a corrupt scheme with its then-dean, Marilyn Flynn.“This case is about power, privilege and lies, ” Assistant U. S. Atty. Thomas Rybarczyk told jurors during his opening statement. He promised that during the next month of trial, they would see and hear testimony of Ridley-Thomas “abusing the power of his office” and “the lies he told to cover it up. ”Wearing a dark suit and burgundy tie, Ridley-Thomas, 68, watched quietly behind black frame glasses, occasionally whispering to his legal team. His wife, Avis, sat in the front row, while friends and supporters filled some of the courtroom’s pews. Ridley-Thomas is defending against a 19-count indictment that accuses him of bribery, conspiracy, and honest services mail and wire fraud. If convicted, the charges carry up to decades in prison. The accusations in the case stem from his time on L. County’s Board of Supervisors, when he was one of five people that oversee a $30-billion annual budget and vote on contracts for child welfare, mental health and other public services. The alleged scheme centers on votes Ridley-Thomas made on contracts and agreements related to the Department of Children and Family Services; training programs for probation employees; and remote mental health treatment for at-risk youths, among others. Ridley-Thomas’ defense attorney, Galia Amram, leaned into the complexities of being a county supervisor as she flatly denied the elaborate corruption alleged by prosecutors.“You just heard a story that you were asked to believe — the story of Mark Ridley-Thomas selling his vote, ” Amram said in her opening statement. “That did not happen. ”Instead, she said, Ridley-Thomas had established legitimate partnerships with USC leaders long before any alleged conspiracy, including with Flynn and then-President C. L. Max Nikias.

The entrepreneur, 39, alleged in court documents obtained by Page Six Wednesday that Woods, 47, and his agents unlawfully locked her out of their shared Florida home and she has not been allowed her to return since. She claims in the October 2022 filing she had an “oral tenancy agreement” that gave her the right to reside in the Hobe Sound, Fla., estate for a “certain duration of time.”According to Herman, the agreement was in place for six years — the duration of her relationship with Woods. She also claims that part of the deal was that the residence would be “fully paid” by Woods’ Jupiter Island Irrevocable Homestead Trust. #EricaHerman #newsnow #newstodaydonaldtrump #newstodayheadlines #newstodayfox #usanewstoday #He’s filed more than 2000 disability lawsuits in California. This caseWorldwide News2023-03-09 | It all started with a parking spot. On a breezy afternoon in September 2017, Chris Langer couldn’t find one that would accommodate his van and the ramp he uses for his wheelchair behind a San Diego lobster shop. What transpired next has been the subject of arguments before two federal courts and opened a wide door to more federal disability lawsuits in California, home to more of these lawsuits in the last litigious decade than any other state. Four months after that fall day, Langer filed a disability access lawsuit in federal court against the lobster shop, a smoke shop in the same building and the building’s owners, Milan and Diana Kiser, claiming a violation of his rights. Langer has filed more than 2, 000 claims like those over the past decade or so. For the last two years, his case against the Kisers was headed to defeat, with a federal judge ruling against him and questioning his motivation. But last month, Langer prevailed before a three-judge panel on the 9th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Attorneys who argue federal disability cases say that victory, which itself is being appealed, could open the floodgates to more federal disability rights lawsuits after a brief slowdown last year. If Langer wins the next round, attorneys who represent businesses sued in disability cases worry that the case would set a precedent for a broader claim of standing to sue among plaintiffs in California disabled access lawsuits. Typically, these cases are settled — out of tens of thousands of federal disability rights lawsuits filed nationally, only a couple of dozen have ever gone to trial, according to a review of federal appellate court decisions by Texas attorney Richard Hunt, who defends businesses sued for disability rights claims. In most other states, any awards won in federal disability rights cases can only be used to pay legal fees. California law allows for extra compensation that can benefit plaintiffs in those cases. The Unruh Civil Rights Act provides an additional award to plaintiffs themselves, which begin at a minimum of $4, 000. And that’s a major reason why California has had more than 30, 000 federal disability rights lawsuits in the last decade, far outpacing the rest of the country. Langer declined to be interviewed, according to his attorney, who said people like Langer are forcing businesses to comply with a law they should already be following.“There’s no three-letter agency that’s going around and enforcing these laws, ” said Langer’s attorney, Dennis Price. “What my clients are doing is basic code enforcement, and that’s what California law specifically encourages. ”The Americans with Disabilities Act is one of a few federal laws that operate by turning their enforcement over to the people, with occasional interventions by the U. Department of Justice.

