I had such a good time taking part and the material constraints forced me to think really think creatively - utilising an asymmetric shelf layout and hollow door with a thin textured face!For the project, I used 1 8x4ft 12mm birch plywood sheet with the only bits not being made out of plywood being the leather door pulls, hinges and shelf pegs! Making Knives + Using Branches as Handles? JMakes 2020-05-31 | In this video we finish off a project that I started last year to make a series of stainless steel knives, and we also go on to make the handle out of branches. This started out as an exploration into how with only one component of a product, the rest can be made, however I also found that the process enables you to learn about the properties of timber and how best to use tools - with the handle having the capacity to be personalised to the users unique needs - and poses a series of more fundamental questions: - When modern supply chains are pressured, how can we be more resourceful with the materials surrounding us?- Do we always need such complex and intricate machinery techniques, when there are many suitable existing natural forms?- And by leaving more of the products creation to the end user, can stronger emotional bonds be created? Making Shallow Display Shelves JMakes 2020-01-12 | Over the past couple of years I’ve made lots of models and collected all sorts of experiments with different materials and techniques. In this video, I give them a space of their own and make some shallow display shelves. Instead of using raw plugs and screws I also experimented lying the shelves directly on steel rods. Although this worked well for me, it probably isn’t the most optimum method, as you have to be really careful that you’re drilling square, and also fill any of the broken paintwork. Making a Birch Plywood Cabinet JMakes 2019-02-10 | Making a birch plywood cabinet for my living room to store a variety of books, files and electrical items! This project explored a design concept I had looked at previously - utilising organically shaped cutouts inspired by the forms of the Banksia seeds for door pulls - however this time I changed the materials and resolved some of the previous problems I had. I explored a new layout and composition that had much deeper drawers as well as modified the shapes of the handles to be more ergonomic and better proportioned to the overall form. Making a Reclaimed Plywood Cabinet JMakes 2018-08-05 | MORE INFO BELOW: In this video I made a cabinet for storing kitchen items, such as glasses, mugs, plates and bowls out of a sheet of plywood I reclaimed off the side of the road. The sheathing plywood had been left outside for a month, allowing a really nice texture and patina to develop on the surface, which I utilised for all of the carcass material, shelves and feet - only needing a 1/4 of a sheet of new plywood to complete the project! Making an End-Grain Wall Organisation Cabinet JMakes 2018-06-10 | MORE INFO BELOW: Making wall cabinets that store & organise stationary & papers. The carcass was made out of 12mm baltic birch finished in a black india ink and the doors were made out of 4mm thick pine end-grain veneer that was glued onto a 12mm baltic birch door. If I were to re-make the project I would have chosen wood that was drier, and more stable, as the veneers have started to check and shrink. I'd also have better planned the glue-up - using superglue or hot glue as well as PVA to hold the veneers in place, stopping them from warping, bowing or sliding. Making an Elongated Fixed Blade Knife [60] JMakes 2018-06-03 | MORE INFO BELOW: This week I finished a knife I started 7 months ago! The concept behind the blade was to create something that through its disproportionally, was extremely functional - the additional handle material ensures the knife will fit all hand sizes, and also allows for a variety of different grips ensuring a high level control and force behind each cut.The blade was made out of 01 Tool Steel & the handle was Beech stained with a black ink. I used Bee's Wax to create a psychical barrier so that the ink couldn't bleed into the rest of the handle.If you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer them below! Making the Silo Cabinet [58] JMakes 2018-05-21 | This wardrobe/cabinet was produced for my Art Foundation course. How to Apply Iron On Edge Banding [How To] JMakes 2018-05-09 | I've heard quite a few people saying they struggle with iron on edge banding, so I've made this quick tutorial showing you how to do it, using tips I learnt after working in a cabinet makers workshop. Using a piece of steel is 100x quicker and ends up in a much better result compared to a chisel or razor blade, because it doesn't dig into the face veneer and doesn't follow the grain of the wood. Making a Concrete Coffee Table from a Cabinet [55.5] JMakes 2018-05-06 | I learnt so much making this project and can think of so many things I’d change if I was making it again!Things I learnt:- I removed the stone aggregate from the top 1inch of the concrete pour, this helped to ensure no aggregate pieces showed up, and that the surface remained smooth. - Add a squirt of fairy liquid to your concrete mix, this acts as a plastizer, which helps the concrete flow into the mould. - Use a wet pointing trowel to smooth the surface layer of the concrete.- Make sure the mould is over reinforced, any flex at all will be amplified, and caused a bow in the final pour! (this actually ended up working in my favour however, as each component kind of ‘locked’ together.) Things I’d change:The two things I’d do different relate to weight – concrete is heavy, it’s the nature of the material, and although its still can be moved with two people, being lighter would definitely make it easier! So if I was doing it again I’d make foam inserts to take up the majority of the casting space, and I’d also consider looking into guns that can spray concrete, and then reinforce that with fibreglass so I’d end up with a shell rather than a solid block. This being said, I really like the way it came out – it works well proportionally, from a conceptual basis you can see all of the little details (like handles etc) and forms of the previous cabinet and it works functionally as well – things like the differentiation in height are really useful for books, magazines etc! The plaster I used is called 'fine art casting plaster of paris.' FYI: The plaster is brittle at first, but once the moisture has had time to evaporate & a sealant has been added it is suprisingly rigid and strong! If I were re-doing the project, I would make the circle moulds in a 'Ω' symbol, pinching the two right angled ends together to make a complete circle, instead of folding the aluminium back on itself.
