Volvo V70 T5 rough starting trouble SOLVED Stratoszero 2012-04-18 | I bought this car in 2011. I immediately found it had rough starting for a few seconds, but only on cold damp mornings (September to May typically) when left overnight. Didnt happen in the summer. The exhaust smoked with a smell of excess fuel. It idled normally within 5-20 seconds if left to itself (like in the video) or with a quick blip of the throttle. There were no fault codes registered (Electronic Throttle Module or otherwise).Advice reckoned ETM, but there was never any running problems 99.999% of the time plus it seemed atmospheric/temp related.One guy said "boost leak, guarantee it". This sounded plausible, but I couldnt find one and smoke machines had not been invented here!I just lived with it, the car ran great otherwise, good mpg and performance. Then the ETM did let go in 2021, gave fault codes (but no ETM light on the dash?). By now the ETM repair kits were common on Ebay so fitted one (fiddly job). However while removing pipes to give better access I noticed the pipe clamp holding the bottom turbo hose going into the intercooler was rusty and had cracked clean across with evidence of long term hot gases leaking past. This is usually hidden by the undertray and me/mechanics had missed it for years evidently (actually a few other things down there were rusty like my AC pipe which may be the source of my leak...).The car now starts, and runs, fine. So was this long running problem the ETM or the turbo boost leak? I couldnt say for sure, as both the ETM and the intake were repaired at the same time.The ETM was definitely screwed in 2021 as I got the correct codes. But there were no ETM codes until it let go, the car was ultra low mileage when I got it, and this boost leak look like its been like that 10 years I'm erring on blaming the pipe. If you have the same problems with no ETM codes its certainly worth checking the entire pipe run for joint intergrity or splits from the turbo to the manifold.
