In 180 feet of water, we found a color change where the cold waters of the Labrador current met the warm waters of the gulf stream. Water temperatures were 48 degrees on one side of the change and 72 degrees on the other. This condition creates a prime ambush place for predatory fish and this particular spot held bluefin tuna, blackfin tuna, false albacore, king mackerel, and wahoo.
We found PERFECT fishing conditions and managed to catch a bluefin tuna that we could legally retain and played with some other bluefin tuna that were bigger than we could keep. THEY WERE EVERYWHEREFishing with the Matador2023-11-07 | After some unsuccessful tuna chunking off the coast of Virginia Beach, we set out trying to catch some fish to fill the box. We stopped in the Norfolk canyon and hit some pot buoys and found every buoy LOADED with nice sized mahi up to 10-12#. When dolphin get schooled like this, the mahi are super easy to catch. It was a really fun few minutes of fishing to catch our limit of mahi up to 14# on bailing gear. Afterwards we caught some blueline tilefish, a stray giant false albacore, a limit of sea bass, some triggerfish, a couple puffers, and porgy.

When we got the bait to the top.after being near the bottom for a half an hour, we found that this strange eel burrowed itself into the body cavity of the mullet and attached itself for the entire 1300 foot ride back to the top and into the boat.
I don't know what this thing is. it's definitely some kind of an eel. Most of its body is shaped like an American eel, but it's pink colored. It has a head like a blood worm with no eyes and it had 6 or 8 long fangs on the outside of its mouth like a bloodworm, but it could control each fang individually and was moving the fangs and trying to bite if we touched it. It was also coated with a super thick really sticky slime.
I put it on the hook and sent it back down as a live bait for our last drift of the day but it didn't get bit. I still have it at home in my bait freezer and I'm afraid to open the freezer because the thing is probably still alive and kicking, with a hook in it, like it was when I put it in the freezer.Wreck Fishing off Virginia Beach is AS GOOD AS IT GETS RIGHT NOW!Fishing with the Matador2023-10-10 | Doesn't get much easier than that!

The weather WAS NOT what was forecasted. It was much worse today. Heading straight into five foot swells with three foot chop on them made for a bumpy day. It was fairly rough all day but the Contender ate it up. We made it out to the canyon at 35 mph despite the seas.
Once we arrived at the canyon, we found 80 degree water everywhere with appx five knots of current headed almost east to west. The conditions for drifting for swords were terrible. I put the trolling motor down to fight the current but even at full power, we were still drifting backwards at nearly two knots. There were just three of us on board. Matt was pretty seasick all day. Kendall was fine though and we strapped our helmets on and got to work. We used six pound weights because of the heavy current and drifted all over the mouth of the Norfolk Canyon using fresh rigged squids, live and dead eels. No bites. No marks. No life seen. Seven hours of a lot of bobbing around staring at rod tips. I never marked bait and usually when there is bait around when you drop a squid down, the bait will mess it up during the drift. All day, through all our drifts, we never pulled a squid up that wasnt flawless as when we dropped it.
While I got excited when I saw the sat shot after sitting home unable to fish for two weeks, I just don't think 80 degree water off Virginia in October is good for much. A few guys on the radio were seeing some mahi, marlin, and yellowfin but that didn't sound great either.
At the end of the day to prevent skunk, Matt caught a 37 pound golden tilefish. So we did catch something. It was still a fun day. The lack of bites wasn't from a lack of effort or preparation. I just don't think there were many swordfish there today. The boat ran great (only burned 110 gal of fuel today, 186 miles round trip) and we still have another day left to fish the Oceans East Swordfish Tournament on my boat. I'm gonna save that day for later in the month, hopefully when the water cools off a bit.The FASTEST, EASIEST way to rig a squid for SWORDFISHFishing with the Matador2023-09-28 | This is a quick instructional how to video about rigging a squid for fishing for swordfish. FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO BOOK A CHARTER GO TO WWW.MATADORCHARTERS.COMLimit of sea bass, a GIANT triggerfish, and everything you need to know about offshore wind...Fishing with the Matador2023-09-26 | On Monday, 9/25 we had a tight weather window that allowed us to get out and fish for probably the only day this week where we will have weather to get out of the inlet and make it to the wrecks. So we met at the ramp with a family of guys from central Virginia and made our way out to the triangle wrecks. The wrecks were absolutely loaded with sea bass. 73 degree clean green water, seas were not too bad at all, and we never saw another boat fishing all day. We stopped at 3 different wrecks. Each wreck held really good numbers of sea bass with a good keeper to throwback ratio. We also had some scup, and this huge 5 pound 7 ounce triggerfish caught on a piece of cutbait at the Morgan wreck. We made quick work of a nice limit of sea bass before making our way back to the docks for an early afternoon.
While we were out there, there was a 10 or so mph northwest wind. This wind would be perfect for the offshore wind farm to be making energy but as noted in the video, both of our windmills placed 29 miles out to sea off Virginia Beach were not producing energy. These windmills sit idly not producing energy often more times than not. In this video I put a bunch of facts out there that everyone should know about offshore wind. I was open to these windmills at first but after seeing the expense of this project, the cost to the public, the amount our power bills are going to increase, and the damage to the marine environment, I am of the opinion that offshore wind is a scam. What is your opinion on offshore wind? Let me know in the comments and let's have a conversation about this.

