Hoyte van Hoytema is one of the most sought-after cinematographers in contemporary film. He was responsible for the cinematography of Spike Jonze's 'Her', Jordan Peele's horror film 'Nope' and Sam Mendes' James Bond film 'Specter'.
Due to copyright limitations we don’t show the clips he discusses, but instead we describe them below.
00:00 Introduction
07:27 Miami Vice
The iconic 1980s NBC series 'Miami Vice,' produced by Michael Mann, follows police officers James 'Sonny' Burnett and Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs as they chase criminals, primarily in the drug trade, in Miami. The scene captures the dark and stylish essence of the series, known for its New Wave-inspired visuals and iconic soundtrack.
14:59 The Mirror
A 1975 film by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, known for its unconventional narrative structure and autobiographical elements. The chosen scene is the final shot of the film, depicting Aleksei, the protagonist, his mother in a reflective and associative manner, characteristic of Tarkovsky's poetic filmmaking style.
30:08 Directed by Tarkovsky
This documentary offers insights into the creative process of Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, focusing on his dedication to his craft and his uncompromising artistic vision. The selected scene shows Tarkovsky and cinematographer Sven Nykvist on the set of 'Sacrifice,' facing technical difficulties while filming a crucial scene involving a burning house.
42:17 Living the Light – Robby Müller
A documentary about Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller, known for his innovative camerawork in films like 'Paris, Texas' and 'Down by Law.' The chosen scene emphasizes Müller's intimate relationship with his camera and his dedication to capturing life through the lens.
50:27 Heaven's Gate
A western film (1980) directed by Michael Cimino, notorious for its troubled production and commercial failure. The selected scene is the climactic shootout, showcasing the film's epic scale and tragic themes within the context of the Johnson County War.
1:02:26 Athena
A 2022 French film directed by Romain Gavras, exploring the aftermath of a young boy's death at the hands of the police. The chosen scene depicts the chaotic aftermath of the boy's death, as his brothers incite a rebellion against the police. The 11 minute scene was, impressively, shot in a single take.
1:09:37 A Swedish Love Story
In 'A Swedish Love Story,' Annika is devastated when her love interest, Pär, is attacked by a group of boys, leaving her feeling abandoned. Despite her attempts to reconnect with him at a party, he ignores her. Later, at a football field, Pär leaves with friends, but unexpectedly returns for Annika, and they share a passionate embrace, reaffirming their love amidst adversity.
1:18:02 De achtste dag
In this segment from 'Het is glad in Brabant,' filmed as part of the program 'De achtste dag,' two boys from Brabant explain that they witnessed cars sliding and crashing due to icy conditions. Despite their efforts to alert cyclists and the police, accidents continue to occur.
1:30:06 Music Now
Wendy Carlos, renowned for the album 'Switched-On Bach,' demonstrates electronic sound basics with the Moog Synthesizer on BBC's 'Music Now.' Dressed as a man but privately Wendy, she explores adapting Bach to electronics, showcasing waveforms like sine, sawtooth, and white noise.
1:39:27 For All Mankind
In this segment, likely from Apollo 16, John Young and Charles Duke explore the moon's surface. They navigate challenges with humor, marveling at the lunar landscape's beauty and reflecting on their mission's significance. Amid scientific tasks, they share moments of song and dance, embracing the adventure's joy.
1:48:17 Heartworn Highways
Filmmaker James Szalapski visits Townes Van Zandt in Austin, Texas, capturing intimate moments as Van Zandt plays 'That Old Time Feeling.' His wife Cindy joins in while Uncle Seymour Washington, moved to tears, listens to 'Waiting 'Round to Die.' Szalapski's interview with Washington explores life as a farrier and his whiskey-influenced philosophy.
1:55:51 L'apocalypse des animeaux
A serene moment from 'L’apocalypse des animaux' features a monkey gracefully moving along a branch, set to Vangelis Papathanassiou's music. The fragment poignantly emphasizes the vulnerability of our planet and the importance of preserving its diverse life forms.

