trentemøller: Terrified
updated
With the new album Memoria under his belt and right in time for the second leg of his album tour, Trentemøller releases a brand new song - Into The Silence. The new work fits seamless into the musical universe of Memoria and presents us with a wonderful, dreamy, guitar and synth driven Indie-song. Into The Silence is also the first cooperation with DíSA (Disa Jakobs), the singer of the all new Trentemøller band on the Memoria tour. Her vocals are perfectly woven into the song, sometimes floating above and sometimes shining through from the engine room. "During our recent tour," says Trentemøller, "Disa and I spoke about doing a song together. It felt quite obvious as we really developed a common language when we played so many concerts together already. After finishing our first leg of the tour, I immediately went to the studio and wrote the music for this song. It really came to me easily as I felt quite inspired. Disa then wrote this beautiful and bittersweet text that compliments the music so well I think. And her unique voice just melts into the music in a very natural way." Trentemøller played a handful of shows in Europe before the entourage takes off to North America in September.

I’m so proud of this album as it’s the first time I have written all lyrics and vocal melodies myself.
A huge thank you to Lisbet Fritze for bringing my songs to life 🖤

On 'Like A Daydream' Lisbet Fritze's earnestly delivered vocals are buoyed up by carillon guitar, tethered to a relaxed drum shuffle, by a progression of bass chords.

My last single, before the album drops, is out now and it’s called “No More Kissing In The Rain“. It’s a song that really defines the whole album I feel , and one of the first songs I wrote for it . 🖤

His latest single, “No More Kissing In The Rain” gives the impression that it’s easier to find comfort in the darkness when it feels like particles of light are only moments away from assembling, perhaps divulging a bright secret. “No More Kissing In The Rain” announces itself with an overture to a synth opera shot on supersaturated film. Warm waves of sweeping, lush pads soon land to make space for vocalist Lisbet Fritze’s tone-setting proclamation: “My dear, I am running out of time.” Concurrently, her heartfelt vocals are pushed and pulled by an almost playfully mephistophelean synth line. Each glistening guitar glissando bloom projects the feeling that a series of curtains are being drawn back, revealing the next act. The chorus arrives like an unexpected sun flare, overexposing halide crystals, and smearing the emulsion. “Is this the end of everything?” It feels like the end of a relationship, but is the relationship between two people, or the corporeal being and its earthbound existence? “You know I know we’re growing colder.” The final orchestral tag of this pocket symphony signals its closure. There’s no hint of trepidation, only a sense of comfort, albeit a vague one. Was the sun flare actually the light at the end of the tunnel?

No stranger to noise rock or dark psych, Copenhagen’s Trentemøller has fused the two to create the powerful “Dead Or Alive”, the latest single from his sixth studio album, Memoria. It comes out of the gate at full throttle and storms the senses. A hooky bass line opens the track, ultimately taunting whip-crack drums into entering an unabating duel. Oscillating echoes materialize, like murmurs from the netherworld, eventually culminating into actual voices. Does the song’s mantra, “you’re not dead or alive” refer to liminality, as we hurl towards whatever is next, or call into question our somatic state entirely? Whereas the previous release, “All Too Soon,” delicately explores our chapter of mortality, “Dead Or Alive” comes from a more primal place. Disorienting strobe light guitar collides with a jet flanging psychic assault, ratcheting everything up one more notch before it all collapses upon itself.

It’s a sensory sojourn that lives in the fleeting space where transience and the terrestrial meet. Once again Lisbet Fritze’s elegantly commanding voice delivers the narrative in a clear expression of unanimity with Trentemøller’s music and lyrics. Trentemøller's distinctive style of combining textures is, of course, present. Dry drums meet headlong with sumptuous reverb trails, feedback stabs antagonize lush passages, and whip cracks of spring reverb commingle with tambourine as percussive flourishes, all directed by a simple, circular, guitar figure that pivots to a majestic bell peal at the chorus. “All Too Soon” examines ostensibly diametric relationships of light and dark, life and death, day and night, love and hate, while actually presenting them as dualistic, and symbiotic, influencing each other as they interrelate. What might appear to be a dispiriting take on our mortality could just as easily be interpreted as its acceptance being liberating. We can’t live forever If we could we would All too soon we will be gone That’s quite a lot to pack into a four minute pop song. Perhaps, though, by the time the song abruptly implodes, the listener is left with a feeling that while it’s guaranteed we will eventually all shake off this mortal coil, maybe our time here is just an interstitial part of an eternal arc, masquerading as a finite frame.

Over his career, multi-instrumentalist Anders Trentemøller has crafted songs steeped in adumbral elements , evoking images of gorgeous, balmy, Scandinavian summers and bleak Nordic winters, sometimes within the same song. His new song "No One Quite Like You” features Tricky reciting a six word mantra over a five note passage. The entire song is bathed in intimacy, from studio vérité elements like the mechanical noise and hammer clacks of the piano, to Tricky’s weary delivery, which falls somewhere between a lullaby and a warning. Add to this Byzantine string arrangements by fellow Danish violinist Maria Jagd arrive, and you have yet another mesmerising release from Trentemøller. The reflective piano figures of ‘Vespertine’ manifests this subtle yet powerful prologue to the A side of the second and last stand alone single release of 2021 by Trentemøller.