Thanks again!Check out this HUGE black sea bass!Fishing with the Matador2023-09-23 | This week, I had nice weather one day and no charter during the middle of the week. Lee called me on Wednesday night and told me he wanted to rent the entire boat, just him for Thursday morning. He wanted to go wreck fishing so off we went. We went north to the triangle wrecks and found plenty of sea bass and some triggerfish, but couldn't find a flounder. There were also several other boats in the area that we talked to and no one had caught a flounder. I guess that day the flounder bite was off. The water temperature was 75 degrees and super clean clear green. It was really calm conditions but hurricane Ophelia was just a few days away. This hirricane coming through is going to keep us from fishing for a couple days and but things are going to change after the storm leaves. We are going to see some of the summer species leave but the fall fishing should get better after this storm with more sea bass, triggerfish, and flounder should be even better on the wrecks.

We had a perfect weather forecast and the satellite shot looked great around the Norfolk Canyon so we packed up the my 31' Contender "Meat Wagon" and headed offshore. We spent the morning pulling a dredge looking for marlin. We ended up catching 2 out of 5 or 6 Sailfish, 2 out of 4 or 5 white marlin, jumped off a blue marlin, and then we tried for a swordfish bite for a little bit while we waited on the conditions to get right to try for a tuna. We never got our swordfish bite but when we out the tuna gear out and trolled to the northeast corner of the Norfolk Canyon, we found the pilot whales actively feeding, doing their thing. We made two passes on the whales with no bite and on the third pass we had a big bite. The bite was on a blue and white spreader bar with a horse ballyhoo for the trailer bait and there was no crazy big run, which lead me to think it was probably a shark. Kendall took control of the rod and fought the fish for 45 minutes on a Penn 80vsw and when we finally saw color, I was surprised to see a huge bigeye tuna. I had to cut the camera off for a minute so I could gaff the fish, but we got it in the boat! It was a really great day fishing, and we have some great memories made that day and more bigeye tuna steaks than we could possibly eat!

These guys initially wanted amberjacks, but a couple of days of cooler weather made amberjack fishing an uncertain bet. So we decided to do the sure thing and go wreck fishing. We had a great day on the wrecks, catching a limit of sea bass, a couple triggerfish, a limit of spadefish, some mahi, and some other stuff.
This fantastic fishing on the wrecks will continue all fall long and the sea bass, flounder and triggers will be available all the way through October with sea bass continuing through December. it really is great fishing and these fish are exceptional to eat so if you want to fill the freezers, give me a call. This time of year most people have given up on spadefish but they are still around, they can still be caught very easily with clam the same ways they have been caught earlier in the summer, and in the same places as they were caught earlier in the summer. Every cold front that comes through after fall pushes more and more sea bass onto our wrecks off Virginia Beach. On this trip, we went to the triangle wrecks, in appx 100 feet of water, 35 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach and had a really great day targeting black sea bass. I target these fish with strategically placed fads (fish attracting devices) that lure schools of mahi to stay in the area where they can be found time and time again. Inshore mahi in the summer is super fun fishing. These fish can be caught a number of ways but the most fun is casting Jigs with light tackle. Dolphin are very aggressive feeding fish and will readily take Jigs. These fish fight very hard, and are very fast swimmers, so they put up a good fight and the best part about mahi is that they are very good to eat. I'm really glad to see mahi finally showing up and we can now rely on having mahi added to our daily catches for the next couple of weeks.