Steele St. One car fled, " the Tacoma Police Department tweeted. "No injuries were reported. A gun was recovered. A 53-year-old male was booked for Drive-By Shooting. The investigation is ongoing. "That tweet does not name Kemp, specifically. However, Kemp is listed on the Pierce County Corrections Booking website with the drive-by shooting listed as the charge. The shooting occurred near the Tacoma Mall, and the investigation is ongoing. Since retiring, Kemp has been active in the movement to bring the NBA back to Seattle after the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City. He has operated a number of businesses in the Seattle area over the years. He also played for the Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers in a decorated 14-year NBA career. Kemp has dealt with other legal problems in the past. In 2006, he was arrested for drug possession in Washington after he and another man were found with cocaine, marijuana, and a semiautomatic pistol. Kemp was detained again in 2006, this time in Houston, for misdemeanor marijuana possession. Now, however, he appears to be dealing with the most severe situation yet.
#kemp #newslive #newstodaydonaldtrump #usanewstoday #newstodaycnn #newstodayworld #Are Southern California students and teachers breathing clean airWorldwide News2023-03-09 | Tina Andres hates the red light. And this time, it’s not even blinking. It’s just solid red, as in, change-the-filter-now red. The air purifier in teacher Andres’ classroom at MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School in Santa Ana was installed in 2021. But the first time the light went red no new filters could be found, a result of supply chain woes. Now, about two months after installing a replacement, the warning signal is back. Andres, a sixth-grade math teacher who’s taught in the same class, Room 7, for 30 years, said the air problem isn’t just about COVID-19.“We have mold issues, ” she said. “There are issues like this all over the county. Some of these schools are old.“Teachers just want to know that the air quality is good, ” she added. The issue isn’t trivial, or misunderstood. Studies have linked dirty air inside of schools — particularly in communities with dirty air outside of schools — to a variety of health conditions and learning delays. It’s also known that a proven, cost-effective way to clean up school air is to improve a school’s ventilation system. California has been a leader in recognizing this. Even before COVID-19 prompted everybody to think about ventilation, California imposed rules aimed at making sure new school buildings offered clean air. And on Jan. 1, California became the first state to require every school, regardless of age, to assess and, if feasible, to upgrade their ventilation systems. The mandate has come after billions of state and federal dollars, mostly related to the pandemic, were made available to schools to improve their air quality. Los Angeles Unified now spends about $20 million a year to inspect and maintain more than 115, 000 air filtration systems. Still, a new national study from the Environmental Law Institute suggests it isn’t enough. California, as with other states, has substantial room for improvement when it comes to making school air safe, the study found. The study cites many of the issues also raised by Andres, as well as other teachers, parents and environmental advocates. For starters, there’s no centralized agency to oversee school indoor air quality. State and local air quality districts focus on outdoor air, so questions about indoor air often bounce between various state departments and local agencies. School districts are left to inspect and police themselves. Also, loopholes in the new state law allow many schools — particularly older campuses, which often serve the neediest students — to avoid meeting the new standards if they don’t have heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC systems, at all, or if their systems aren’t strong enough to push air through upgraded filters. A number of Southern California school districts reached for comment on this story, from Big Bear to Pomona to East Whitter, either didn’t respond or simply said they had no news to share about work to improve ventilation.

The joint statement condemning the law was made by Equity President Kate Shindle and Executive Director Al Vincent, Jr. Equity had released a statement on January 27 condemning the growing number of attacks on transgender people “often framed as attacks on drag performance. ”According to today’s statement, the union is currently engaged in outreach efforts to Equity theater across Tennessee to ensure the safety of national theatrical touring companies making stops in the state. Equity says it is working closely with the Broadway League – the trade organization that represents theater owners and producers – on the outreach.“Culture wars are not bloodless, and they are rarely isolated, ” Equity says. “Escalating rhetoric can quickly lead to unsafe conditions. Right now, the harm in Tennessee is focused on both personal and performance-based gender identity. We will not tolerate gender-based threats or violence. ”Equity is encouraging drag artists and transgender, nonbinary or gender nonconforming actors and stage managers who feel at risk to contact their union reps immediately. In addition, the union asks theater employers seeking “carveouts” to the law for their own productions to instead join efforts to reject the law entirely.“We will not stand quietly by while our traditions or our work – in shows like Peter Pan, Hairspray, Chicago, Rent, Angels in America and too many more to name – are reclassified as obscenity by ridiculous politicians, ” the statement reads. Read the entire statement below:Equity stands ready to protect our members in Tennessee and beyond, should anyone try to enforce unjust laws against them. If you are a drag artist, or if you are a transgender, nonbinary or gender nonconforming actor or stage manager working in a context you feel puts you at risk, please contact your business rep (or, after hours, the emergency hotline) immediately. Our staff is currently doing outreach to Equity theatres across the state, and working closely with our Broadway League colleagues to ensure the safety of our members on tours that stop in Tennessee. We’re aware that some theatrical employers may be advocating for carveouts to the law; we urge them instead to join us in rejecting it entirely and lobbying for its elimination. Her family said it wasn’t clear how urgent her medical needs had grown during last month’s record-setting snowstorms. She “needed medical attention in the midst of the storm, and we could not get that to her, ” Hake said. Her family called for an emergency wellness check Monday.“We were too late, ” she said. Deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office found Hake dead just after 9 a. m. Monday, according to agency spokesperson Mara Rodriguez. A cause of death has not been determined, but Rodriguez said there were no signs of trauma or suspicious circumstances. Hake, who requested that her adult sister not be identified, declined to expound on her sister’s medical history or what may have led to her death. But she said she has no doubt that her sister would have gotten the care she needed had the storms not trapped her inside, cutting her off from help.“We were trying to get someone to go check on her, ” Hake said. “There was literally no access to get to her; she lives alone. And for so many that are [stuck] in their homes, that is their story. ”At least two other people in San Bernardino’s mountain communities have also been found dead through welfare checks since Feb. 23, when the historic snowstorms first started, Rodriguez said. Another was found dead in Big Bear and the third in Valley of Enchantment, a neighborhood in Crestline. Rodriguez didn’t have additional details on the other deaths, and all are awaiting autopsies. However, as of Wednesday, she said none of the three was considered storm-related. She did not immediately respond to questions about how that designation is determined. Hake said many worry there may be more casualties yet to be discovered, as people continue to dig out from the snow.“The level of loss and just the magnitude of the storm... I just cannot convey enough just how devastating” it has been, Hake said. For nearly two weeks, many living in mountain communities from Crestline to Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear have been trapped under massive amounts of snow — more than 100 inches in some places — while officials have struggled to clear roadways and provide relief after back-to-back storms pummeled the region with blizzard conditions and relentless snowfall. Residents were without power for days, roofs and decks collapsed, gas leaks spurred storm-related fires and entire neighborhoods struggled to get supplies of food and gas. As of Wednesday morning, about 95% of San Bernardino County roads have been cleared, officials said, but they noted that many of those roadways are still only wide enough to accommodate single-lane traffic. Almost 30 miles of roads still have not been plowed. Hake and her family were without power in their Crestline home for at least five days, she said, eventually relocating to a friend’s house to wait for the power to be restored and roads to clear.