The former colonies no longer put up with European interference and are now violently demanding an equal relationship. Bram is in Niger - where recently in a wave of anti-Western coups in Africa - a coup has taken place.
On his trip to Niger, in the heart of the Sahara Desert, Bram Vermeulen sees how the billions of euro's Europe has poured into African countries in recent years to combat terrorism and migration have gone up in smoke. After the coup in Niger, the coup plotters cancelled any cooperation with Europe and people smugglers are allowed to go about their business again.
Former colonizer France, in particular, is to suffer. The French ambassador has been sent back to Paris, along with the 1500 French soldiers in Niger. Almost all French citizens also left. Bram speaks to the last remaining Frenchman who is still willing to show what he has to leave behind after 42 years.
Bram is also invited to one of the coup leaders, but this governor of the capital Niamey soon has enough of his questions. Meanwhile, in Agadez, the base of operations for people smugglers, people are celebrating. The scrapping of the law banning the transportation of migrants gives them a free hand again.

The planet is heading for a feverish warming. With each additional degree, the climate is changing dramatically: sea levels are rising, the ice at the North Pole is disappearing and entire species of animals are being wiped out. Of course we need to emit less CO2. But despite 25 years of climate agreements and fine promises, emissions are still increasing. If we don't act harder, we are lost.
Could climate engineering be the emergency solution we need? Can these techniques and ideas cool the planet? And how risky are they?

But as France faces increasingly frequent water shortages, opposition to these reservoirs is growing. There, it is not angry farmers who occupy the roads with tractors, but rather citizens who take to the field against farmers.

Bram goes out with parliamentarian Samuel 'Dzata' George who is hard at work lobbying for high prison sentences. George turns out to be in close contact with an evangelical and conservative group in Utah, the United States, which organizes congresses and mobilizes parliamentarians in many African countries.
The LGBTQIA+ community in Ghana faces a diabolical dilemma. Go into hiding, leave the country or fight back? The number of violent incidents against gays, queers and transgender people appears to have increased significantly since the bill was passed. This is prompting more and more people in the LGBTQIA+ community to be cautious. Only a handful of people continue to fight and rebel against the law at the risk of their lives.

The contrast could hardly be greater. But how does such a market emerge? Through interviews including the founder of the market in oil futures, one of its first traders and a neuropsychologist who mentally guides traders and hedge fund managers in making risky decisions, it becomes clear how Planet Finance grew into what it is today.
In this six-part documentary series, Marije Meerman takes you to Planet Finance. Who live and work there? What language do they speak? What is the use of this planet, and what makes this financial world so attractive to so many people?

VPRO Frontline talks to different populations to understand what they are fighting for. It is a portrait of a divided Israel. Is this the end of democracy?
Israeli filmmaker Nirit Peled takes us back to her homeland to explore what is tearing Israel apart.
As settlers rush to build new (and still illegal under international law) settlements, more and more people take to the streets in the cities to protest the reforms. Israel is shaking on its foundations, left and right are diametrically opposed.

'Generative AI' is the latest buzzword in Silicon Valley. The Big Tech giants are tumbling over each other to launch chatbots and to incorporate AI assistants, based on large-scale language models, into their products. The credo is: we are building the most powerful technology since the invention of electricity, and it is about to change everything. And this is all happening in "The Cloud".
Have we once again become blinded by the brilliance of Silicon Valley and the promise of Artificial Intelligence? Because behind the recent success of AI is the use of even more resources, even more data, even more computing power and even bigger server farms. Those who zoom out see that AI is a hungry beast that must be fed with the very fastest chips, huge data sets and poorly paid labor. In the form of silicon mines, endless rows of power-guzzling servers or Syrians labeling data for the next generation of generative AI.
AI turns out not to be a divine machine, but an industry that takes blood, sweat and metals. A system of extraction and exploitation on an industrial scale with dire consequences for the earth and humans.

Ruben Terlou is in the north where floods regularly wipe out entire villages. In the province of Sindh, the food chamber of Pakistan, he sees how devastating the effects of floods are for the millions of people who live there.
Jelle Brandt Corstius is in Kyrgyzstan, where precisely the lack of water is the source of yet another ticking time bomb: the escalating conflict with neighboring Tajikistan. In Soviet times, Moscow determined how much water the Tajiks received from canals in Kyrgyzstan. But now the Kyrgyz determine that for themselves, and the Tajiks think they get too little. With shelling back and forth as a result. Jelle is a village where as many as forty people were killed last year. Violence could flare up again at any moment.
About this series
Central Asia was once the hub of world trade. Now we hear little about it, even though it is teeming with intriguing stories. In this series, Ruben Terlou and Jelle Brandt Corstius go in search of them.
Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan. These are countries that once formed the Old Silk Road, the world's trade center. Most Westerners today have other associations with Central Asia: lots of oil and gas, long-sitting tyrants, and violent steppe regions inhabited by uncultured types.

