As a lifelong skier, Edwards had early access to some of the most world-class ski terrain in the world in his backyard in Palmer, Alaska. After a devastating accident in 2010, Ira was eventually able to return to skiing but found his life purpose shifting to philanthropy and fundraising for others.

Meet one of Alaskas longest Aurora Borealis Researchers | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2023-01-04 | Syun-Ichi Akasofu always had a curiosity for the aurora borealis. Yet, no one in his hometown in Japan knew exactly where these multi-colored shimmering lights in the evening sky came from.

One day at the library, he discovered an essay about auroras written by Sydney Chapman, but he found this paper complicated and mathematical. Akasofu wrote some questions to Chapman, and he replied by inviting Akasofu to study with him in Fairbanks, Alaska.

This journey led him to publish books, create tours, and establish one of the top scientific research centers in the world.

Indie Alaska 2022-10-13 | Michael George is a black, queer, nonbinary bartender in the tiny, historic town of McCarthy, Alaska. The town has less than 200 people during the busy summer months. Located in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, it's the last community to exist inside a U.S. national park. Michael's dealt with loneliness, microaggressions, and direct homophobic attacks, but has now grown to love McCarthy because of its vibrant art scene.

Meet the skateboarder behind some of Anchorages most famous wall art | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2022-09-01 | Since he was young, Ted Kim dedicated his life to skateboarding and making skateboarding movies - spending almost every day and night perfecting his craft. But at 25, a serious skateboarding injury left him feeling lost, and wondering if he would ever skate again. It was then he turned to art as a way of healing. From there, a new passion blossomed, inspiring him to work with murals. Using paint, pencils and even sharpie.

Arctic ultramarathons helped this suicide survivor find hope | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2022-05-25 | Carol Seppilu describes jogging with a tracheotomy as “trying to breathe through a straw while running.” She's even dealt with her trach freezing shut while running in the frigid winter temperatures in Nome, Alaska where she lives. She's learned to adapt to challenges like this since surviving a suicide attempt in 1999. Following years of reconstructive surgeries, she now uses her Siberian Yupik cultural values and her love for running long distances to keep herself mentally healthy.

Alaska cartoonist draws his experience with Parkinson’s | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2022-05-05 | Peter Dunlap-Shohl was living his lifelong dream, as an editorial cartoonist for the Anchorage Daily News. But in 2002, when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he asked himself: What else would he be losing besides his craft as an artist? His identity?

It wasn't over yet when he discovered the possibilities of computers, from drawing in color to animation. He soon realized he still had an outlet for expression.

This inspired Peter in 2015 to publish his book "My Degeneration", a graphic novel documenting his time with Parkinson's disease, hoping this book can be a tool for those who are just as scared as he was.

Crabbing beneath the Bering Sea Ice in Nome, Alaska | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2022-04-13 | Phillip Pryzmont hasn't been to a city in over 4 years. He spends his winters in Nome, Alaska cutting holes in the thick ice in the Norton Sound on the Bering Sea. I am an Indigenous Healer | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2022-03-10 | Amelia Simeonoff has been working in traditional healing most of her adult life after taking mentorship with one of Alaska's most prominent Indigenous healers, Grandma Rita. Now she is using the practices of talking circles, drumming, and crafting to help Alaskans heal from trauma, generational trauma, mental health challenges, and feelings of suicide.

Search and Rescue Airman learns to fly Alaskas smallest planes | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2021-11-17 | Staff Sergeant Jasmine Chavez is a Loadmaster in the Alaska Air National Guard stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska where she works with the 211th Rescue Squadron to perform Search and Rescue operations across the state. Years of riding in the back of C-130's and being around aircrew and flight operations helped her when she decided to pursue her private pilot certification at the University of Alaska Anchorage's Aviation Program. Now when she looks to the future she dreams of carrying people and cargo into Alaska's rural communities as a bush pilot and of flying U.S. Air Force jets as a commissioned officer. #bushpilot #veteransday #airforce

Inside an ambitious family farm in Delta Junction, Alaska | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2021-10-06 | Bryce Wrigley asked himself one question after seeing the news in 2005 of Hurricane Katrina, what if this happened in Alaska? He saw how Alaska relies on importing foods and if a natural disaster of that size were to happen, his own state would be in danger. The next question he asked was, what can I do? He turned to Barley, a grain known to be an alternative for those allergic to wheat as well as those with diabetes and heart disease.