It is the fourth longest win streak in franchise history. It is not only the longest streak in the league this season, but also the most consecutive victories in the NBA since Phoenix peeled off 18 straight last season. The Bucks are now 44-17 and the Nets dropped to 34-27. Five Bucks reached double figures in scoring and they dominated in the paint, outscoring Brooklyn 62-44 in that area. Giannis Antetokounmpo returns to full speedIt seems strange, but the Bucks’ MVP candidate had not played a full game since Feb. 14, an overtime victory against Boston. He left his last two regular season games early with injuries, first with a sprained right wrist (Feb. 16 at Chicago) and a bruised right quadriceps (Feb. 24 vs. Miami). Antetokounmpo looked fresh in the early going, throwing down three massive dunks to get the road crowd cheering for him. BOX SCORE: Bucks 118, Nets 104But there was some rust, too. Three of the Bucks’ 12 first half turnovers were on passes to him from Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton that missed their mark. Antetokounmpo turned it over twice on his own, too, and the Nets scored 16 points off the takeaways. Antetokounmpo scored 12 points in the third quarter to help the Bucks get back into it, and then he put the punctuation mark on his performance with four early points in the fourth to increase the Bucks’ margin and help them start to pull away. He finished with 33 points on 15-of-27 shooting (but just 2 for 6 from the free throw line) along with 15 rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes. Because of the timing of the injuries, he had not directly spoken about his concern over his right wrist (he spoke briefly at the all-star game on Feb. 20 but went for additional testing on Feb. 21 where it was determined no significant damage was done). Rather unusually, he pulled himself out of the game against the Heat after the team said he knocked knees with an opponent. Though it was later described as a quad bruise, he had also hit his right knee against an opponent in the Celtics game. Antetokounmpo had been dealing with soreness in that knee since Jan. 27. New-look Nets push the BucksThere was a different feel for the game than previous iterations of the Bucks-Nets rivalry, largely because Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were no longer headlining for the home team. With the two stars dealt away, the Nets instead relied on a group effort of starting players ranging from 6 feet, 5 inches to 6-11. Brooklyn head coach Jacque Vaughn elected to lean on his five starters, as all played at least 29 minutes. And, for the majority of the game, it worked. Despite the height mismatch inside against Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis, the Nets were active defensively in forcing turnovers and weren’t afraid to get in and draw foul.

Four years ago, Ms. Lightfoot made history as the first Black woman to be elected mayor of Chicago when she swept all 50 of the city’s wards. But she saw her popularity plunge during the coronavirus pandemic as Chicago suffered a spike in violent crime, with looting and destruction on its famed Magnificent Mile in 2020. The two candidates to emerge from Tuesday’s first round of voting — Paul Vallas, a former public schools executive, and Brandon Johnson, a county board commissioner — will advance to a runoff election on April 4. The race showcased the political divide that has emerged in some of America’s largest, most liberal cities, where hard-on-crime policies have increasingly resonated with voters. The contest for mayor is now narrowed to two candidates with starkly different views on policing and education. Mr. Vallas has portrayed Chicago as being in a state of turmoil under Ms. Lightfoot’s leadership. With an endorsement from the local Fraternal Order of Police, he has run an aggressive campaign arguing that he can make the city safer, calling for bolstering the police force, improving arrest rates for serious crimes and expanding charter schools.“The city clearly is in crisis and people want a crisis manager who can come in and focus on getting things done, ” Mr. Vallas said after casting his ballot in an elementary school gym on the South Side on Tuesday. Mr. Johnson, 46, a former educator who was endorsed by the Chicago Teachers Union, staked out a position to the left of Ms. Lightfoot, at one point suggesting that he agreed with the movement to reduce funding to police departments, though he later backtracked. At a polling place on Tuesday, Serena Mascio, 40, said she moved to Chicago from the suburbs in 2017 and was voting for mayor in the city for the first time.“I’m voting for Brandon Johnson because instead of more police, he’s focused on more mental health needs, ” she said. “He brings a different perspective. ”Ms. Lightfoot, whose victory four years ago also made her the first openly gay person to lead Chicago, was challenged on the campaign trail by residents unimpressed with her handling of crime, an issue that loomed above all others in the campaign. Mr. Johnson, who was one of seven Black candidates, won over many political progressives, while Mr. Vallas consolidated support in more conservative neighborhoods. Vallas was the only white candidate in the race; Chicago has roughly equal numbers of Black, white and Hispanic residents. In the days leading up the election, Ms. Lightfoot remained hopeful that she would secure a spot in the runoff, despite a clear loss in support.