In this video journalists Ruben Terlou and Jelle Brandt Corstius begin their journey in Samarkand, a city in Uzbekistan. Samarkand was once an important hub along the ancient Silk Road; now it is hosting perhaps the biggest political summit of the year. It is the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which brings together many Asian countries.
The leaders who attend represent more than half the world's population. Western leaders are nowhere to be seen, but Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping are there. The luxurious setting of the summit contrasts sharply with the daily reality in many Central Asian countries. From Samarkand, Jelle and Ruben travel further into the region.
Ruben travels along Pakistan's spectacular Karakoram Highway, built by the Chinese in the 1970s and symbolic of the deep friendship between the two countries. He has a special encounter with the man who devotes his entire life to caring for the graves of deceased Chinese road workers.
But Ruben also travels to Tajikistan, a country that exemplifies Central Asia. Sandwiched between two superpowers, Russia and China. The old Soviet feeling is still cherished. But China is meanwhile rattling the gate with a bag of money.
Jelle visits a uranium mine in Uzbekistan, which closed when the Soviet Union fell apart. The former director of the mine grew up in Soviet times. Along with many of his contemporaries, he still mourns the demise of the Soviet Union.

The Turkish government is clearing debris at a furious pace to put the disaster behind it as soon as possible. Elections are just around the corner. Construction companies are experiencing golden times.
For residents, it's all moving too fast. 'Frontline' follows Turkish-Dutch writer Meltem Halaceli who has traveled to the area from Hengelo, The Netherlands. Her family has become homeless and she hopes to help them find housing.
House prices have doubled, real estate agents are earning from the huge influx of house seekers, but no one believes their sales pitches anymore.
The earthquake has triggered a veritable movement of people. Turkish earthquake victims, as well as the four million refugees from the Syrian civil war who were sheltered in Turkey, are all seeking new homes.
The earthquake caused a rift in Turkey's 12 years of hospitality to their neighbors. At the same time, there are grave concerns about what is now happening to the ancient city of Antakya. The city was home not only to Meltem's parents and grandparents but also to Jews, Christians, Alevis and Arabs.
The devastated south of Turkey after the earthquake is a landscape of lies, where distrust reigns.

Of course, this war is about more than Ukrainian territory: it is an attack on the democratic freedom we Western Europeans take for granted. Thus the Ukrainians and the Baltic States are fighting not only on Ukrainian territory, but on the front lines of the struggle between autocracy and democracy. Their fighting spirit offers food for thought. What if the war soon comes knocking at our borders as well? Are we also prepared to fight for our values and ideals?

It's time to help our ecosystems and biodiversity. If not, the only animals on earth will soon be living in pig and chicken houses. So: how do we stop the decline? How do we bring back wildlife? And how do we ensure that animals can live a good life?

In the mountainous border region between Iraq and Iran, she hears firsthand stories of Iranian refugees who are no longer safe in their homeland. She also sees how the Kurdish opposition is trying to fight the oppression of the government in Iran.
The reason for the popular uprising in Iran is the death of Kurdish-Iranian woman Jina Masha Amini. Amini was abused by the morality police in Iran because her headscarf did not fit properly; this abuse was fatal to her. At her funeral, the first major demonstration arose and the cry for change has only increased since then. Shalmashi wanted to get as close to the resistance as possible, this took her to Iraqi Kurdistan where Iran's opposition has been gathering and thinking about a democratic Iran for decades.
What is brewing on the fringes of the revolution? Shalmashi speaks to people who are involved daily with the uprising in Iran but can no longer be there. She meets refugee Iranians who were present at the protests and is confronted with the grief of family members who have lost people. Even on the fringes of the revolution, life is not without danger. The area is regularly bombarded by Iranian missiles and drones and deaths occur. Still, new recruits who have left everything behind and are being trained as Peshmerga arrive daily. Human Rights organizations are also trying from Iraqi Kurdistan to map everything as best they can and provide assistance.