The weather forecast wasn't great but these guys have been fishing with me a long time and I knew the weather wasn't much of a factor for them. We pounded our way out to the triangle wrecks in 6 foot swells with fog and rain, but once we arrived we found great fishing. It took us an hour and a half to catch our limit of sea bass, but the class of fish was really nice.
It is fairly common for sea bass to come up and spit up their stomach contents which is usually small fish and crabs, but yesterday one of our sea bass spit up a wedding ring. In 24 years of charter fishing, I have never heard of something like this. I brought the wedding ring back and maybe it has sentimental value to someone who lost it. maybe they threw it out. I don't know but either way I have someone's wedding ring that I caught inside a sea bass. it's black and it has size 11 carved inside it. Help me find out whose ring this is!

Paul and the DC firefighters crew love catching sea bass and we were happy to have them along for the day. The weather forecast was for it to be a little rough and choppy early but getting really rough and choppy later in the morning, but that's OK when the fishing is as good as its been.I ran the 31 Contender "Meat Wagon" out 30 miles at a speed of 40 miles per hour to the fishing grounds and we were able to be fishing in no time. We were able to get out and get the sea bass QUICKLY, and get back in before the weather hit. The fishing did not disappoint! We ran 35 miles northeast of Rudee Inlet to the Triangle wrecks for opening day of sea bass season with a great group of guys for a make up charter. We crossed the rocks headed east at 808 am this morning and were back in the inlet at 1143am. Smooth, calm seas made for a very fast boatride on the 31' Contender fisbaround "Meat Wagon" and we were able to catch our 7 man limit of 105 sea bass (Virginia limits for black sea bass are 15 per person at a minimum size of 13") in just 83 minutes. None of our fish were giant, but it was a really great class of fish with most in the 2-3 pound range with some in the 4's. Just perfect! For those of you who don't know, these black sea bass are some of the finest eating g fish in the ocean and we are really glad to have a season open on them so we can get after them. FINALLY! We went on my little 17' hydrasports flats skiff. This boat is perfect for this kind if fishing because it has the minn kota trolling motor with spot lock and the boat is small enough that we can easily get close in to the pilings where the fish are. These fish are right in the pilings and if you are fishing 3 feet away, you are out of the zone where you are gonna get bit. We fished a couple sets of pilings between the fourth island and the high rise area and every pilings had fish on it. Water temp was 63 degrees and the tide was end of the incoming and start of the outgoing. We were using 30 pound braid with 40 pound fluorocarbon leaders and 2 ounce Chongz Jigz with blue crab quarters for bait. We finished out yesterday with 7 keeper tautog, some throwback tautog, 2 sheepshead with one being 12 pounds, and a bunch of oyster toads. Really good fishing on the bridge right now and good to get a day fishing with Beau.