In return, the Rangers are sending two draft picks to Chicago -- a 2023 second-round pick, which carries conditions to improve to a first-round selection, as well as a 2025 fourth-round pick. The 2023 second-round pick will become a first-rounder if the Rangers make the Eastern Conference finals. However, that first-round pick would be in 2024 or 2025. At 5 p. m. ET, New York finally accrued the appropriate amount of cap space to fit in Kane's contract. Chicago will retain 50% of Kane's $10. 5 million contract, and the Arizona Coyotes signed on to take on 50% of that, meaning Kane will count for only $2. 625 million against the Rangers' cap. Arizona will get a 2025 third-round pick from the Rangers for facilitating the deal."I'm so thankful for everything the city, the Blackhawks organization, my teammates and the fans have done for me and my family over the last 16 years -- the support was constant from day one and Chicago will forever be home for us, " Kane said in a statement released by the Blackhawks. "This has been an emotional time for me and my family, but I feel this decision puts me in the best spot to immediately win another Stanley Cup."This isn't about me leaving the Blackhawks, but this is an opportunity for me -- the Blackhawks did everything they could to put me in a great position and I will forever be grateful. It is bittersweet to leave a place that is so special to me, but I will always carry the memories we made in Chicago. "Kane is expected to travel to the East Coast on Tuesday and could debut for the Rangers as soon as Wednesday in Philadelphia. Kane, a three-time Stanley Cup champion who was picked No. 1 by the Blackhawks in 2007, is in the final year of an eight-year deal that carried a no-movement clause. The 34-year-old winger forced Chicago's hand to go to his preferred destination, which significantly lowered the potential return for the Blackhawks. Sources close to Kane said he has been emotional about the move, as he always envisioned himself retiring as a Blackhawks player. Dealing away Kane represents Chicago's official turn away from its championship era as it rebuilds through the draft with a new management team and coaching staff in place. The Rangers initially wanted to add only one high-end winger at the trade deadline, according to multiple sources, and they chose Vladimir Tarasenko of the Blues over Kane earlier this month."It's not, like, the happiest I've been to hear about a trade, " Kane told reporters shortly after. According to sources, multiple teams tried to pursue Kane -- including the Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers -- however, the winger pushed behind the scenes to still go to the Rangers. Kane has been receiving treatment for a hip injury this year, which is one of the reasons the Rangers initially hit pause on acquiring the veteran, sources told ESPN.

Related: ‘Dilbert’s’ Scott Adams: ‘White people should get the hell away from Black people’Newspaper readers around the country were greeted by notes from publishers — and, in at least one instance, a blank space — alerting them to outlets’ decision to stop running the popular comic. Adams’ fate was effectively sealed Sunday evening when “Dilbert” distributor Andrews McMeel Universal said it was severing ties to the cartoonist. By Monday morning, “Dilbert” was gone from the GoComics site, which also features many top comic strips like “Peanuts” and “Calvin and Hobbes. ”In a Feb. 22 episode of his YouTube show, Adams described people who are Black as members of “a hate group” from which white people should “get away. ” Various media publishers across the U. S. denounced the comments as racist, hateful and discriminatory while saying they would no longer provide a platform for his work. Readers of The Sun Chronicle in Attleboro, Massachusetts, found a blank space in Monday’s edition where “Dilbert” would normally run. The paper said it would keep the space blank throughout March “as a reminder of the racism the pervades our society. ”Newspapers ranging from the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post to smaller papers like the the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette have also said they would cease to publish “Dilbert. ” The strip, which lampoons office culture, first appeared in 1989.“This is a decision based on the principles of this news organization and the community we serve, ” Cleveland Plain Dealer Editor Chris Quinn wrote. ”We are not a home for those who espouse racism. We certainly do not want to provide them with financial support. ”The Andrews McMeel Universal statement said the distributor supports free speech, but Adams’ comments were not compatible with the core values of the company based in Kansas City, Missouri.“We are proud to promote and share many different voices and perspectives. Tuesday, Feb. 28. For some, it would be the first time home in days. RELATED: Escorts up Highways 18, 330 begin for San Bernardino Mountains residents“They’re not letting anyone up, ” said Stephanie Powers, a resident of Running Springs, who was waiting early Tuesday afternoon to make it up the hill to home. “Not residents, or anyone. ”Many mountain residents were waiting — along Waterman Avenue or along Highland Avenue in San Bernardino — for their opportunity to head home, to see the snow that has kept them away and caused havoc in the communities they call home. San Bernardino County declared a local emergency late Monday to obtain state and local help in clearing snow from neighborhood streets and mountain highways — many closed since Friday. Caltrans announced late Tuesday morning that escorts would be in place for upbound residents of the communities inundated with snow. Recent storms have brought more than 7 feet to some areas. For now, the escorts will be from 5 to 9 a. and from 5 to 9 p. on Highway 18 at 48th Street in San Bernardino and Highway 330 at Highland Avenue. Powers and her family had been out of town and then returned to have to stay in a hotel, but they checked out this morning, she said, and as of now, they have no place to go.“They’ll allow us up at 5 when it’s snowing again, ” Justin Franco said questioningly. He also said he had concerns as residents are being left in the lurch, since they’re letting people down the mountain, but not up. Another storm is moving into the area and expected to bring another round of heavy snow to lower elevations and chilly, cold temperatures. But forecasters say this one shouldn’t bring as much chaos. Roy French, who’s lived in Running Springs for 20 years, said he’s never seen closures like this. “There hasn’t been a blizzard this bad since ’69 and ’89, ” he said. This is a developing story. Manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that Lux is "obviously crushed" and that the injury is "a huge blow" to the Dodgers, who were anticipating that the former top prospect would be their starting shortstop this season. Roberts told reporters that Lux also suffered damage to his LCL and will undergo surgery March 7. Veteran Miguel Rojas is expected to handle the bulk of the playing time at shortstop, according to Roberts, who also mentioned Chris Taylor as a potential candidate at the position. Rojas said earlier Tuesday that is prepared to handle a larger role for the Dodgers but he feels bad for Lux, who had been "working his ass off to get ready for the season to be the everyday shortstop for this team. ""He's a big part of this club, " Rojas told reporters. "I just feel bad for him that he has to go through whatever he's going to have to go through. "Lux tweeted Tuesday that he appreciates the outpouring of support he's received since the injury. Lux was carted off the field Monday after suffering the injury while running the bases during Los Angeles' spring training game against the San Diego Padres at Arizona's Peoria Stadium. As he altered his path to avoid a throw while running from second base to third, Lux's right knee appeared to buckle, and he stumbled to the ground. He could be seen clutching the knee in pain. Roberts said after the game that Lux "heard something pop" on the outer part of his knee. Lux, 25, is in his fifth year with the Dodgers after being drafted by Los Angeles in 2016. He played a career-high 129 games last season, batting a career-best. 276 while leading the National League with seven triples and adding six home runs and 42 RBIs.