About The Dispatchables:
Somewhere in Amsterdam there is an extraordinary bike courier company. The amiable but disorganized Stanley manages this company and the motley crew of employees. Every courier has their own reasons for peddling around the city. And their own secret dreams.
No matter the weather and often the employees swarm around the city of Amsterdam, a city that is scarred by the increasing gap between the haves and have nots.
At their base camp the couriers sometimes give each other a hard time with harsh jokes and petty quarrels. Luckily, the local residents frequently drop in and interfere with matters, like upstairs neighbour Laura, whom Stanley is infatuated with. They are just like a family: it’s impossible to live with each other and they certainly cannot live without each other. And in the meantime they have a business to keep alive.
Every episode focuses on Stanley and one other courier. The series deals with topics like loneliness, inclusion, and social inequality.

The company recently made headlines by threatening to leave the Netherlands if a new law is passed making companies liable for the possible negative consequences of their activities abroad.
The €1.5 billion contract is the largest in Boskalis' history and was concluded during the time of populist President Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte campaigned on two promises: build as much infrastructure as possible and the ruthless 'War on Drugs'. Before Duterte came to power, he warned that Manila Bay would fill with the corpses of drug dealers. In six years, thousands were executed without trial, including environmentalists.
Bram Vermeulen examines the consequences for the hundreds of Filipino families who must make way for the airport, and the activists fighting the project. What moved the Dutch company to take on the project and the Dutch government to support it, despite previous promises to protect Manila Bay?

What can we learn from nature? How can we be benevolent towards nature? Backlight talks with environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht about a new era that awaits us: the Symbiocene. An era in which humans, nature and technology live together in balance and benefit from each other's existence.
Researchers and artists such as Jalila Essaïdi, Lucas de Man and Iza Awad are working on materials for the Symbiocene. Materials that originate from nature and can also be reabsorbed by nature. They come up with surprising examples such as use of silkworms, mycelium and kombucha.
How can we transform into an era in which humans coexist with nature. Several artists were inspired by the new vocabulary Albrecht came up with for the Symbiocene. What materials are artists and researchers already using to shape human lives in the Symbiocene?

This is a question that has been on our minds again since the war in Ukraine. Filmmaker and former China correspondent Floris-Jan van Luyn travels to Taiwan for Frontline and visits the island that has long been threatened by China, and abandoned by the rest of the world.
He encounters a friend without friends, intimidated and ignored, and yet one of us. What do you do, when you are alone?
A front line runs right through Taiwan. Every time China threatens the island - which has been happening with increasing regularity since 1949 - and the world "discovers" that the conflict between China and Taiwan is still current, the call for a peaceful solution is as loud in Taiwan as the call for a sharp independent course. It drives people apart and plays into China's hands.
Recently, Member of Parliament Sjoerd Sjoerdsma was in Taiwan with an international party to discuss a sanctions package that would make China shy away from invading Taiwan, but so far a good portion of the world supports Taiwan only informally. In fact, Taiwan, recognized by only 14 mini-states, stands alone.
Many Taiwanese wonder: How is it possible for Taiwanese democracy to become increasingly isolated, while the Chinese dictatorship is allowed to continue to threaten and provoke?

The sun provides as much energy in one hour as the entire human race consumes in a year. So why don't we harvest it? Artist Marjan van Aubel argues for a 'solar democracy'. The moment solar technology is linked to aesthetics and design, a whole new perspective emerges.
Solar energy can be a great godsend for people in today's energy crisis. In 2022, significantly more solar energy will be harvested in the Netherlands than in previous years. That seems nice, but a fanatical club of sun-believers wants to go much further.
The sun belongs to and is for everyone, so let's produce solar lamps, make clothes and windows that harvest sun, cover buildings and noise barriers with solar foil and start a real 'solar movement.'

Bram Vermeulen travels to the town of Ilulissat and the nearby ice fjords. Climate change has totally turned the lives of Greenlanders upside down. But while the mayor of Ilulissat sees climate change as a business opportunity, the local police department is deeply concerned. Greenland faces major social problems such as domestic violence, alcohol abuse and has the highest suicide rate in the world.
When Bram Vermeulen visits Ilulissat, the police are busy investigating a human leg found in the landfill. The investigation into the murder exposes an Ilulissat that tourists don't normally get to see.