I have genuinely loved Christmas since I was a little boy.
And I always wanted to do my own version of one of the great Christmas songs.
I chose Silent Night as it has such a beautiful melody that, for me, sums up the whole vibe of Christmas.
Originally it was a lullaby and since I became a dad, Silent Night made so much sense to me especially as it’s my girlfriend Lisbet Fritze who sings on it.
On the cover it’s me with my mom one Christmas night many years ago.
I hope you like my take on the song and may I wish you the very merriest of Christmases and the happiest of New Years
and thank you so very much for letting me spend this Christmas with you.

Blue September
Blue September
You got me thinking
And loose my temper
Do you remember
Not so long ago
The endless summer
Mmm...
Bright nights are ending
Now it’s closing in
But I’m still here
Feeling the fire burning
My bones are cold but
The world is turning
Sugarcoated Memories
Of long lost days
Flying high on fantasies
In mysterious ways
Mmm...

Try A Little
Sit me down baby
Tell me that you’re crazy
Cause I’ve lost my mind
Enough times
For you
Solitude is what you do
When you think it’s over
Walk in time
W the beat I gave you
Love lies
Under it all
Under it all
Under it all
Chorus
Try a little
Work a little
Be a little
But more for me
Try a little
Work a little
Be a little
bit more for me
2nd verse
As I reflect on the time
Seems like I knew it
All then
Why would I wonder why
Why would I
Why would I
Solitude is what you do
When you think it’s over
As I reflect on the time
Love lies under it all
Under it all
Chorus
Try a little
Work a little
Be a little bit
More for me
Try a little
Work a little
Be a little
Bit more for me
Try a little harder
Be a little bit more for me
Be a little bit more for me
Be a little bit
Be a little bit
Be a little bit
More for me

In The Garden
Golden like someone you knew before
Born out of rage
Look inside the door at what is waiting now
How could you respond to this somehow
I'm in the field
I'll walk around
In the garden
I ask permission
To be silent
Always listening
Now i can hear it
Now i can hear it
I will deconstruct
Gravity is me it’s leaking out
Of my identity
In the golden tide
On the beach where i
See a smoking gun
I cover up my eyes
It is not
It is not
But what is it
Take it apart
It’s a song you heard
It is not
It is not
But what is it
Take it apart
It’s a song you heard
Paint it white
What will i do
If i’ve got nothing to lose
What will i do
I’ve got nothing to lose
now the wait is almost over ...
it's time to wake up 'sleeper'!

"The fantastic vocals by Fyfe Dangerfield of the band Guillemots was recorded by him in his kitchen. He sang directly into the build in mic in his laptop, and I love that intimate vibe. We never thought of re-recording it in a professional studio because it has such a nice and personal vibe. The song also works very well as an instrumental, which was released on my Reworked/Remixed album and it was actually how it started, I simply sent Fyfe that instrumental version and he did the beautiful vocals on top of that."

Neverglade
(A. Trentemøller / F. Dangerfield)
As high as the ladder would climb
We tumbled aside
And hardened the whites of our eyes
And the stars have arrived
To start an elastic kind of day
So take your thought train home
Through animals and slaves
Our new city blows them away
And just as the curtains were raised
Somebody was asking the way
Aladdin was out of his cave
And we all fell down as the weatherman sang
Weatherman sang of crooked rain
Crooked rain that grew on trees
Grew on trees in the back of brains
Even the devil would pay
For half of a glass
For crooked rain alone could only make him laugh
But that face was never mine
And just as the buttons came off
The muffled thud of an angry crowd
Just like a secret we will be found
We are the circus we're going to town
So don't waste time, don't waste time
For the hay's never really made
Out here in Neverglade
I'm going outside to chase the rain
And you're going to stay in the basement again
The distant sound of blood on the waves
Awaits
"A tune I’m still very proud of. Written and recored in two hours! That was it. I didn’t change a single note afterwards because I was so happy with the result. I captured that longing vibe I had late that night and it still is a song I love to play live in different versions."
#Trentemøller #TheLastResort #MissYou
"The is also a tune we still play live. I played the bass guitar on the track back then, I’m not very good at it, but I managed to come up with this very simple bassline that basically is the whole track."
"A more abstract little intermezzo on the Into The Great Wide Yonder album. Very dark but at the same time there also some hope in it I feel."
"The opening tune on The Last Resort, and a song I still like to play live too. The get down in the middle is heavyly inspired by Mazzy Star as you can hear. I like how it builds up and then suddenly you are taken somewhere totally different compared to where you started."
"It's quite of a nearly symphonic journey. I wanted to have some interesting chord progressions that were not always what you expected. The choir vocals was sung by danish artist Ohland, I love that part of the song."
'Like Two Strangers' is a a song I wrote for my debut album 'The Last Resort'. I did it in 2 days. I can remember, staying up until late in my little apartment in Copenhagen. Most of the track was done with headphones on so I wouldn't wake up my neighbours. The title was inspired by a sentence in a Mazzy Star song.