His Daughter Has a Fatal Disease, Now He’s Taking Disabled Kids on Epic Adventures | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2021-08-25 | Dan Redfield and his wife Kristen Frederic were excited, first-time parents when they had their daughter, Ava. As a young couple with a love for the outdoors, they started taking their daughter on adventures. When Ava was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs, a rare, genetic, fatal disease, taking Ava outside became more challenging. As a professional filmmaker, Dan recognized the importance of his home videos and photos with his family. This inspired him to start a nonprofit called Adventure for Ava, where he takes Alaska families with disabled children on adventures and captures the photographs and videos of the day. #taysachs #adventureforava #disabilityawareness

Meet Pamyua, Alaskas most famous Inuit band | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2021-08-05 | Pamyua (bum-yo-ah) is a musical group that has gained worldwide recognition. Founded by Inuit Yup'ik African American brothers Phillip Kilirnguq Blanchett and Steven Qacungatarli Blanchett, the group produces music with traditional Yup’ik and African-American elements to create what they call "Inuit Soul." They are also the group behind the theme song for the @PBSKIDS show, @MollyofDenali. They hope to bring awareness to Alaska Native and Indigenous cultures by bringing their music and dancing to the mainstream media and around the world.

A Day in the Life of a Pianist in Alaskas Russian Community | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2021-07-14 | Russians have a long history in Alaska, with some Siberian migrant groups dating back as far as the early 1700s. The first European settlement in Alaska was in Kodiak in 1784 during the Russian fur trade. Eventually, #Russia officially sold #Alaska to the United States in 1867 but many Russians stayed and continued to grow. One notable member of the Russian Orthodox community in Anchorage is professional pianist, Margarita Merkusheva. Since moving to Alaska from Vladivostok 20 years ago, she's continued to advance her musical career by writing custom music for the Alaska Dance Theatre and giving #piano lessons to dozens of families in the Russian community.

Sheila Ezelle absolutely loves making custom kuspuks (Qaspeks) for the summer and parkys for the winter. Every parky that she makes she excitedly thinks to herself, “My - this is the best parky I have ever made!”

For the past 35 years, she has owned her grandmother’s business “Laura Wright’s Alaskan Parkys;” which was originally founded in 1947. Throughout time, the popularity of this traditional Alaska Native, multi-use, casual outfit has increased and has become a symbol of Alaskan identity.

Skiing Alaska’s extreme slopes with videographer Luka Bees | INDIE ALASKA

Over the years, Luke Bredar, also known by his Instagram handle as Luka Bees has been shooting and editing videos for social media of professional skiers all over Alaska, from the lesser known slopes of Hatcher Pass, to the primary ski and snowboard resort, #Alyeska.

Running the largest farm in rural Alaska | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2020-06-17 | Tim Meyers and his wife Lisa run Meyers Farm in Bethel, Alaska. What started as a small produce stand for local residents has now turned into a large-scale commercial farm, which allows Tim to ship #organic #produce #boxes to more than 50 villages in Alaska's YK Delta. Historically, these villages have had very little access to fresh and affordable fruits and vegetables. Their large, underground cellar allows them to store produce and continue shipping boxes even into the winter.

The unique earrings made from polar bear fur, walrus ivory and more | Indie Alaska

Indie Alaska 2020-06-03 | Josh Qagmuk Ahsoak, of JQA Designs, is an #Iñupiaq #artist from Utqiagvik living in #Anchorage, Alaska creating earrings and other fine art with traditional Iñupiat materials. Josh uses whale baleen, polar bear fur, dried flowers, walrus ivory and other traditional materials in his modern designs. These materials have been donated or traded from other artists and members of the community to make sure as much of the animal is used as possible.

This Aerial Silk Dancer Uses the Alaskan Wilderness as Her Stage | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2020-02-20 | Ten years have gone by since Aerialist, Stephany Jeffers fell in love with Aerial #Acrobatics at a workshop at the University of Alaska Anchorage. After a few years studying #Aerial in the lower 48, she returned to Alaska, but she found that there was no place to practice her #Silk.
What do you do when there is nowhere to hang and fly? With no audience watching and applauding you? You make a river bridge your Aerial rig and the Alaskan Wilderness your stage.

Meet the Cabbage Fairies of the Alaska State Fair | INDIE ALASKA

Gardening in the Arctic - How foods gone from mammoth to kale | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2020-01-23 | Frozen, windswept land, polar bears and caribou, glaciers and icebergs, are what comes to mind when thinking of the arctic. But in Anaktuvuk Pass, a small village on the northern edge of the Brooks Range above the Arctic Circle, one person is challenging that idea. Nasugraq Rainy Hopson founded Gardens in the Arctic, a gardening program that focuses on providing #food for the community.

The only permanent settlement of the #Alaska #Native Nunamiut, Anaktuvuk Pass relies on air shipments for produce, making it difficult to get fresh fruits and vegetables. Hopson hopes that over time, her gardening program will help create a sustainable community and lead to better health for her and her neighbors.

Sharing the Iñupiat art of making Mukluks | INDIE ALASKA

Indie Alaska 2019-08-28 | Mukluks are traditional boots worn by indigenous Arctic people around the world. Their successful design allows airflow, which prevents sweat from causing frostbite in extremely cold conditions. Mukluks (sometimes called moccasins) are very versatile though and can be worn to sneak up on seals while hunting, for traditional dances, and for formal occasions like weddings. The process of sewing mukluks has become less common in recent years, but Mary Lou Sours is working to change that and reconnect people to this cultural tradition. #indigenous #alaskanative #nativeart
