Nantsingonyama 2013-06-25 | Okay, to clear things up. There is a reason these lyrics are different from the Disney version, and they are not "wrong". Two months of careful research went into this version, consulting with native isiZulu speakers. The "normal" version of the lyrics which you see floating around is in fact littered with spelling and grammar errors. Many single words were broken into multiple pieces, and letters were left out or changed. It wus lice zpelhing eNg lish lice his. It was very cringe-worthy and the more I learned, I did not feel comfortable presenting it as a "correct" representation of isiZulu.

I don't know why the original is so mangled. I suspect a combination of compounding copying errors and possibly some attempted "simplification" to make it easier on the singers. In this version I have made a couple compromises to still make it match what's being sung. For example, "ningaphelilwa ngamandla" doesn't really make sense, but it's the closest I could get. The version presented here is still completely singable and still matches what the singers are doing. I use these lyrics to sing along to the song all the time.

There is also no official translation of this song. Lebo M never provided one as he knew the lyrics, especially the latter part, might be too "political" for Disney. This in fact proved to be exactly the case and when Disney finally figured it out they had it changed to the more bland version currently used in the show. The translation linked below has been provided by native isiZulu speakers.

I don't know much Gaelic, but I did some research, tidied up what I could of some spelling errors and added the correct accents on the letters.

(based on my own Canadian English accent, which is almost identical to a 'typical' American accent)

Interesting note: "zoziau", means more specifically "dickey" which is a type of detachable shirt-front for tuxedos, sometimes made of plastic. It's a wonderful pun in French, since zoziau sounds so close to Zazu, as well as suggesting Zazu's stiff and overly formal manner.

*Siyozingela - we are going to go hunting. Zulu verbs are made up of multiple parts that in English we express with different words. There is the subject concord which indicates the subject of the sentence (Si - we), a tense marker which indicates when this action happens (yo - future tense, are going to) and a verb root (zingela - hunt).
*Thatha - take, keep
*Uye - go toward [it]
*Ukunqoba - victory, to win

The Sesotho parts "fatshe leso lea halalela" I'm guessing a bit on, 'cause I really don't know any Sesotho (I did some digging through Sesotho dictionaries to come up with my translations). I welcome corrections from those more knowledgeable!

Apologies for my two spelling mistakes. 3:25 should read "journey" rather than "journay" (fail!), and 4:12 should be "ngizobuya" rather than "ngizabuya".

Circle of Life Zulu (HD)(LYRICS updated May 14!)

Nantsingonyama 2011-01-27 | Indlela Impilo, aka Circle of Life, in isiZulu. I am working on transcribing and translating the Zulu lyrics, but I'm very much a beginner at Zulu. I've only put in the lyrics I'm fairly sure about, but I understand bits and pieces of the entire song.

CAPTIONS & LYRICS

*"Isibhakabhakeni" changed to the grammatically correct "Esibhakabhakeni"

*New caption added "Kulo kusa kwaluka". I'm not complete sure about this one, I was having a hard time deciding if it was indeed "kulo kusa kwaluka" ("on the dawn that weaves") or "kulo kusa kulunga" ("on the dawn that makes right/gets in order"). I went with what's there now partially because it sounds a bit closer to what's being sung, partially because the isiZulu translations are generally quite literal from English, and the English lyrics are "on the path unwinding".

I am continuing to try and transcribe the two lines which I have not been able to. I've almost got "keeps great and small on the endless round", it's just a matter of one word, and making all the classes agree with each other. So far I have "okuncane okukhulu liku"-something-"liza" (the class 5 concords refer to ilanga, mentioned two lines previously). Gosh darn it, this is driving me nuts!

For anyone who is concerned with the finer points of the Zulu and Sesotho parts, some notes:

"Lefatshe la bonata rona / Lea halela"
These are the only lines in Sesotho. You can find numerous sites online which have this translated as "the land of our ancestors is holy", but I couldn't find any link to "ancestor" in the words themselves. "Lea halela" should actually be "Lea halalela", but apparently they needed to chop off a syllable....

"Is'khathi" (Sifikile/Busa iyo)
This is short for "isikhathi"

"Ubuse ngo xolo/Ubuse ngo thando"
The translations circulated on the net have these as "rule with peace", and "rule with love", but those would use "busa" rather than "ubusa".

"Ingonyama nengw' enamabala"
This one is somewhat unclear to me. Online it is commonly translated "the lion and the leopard come to an open place", but the Zulu words seem like an incomplete phrase. Literally, you have "ingonyama", lion, "nengwe", with the leopard, and "amabala", which can mean either "spot" or "open space". I looked on several forums related to Zulu translation, and "the lion and the leopard with spots" seemed most firmly suggested.
