WETM 18 News 11/12/1999 Eric Samuelson 2025-09-28 | The late Carl Proper anchors from the NBC affiliate in Elmira, New York. Carl anchored this station for 40 years from 1966-2006 until he retired. After his retirement, he passed the torch to longtime 18 News veteran Jeff Stone. Carl lived in Elmira throughout his life and served in the Air Force. He died on October 6, 2012 at age 74.WETM-TV 18 Elmira was originally a satellite feed of WSTM Ch 3 Syracuse and the only broadcast from the Elmira counterpart was 18 News until Smith Television bought WETM in 1986 as they began 100% from Elmira. WETM was on cable in Binghamton from 1996-2000 as they created WBGH Binghamton on April 4, 1996 so Binghamton will watch NBC after WICZ-TV 40 switched to Fox. Since 2000, WBGH became part of WIVT Ch 34.

After he left our area, Matt went to West Palm Beach where he's a reporter on WPTV Ch 5 from 1993-96, then to KMOV Ch 4 St Louis from 1996-2018, and back to WPTV West Palm Beach since 2018. Matt began his career at WLIG-TV 55 Riverhead from 1985-88 and then our sister station WTAJ-TV 10 Altoona in 1988-89 before he came here to Binghamton. Dave Moulton was Action News sports anchor from 1991-93 until he was fired and was previously on WDAU/WYOU Ch 22 Scranton from 1985-90.

Anchor Steve Craig with meteorologist Erica Boyd with the weather and Rob Powers on sports. For those of you who lived in Cleveland for a long time you'll see a former WEWS reporter (Steve) with a current WEWS anchor (Rob). In this video, there's a promo for Jeopardy at 7:00 following Cheers at 7:30. Binghamton was a Wheel of Fortune desert during the 1992-93 season. After the 6 year contract with Wheel and Jeopardy on WBNG-TV 12 expired, only Jeopardy moved to this station but nobody aired Season 10 of Wheel. Wheel finally came to Ch 40 by September 6, 1993 airing at 7:30 right after Jeopardy.
WSTM Channel 3 News 4/3/1983 Eric Samuelson 2025-06-15 | The Sunday edition from the NBC affiliate in Syracuse, New York anchored by Vic Wright whose real name is Vic Vetters. Vic started here on this station from 1980-83. Then he began using his real name when he went to WNYT Ch 13 Albany from 1983-85. From 1985-90, he went to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton anchor WBRE-TV 28 Eyewitness News. Vic was co-anchor with Kathy Bozinski, then solo from 1986-87, and then Flora Pasterino became his co-anchor in 1987. Once Vic left WBRE, he gave the Eyewitness News anchor chair back to the late Keith Martin after 10 years at WGAL Ch 8 Lancaster. Vic returned to Albany as reporter on WTEN Ch 10 from 1990-94. Then he went to WKTV Ch 2 Utica beginning in 1994 as anchor & reporter and later became WKTV general manager. Today, Vic is now GM at NBC affiliate WJAR Ch 10 Providence.There's a promo for the premiere of The New Battlestars with Alex Trebek which didn't air on this station nor it's neighboring market WROC Ch 8 Rochester because both affiliates aired the news at noon. The only way for Central New York to see NBC game shows at 12 noon were on WKTV Ch 2 Utica or our station WICZ-TV 40 Binghamton. Also in the video is the second version of WSTM Just Watch Us Now.

Nancy Harrison was here on Ch 12 reporting from their Elmira Bureau from 1985-89. The Action News Elmira Bureau was on 111 North Main Street Downtown Elmira from February 1982 to December 1990. Jerry Giordano was here in Binghamton for 5 years and he worked with Jim Mathews on both stations. Jerry was here on Ch 12 Action News from March 1986 to December 1988 and then WICZ News Team 40 from January 1989 to April 1991. Jerry anchored News Team 40 at Noon from January 23 to August 18, 1989 and it flopped after 8 months. After he left Binghamton, he was anchor & reporter on WTEN Ch 10 Albany from 1991-93, WKBW Ch 7 Eyewitness News Buffalo from 1991-96, and a long run on KTUL Ch 8 Tulsa from 1996-2010. After he left broadcasting, he worked in real estate in Tulsa. Today, Jerry is now a rehab counselor in Arlington, Texas.

WBRE-TV 28 Commercials 1/1/1989 Eric Samuelson 2025-05-07 | From the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton affiliate on New Years Day during NBC Sunday Night at the Movies "Gremlins". In the commercials are a couple Eyewitness News teasers including the late Sid Michaels. In the Eyewitness News promo are Rick Mason, Jerry Baum, and a young Andy Mehalshick. Rick was an Eyewitness News Williamsport Bureau reporter from 1979-94. After he left broadcasting, he worked in Public Relations at PennDOT in Williamsport. Today, he runs Rick Mason Photography in Williamsport. His real name is Richard Matukonis. Gravely voice Jerry Baum was on Ch 28 from 1961-92 until he retired. Started as an Eyewitness News sports anchor before he became a news reporter in 1977. Jerry shared the newscast with anchor Frank D Coslett (retired in January 1980) and weatherman Joe Scott (he retired in 1978). Jerry died on February 10, 2023 at age 88. Andy is now on his 40th year on Ch 28 Eyewitness News along with fellow veteran Mark Hiller (both lifelong NEPAers).