UTA Fashion, which will be led by fashion industry vet Anne Nelson, will focus on expanding client activities in the fashion and beauty sectors. Nelson has held exec posts at IMG, Elite Model Management and, more recently, CAA. She has served as a mentor to many models on the rise, helping to guide their career paths.“Anne is one of the most respected fashion executives with deep and established relationships across the industry, ” UTA Board member and Partner Blair Kohan and Partner Darnell Strom said in a joint statement. “She has a true passion for her clients and has been the architect behind many top career moments in the fashion world. For UTA, bringing her on board is a natural next step in the work we’ve been doing in this space, and we can’t wait to see what she will accomplish. ”The fashion industry, which is worth upwards of $2 trillion globally, is in the midst of a dramatic shift away from longtime economic models. It has also been increasingly cross-pollinating with the entertainment business. One recent example was the appointment of rapper and producer Pharrell Williams to oversee menswear design for French luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton. UTA’s latest move follows the acquisitions of publishing agency Fletcher and Company, top UK talent and literary agency Curtis Brown Group, and entertainment and marketing advisory firm MediaLink. UTA also received backing last July from private equity firm EQT.

Sizemore’s manager, Charles Lago, released a statement confirming Sizemore’s condition: “Today, doctors informed his family that there is no further hope and have recommended end of life decision. The family is now deciding end of life matters and a further statement will be issued on Wednesday.”On February 18, Sizemore collapsed at home and was subsequently hospitalized. Doctors determined that Sizemore suffered a brain aneurysm as the result of a stroke. The 61-year-old actor has been in critical condition ever since, and is currently “in a coma and in intensive care” per Lago’s statement. Sizemore made a career in Hollywood out of playing tough guys, appearing in a number of hit crime and war movies in the ’90s and early 2000s like Heat, Natural Born Killers, Pearl Harbor, and Black Hawk Down. His big break came in 1998 when he starred as Technical Sergeant Mike Horvath in the World War II movie Saving Private Ryan, opposite Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. Sizemore earned a SAG nomination for best ensemble for Saving Private Ryan, and the film went on to be nominated for the Academy Award for best picture. In 2000, Sizemore scored a Golden Globe nomination for best performance by an actor in a miniseries or motion picture made for television for his work in Witness Protection. Sizemore has struggled with drug addiction, and has had multiple run-ins with the law. In 2003, he was convicted on domestic violence charges after physically abusing and harassing his then girlfriend, Heidi Fleiss. Following the conviction, he served six months in jail. In 2007 he was arrested for suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and was later sentenced to 16 months in prison. In 2010, Sizemore revealed to Larry King that he had been addicted to cocaine, heroin and meth, and in that same year appeared on Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew. Sizemore’s legal and drug-related problems extended into the late 2010s. In 2017, Sizemore pleaded no contest to two charges of domestic violence after getting arrested on suspicion of assaulting his partner. He received 36 months of summary probation. That same year, it was revealed that Sizemore had been removed from a movie set in 2003 after allegedly touching an 11-year old-actress on the genitals. (Sizemore declined to address the situation at the time. “Our position is ‘no comment,'” said his agent, Stephen Rice. According to THR, he later tweeted in response to a Twitter user who brought up the allegation, “It didn’t happen, bro.”) Most recently, Sizemore was arrested for possession of “various illegal narcotics” in 2019. According to TMZ, as part of a plea deal, the actor entered a pretrial drug diversion program as well as a drug prevention program.
#TomSizemore #newsyearsday #kingworldnews #newstoday #newstodaybbc #newstodayabc #Black and Latino homeless people rank lower on L.A.’s housing priorityWorldwide News2023-02-28 | For most of the last four years, Chantel Jones lived in a homeless shelter on Los Angeles’ skid row, hating the danger, noise and confinement: “You feel like you’re in jail, but you’re not in jail, ” she recalled. Like tens of thousands of other people dealing with homelessness in Los Angeles, Jones, who is Black, entered the housing system through an intake survey administered by a case manager. She was asked several intensely personal questions about her history, such as whether she used drugs or talked to the police after witnessing a crime. Her responses, solicited to measure her “vulnerability, ” were scored, added up and used to help determine whether Jones would qualify for subsidized permanent housing. This scoring system is called the Vulnerability Index-Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool, or VI-SPDAT. When Jones discovered that she had scored too low to get placed in housing, she said she kept asking the case manager for an explanation. “He didn’t know, ” she said. An investigation by the nonprofit newsroom the Markup has found that Jones’ case fits a pattern. An analysis of more than 130, 000 VI-SPDAT surveys taken in the Los Angeles area as far back as 2016 found that white people received scores considered “high acuity” — or most in need — more often than Black people, and that gap persisted year over year. The disparity is particularly stark among those who took a variation of the survey designed for people under 25. In 2021, 67% of unhoused white young adults scored enough to be in the highest-priority group, compared with 56% of Latino young adults and 46% of Black young adults. Among people 25 and older, smaller but similarly persistent disparities favored white adults. In 2021, 39% of white adults were placed in the highest-vulnerability group compared with 33% of Black adults and 35% of Latino adults. Longtime observers of Los Angeles’ approach to homelessness say scoring disparities in the system are alarming and may mean unhoused Black people are getting less help than they should. The findings come at a time when the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), the independent, joint city and county agency responsible for coordinating homelessness services in L. A., plans to stop using the tool after a research team partnering with the agency found the tool had “the potential to advantage certain racial groups over others. ”But with no replacement yet available, the agency continues to rely on it. Despite their lower vulnerability scores, Black people were, according to a 2018 LAHSA report, slightly overrepresented among those in LAHSA’s permanent housing programs, compared to the proportion of Black people experiencing homelessness. (The opposite was true for Latino people, who were slightly underrepresented.

