Evidence and the Bible #33GOD: new evidence2022-05-03 | Many people think that the things in the Bible are just stories. But the Bible records things that really happened. As we have gone through this series, we have seen that there are many ways we can test what the Bible says.
We have seen that the Bible is about real places, real people, and real events. But in this series, we have only scratched the surface of the evidence. There is much more that we could look at, all supporting the conclusion that the Bible is true - it is not 'just stories.'
But if the Bible really is true, surely we should take its message seriously? So as we come to the end of this series, we would like to invite you to investigate the message of the Bible for yourself, and to look into what it means for your life.Reliable Documents - Just Stories? Evidence and the Bible #32GOD: new evidence2022-04-27 | Is the Bible that we have today what the authors wrote? Or has it been changed and corrupted through time? In the past few videos in this series, we’ve looked at some of the evidence that we do have today what the authors originally wrote.
The evidence of the Dead Sea Scrolls shows that the Old Testament documents have been copied accurately at least since the time of Jesus. And the evidence of the miniature scrolls from Ketef Hinnom shows that at least some parts of the Old Testament were copied accurately for six hundred years before that.
Whenever an older copy is discovered, it always confirms that the Bible has been copied accurately for hundreds or even thousands of years. What we have today is what the authors wrote. It hasn't been changed or corrupted through time. We can trust it.Scrolls from Ketef Hinnom - Just Stories? Evidence and the Bible #31GOD: new evidence2022-04-19 | In 1979 Gabriel Barkay was excavating at Ketef Hinnom, just outside the Old City of Jerusalem. He discovered two tiny silver scrolls - the size of cigarette butts. They are the earliest copies that have ever been found of texts of parts of the Old Testament.
One text comes from the priestly blessing in Numbers ch. 6 - ‘The Lord bless you and keep you...’ Another comes from Deuetronomy ch. 7. These are Old Testament texts dating back to the 7th century BC - five hundred years older than any of the Dead Sea Scrolls. They help to confirm how old the text of the Old Testament is.

Evidence and the Bible #30GOD: new evidence2022-04-12 | The early Christians made great use of Old Testament prophecies. In particular, they understood Isaiah 53 to be a prophecy about the death of Jesus.
This is why it is important to know how old the book of Isaiah is, and how reliable is the text we have? Is it the result of tampering by early Christians? We could have said that before 1947: The oldest Hebrew copy of Isaiah before the Dead Sea Scrolls were found dated to around 900 AD.
But there were two copies of Isaiah among the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the older one dates from a century before Jesus was born. This shows that the text of Isaiah has not been changed. Today, we can see this scroll in the Shrine of the Book, in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Evidence and the Bible #29GOD: new evidence2022-04-05 | In 1947, Bedouin shepherd boys accidentally discovered the first of the Dead Sea Scroll caves. These are caves where a Jewish community living at Qumran hid their precious scrolls from the Romans. In 70AD the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, and carried out a great persecution of the Jewish people. These scrolls were hidden in such a perfect environment that they would be kept for nearly two thousand years.
These manuscripts include almost every book of the Old Testament. This means we can read the Old Testament as it was at the time of Jesus. We can demonstrate that there has been faithful copying for two thousand years.

Evidence and the Bible #28GOD: new evidence2022-03-29 | There are about five thousand fragments of New Testament manuscripts in the original Greek language. The earliest of these is the John Rylands fragment - officially called P52. This is kept in the John Rylands library of the University of Manchester, in England.
It is a fragment of John’s gospel, and dates to around 125-150 AD. Most scholars believe that John’s gospel was the last to be written, so there is a very short gap between when this gospel was first written (probably in Ephesus), and when this copy was made.

It was found in Egypt in 1901, and is now housed in Magdalen College Oxford. The fragment (actually three small pieces of papyrus) contains parts of Matthew 26, and most scholars date it to around 170 AD.
Why is it important? It is the oldest copy we have of any part of Matthew’s Gospel. This Gospel was not written in Egypt, so here we have evidence for it being widely recognised and accepted, from the fact that the oldest copy turns up in Egypt.
The P64 fragments contain the earliest mention of some important names - Peter, Judas, the twelve, and Jesus himself.

One manuscript in his collection, called P45, contains the four Gospels and the book of Acts, and dates to around 250 AD.
The Gospels are the foundation documents of Christianity. They record the life and death of Jesus, and Jesus’s teachings. P45 is important because it shows us which documents the early church trusted. The Gospels that are in our Bible today (and no others) were universally recognised. As early as the late second century, the church leader Irenaeus said that there are just four Gospels.