When he first joined, this channel was WHEN-TV 8 before moving to Ch 5 since 1962 and became WTVH since 1976. His real last name was Ezzo and lived in Syracuse through his life. He died from cancer on November 29, 2001 at age 74, just a year after he signed off on December 1, 2000. In the WTVH-5 news special promo is Liz Ayres who anchored this station from 1986-2009. Stacey is married to anchor John Kosich. John & Stacey met in 1994 when they were reporters at WNEP News Watch 16 (Stacey was born & raised in Scranton). By the time John & Stacey became engaged, Stacey anchored on this station in 1996-97 and then WFMZ-TV 69 Allentown commuting from their Scranton home. After WNEP (John) & WFMZ (Stacey), Mr. & Mrs. Kosich went to Buffalo at WKBW Ch 7 Eyewitness News from 1999-2002. John & Stacey were at the same station their anchor Nolan Johannes were in the 1960s & 70s. The Kosichs are now in Cleveland where Stacey is on WJW Fox-8 and John is on WEWS Ch 5. John Leslie is well remembered for decades on WNBF radio.

WYOU-TV 22 Commercials 10/3/1987 Eric Samuelson 2025-04-03 | Commercial breaks during the movie "The Jazz Singer" from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre CBS affiliate. One of the News 22 promos has the late Derry Bird. Derry Bird is a Ch 22 legend who was anchorman, reporter, and weatherman from 1971-2000 until he retired. Derry died on December 9, 2022 at age 86. His last appearance was on the 50th anniversary of the Agnes Flood and the 2022 special showed archive film of Derry reporting from Kingston from the Agnes aftermath on WDAU in 1972. Contestants has 4 stories and the blank is the missing link and all 3 panelists has two chances to guess the correct missing link. First chance is worth $50 and second chance is $25. On NBC, it was hosted by Ed McMahon airing in color. It switched networks on March 30, 1964 with new host Dick Clark demoted to B&W. After Missing Links was canceled, Dick Clark didn't host a game show until The $10,000 Pyramid premiered in 1973. Milton Bradley released the Missing Links board game in 1964. This is one of two episodes exist in the Missing Links series (the other is the series finale from Christmas Day 1964).

In the WTVH-5 News bumpers is anchor Tracy Davidson who was an anchor & reporter at this station from 1985-96. She's now on WCAU Ch 10 Philadelphia since she left Central New York.

In this broadcast, Steve Craig was on vacation during the 4th of July week. 9 months later, this station here in Binghamton switched to Fox ever since ending their affiliation with NBC since the station began in November 1957. Rob Powers now anchors WEWS Ch 5 Cleveland where Steve Craig was a reporter in the 80s.The set seen here began couple months earlier replacing the previous set dating back to July 4, 1988. Sterner replaced Stephanie Thornton after 4 years as co-anchor and joined WNEP News Watch 16 where Steve Craig was previously a reporter from 1979-82.

In the News Team 40 promo with metrologist Sam Evans, that anchorwoman was Donna Crilley after the late Jim Mathews (best remembered on WBNG-TV 12 Action News) quit Ch 40 on February 2, 1990 after 2 years at the station (11 years here in the Binghamton market) as he moves to Arizona. Then Donna moved to WBRE-TV 28 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton where she had a 9 year run as reporter for Eyewitness News and Steve Craig became anchor of this station by April 1990 after 11 years away from Binghamton for the first time since his run at WBNG-TV 12 Action News from 1976-79.
WSTM Ch 3 Challenge Bowling 10/2/1982 Eric Samuelson 2025-02-27 | Popular Saturday morning staple on the NBC affiliate in Syracuse that ran from 1978-95. The bowling alley was at the basement of the station on 1030 James Street. The same bowling lane was also on the nightly Bowling for Dollars (1975-79). Dennis Bowman was the host seen here. He was on the station from 1978-84 as weatherman replacing Bud Hedinger (who moved to WIXT Ch 9). Dennis also hosted the STM Kids Club. Wherever Dennis went to in his career, he always have his dummy puppet Chester Drawers. Dennis was previously on WTVW Ch 7 Eyewitness News Evansville, Indiana from 1976-78. Since he left Syracuse, Dennis has been in Pittsburgh ever since. He went to WPXI Ch 11 and later KDKA Ch 2. Vic Wright seen here was the stage name of Vic Vetters. After 3 years at this station, he began using his real name when he went to WNYT Ch 13 Albany from 1983-85. From 1985-90, Vic anchored WBRE-TV 28 Eyewitness News Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Vic's co-anchors at WBRE were longtime veteran Kathy Bozinski, then solo from 1986-87, and Flora Pasterino joined Vic as co-anchor in 1987. After Vic ended his 5 year run in NEPA, he was replaced by the legendary Keith Martin after a 10 year absence. Vic returned to Albany as a reporter at WTEN Ch 10 Eyewitness News from 1990-94. Then Vic went to WKTV Ch 2 Utica as anchor of News Channel 2 and then he became the stations general manager. Vic is now the general manager at WJAR Ch 10 Providence. At last, we got to see the WSTM version of NBC Just Watch Us Now from 1982-83. When the Times Mirror bought WSYR-TV and became WSTM, Charlie Van Dyke was the voiceover announcer for 20 years beginning in 1980.

