Muse and DionysusThank you for watching "The Historical Costuming Community has a Problem"! This is a video that I should've made a long time about about various events that have taken place in the historical costuming community but sometimes even the bravest and most outspoken of us stays silent.
This problem creates further division, fosters a breeding ground where inclusiveness is put to the side, and fails to make events equitable.
I wanted to make this video because there has been a misconception that only white women are speaking up on these points. The white women who are speaking up are amplifying black voices who agree with me. I also want to clarify that white people who do reenacting, living history, and other education mediums should please keep dressing up an educating people, this video isn't about the good work y'all do.
If you haven't check out @MiahGrace's take on something else that recently happened in the historical costuming community please do so here: youtu.be/CZ24Q_D_l_Y

I don't know if the 70s is modern to us now but, considering this is a 50s design, it has been modernized a bit. One thing I truly love about The Baby's style is that he doesn't sees the potential of a pattern or picture beyond what's on the page. Because I was given similar freedom as a kid with choosing my wardrobe I have this skill as an adult. It's very fun to see what a three year old does when given the ability to see create an outfit for themselves.

We don't have any small plastic containers in our house, the only plastic containers we have, have been saved from getting take out. If you have small, breathable containers you can use those for germination. You can also use a clean milk jug, with the top cut off, to germinate seeds just make sure the seeds are very clearly labeled if your going to put more than one in the jug.
We also don't have masking or duct tape so I got the cheapest option of tape that could be used for labeling.
The popsicle sticks could obviously be gathered by eating popsicles but for the same cost as one box of popsicles I got 100 sticks.
If you have these items you can easily eliminate that immediate cost.
Buying seeds locally can cut the cost of seeds however you will be limited to what seeds are available locally. We bought some seeds locally last year but they didn't become available until the planting season had already started which meant that there wasn't time to germinate them. If this is your first time starting plants from scratch I would highly suggest not getting a lot of seeds until you work through some issues you might face like lack of humidity, keeping constant temps, storage of germinating seeds, etc.
We will be getting a seed packet of local wildflowers from our favorite nursery. We have a lemon tree and we are getting lavender and tomato seeds which means we need pollinators to drop by!
What are some of your gardening hacks to keep costs lows?

Local nursery's (not chains like Walmart or Lowes) often throw out excess starter pots or slightly damaged pots. It doesn't hurt to ask if you can have them/buy them at a discount. We have a couple of tree starter pots that have very mild damage but weren't visually appealing to customers.
Two years ago we bought a 20lb bag of soil to add to our compost. Since we moved to a new state we had to restart our compost and having soil in an apartment is not a need for composting but it does give a good starter when you have no compost to work with. We saved our soil from year to year and even move to move. To transport we use plastic bin. It sounds silly but we probably have 70lbs of soil right now which gets very expensive very quickly if we rebuy it.
Saving kitchen items that have started sprouting is also a huge help. While saving seeds can be tough for beginners (and I'd consider myself a beginner in the grand scheme of gardening) plants that sprout on their own are a cost effective alternative to buying seeds or starter plants. If you know you don't plant from seeds well and have the extra income starter plants are definitely worth it.
Plant swaps are a huge way to diversity your garden too! We usually attend two to three plant swaps a year as we germinate so many seeds.
Now for the elephant in the room, should you invest in the extras like a greenhouse, compost tumbler, hydroponic systems, trough planters, etc? Yes and no. Personally I wouldn't invest in these sort of items unless you have been consistently and successfully gardening in whatever aspect that you would like to for a couple years or your apartment has rules about what can be housed on the balcony (specifically talking about compost here). I think that some of these things can be helpful depending on the climate that you live in, your apartments features like the amount of sunlight, space outdoors, access to water due to your location but I do not, personally, see the value in these items until you've found your gardening groove.

I've gotten this question a lot since we started sharing our gardening videos, what if I don't hace a composting device? You can great a faux outdoor composting pile with pots. A garden compost is typically started on tilled dirt with food added and browns (leaves, dirt, cardboard, wood ashes) mixed in. This could be done as cheaply as the cost of a pot and some potting soil from dollar tree.
Before we had a balcony we used a simple, large, plastic bin with a lid. We didn't start with worms and we simple used dirt and added our food scraps. We kept the bin in our dining room.
The trick with composting in/at an apartment is avoiding meat and dairy. These items require a very consistently high temp compost. This may be achievable in consistently hot climates with an outside compost but it's impossible indoors.
We do not compost meat or dairy products in our tumbler.
Have you tried composting?

Our greenhouse is from Aldi; we got two last year as the planting season was ending. We got it last year and it hold heat wonderfully. We still have our lemon tree but it's in our house.
This year we plan to plant garlic, green onion, basil, collard greens, tomatoes, potatoes, and some other hearty veggies. With the recession here and the prices of food rising we have been waiting for planting season to start 😭.

My locs are semi-free form which means I do minimal manipulation. I haven't had any locs combine which is pretty sticking to me. I don't do much manipulation anymore, even for styling. For maintenance I wash them once a week with a shampoo bar as I'm pretty active and I use a hair butter I made myself for moisture.I think the hardest hump to get over for myself, mentally, was not being able to control the frizz and not having don't hair. I really had to decolonize my thinking about my own hair and starting looking towards more folks with locs to understand my journey a bit more. I think this process brought to light some internalized hair-isms I didn't know I held and I think it's important to challenge one's own thinking especially when it comes to concepts around afro textured hair. When I originally started this journey I wanted a style that was easier to maintain. I love wigs but there is still styling required with a wig and I love braids but consistent washing due to sweat shortens the hairstyle's life. Honestly, looking back the first few months I was so hung up on my expectations for my hair that I made it harder on myself. I did more styling and manipulation than needed. We're currently in the process of locing The Baby's hair. It's a very different journey from my own. I've combined either four or five of his locs already and his roots are locing extremely fast; my ends started locing first

I often get asked where I find inspiration for some of my looks, I like to look up vintage patterns online when I'm looking to create something I normally wouldn't imagine on my own. Etsy is a great resource for such vines! I also like to use Google image search and then check out the website these patterns are featured on to make sure the time period is accurate to what I'm looking for.
I originally shot this in one take and had to go back in during the editing process to add in the different parts as I realized that I spoke well over the allowed time on Instagram. One thing I forgot in the video was the treatment I got from the ultrasound tech. She accused me of also having an abortion and continually asked where I got the medication, she also rudely told me not to worry about the sound of my own heartbeat as it "wasn't a baby". She knew I had a miscarriage as well, I told her after her first comment.
This took place about two weeks ago at this point, I am in the process on making a formal complaint, and my mom did come in to help with The Baby. I'm still not feeling 100% but I'm thankful for the help.
I'm tagging @MamaDoctorJones in the hopes she sees it. She's spoken about some of the issues to follow Roe v Wade being overtured. She does great commentary on medicine for birthing people.

The first part of this video was filmed in December. I totally forgot I started this project 😅
