Abstract Logix
Konokol is the universal system of mastering rhythm without drums. Guitar legend John McLaughlin, who has advocated this system of learning rhythm for over 30 years, brings it all together with Konokol master Selvaganesh Vinayakram, one of the foremost percussionists from India. Divided into 6 chapters, the student moves from basic understanding of rhythm into the wonderful world of improvisation. Exercises are explained and demonstrated followed by improvisations which include all the exercise material of that particular chapter. You will learn through this course how to improvise rhythmically and how this system can help in your compositions. Following this, John McLaughlin explains and demonstrates on the guitar the benefit Konokol has had on his improvisations, and its usefulness in his compositions over the past 30 years.

A bona fide guitar hero in his native England, Ray Russell bridges musical worlds on Now, More Than Ever, his potent debut on the Abstract Logix label. Russell's latest release comes seven years after his last studio recording, Goodbye, Svengali, the innovative guitarist's heartfelt tribute to the late Gil Evans. Featuring an all-star cast, including drummer Gary Husband and bassists Jimmy Johnson, Mo Foster and Anthony Jackson, this bold outing straddles that no man's land between rock power and unfettered jazz improvisation while conjuring up ethereal guitar synth soundscapes along the way. Now, More Than Ever stands as one of the more dynamic outings in Russell's extensive discography. Fans of John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth and Terje Rypdal will want to check out this latest triumph from one of fusion's great innovators. The creator of such groundbreaking and seminal jazz-rock works as 1968's Turn Circle and 1969's Dragon Hill, guitarist-composer Russell emerged on a fertile '60s London music scene as a ubiquitous session musician, along with fellow six-stringers John McLaughlin and Jimmy Page. Though Russell has an abundance of recordings to his credit, from small group sessions to soundtrack recordings for movies and TV, Now, More Than Ever stands as a primer for the wide stylistic swath that this inspired artist continues to cut with his trusty six-string in hand.

The amazing Alex Machacek has done it again. Combining mindboggling fluidity, daredevil string-skipping technique and audacious intervallic leaps on the guitar that will make even the most ardent Allan Holdsworth fan sit up and take notice with a penchant for precision ensemble playing that rivals the late, great Frank Zappa's -- as heard on the rhythmically complex and slightly tongue-in-cheek "Why Not (aka Disco Polka)," and the equally intricate "Safe Word" -- the extraordinary Austrian native and current California resident has upped the ante on all of his previous impressive outings as a leader with FAT (Fabulous Austrian Trio). The guitarist is ably accompanied on his sophomore outing as a leader by superb drummer Herbert Pirker and outstanding bassist Raphael Preuschl, who appeared together on some tracks from {Sic], Machacek's impressive 2005 debut for Abstract Logix.
Says Machacek, "My last recording was 24 Tales, a 're-composition' of an existing 51-minute long drum solo by Marco Minnemann, and the focus there was on composition. On FAT I wanted to have more improvisations and more emphasis on interplay...just like a band, so to speak." That kind of organic interplay can be heard between Machacek, Pirker and Preuschl on the ethereal ballad "What A Time To Be Me" and the spacious "Let's Not Argue," the latter which has Alex playing baritone guitar. As a kind of relief from the sheer density, astounding intricacy and impossible unisons demonstrated elsewhere throughout FAT, there is the gorgeous solo bass piece "Ton Portrait" (a nod to the late, great Jaco Pastorius's anthemic "Portrait of Tracy") and the atmospheric closer, "Let's Not Argue," which incorporates a great deal of breath between the notes while also showcasing Machacek's inimitable six-string facility midway through. The guitarist reserves his most lyrical playing for "D-Lite" and on "The Life of Herbert P." he creates a 're-composition' around an existing drum solo by Pirker. The Fabulous Austrian Trio also generates some potent swinging momentum on the album's jazziest number, "Studio Swing."
Jimmy Herring (guitars); Jeff Sipe, Tyler Greenwell (drums); Matt Slocum (keyboards); Neal Fountain, Etienne Mbappe (bass); Bill Evans (saxes); Bela Fleck (banjo); Nicky Sanders (violin); John Keane (pedal steel); Carter Herring (cello); Ike Stubblefield (B3 organ)
Subject To Change Without Notice is the second solo album from American guitar hero Jimmy Herring which features mostly all original tunes as well as highlights such as amazing covers of the Mahavishnu Orchestra's Hope, George Harrison's Within You Without You and Jimmy McGriff's Miss Poopie. Joining Jimmy on lead guitar are such top notch musicians as Neal Fountain and Etienne Mbappe on the bass, Jeff Sipe and Tyler Greenwell on drums, Matt Slocum on piano and keyboards. Making special guest appearances on the album are Bela Fleck on banjo, Bill Evans on saxophones, and Nicky Sanders on the violin and Carter Herring on the cello.

