The Power of 3 | CREATE Expressive Abstract Art with Muted Colors & Texture Chris Loud Art 2025-08-29 | In this video, we’re going to create an expressive abstract art piece with muted colors and texture — using the power of 3. We’ll work with three colors (Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, and Naples Yellow, plus Mars Black and Titanium White), three textures, three layers, and three shapes to tie it all together. This “Power of Threes” framework is simple but gives us a ton of freedom to explore, experiment, and discover along the way — perfect for intuitive abstract painting.For the first layer, we’ll build texture with crumpled newsprint, cardboard, and Mars Black stamped with bubble wrap. Texture adds tactile energy to our surfaces and creates surprises that guide the next layers. This is where intuitive abstract painting really shines, because instead of starting with a blank, flat surface, we’re already responding to something alive and interesting.In the third layer, we’ll brush on thin veils of Naples Yellow and Titanium White. Using paint in thin layers lets earlier marks breathe through, builds atmosphere, and gives us flexibility to soften or glaze as needed. Finally, we’ll add three charcoal shapes to anchor the composition and give rhythm to the painting.Working in threes keeps the process simple but powerful. Painting Over a Mess—A Scenic Abstract Landscape Emerges Chris Loud Art 2025-06-01 | This abstract landscape painting didn’t start out so scenic—at first, it was a chaotic and expressive mess. In this video, I’m sharing the full journey of how I painted over a layered, intuitive abstract painting that wasn’t working out, and transformed it into a moody, scenic abstract landscape inspired by the work of Scottish painter Joan Eardley.I began with bold marks, spontaneous textures, and an unusual color combo: bright aqua green, yellow ochre, and alizarin crimson, plus some Mars Black and Titanium White. These colors don’t traditionally play well together, but that’s part of the fun. I love the challenge of working with clashing hues—it pushes me to explore new contrasts, balance, and mood. I was inspired to try this type of design after watching Robert Burridge's BobBlast video about checkerboard painting compositions. So credit where credit is due, thanks Bob for the inspiration and a great video. I’ll put the link in the description for Bob’s video and I highly encourage you to give it a watch.I’ve done several of these paintings this week and I’ll show you the final version of this painting as well as a few others at the end of the video. You might have noticed at the very beginning of the demo that I sprayed a little water on my paper. It was so dry and hot when I painted this, I sprayed my paper a little bit to help keep the paint from drying so quickly and help the paint flow a little easier on the paper. I had to keep spraying my palette to keep the paint from drying out.This particular painting is a geometric abstract landscape. I’m starting with a somewhat random and colorful background. I made some marks by scratching into the paint with a palette knife, some marks with wax pastels, and pressed the paint with bubble wrap. I used a piece of plastic mesh as a stencil. Several areas of this background will show through in the final piece.In Bob’s video, he talks about alternating between dark shapes and light shapes to create that checkerboard composition, but I chose a different path for this one and decided to play more with the colors.
