Rondo alla zingarese (Presto): Vista Lirica live at Brooklyn Public Library, November 2013. The exuberance of the music and performance led to an explosive standing ovation, the whole concert was well appreciated and far outshone the dry acoustic and less than ideal recording quality. This is one of a set of 4 pieces I composed and performed for special events at B'nai Jeshurun, NYC. They're not intended as additions to klezmer repertory nor as direct imitations of cantorial singing; they mark an important chapter of a personal spiritual journey, which continues to be a variegated exploration.
This recording was also used in a production of 'Shayna Maidel' and King's Head Theatre (London), 1990 -1993.Schubert: Shepherd on the Rocknrynston2013-12-26 | Vista Lirica: Emily Howard, mezzo-soprano; Neil Rynston, clarinet; Beth Levin, piano
Vista Lirica took a less trodden approach to this song, Schubert's last of over 600, taking into account that Der Hirt was written for Anna Milder-Hauptmann -- known to have sung many heavy dramatic roles, including Leonora in the première of Beethoven's Fidelio. Schubert composed Der Hirt after having completed his late piano sonatas and many other great works which highlight extremes of dark and light. In so doing, we perhaps bring out different angles of this piece by way of slower tempi and darker colors, esp. in the 1st and 2nd sections.
Franz Joseph Haydn remarked on Milder's voice, "it's like a house". With apologies to the light lyric shepherd boy type who is usually called upon to sing Der Hirt and who is hereby being thrown off the Fels, with the hope that a more dramatic piece and a more majestic awe for nature might arise from his fall: "the great cathedrals of the earth, with their portals of rock, the mosaics of clouds, the choirs of torrents, and the altars of snow, sometimes with purple sparkling stars, . . . mountains are the beginning and the end of all natural scenery," as John Ruskin wrote.Schumann Fantasiestücke, N.