It was discovered by Constantin von Tischendorf, in St. Catherine’s monastery, at the foot of Mt. Sinai. It made its way into the hands of the Tsar of Russia. Evidence and the Bible #22GOD: new evidence2022-02-15 | Many people think that the words in the Bible that we have today have been changed and corrupted over time, so that they are not what the original writers wrote.
Before printing was invented, all ancient documents had to be copied by hand. So the more handwritten copies there are, the better - and there are many more copies of some parts of the Bible than of any other ancient writing: there are nearly six thousand hand-written copies of parts of the New Testament in Greek. There are another fifteen thousand copies where it has been translated into other ancient languages.
Altogether, there are more than two and a half million pages of hand written copies of the Greek New Testament.
Then there are sixty one copies of the complete New Testament in Greek. For most other ancient documents, there are only a handful of copies.
So in terms of the number of copies, the Gospels are far and away the best documented texts from the ancient world.
It is also important that there are early hand written copies, and there are copies of the Bible that go back much closer in time to when they were written, compared to other ancient documents. There are copies of the whole Bible that go back to the fourth century. There are parts of individual books of the Bible that go back even closer to when they were written.
More hand written copies, and older copies, are being discovered all the time. Each new discovery confirms that these documents have been copied accurately for hundreds or even thousands of years.Real People - Just Stories? Evidence and the Bible #21GOD: new evidence2022-02-08 | There are many different people in the Bible. We may think these are just characters made up by the Bible writers.
But in 2014, the Biblical Archaeology Review published an article that listed fifty people in the Bible whose existence has been confirmed by archaeology. This includes enemy kings, like pharaohs Shoshenq, or Taharqa of Egypt. It also includes kings of Israel and of Judah like Ahab, Jeroboam, and David.
Three years later, the Biblical Archaeology Review published another article, confirming the reality of three more people in the Bible.
The Bible is not a collection of myths and legends. It is about real people, real history, and real events.

The book of Ezra in the Bible records a decree by Cyrus allowing the Jewish exiles in Babylon to return home and rebuild their temple (Ezra 1:1-3). This seems a very unlikely decree for an ancient emperor to make. No king had ever done anything like it, and scholars were skeptical of its truth.
Then in 1879, archaeologist Hormuzd Rssam discovered the Cyrus cylinder. This records a decree that Cyrus issued allowing the displaced peoples of his empire to return to their homelands - exactly as the Bible said. They were to rebuild their temples and places of worship - so that the gods of the nations would bless him.

Evidence and the Bible #19GOD: new evidence2022-01-25 | The Bible describes (in Daniel ch. 5) the moment when the Babylonian kingdom falls to Cyrus, king of Persia. The Babylonian king Belshazzar has a drunken party. A supernatural hand appears and writes on the wall - words of judgment on Belshazzar. Daniel is called in to interpret the writing on the wall. Belshazzar promises that if he can interpret the writing, he will make Daniel the third ruler in the kingdom.
One problem with this account is that no-one had heard of Belshazzar outside of the Bible. The last king of Babylon was Nabonidus, not Belshazzar. This problem was solved by th discovery of the Nabonidus cylinder. Nabonidus spent long periods of time away from Babylon, avoiding conflict. He left his son Belshazzar in charge in Babylon. So the book of Daniel did get it right - and this explains why Belshazzar could only offer to make Daniel the third ruler in the kingdom,

Evidence and the Bible #17GOD: new evidence2022-01-11 | There are many stories about the legendary English outlaw Robin Hood. According to these legends, he lived in Sherwood Forest and fought against the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham. Many people think that the Bible is just a collection of ancient stories – like the legends of Robin Hood – that it is not really true at all.
But then it is as if we looked at the legends of Robin Hood, and we discovered that the places in them are all real places, and the people are all real people.
This is exactly how it works with the Bible: it is not just a collection of ancient stories. It is about real people, in real places, and things that really happened. You can look at the evidence we present in this series, and maybe you disagree with one item or another. But this is missing the big picture – the way that all the evidence taken together shows that the Bible is true when it speaks about history - it is much more than 'just stories.'A Bird in a Cage - Just Stories? Evidence and the Bible #16GOD: new evidence2022-01-04 | 'Controlling the narrative' is nothing new. The Taylor prism is an ancient clay prism, found by Colonel Robert Taylor in 1830. It is the official record of the Assyrian king Sennacherib’s military campaign in Israel (701 BC). It was part of Sennacherib’s ‘controlling the narrative’ about his Israel campaign. Sennacherib’s problem was that he never conquered Jerusalem. This is a historical fact, which was foretold by the prophet Isaiah, as recorded in the Bible (see 2 Kings chapters 18 and 19).
Sennacherib has to explain away his failure to take Jerusalem. On the Taylor prism, he says ‘As for Jerusalem, I shut up (king) Hezekiah like a bird in a cage.’ Other Assyrian kings had used this expression. Sennacherib portrayed his Israel campaign as a complete victory, but this is not the truth of what happened.