Virginia Beach Offshore fishing report 5/05/23Fishing with the Matador2023-05-07 | The picture is from the same day as the video, but the video is of us catching blueline tilefish and not golden tilefish. On Friday we went to the Norfolk Canyon for a deep drop charter. The weather was great and the fishing was also great. We caught an 8 person limit of blueline tilefish very quickly with 4 of those fish meeting the criteria for a Virginia citation of ten pounds. After catching our blueline tiles, we went a little further offshore to look for golden tilefish. The golden tiles were very cooperative and we caught 18 goldens. The Jigs seemed to be worming better than bait but everyone caught a couple goldens and it was a great day of fishing with a FULL box of some of the best eating fish in the ocean.
I will be running deep drop Charters all the way through the spring and you can go to www.matadorcharters.com for booking. thanks for watching and helping this channel grow! I appreciate you!Catching a BIG golden tilefish!Fishing with the Matador2023-04-20 | On 4/19/23 we fished VERY rough conditions with a #deepdrop #offshorefishing make up charter off Virginia Beach for golden tilefish. The conditions were pretty rough but we made it happen notheless. We ended with 5 tiles in the box and lost another nice tile right outside the gaff. The conditions and dusky sharks were a big challenge. We caught 9 dusky sharks and had another 8 dusky sharks bite us off. Between the sharks and the tiles we had plenty of bites and despite the weather it was a great day of fishing.
I have plenty of availability and am now booking Charters for the summer 2023 #fishing season. Go to www.matadorcharters.com for more info or for booking. Thanks for watching, liking, and subscribing!DEEP DROP FISHING IN NORFOLK CANYON WAS ON FIRE 4/13/2023Fishing with the Matador2023-04-14 | Yesterday we had Ed Brooks, Steve Clements, and Kennedy Daniels aboard the 31 Contender "Meat Wagon" for a day of #offshorefishing #deepdropfishing in the #NorfolkCanyon . The initial target was supposed to be grouper and even though we had the groupers pretty good the trip before, we could not find a grouper yesterday. I have some very good grouper spots in the Norfolk and if the fish were there, we would have caught them. We spent a lot of time in the morning with pretty good conditions fishing for grouper and they just simply were not there.
We made a nice catch of black bellied rosefish and had a decent box of goldens before we switched gears and started targeting specifically golden tilefish. We caught a 10 pound bluefish on the bottom in 900 feet of water so that was strange.
But late in the day we tried on last spot to do a drift for golden tiles and it was on fire. In an hour and a half, we caught 15 golden tiles up to 31 pounds. We could have caught a couple more to finish off our limit but the box was full and how many do you really need. So we left em biting and ran home at 40 miles per hour in a fairly choppy little sea but it was a nice ride.
We had a great time yesterday with great people and the fishing was awesome. So much fun. I am currently booking deep drop trips to the Norfolk Canyon on my website at www.matadorcharters.com.

