Bald Eagles on the Nooksack River | Washington Wildlife in 4K Nathan Rolls | Cinematic Wildlife 2024-02-04 | Each winter, bald eagles congregate around Washington's Nooksack River to feed on the salmon that swim upstream to spawn. I filmed these migratory and resident bald eagles over 3-4 weeks in November and December, capturing their most active moments this winter.I spent many rainy and frigid mornings settling-in on the riverside in anticipation of witnessing these majestic birds in action. Some days, I only managed to capture a few seconds of usable footage, as wildlife is unpredictable, and animal habits are ever-changing. Its understated beauty may be overshadowed by its muted, earthy tones, but its subtle elegance and unique behaviors make it a captivating and often overlooked bird in the avian world.This is one of the reasons why I love filming. If I had just taken photographs, it would have been challenging to capture its unique behavior. Don't let the slow motion fool you; this bird was incredibly quick as it dove into the river current in search of aquatic insects.
Birds of the Skagit | Washington Wildlife in 4K Nathan Rolls | Cinematic Wildlife 2024-01-11 | I still take plenty of photos, but I feel that video has several advantages over still images. I enjoy capturing the dynamic behavior and movement and creating an immersive experience that showcases their natural behaviors in motion.One such remarkable behavior demonstrated in this video is wing-clapping. Short-eared owls snap their wings together in order to warn off intruders or other competition. They snap their wings together below the body in a burst of two to six claps.

To avoid crowds and film in a different light, we reversed our schedule partway through our trip, driving and hiking throughout the night; during the summer months, there is very little 'darkness' during these hours due to the high latitude and the earth's tilt on its axis.

Spending numerous hours each day, from dawn until twilight, we got to know these amazing animals (from a safe and respectable distance!).