And the usually reticent sides issued a rare joint statement late last week that said talks are continuing — but didn’t add much else.“The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) announced that they continue to negotiate, ” the joint statement said, “and remain hopeful of reaching a deal soon. ”Both sides have stuck closely to an agreement made when talks began to remain mum on how the negotiations were progressing and what was being discussed. A snag was reportedly hit in October over a jurisdictional dispute at a terminal in the Port of Seattle that temporarily stalled talks. A Feb 10 article in the Journal of Commerce, a trade publication, said negotiations only resumed that week after parties agreed to temporarily set aside the controversial jurisdictional issue that “has kept talks at a standstill for nine months. ”The journal, citing several anonymous sources “close to the negotiations, ” reported that the resumed negotiations focused on terminal automation, health and safety, and wages, “issues that have received little attention since the coastwise contract negotiations began last May 10. ”But officially, neither the ILWU or PMA, the two negotiating parties, are commenting on the process, abiding by the silence agreement signed before talks began.“We don’t have any additional info or comment beyond what’s in the joint release, ” ILWU spokesperson Jennifer Sargent Bokaie said in a Friday, Feb. 24, email. A PMA spokesperson, likewise, said, that organization had nothing to add beyond the Thursday, Feb. 23, joint statement. Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka, for his part, said during his monthly news briefing last week that he thinks an agreement may come in March or this spring — though he stressed he had no specific knowledge on the matter. Following the record cargo volumes that lasted for 25 months, traffic — and business overall — has dropped considerably at the ports of LA and Long Beach. That’s partily because of a shift to send more cargo through the Gulf and East Coast ports amid wariness that the longer-than-expected talks could spell trouble and, with it, work disruption in the San Pedro Bay Complex. But both parties have signed — and have so far abided by — agreements in which they pledged no slowdowns, lockouts or strikes during the collective bargaining talks, Seroka said.“There have been no disruptions to date, ” Seroka said. But the drop-off in cargo since the pandemic surge subsided, coupled with skittish importers looking for alternative ports, has impacted workers at terminals that, Seroka said, now operate only at 75% capacity. That means fewer shifts for longshore workers who have families to support and bills to pay. Seroka, who said he’s crisscrossing the nation to get business to return to POLA.

The stock jumped nearly 6% and was holding on to a gain of 4.6% at 11:10 a.m. ET Monday morning. So whatInvestors are excited to hear what the company says on Wednesday regarding new innovations and products including potential updates on robotic taxis and a lower priced mass-market vehicle. But it might be what's happening outside its home U. S. market that has the stock surging today. Now whatThe Chinese and European markets are the global leaders for electric vehicle (EV) sales, and good news for Tesla came out of both today. Tesla continues to ramp up its German manufacturing plant, and it is now producing 4,000 units per week ahead of schedule, reports Reuters. In China, EV maker Li Auto reported its most recent update for investors, and its promising outlook for the coming months is good news for Tesla too. Image source: Tesla. Li delivered just over 15,000 of its electric cars in January, but it projected first-quarter deliveries totaling between 52,000 and 55,000. That implies an average of about 19,000 per month for February and March. That volume approaches Li's monthly record, which it set in December 2021. Sales from most EV makers in China struggled last year from production and consumer impacts related to COVID-19 lockdowns. It's great news for Tesla's Chinese sales if that damage is finally in the rearview mirror. Tesla's plant in Shanghai, China, is its highest-volume facility. It has also used that factory to supply European customers. The news that Tesla's German factory is several weeks ahead of schedule with its production ramp-up means the company is more likely to hit its 50% annual growth target for deliveries. Tesla investors are buying the stock today based on that news as well as the potential updates the company will provide on Wednesday. Howard Smith has positions in Tesla. The Motley Fool has positions in and recommends Tesla. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