Thank you!Virginia Beach Grouper Fishing 3/26/23 #deepdrop #fishingvideoFishing with the Matador2023-03-27 | On March 26, 2023 we had a beautiful weather window for fishing and the time is here that grouper should be in the canyon, so we arranged a crew and headed east on the Contender. We bounced around to a few different spots throughout the day and the fishing was tough, with a lot of dogfish and even a giant bluefin tuna hookup, but we ended the day with a box full of fish. All in all we had 5 wreckfish for our grouper limit for the day, 2 nice golden tilefish, a world record class sized hake, and 13 black bellied rosefish in the box. We were fishing the Norfolk Canyon in 800'-1200' of water using squid and cut mackerel for bait. We ran home at 40 mph with a full box and made it back to the dock early with a great haul of fish that are ALL some of the best eating fish in the ocean.
We are now booking for the 2023 charter fishing season about the 31' Contender "Meat wagon". For more info or booking please visit www.matadorcharters.com
Thanks for watching, liking, subscribing, and commenting!GIANT bluefin tuna in Hatteras!Fishing with the Matador2023-02-19 | Today we took the 31 Contender to #Hatteras for a day of #tuna fishing. We left Teaches Lair at sunup and were on the fishing grounds with baits in the water by 730am. after trolling a few minutes, we had our first bite which was a 60" #bluefin tuna. We kept that fish as out under for the day. Then we went jigging for a few minutes and got wore out by sharks. No blackfins for us. After an hour or two wasted with jigging we decided to go back to trolling to see if u could fill my giant bluefin tag for 2023. Put lines in the water and in ten minutes, we had the right bite. Bite was on a pink and blue islander with a horse ballyhoo with a tiny j hook and 130# leader. The fish made a huge first run and nearly dumped a Penn International 80VSW spooled with 100# mono. After chasing the fish for 20 minutes, we had him up and down. For 50 minutes at 50 pounds of drag the fish stayed at 100 feet under the boat and wouldn't budge, but eventually we broke his will and brought him to the boat. Ran back to a completely jacked up Hatteras inlet where we hit bottom several times.
All in all it was a great day with a great group and we have over 500# of sushi in the back of the truck!Awesome #deepdrop fishing Norfolk Canyon 1/28/23Fishing with the Matador2023-01-29 | On Jan 28 we had a weather window and it's getting to be the time of the year when grouper begin to show up around Norfolk Canyon, so I assembled a crew and we made the trip 75 miles east from Rudee Inlet to the Norfolk Canyon. It was a nice ride out until we made it out to 30 fathoms where the water temperatures jumped from 46-47 degrees to 57-59 degrees. These extremely warm water temperatures for this time of year caused it to be VERY rough conditions at the canyon early on. We caught a rogue wave a few miles from the fishing grounds and it blew through my curtains. Just a massive wall of water came from nowhere, but luckily it was nearly 60 degree water. So we did a quick survey to make sure nothing else was broken, pumped all the water out and made our way to the canyon to do some drops.
When we arrived it was too rough to fish more than one rod, but we made it happen. We tried a couple of spots until we found the right spot, a sharp ledge on the north wall of the canyon that goes from around 1000 feet deep to about 850 feet deep. We stayed there for the rest of the day and scratched out a pretty good catch with about 30 black bellied rosefish, 2 hake, and 5 golden tilefish to about 20 pounds. We had some really huge black bellied rosefish, some of the biggest I have ever seen.
Late in the day, the weather started to lay out so Eric was able to make a couple drops with a hand crank rig with three hooks. He baited up on his first drop caught 2 rosefish and a golden tilefish. On his second drop he caught one of the biggest rosefish I have ever seen. For obvious reasons, we named this fish Rosie O'Donnell. When we got back to the dock, I hand scaled this fish at 5.15 pounds, which is just .15 pounds (2 ounces) from being the all tackle world record black bellied rosefish. Not quite the record, but still pretty cool. Rosie O'Donnell is going to be delicious later served as sashimi.
When we finished the day up around 3:30 in the afternoon, the warm water in the canyon was still making some pretty nasty waves. I had to run quartering to those waves instead of running head into them and turned my course way to the north to get home. Eventually, I got inside of 30 fathoms and the water cooled off and the waves laid down but the 75 miles ride home turned into a 90 mile ride with the extra maneuvering. Nonetheless, we made it back to the dock at 630 pm and were able to make 30 plus miles per hour for the whole trip home.
All in all it was a great day with a really fun group of guys. The conditions were a little rough and broke my curtains so I'll be fixing those today. But we all had a great time and caught a really nice box of great eating fish. These deep drop trips will continue weather permitting all spring long and I have plenty of availability for charter if anyone would like to go do some of this fishing. Also in February we will have a sea bass season in Virginia, so I'm booking for that. The sea bass fishing should be really great fishing if we can just get the weather to get out. In March and April we will have redfish in rudee inlet which the last couple years that has been incredible fishing. The deep drop fishing will continue to get better until blueline tilefish season opens May 1 in Virginia. For more info to fish with me on any of these Charters please check me out at www.matadorcharters.com
Anyways THANK YOU for watching, subscribing, liking, commenting, etc. YOU are making this channel grow rapidly and I really appreciate it.MORE fishing for #TAUTOG aka #BLACKFISH in Virginia Beach 1/24/23 reportFishing with the Matador2023-01-25 | Yesterday, we had a small weather window to get out and do some fishing, so I made a few phone calls and my friends Beau and Neki were available to make a quick trip so we gathered out things and headed out. Beau grabbed a couple pounds of fresh shrimp from the Asian market and lately that fresh shrimp has been the best bait especially for these inshore fish. It's great that these fish are eating shrimp so well because it can be very hard to find crabs this time of year, but the Asian market usually has fresh shrimp year round and it's reasonably priced. We loaded the boat at Owls Creek boat ramp and made our way out of Rudee Inlet at about 1pm. We ran to the Tiger wreck 10 miles East Southeast of Rudee Inlet on the 31 Contender fisharound at 40 knots so we made it there pretty quickly. Conditions were 2-4 foot seas and 45 degree water Temps. We started dropping and immediately started catching fish. I made this video early on in the trip but as the trip went on, we caught more and bigger fish at the Tiger wreck. When we finished fishing at 4pm we had caught about 10 tautog, with a couple of nicer fish in the mix. Only had to pick up the anchor once all day which is also nice. We ended with 6 keepers and the biggest fish was about 5 or 6 pounds. Really nice fish for being less than 10 miles from the inlet on a 3 hour trip.
Next Wednesday is the start of our February Virginia Sea bass season. I have the permit to fish, Im all registered, and completely ready to go. I have some dates on the books but I have plenty of days available to fish. This February Sea bass fishing should be some great fishing because we have seen Sea bass covering all the inshore wrecks lately. If you want to get out of the house and go fishing, in February let's go fill the freezer. We are allowed 15 sea bass at 13" or greater per person. If we catch our sea bass early, I will bring extra bait so we can spend some time fishing for tautog. I can take up to 6 people and my rate is $1200 plus tips. I saw one of my competitors offering trips on a smaller, slower boat at $1200 plus tip for 5 people, so we are offering a little bit better deal, that costs less per person on a bigger, faster boat.
My upcoming schedule for the next couple months is going to be February sea bass and IF I get the weather in February, March, and April, there will be some grouper in the Canyon. Those deep drop trips are offshore and the way the weather usually works it takes a lot of planning to get out there, but that spring grouper fishing can be really great fishing WHEN we can get out. Also in March and April, we will have puppy drum available in Rudee Inlet for half day fishing. Blueline tilefish come into season May 1 and Black Sea bass will come in season May 15. I'm booking for all these types of fishing now. if you'd like more information for booking go to www.matadorcharters.com or contact me directly at 757-749-6008.

