This facility is not unique in their horrendous treatment of animals. This is a standard representation of factory farming here in Canada. This action is not about this one facility, or a call for better animal welfare standards, but rather a call to end the inherently violent animal agriculture industry entirely.Our message is simple; “animals are here with us, not for us”. This was the first court appearance for 21 combined charges after exposing criminal animal cruelty at Excelsior Hog Farm.Excelsior has still not faced repercussions for their illegal actions. The farm owner, who broke several animal cruelty laws, remains on his farm and continues to put these pigs through hell. Meanwhile, us activists are being charged, which further proves the lack of transparency and accountability within animal agriculture.These charges are, in part, due to the BCSPCA failing the animals by going against their policy and turning in a whistleblower to the police. Animal Activist On TV Following Arrest: RibFest Bank Lockdown (2019) Ban Fur Farms BC 2019-12-03 | Animal & Environmental activist, Amy Soranno, was released from custody shortly after her arrest, along with six other women, who had chained themselves to the front doors of Interior Savings Credit Union in Kelowna on November 18th 2019, protesting their involvement with Ribfest. The activists were protesting the bank's sponsorship of Ribfest, a festival that destroys our environment & supports farms that have been proven to conduct criminal animal cruelty (Excelsior Hog Farm in Abbotsford BC). Canada just declared a national climate emergency, stating that we‘re facing an urgent crisis driven by animal agriculture. Activists Lockdown Bank - Ribfest Protest (2019) Ban Fur Farms BC 2019-11-26 | Activists Lock-down Interior Savings Credit Union Downtown Kelowna. Monday November 18th, 7 female activists locked themselves to the two front entrances of Interior Savings Credit Union in Kelowna, BC Canada. This prevented Interior Savings from opening, while more activists arrived to protest, holding signs saying “Stop Sponsoring Ribfest.” The activists remained locked down until they were removed by police.Ribfest cannot happen without sponsors donating money, therefore we are calling on Interior Savings to stop supporting a festival that destroys our environment & supports farms that have been proven to conduct criminal animal cruelty. Excelsior Hog Farm in Abbotsford supplies pig ribs to many of RibFest’s vendors. This farm has been under scrutiny, following multiple investigations this year, including a video released by PETA. Excelsior Hog Farm was also the location of the Meat The Victims Canada action that took place in April. Most recently, there was also a video released containing hidden camera footage of the farmers at Excelsior conducting criminal animal cruelty.Furthermore, is it appropriate for a credit union to divert their money towards an event that‘s a leading contributor to our environmental destruction? Animal Activist Arrested #PigTrial3 (Meat The Victims Canada) Ban Fur Farms BC 2019-10-02 | #PigTrial3 Gofundme Campaign: gofundme.com/f/pigtrial3-legal-defense-fundDuring Canada's first Meat The Victims action, at Excelsior Hog Farm, I was arrested and charged with Trespass, Break and Enter, and Mischief.On April 28, 2019, myself and around 200 other activists conducted a Meat The Victims action by storming Excelsior Hog Farm in Abbotsford, BC. We occupied the farm, sitting with the caged pregnant pigs, for approximately 7 hours. They eventually agreed to our negotiation of letting the media inside the farm to document the realities these pigs are forced to endure. This was not only Canada’s first Meat The Victims action, it was the ground-breaking first mass action of this kind here in our country!What I saw inside that factory (farm) will haunt me forever. The distress, sounds, stench, and degree of suffering was unlike anything I had witnessed before. These pigs never experience fresh air, or grass, or sunlight. Ever. They’re confined in a dark dirty concrete dungeon, unable to move or do anything that comes naturally to them. There were dead bodies scattered throughout the farm, and dumpsters full of dead pigs and piglets outside of the barns. The psychological distress these pigs exhibited was unignorable, and the physical pain was overwhelmingly apparent. Blood, cuts and open wounds were seen everywhere I looked.As a result of exposing the truth, and organizing this action, I was arrested for Break And Enter, Trespass, and Mischief. Everyone who entered the farm was arrested, however I was the only activist who was taken into custody and is facing charges. At the police station I was fingerprinted, had my photo taken, and my phone was seized. I received a date to appear in court, with conditions to my arrest, stating I could not go to any farms or petting zoos in the whole province of British Columbia until my court date. A search warrant was also issued on my phone looking for anything pertaining to April 28th, the date of the action.I was due to attend court on August 3, 2019; however, my court date was postponed for an unnamed reason. Since this time, more search warrants have been issued on my phone for alleged Break and Enter at Excelsior Hog Farm on dates prior to April 28th. There have also been new developments of arrests, seizures of property, and the police going to people’s homes in the middle of the night stating that they are looking for me, referring to me as “a criminal who is facing decades in prison”. I’m not sure the reason for this, as the police have all my information, including my home address.Needless to say, the Abbotsford Police Department are putting an exorbitant amount of resources into this case. Despite documented criminal animal cruelty taking place at Excelsior Hog Farm, including footage of workers kicking pigs, using electric prods on the faces of pigs, and tail-docking & castrating distressed piglets without anaesthetic, the Abbotsford PD are only interested in going after the activists who took the footage and exposed the hidden cruelty.I will continue to advocate for animals and expose their torturous realities. I will use my court case as a platform to raise more awareness, and to generate mass media stories for the 20 million pigs that are brutally bred, confined, mutilated, tortured, and slaughtered each year in this country.If my criminal case is won, this could lead to new ground-breaking laws set in place for exploited “farmed” animals here in Canada, and could potentially protect the general public from legal punishment when reporting animal cruelty on private property.