With the win, New York moved into the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and kicked off an important stretch of games against some heavyweight teams like Boston again this weekend and the Miami Heat on Friday. The Knicks also extended their win streak to six against one of the most, if not the most, formidable teams in the NBA. The Celtics were coming off an electric victory against the Philadelphia 76ers and had been looking to keep the good vibes going against a surging New York squad. New York needed to start the game off with staunch defense, and that they did to start the first quarter. They were doing a good job of getting through screens set by Boston center Robert Williams III, and Mitchell Robinson was winning most rebounds in the paint. It also did not hurt that Julius Randle was once again hot from three-point range to begin the contest. But, it was a cold shooting sequence for the first half of the period with neither team getting much momentum on offense. As the quarter wound down, Robinson was particularly on point on defense with a big block on Jayson Tatum and another steal off Tatum after that. Immanuel Quickley, Jalen Brunson and Randle started to thrive off of these plays, and helped New York get a solid lead over Boston as they entered the second quarter. The Knicks were rolling into the second and had to keep up the defensive intensity that they finished up the first with, but they were quickly plagued with two rough possessions in a row. That negative energy faded quickly, although the Celtics’ bench was doing some damage to the Knicks’ second unit. Josh Hart and Quickley, however, were able to act as the glue holding the bench together and helped to maintain New York’s lead. Once Brunson came back on the floor, the lead continued to balloon. But, thanks to both Boston tightening up on defense and the Celtics getting anything they wanted in the paint, they managed to crawl back to within ten with about two minutes to go in the period. Thanks to a quick flurry from a formerly silent RJ Barrett to close the half out, though, the Knicks were able to hold onto a 16-point lead to finish up the first half. The third opened up with some questionable shooting from the Knicks while the Celtics were finally piecing it together from three-point range. Just when Boston looked to be getting some momentum back, Quentin Grimes had a few big plays on defense to help New York get some points in transition. He was rewarded with his first points of the night, a three-ball, with just over seven minutes left in the period. Even with the Knicks’ defense looking worse for wear, they were able to maintain some steadiness on offense to disallow any major lead change. After another solid closeout to the quarter from New York and their bench, they led 88-75 entering the fourth quarter.

Vira Krasiuk and her family had come to Lake Arrowhead from Aliso Viejo on Friday for a short trip, only planning to stay until Saturday. The family, which included three adults and three kids, remained trapped at their rental home and were running low on supplies and unable to make the drive to the nearest grocery store. On Monday, two family members walked about two hours down to the nearest gas station to get water, dry noodles and other necessities. Originally from Ukraine, Krasiuk said she had never experienced a winter storm like this even when back home.“We called the fire department and asked about when we could leave and they said all roads are closed, ” Krasiuk said. “We cannot get out. ”Hard road closures remained on Monday with no access to anyone other than emergency services while Caltrans staff continued working to clear the snow on highways 18, 138, 189, 173, 330 and 38, according to Caltrans spokesperson Carolina Rojas.“Staff continues to work around the clock making great progress considering the circumstances that we were faced with, ” Rojas said. Many long-time residents prepared and stocked up ahead of the storm but did not anticipate the road closures continuing through Monday. Caltrans officials said trucks hauling groceries and other supplies made the trip up Highway 18 over the weekend to Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake, and were coordinating additional efforts with local agencies for fuel, groceries, medical and other essential needs in all mountain communities — but some residents said their stores were still dwindling on supplies. Robin Unwin-Bassett, who has lived in Twin Peaks for three years, said her family made a run to the store last week, stocking up on all the essentials. With two teens and an infant, she said she told her kids to run wild and grab any snacks they wanted knowing they would be stuck indoors for days to come. Unwin-Bassett’s one concern was her supply of milk, which she was conserving for her one-year-old son. She said the road outside her home on Monday was still covered in several feet of snow. A snow plow had come through the neighborhood earlier to clear the roads, but with so much snow continuing to fall, the efforts were in vain.“I felt bad for the guy because there’s just nowhere to even push it all, ” Unwin-Bassett said. “My husband was out there for hours shoveling, a neighbor with his own plowing tools was trying to clear the road, but it just keeps falling. ”“And we’re expecting at least two to three more days of snow, ” she said. Arthur Lev has lived in Crestline for the last two years and said he was running low on supplies for himself and his two cats.

Two people in their 60s who received the shot were diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, out of about 20, 000 vaccine recipients who participated in Pfizer’s Phase 3 clinical trial, according to the FDA document. One person’s illness had completely resolved after three months, while the other continues to show signs of improvement six months later. There were no cases in the trial’s placebo group or among those who did not receive the shot. Guillain-Barre syndrome, or inflammatory neuropathy, is a disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves. Symptoms can range from bursts of weakness to paralysis, according to the National Institutes of Health. It causes anywhere from 6, 000 to 10, 000 deaths a year among seniors, though mortality rates tend to vary from season to season. However, most people recover, even from the most severe cases.“Given the temporal association and biological plausibility, FDA agrees with the assessments of the investigators that these events were possibly related to [the] study vaccine, ” said the FDA. “Therefore, [Guillain-Barre] is being considered an important potential risk. ”Pfizer, in its briefing document, said the cases have other possible explanations, adding that its shot is a “well-tolerated and safe vaccine, with a benefit-to-risk ratio that is favorable. ” The New York-based pharmaceutical company also agreed to conduct a safety study to further assess potential risks of Guillain-Barre syndrome should the vaccine be approved. The FDA documents were released ahead of a meeting next week of its independent vaccine advisers, the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee. On Tuesday, they will vote on whether Pfizer’s efficacy and safety data warrants an FDA approval. Pfizer’s vaccine was 85% effective at preventing the lower respiratory tract illness for which it was designed. So far, no approved RSV vaccine exists.