Of all the vegetables in the world, 70 percent have a Dutch origin via seed breeding. The Netherlands is Europe's largest tomato exporter. And their onions go en masse to Africa. In turn, The Dutch import green beans from Kenya and asparagus from Peru. By contrast, Amsterdam Sloten is home to Europe's largest indoor farm, which could supply half of Amsterdam with fresh vegetables in the future.
Global food production is responsible for at least 25 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the food supply is coming under increasing pressure. Kadir van Lohuizen goes in search of answers to questions such as: where does our food come from? How is it produced? And where do we take it?
Van Lohuizen shows that pigs and chickens are fed in part on rejected stroopwafels, wine gums, whipped cream cakes, doughnuts and other food waste, and that in the largest pig slaughterhouse in the Netherlands, as many as 20,000 pigs are slaughtered per day. The heads, legs and intestines go to China and the "spare ribs" to the U.S.
Van Lohuizen's visual examination of the world behind our food production and consumption makes one think. What might the future of this food system bring us?

In Hawija, Iraq, on the night of June 3, 2015, an estimated 70 people were killed after a Dutch attack on an IS bomb factory. Despite acknowledging that there were civilian casualties, The Netherlands, for now, refuses any liability. 'It is time for the Dutch government to take responsibility,' argues the mayor of Hawija. After seven years, he and the residents are still fighting for recognition, demanding compensation for the city in ruins and the lives destroyed.
The airstrikes were described by the international coalition as the "most precise in the history of air warfare". The Netherlands also participated in the fight against IS. In four years, Dutch fighter jets dropped more than 2,000 bombs on Iraq and Syria. In total, the coalition carried out 35,000 attacks.
It is unclear how many civilians were killed in the process. The official figure stands at 1,410 but human rights organizations speak of a multiple and complain of a lack of transparency on the part of the participating countries. The Dutch government - after revelations from journalists, and after pressure from the House of Representatives - has admitted four "incidents.

ASML makes the most advanced machine in the world; the lithography machine to make computer chips. And with chips as a strategic asset, ASML and its machine are at the center of the world geo-political stage. What is ASML's secret, and who are the people who build this wondrous machine?
VPRO Backlight gained access to the ins and outs of the high-tech company and followed a number of employees. Due to the high demand for chips, chip manufacturers are expanding rapidly. ASML also has to scale up at the same pace. The company hires a hundred new employees every week and tries to attract technical talent from all over the world to Veldhoven.
At the same time, ASML has become a geopolitical plaything, due to the global shortage of chips and the dominance that chip production entails. How is this outside pressure having an impact inside ASML's walls?

For years, the company legally and illegally discharged toxic substances into the river Scheldt. With all the consequences: people who live near the factory are not allowed to eat eggs and vegetables from their own garden. And the water of the Scheldt is so polluted that it is no longer responsible for shrimp fishing.
To expose the working methods of 3FM, we travel to Alabama. There is a similar 3M plant on the Tennessee River and here, too, the effects of discharging PFAS prove far-reaching. How could it have come to this?

The Central African Republic is the testing ground for Russia's compelling ambition to take African countries into its sphere of influence and turn them against the West. In exchange for raw materials and diplomatic support in the UN Security Council, Russia supplies mercenaries to keep governments in power, education and disinformation with a Moscow perspective.
Journalist Bram Vermeulen meets Wagner's masked mercenaries and their best customer, the president of the Central African Republic. He hears about their gruesome methods of scorched earth, kidnappings and disappearances. He literally engages in a fight with Vladimir Putin's representative in the Central African Republic during a boxing training session with the Russian consul who dismisses all allegations of human rights violations as fake news.
The Russians are waging a disinformation campaign that is riding on a wave of distaste for former colonizer France, who is accused of disinterest in the fate of Africans and racism. This campaign is being carried out on numerous fronts: social media, university lectures and war films in which Russians are the heroes and Westerners the villains.
Journalists who try to combat the disinformation mysteriously die or are threatened.
On the front lines of Cold War 2.0, Bram Vermeulen sees that the West is losing the battle for Africa.
