“Un Paradiso delle donne” | La Trobe Art History Alumni Chapter La Trobe University 2022-11-07 | Presented by Adelina Modesti, art historian and Senior Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication at Melbourne University. Adelina is also a researcher with the ACIS-IDEA digital humanities project Textiles, Trade and Meaning in the Courts of Early Modern Italy during the time of Isabella d’Este“Un Paradiso delle donne”. Women’s Professional Artistic Practice in Early Modern Bologna: Lavinia Fontana and Elisabetta Sirani.Lavinia Fontana (1552 -1614) of Bologna is considered the first professional woman painter to practise in Renaissance Italy, and proved an inspirational role model for her compatriot, the peintre-graveur Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665). Sirani herself was instrumental in the development of women’s artistic practice during the seventeenth century, opening up her studio to female artists, with her remarkable success influencing many others who became professional artists and printmakers in the following generations. Bologna, the second most important papal city after Rome, indeed, could boast the largest single school of women artists in Early Modern Italy, if not Europe. The factors why this proved to be the case will be addressed in this talk, as we look at the achievements and legacy of these two successful women artists in the context of Bologna’s tradition of learned and famous women. Adelina Modesti together with Dr Consuelo Lollobrigida is co-editor of the new Brepols series Women in the Arts. Adelina’s research focuses on early modern women’s cultural production, female patronage, and transnational cultural exchange. She has published monographs on Elisabetta Sirani and Vittoria della Rovere, and essays on Artemisia Gentileschi, Margherita de’ Medici, and the textile production of Florentine nuns and court ladies. Currently Adelina is preparing a volume on Elisabetta Sirani for the pioneering Lund Humphries series Illuminating Women Artists.This La Trobe Art History Alumni Chapter online talk was delivered on 26 May 2022. Tracking Yolŋu Art: 1930s to Now | La Trobe Art History Alumni Chapter La Trobe University 2022-11-06 | Presented by Judith Ryan AM, Curatorial Advisor, Art Museums, University of Melbourne. This lecture was delivered as a webinar on 11 November 2021 as part of the La Trobe University Art History Alumni Chapter’s annual Rae Alexander Lecture programme. Dr Esther Theiler, Chair of the AHA Chapter, opened the event and it was moderated and introduced by Dr Vincent Alessi, Senior Lecturer, La Trobe University. Kali Micallef of the La Trobe Alumni Office provided technical assistance.Judith Ryan takes the audience on a personal, experiential, art historical journey through which trajectories and great innovative moments in the art history of the Yolŋu of Eastern Arnhem Land can be glimpsed in images of intercultural works of art made for viewing by balanda (outsiders) encountered in her curatorial work at the NGV and in major exhibitions and art awards across time.Judith’s prime focus is the iconography of Yolŋu art, visible in the miny’tji (ancestral clan designs) painted in natural ochres on body, ritual object, and from the 1930s on irregular pieces of Stringybark as part of a cross-cultural dialogue between Yolŋu and the colonisers.By looking at recent intercultural moments within this continuous cycle of Yolŋu history, which extends over incalculable millennia, modulations and quantum leaps are discernible within lineages of artists and across medium. New Narratives for Museums | La Trobe Art History Alumni Chapter La Trobe University 2022-11-06 | Presented by Bala Starr, Director of La Trobe Art Institute, La Trobe University’s centre for curatorial practice and cultural collections.In an online talk delivered on 15 October 2021 for members of the La Trobe University Art History Chapter, Bala Starr drew on her experiences as director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Singapore. Bala spoke of her experiences in managing art spaces and responding to the needs of artists, curators and the public with an inclusive approach and attention to what she calls the “counterpoints to mainstream art narratives”. Drawing on exhibitions curated as director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Singapore, Bala offered examples of inspiring projects where curators and artists have presented counterpoints to mainstream art narratives though careful attention to diverse objects, collections and archives. Medium and meaning | La Trobe Art History Alumni Chapter La Trobe University 2022-11-06 | Presented by Dr Lisa BeavenAdjunct Senior Research Fellow, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, La Trobe UniversityIntroduced by Esther Theiler, Chair of the La Trobe University Art History Alumni Chapter. This paper seeks to explore the sensuous and affective qualities of small devotional paintings in Roman collections in the seventeenth-century, in particular the relationship between religious devotion and materiality in small paintings from Roman collections. It examines the talismanic nature of small devotional paintings kept near or around the bed, and the relationship between the iconography of such images and the physical properties of the materials on which they were painted. It argues that some of the painted supports for such paintings were not only decorative but were also believed to be imbued with magical and medicinal properties, that enhanced the efficacy and symbolism of the painted image. Melbourne Mentorship Stay - Winners of the 2020-21 Technology Infusion Grand Challenge La Trobe University 2022-09-05 | Team Catalysts, an all-female team from SRM Institute of Science and Technology in India, won the grand prize in the third round of the Technology Infusion Grand Challenge, organised by La Trobe University. The three Biotechnology students: Rashmi Lenin, Priyanka Saravanan, and Srinidhi Sonai Anand, displayed their originality and creativity by developing a Smart Solution for membranes used in water filtration.This video show some of their highlights visiting La Trobe University for two weeks in June 2022. A hybrid format of online and in-person presentations meant that almost 100 participants joined the Oration, from Australia and around the world.The expert panel discussed current trends in mental health care for older rural Australians, highlighting future directions for innovative approaches to older people's mental health care delivery in rural contexts."Such an important topic and message of valuing and respecting older people who are a very important part (essential) in our communities.