The owners of the lot formerly known as CBS Studio Center submitted plans to Los Angeles officials Friday to revamp and enlarge the aging studio and broadcasting complex, adding as much as 1 million square feet of new soundstages, production facilities and offices. Founded by movie comedy legend Mack Sennett in 1928, the lot became known as “Hit City” in the decades after World War II as popular TV shows such as “Leave It to Beaver, ” “Gilligan’s Island, ” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show, ” “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Will & Grace” were made there. Current shows include “Big Brother 24” and “Physical. ”“It’s got this mystique that if you come there you’re going to make it, ” said studio President Mike Klausman, who has worked on the property since he started there as a CBS page in 1971. The Radford complex was the very studio lot that gave rise to the name Studio City. It’s had numerous incarnations, including decades as Republic Studios, home to such screen legends as Roy Rogers, John Wayne and Joan Crawford. Among Republic’s popular movies were “The Quiet Man, ” “Sands of Iwo Jima” and “Johnny Guitar. ”The current state of the 55-acre studio is less glamorous than its heritage would suggest, having evolved like an old city where new additions, often built on a tight budget, were layered over and around existing structures.“There was never really a master plan, ” Klausman said. “You would never tear down anything, just add on. We had to work around what was there. ”Bungalows for writers and stars — often quaint structures from Hollywood’s Golden Age on other historic movie lots — are clusters of mobile homes delivered in the 1990s when times were lean, he said. The vast roofs of soundstages used to drain rainwater directly onto the asphalt roads below.“You almost needed a boat to get from one studio to another, ” Klausman said. “It was like a river in that place. ”The drainage issue has been fixed, and times are no longer lean as the rise of streaming has escalated demand for soundstages and other production facilities and prompted the development of new studios in the Los Angeles region. Radford and other studios are booked year-round. Though it is outwardly unassuming with its main entrance tucked around a corner from Ventura Boulevard on Radford Avenue, the Radford studio is among the most valuable in the world based on price. It sold in 2021 for $1. 85 billion to Hackman Capital Partners, one of the largest providers of entertainment production facilities, and New York real estate investor Square Mile Capital Management.

The deal is expected to be official soon. The franchise cornerstone of an ascendant franchise, Machado is coming off arguably the best season of his career, hitting. 298/. 366/. 531 with 32 home runs and 102 RBIs. He finished second in National League MVP voting and led the Padres to the National League Championship Series, where they were ousted by the Philadelphia Phillies. Machado's arrival in San Diego in 2019 on a 10-year, $300 million deal signaled a new era for the Padres, who have yet to win a World Series in their 54-year history. Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. joined the Padres as a rookie during Machado's first season in San Diego, and while the team struggled to a 70-92 finish, it thrived in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, got a significant boost with the acquisition of star outfielder Juan Soto last year and continued to spend this winter with the signing of shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an 11-year, $280 million contract. San Diego currently carries the third-highest competitive balance tax payroll in Major League Baseball at more than $266 million, according to Baseball Prospectus. With more than $600 million owed to Tatis and Bogaerts, nine-figure extensions for right-handers Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove, and Soto's impending free agency after the 2024 season, the question of whether the Padres would retain Machado was among the most prominent in baseball this spring. As recently as last week, it sounded unlikely. The Padres, sources told ESPN's Alden Gonzalez, had offered Machado a five-year, $105 million extension on top of the six years and $180 million he's owed, including this season. Machado was seeking significantly more than the $25. 45 million a year Bogaerts received and said he planned to opt out."Markets change, " Machado said. Baseball's certainly had since 2019, when Machado signed with the Padres following a long winter in which he and Bryce Harper, the other available star, didn't sign their megadeals until late February. San Diego has since turned into a powerhouse, and it hopes to catch the Los Angeles Dodgers for NL West supremacy this year after beating them in the division series in 2022. In four seasons with the Padres, Machado has hit 108 home runs and driven in 340 runs while hitting. 280/. 352/. 504 and winning a pair of Gold Gloves at third base.

A. schools Supt. Alberto Carvalho wanted to extend the academic year, the teachers union stopped him. When his predecessor, Austin Beutner, wanted more live Zoom teaching during the pandemic, the union also stopped him. And when the district was preparing to reopen campuses for in-person learning, the union demanded that teachers first have the opportunity to be fully immunized against COVID-19. When it comes to local schools, United Teachers Los Angeles wields significant influence. This week its members are deciding who will wield power within the union in an election sure to affect public education at a critical moment for students’ academic recovery from the pandemic. The 35, 000-member union of teachers, counselors, librarians and nurses is likely to have a say in any renewed efforts to extend the school year or school day, which affects working hours. Union leaders also will bargain over how and where to lower class sizes and weigh in on whether to shorten winter break from three weeks to two weeks. There’s also been a decades-long push and pull over who controls what happens at schools as far as teacher assignments, hiring and spending. The coming months feel critical for teachers, who, like their students, have struggled to get back to normal as the pandemic has eased. The stress of catching up children who are behind academically and acting out emotionally has prompted many to retire, leave the profession or consider doing so. High inflation and housing prices make it difficult to live in Los Angeles on a teacher’s salary. The union’s sweeping list of bargaining priorities takes on such areas as funding for the Black Student Achievement Program, specifics on organizing the district, building affordable housing for low-income families, environmental justice, healthy food, trauma-informed teaching, techniques for de-escalation of conflict and increased access to ethnic studies. The union bloc in place for nearly a decade is vying to extend its run — and has emerged as the heavy favorite in online, members balloting. President Cecily Myart-Cruz, 49, seeks a second term with a recently assembled all-woman slate after taking over from coalition leader Alex Caputo-Pearl, who served as president for the maximum of two terms. Myart-Cruz has positioned the union as a progressive voice for underserved Black and Latino students; she’s also pushing for a 20% raise over two years in ongoing negotiations. In January 2019 teachers went on strike for six days and won some key concessions — such as a cap on class sizes — although the strike itself did not result in higher pay or better benefits. To avoid another strike, the union and school district must agree on wages that are generous enough to recruit and retain teachers as the district faces economic uncertainties. The union’s internal challenges include recruiting dues-paying members — now that the Supreme Court has barred mandatory membership in public employee unions. Close to 12.
