They complain of incomplete infrastructural development, lack of medical attention, drainage systems, proper distribution of ration, permanent houses, proper roads and facilities. Even after applying multiple times, numerous are yet to receive their caste certificates and claim the benefits of schemes that come with that. Outlook spoke to Hana Tirkey, who has been working in Mathura Tea Estate of Alipurduar for almost two decades.
Even after completing their postgraduation, they are working on their lands. Around 350 kms away from the state capital Bhopal, youths in Chhindwara and Balaghat- that are going to polls on 19th- express their concerns. Most of them fail to crack the exams as paper leaks and scams make it a far-fetched dream. On the ither hand, SC/ST reserved seats remain vacant creating a pool of unemployed youths.
From the Congress to the Janata Dal and its splinter factions, he deftly switched allegiances as power ebbed and flowed. His legacy, etched in decades of service, mirrors the complexities of Bihar’s socio-political fabric.
As he steps back from electoral politics at 79, Manjhi’s journey remains a testament to resilience and adaptability.
He published Thaalidappatta kathavugal which literally translates to Bolted Door in December 2016 and the stories are accounts of people who suffered during the violence in 1997 and 1998. Outlook met him in Coimbatore to talk about the riots and his experience.
Coimbatore has since then become a gateway to the south for BJP and this election it will be very interesting to see how things playout for this constituency.