On November 20 and 21, 2010, maverick record label Abstract Logix hosted a series of spectacular performances, featuring an array of artists who handily defy genre categorization in favor of unbridled expression. The first New Universe Festival was a die-hard music lover's dream, defined by artists who seamlessly mingle compositional ingenuity and improvisational grace and fervor.
Among the featured musicians were pioneering guitarist John McLaughlin and his current band the 4th Dimension with special guest, world music legend tabla maestro Zakir Hussain; Widespread Panic guitar hero Jimmy Herring with his electric band; Return to Forever Drummer Lenny White; the all-star quartet Human Element (keyboardist Scott Kinsey, bassist Matt Garrison, percussionist Arto Tunçboyaciyan; fearless guitarist and improviser Wayne Krantz appearing with the amazing Anthony Jackson on bass; visionary Indian composer and drummer Ranjit Barot; and emerging guitar visionary Alex Machacek.
''I feel honored to participate,'' says festival headliner John McLaughlin, while on tour promoting his Grammy-nominated album To the One. ''My life has been dedicated to my instrument and music, and I continue to devote myself to music in order to be worthy of such a privilege. You will hear the kind of complicity that exists between us all this is a very special element, and frankly essential for making good music.''
Jimmy Herring very succinctly put it, ''This is real music played by real people, happening in real time. We're up there listening and reacting to one another, and people genuinely respond to the risks we take. This is human music in a mechanized age.''
After decades spent honing his craft in a staggering array of roles, from composing award-winning music for films to producing other artists to working as a sideman in a variety of contexts, Ranjit Barot is at last making his debut as a performing bandleader with Bada Boom, to be released by Abstract Logix on November 16th, 2010. The captivating, uniquely personal Bada Boom ("bada" being Hindi for "big," rendering the album a bilingual pun on the "big bang") draws from the groundbreaking examples of Barot's biggest influences, John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain -- both of whom are featured on the project. McLaughlin contributes a blistering solo to the opening track, "Singularity," while Hussain provides the driving force for "Supernova."
Composed of four original pieces and two striking reinventions of traditional Indian themes, Bada Boom investigates Barot's cultural and musical dichotomy with insight and inventiveness. Rather than simply recast one culture in the guise of another -- transposing tabla parts onto the drum set, playing funk guitar licks on the veena, etc. -- Barot composes and arranges provocative, thoughtful dialogues from which these varied influences, textures, and techniques eventually emerge as one voice. Carefully deployed improvised passages, fired by his churning, intricate drumming, further dissolve the perceived barriers, transcending taxonomy and simply becoming music.
The son of a legendary classical Indian dancer, Ranjit Barot took up a western instrument -- the drum kit -- at age 12, inspired by the fusion and progressive rock revolution that was redefining possibilities for a new generation of musicians. Dividing his formative years between England and India, Barot developed a musical sensibility that gracefully intertwines the rich rhythmic and harmonic traditions of classical Indian musics with the improvisational fervor of jazz and the immediacy and accessibility of rock and other popular forms. "I want my playing to be the duality that I am," he reflects. "I am an Indian, but I dream in English."
Bada Boom may be Barot's debut album as a performing composer, but it has been generations in the making, with inspiration drawn from every corner of his remarkable, still-unfolding career. "The meeting point of all art is the same, at least to me," Barot concludes. "When you strip away things like genre, ethnicity, art form even, then you are left with just intent and spirit."
And I really meant that, says White. We need to restart a revolution so that we can take back the music and stop the fluff. And Im hoping that this new album is a representation of that.
Accompanied by a crew of unsung guitar killers in Nick Moroch (a former member of Whites Astral Pirates), David Gilmore, Tom Guarna and David Bendeth, keyboardists George Colligan, Bernard Wright, Donald Blackman(another Astral Pirate )and Vince Evans and bassists Victor Bailey, Richie Goods, Charles Fambrough and his RTF bandmate Stanley Clarke, White unleashes with Zeppelinesque fury on Anomaly, his tenth overall recording as a leader.

Abstract Logix 2009
The boldly inventive improvisations of guitarist Wayne Krantz have long held a fascination for fans of dynamic, uncompromised music. Ex-Sideman with Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Michael Brecker , Billy Cobham and many others, Krantz has focused on live performance for nearly two decades, holding down a residency at New York Citys 55 Bar. Now, with Krantz Carlock Lefebvre, he is returning to a recording studio to document his own music for the first time in over fifteen years .
Krantz Carlock Lefebvre features Krantz as one-third of a longstanding trio that also includes virtuoso drummer Keith Carlock (Sting, Steely Dan, James Taylor) and bassist extraordinaire Tim Lefebvre (Chris Botti, Uri Caine), which was first convened in 1997. Giving this band a voice in the context of a studio is a big deal for us, Krantz says. Everything weve ever released together has been some kind of live album. Now we have the clarity and concision of the studio along for the ride. Cut live in the studio and then augmented by overdubs, the result is Krantzs most personal statement yet, more strongly rooted in composition while still rich with the improvisational nuances that make his live performances so riveting. Get ready for one of strongest musical statement of the year.
Jimmy Herring (Guitar), Oteil Burbridge (Bass), Scott Kinsey (Keys), Greg Osby (Sax), Jeff Sipe (Drums).
