Buying a Vintage Geiger Counter ☢️ Project 326 2024-02-01 | This Chinese PLA, Type-75 is a 45 year old Geiger counter with a very radioactive check source. The check source is Strontium-90, a very dangerous substance. The main danger from this substance is if it is somehow ingested, as this will be taken up by the body in place of calcium. At the very least, gloves should be worn when handling the check source and it should only be removed from the storage container in the work area. Never disassemble the source holder. During experiments, I use a lead sheet to keep the source shielded when setting up and breaking down the experiments, so it is only exposed during the few seconds of the actual experiment. I also try to be never in the path of the beta radiation, standing to the side when the source is exposed.The actual radioactive material of the check source, appears to be contained in a foil. After all these years, that foil is still nice and shiny and does not show any signs of corrosion. This is probably due to two reasons, (i) the foil is made of something like stainless steel, and (ii) the waterproofing of the unit is very good and forms an airtight seal so it has seen reduced exposure to oxygen.Many thanks to @VEGA64TCGC for the valuable information that you supplied, datasheets, a white paper and numerous photographs.