Evidence and the Bible #15GOD: new evidence2021-12-13 | The siege of Lachish was recorded on a frieze by the Assyrian king Sennacherib, which is now on display in the British Museum. Why did he choose to record the siege of Lachish, which was a relatively unimportant city?
Sennacherib’s campaign is recorded in the Bible, in 2 Kings 18-19. As his army moved on from conquering Lachish and headed for Jerusalem, his forces were supernaturally destroyed by God.
So Sennacherib has nothing to say about Jerusalem. He is not about to admit that something went wrong with his campaign. So he immortalises his victory at Lachish, rather than his failure to take Jerusalem.

The Assyrian king Sennacherib laid siege to Lachish in 701 BC. The siege is recorded in graphic and brutal detail: the Assyrians built siege ramps, and used mobile wooden towers to attack the walls of the city. The frieze shows the cruel and vicious way the Assyrians treated captured nobles from the city. This siege is recorded in the Bible, in 2 Chronicles 32. This was the tomb of an important official in Hezekiah’s government. Some of the letters are missing, but the official’s name ended with ‘-yahu.’ The British Museum says it is most likely that this is the tomb of an official called Shebnyahu.
Shebna (the shortened form of Shebnyahu) appears in the book of Isaiah in the Bible. When the Assyrian king Sennacherib attacked Israel, Hezekiah sent Shebna to negotiate with him.
In Isaiah 22:15-19 there is a specific mention of Shebna’s tomb. Isaiah the prophet is sent to ask Shebna why he is building an elaborate rock tomb, which his body will never lie in. God specifically condemns Shebna for building this tomb.

King Hezekiah in the Bible (700 BC) was a real historical person, who we also know about from the archaeological record. Among other evidence, a bulla carrying his name has been discovered near Jerusalem.
This bulla was found in a collection of several hundred others from the same time. Very close to the bulla of Hezekiah there was another that carries the name Isaiah. This bulla is broken, so we can not be sure, but there are some Hebrew letters that come from the word ‘prophet.’ In 2018 the Israeli archaeologist Eilat Mazar announced that we now have a direct reference to the Biblical prophet Isaiah from the time of king Hezekiah.

These objects help us to understand the Bible better, and - in some cases - they dramatically confirm what it says. The Queen’s Seal - Just Stories? Evidence and the Bible #06GOD: new evidence2021-10-05 | More and more names are coming to light in the archaeological record which confirm that what we read in the Bible concerns real people, real history and real events.
Some of these finds are debatable. A good example would be the Jezebel seal. A seal carried the impression of someone’s name. It could be stamped into clay as a mark of ownership. One seal came to light in the 1960s and is now in the Israel Museum, that bears the unusual consonants Z, B, L. This indicates a Phoenician name.
Part of the seal is broken off, so it is difficult to reconstruct the full name, but the most likely contender - particularly given the beauty and the value of this seal - is Jezebel the Queen. If it is right, this reconstruction means that we can hold in our hands a seal that was made at the time of Queen Jezebel, bearing her name, and reminding us thousands of years later that we are talking about a real person from a real time in history (around 860 BC. A lot of people think that it is just stories, but they have never even looked at it seriously. But many of the things that it records have left traces that we can still see today.
There is no other book like the Bible, which records so many things that really happened, over thousands of years. Because of this we can test what it says.
Where the Bible speaks about history, and where we can test what it says, it is true. In these videos, we are looking at some of the evidence for this.
Why does this matter?
The Bible claims that God really is there, and that he speaks and acts in the world. God has spoken and acted through things that really happened, and the Bible claims to record how God has spoken and acted.
So the evidence that the Bible is true should encourage us to take its claim seriously as a message from God.
So it is worth looking at this evidence. And if it is convincing, it is worth taking the Bible’s message seriously.25.