Virginia Beach Fishing Report 1/18/23Fishing with the Matador2023-01-19 | Today was my first day taking people fishing of 2023. We went for a half day #tautog fishing. The weather was good. We had a really fun group. The tog fishing was just ok. We caught 6 tautog (#blackfish to the northern guys). We caught about 200 *HIGHLY PROTECTED*, *VERY RARE* CLOSED SEASON black sea bass and this majestic (I'm just kidding) filthy, disgusting, massive absolute unit of an oyster toad.
It was just great to get out on the water and bend a pole. We all had a great time and I appreciate my group today being able to go on really short notice. Alexander Levitov's dad, Dr. Levitov, told us all some funny jokes today, made even funnier by his thick Russian accent, he said "what's the difference between your job and your wife?".
Your job still sucks after 20 years.
Anyways! great day, fun times, great people. Can't wait to go again!

We went slow trolling at the bottom of the cut channel on Mike Vocis new 31 Tiara with planer boards and live eels for striped bass. All in all it wasn't very good fishing. We had 4 bites all day and caught 2. Fortunately the 2 we caught were huge. Late in the day, Thomas caught a 51" fat fish that was around 48-50 pounds. Earlier in the day I caught this fish which was a massive 55.5 inch long striped bass. pushing 60 pounds. If this fish were fat, it could have been a 70 pound fish, bit conservatively I will call it 60. I have caught thousands of big striped bass and there are very few fish this sized. This fish was old and it makes me happy to know the fish is still out there swimming after being released. Thanks for watching and subscribing.12-30-22 MORE Virginia Beach TAUTOG fishingFishing with the Matador2022-12-31 | On Friday we fished for tautog for the second day in a row. We went to several of the same wrecks and caught tautog everywhere we went yesterday. The weather was great and we had a really fun group of people. Again, the beat bait was fresh shrimp on a single hook rig. The wrecks had a lot of sea bass on them and we caught probably over 100 sea bass yesterday as bycatch with sea bass up to 3 pounds. The sea bass fishery being closed for conservation is an absurdity. We caught a few big conger eels. We caught a few oyster toads. We caught a million dogfish. But when all was said and done we caught 24 of our target species of tautog. Nothing exceptionally large, just some solid fishing. And we also caught a sheepshead, which was very surprising for 44 degree water temperatures.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! We had a great 2022 and can't wait to see what's in store for 2022. Thank you!