At the time of this broadcast, their current building on the hills of Johnson City was 4 months old after they left the basement of 50 Front Street dating back to 1959.

WPIX Channel 11 News (partial) 10/3/1990 Eric Samuelson 2025-02-17 | Recorded from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on cable. This newscast starts with a cold open from New York's most popular independent station with anchors Marvin Scott & Sheila Stainbeck with Bob Harris on weather and the late Jerry Girard on sports. Reporters in this broadcast are Tim Malloy & Drew Scott (no relation to Marvin). Marvin has been with WPIX Ch 11 since 1980 and was previously on WNEW Ch 5 Ten O'Clock News from 1972-80 as a reporter and weekend anchor. Sheila Stainbeck anchored Ch 11 from 1985-93 and then anchored CNBC. She was previously on another Ch 11 WBAL-TV Baltimore from 1979-85. Jerry anchored sports on Ch 11 from 1974-95 until he retired. Jerry died from cancer in 2007 at age 75. Bob Harris was the weatherman on Ch 11 from 1980-93 until he retired as well. He was previously on the radio as Dr Bob Harris on WCBS News Radio 88 from 1977-79 until he was fired and then went to WNEW Radio for a year. Both Tim Malloy & Drew Scott were on Ch 11 twice. Tim was a reporter on Ch 11 from 1978-85 & 1989-94. In between, he anchored KCOP Ch 13 Los Angeles from 1985-89. After he left New York, he was a reporter & anchor in West Palm Beach on WPEC Ch 12 and later WPTV Ch 5. Drew was back & forth between WPIX Ch 11 and Long Island station WLIG-TV 55. Drew was a reporter on Ch 11 from 1979-85, then Long Island established TV station where Drew anchored News 55 from 1985-89. After WLIG-TV 55 canceled their 10:00 newscast, Drew returned to WPIX Ch 11 for his second run from 1989-93 covering Long Island. Then WLIG-TV 55 brought back their 10:00 newscast and Drew anchored there once again. Both Tim Malloy & Drew Scott got their starts on WOR-TV Ch 9 News at Noon with Tom Dunn back in 1975. WPIX had a nationwide syndicated newscast Independent Network News which ran from 1980-90.

They were previously at the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Airport in Avoca from 1962-89 and before that 333 Madison Ave Downtown Scranton from 1953-62 where the station was born. By the summer of 1989, WNEP-TV 16 got a bolder version of the logo seen here until early 1994.
Donahue Betty White, Bea Arthur, Marla Gibbs 10/1/1985 Eric Samuelson 2025-02-15 | Stars of new hit sitcoms on NBC Betty White & Bea Arthur from The Golden Girls and Marla Gibbs from 227. The Golden Girls began their 7 year run until Bea Arthur left in 1992. Without Bea Arthur, the rest of The Golden Girls cast continued their roles in a follow up The Golden Palace which lasted one season on CBS in 1992-93. 227 began it's 5 year run until the series ended in 1990. Two of the ladies starred in All in the Family spinoffs Bea Arthur as Maude and Marla Gibbs on The Jeffersons (recently cancelled by CBS after 10 1/2 years) and Betty White was one of the stars of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The video begins with a bumper with Vernoica McQuilan who was a reporter on Action News from 1981-94. She's married to Paul Daffine who was also an Action News reporter from 1982-89 and then became news director from 1989-94. Today, Mr & Mrs Daffine now lives in San Diego.

Reporter in this broadcast is longtime Action News legend Greg Catlin. This was during the Mark & Allison era from 1994-96. Mark became anchor of Action News in May 1993 and he was solo during his first year which was the last year of the classic era and Chirs was his sports anchor throughout Mark's 3 year run. Chris Matheus replaced Dave Moulton (1991-93) after he was fired. When Action News expanded to 90 minutes in September 1996, Mark was demoted only to anchor Action News at 11:00 with Candice Chapman until he left in December. Today, Mark now anchors WLUK Fox-11 Green Bay, Wisconsin, Allison now anchors at WUSA Ch 9 Washington, DC, and Chris Matheus now anchors sports at KLAS Ch 8 Las Vegas but his mustache is long gone.

Lorri Lewis anchored newsbreaks on WOLF Ch 38 from it's birth June 6, 1985 until January 4, 1991. WOLF-TV began it's 10pm newscasts since January 7, 1991 with the premiere of News Watch 16 at 10:00 anchored by Craig Jahelka & the late Jill Garrett. WOLF-TV aired the 10:00 news from the WNEP Ch 16 studios until December 31, 2009. Then the 10:00 was from the WBRE Ch 28 studios from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2016 anchored by Candice Kelly. Fox-56 had finally cut the umbillical cord established their own newscasts by themselves since January 1, 2017.
