Desiring to dedicate herself entirely to God, she made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where she prayed at the holy places where Jesus had lived, died, and risen. She also traveled to Rome, seeking to strengthen her faith at the heart of the Church.When she returned to Sweden, Ingrid gathered around her a group of women who shared her desire to live for Christ. Together they formed a community in Skänninge, following the Rule of Saint Dominic. They prayed, studied Scripture, practiced penance, and gave witness to God’s love through their humble way of life. This was the first Dominican convent for women in Sweden, and Ingrid became its prioress.Her holiness and wisdom inspired many. Together they formed a community in Skänninge, following the Rule of Saint Dominic. They prayed, studied Scripture, practiced penance, and gave witness to God’s love through their humble way of life. From a young age, she felt drawn to prayer and to serving the poor. When she was only 18, Agnes left her home and family behind to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland, and soon after, she was sent to India as a missionary. There, she took the name Sister Mary Teresa, after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.In Calcutta, she became a teacher and later the principal of a girls’ school. She was much loved, but as the years went by, she began to feel a new call from God—a call to leave the convent walls and serve the poorest of the poor, those who lived and died on the streets.One day, while traveling by train, she experienced what she later called “a call within a call.” She felt Jesus asking her to bring His love to the most abandoned and suffering people. With great faith, she left her comfortable convent life and stepped into the slums of Calcutta, wearing only a simple white sari with a blue border.At first, she had nothing—no money, no shelter—only her trust in God. She began by picking up the sick and dying from the streets, giving them dignity in their last moments. She started schools for poor children, cared for lepers, and opened homes for the abandoned. Slowly, others joined her, and together they formed the Missionaries of Charity, whose mission was “to quench the thirst of Jesus by serving the poorest of the poor.”Her work spread across the world, bringing hope to the forgotten and love to those who felt unloved. Despite criticism and challenges, she remained humble and firm in her faith, always saying:“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”Mother Teresa lived this truth until her death on September 5, 1997.
