Qualcomm’s 5G Vision

The conversation begins with a discussion of the benefits of the transition from 4G to 5G, and the inevitability of technologies like 5G mmWave. Amon says that 5G mmWave will become ubiquitous soon, much like Wi-Fi is today.
Amon and Stern then transition to a discussion about contraction in the smartphone market. Rather than representing a new normal, Amon explains that there are three challenges facing the smartphone market: macro headwinds, inventory surpluses, and supply chain shortages. Consumers aren’t as willing to spend money on new smartphones in the short-term — spending their money on other digital devices instead of on handset upgrades — and manufacturers are sitting on a glut of product. Amon does believe that the market is experiencing a correction and should normalize by June 2023.
The conversation shifts to AI, specifically Qualcomm’s high performance on-device demo of Stable Diffusion — a generative AI model that creates images based on text inputs — and the huge opportunity it represents for Qualcomm. Amon explains that Qualcomm’s vision for the Connected Intelligent Edge is happening in real-time as the increased performance of power-efficient edge devices enables them to run advanced applications like large AI models — something that seemed impossible a few years ago.
Amon and Stern also discuss an extremely successful part of Qualcomm’s diversification plan: automotive. Qualcomm’s automotive business has grown 58 percent in the past year, despite challenging macro headwinds. As cars become increasingly connected to the cloud, Qualcomm auto tech delivered by the Snapdragon Digital Chassis has become industry standard. Rounding out the conversation, Amon and Stern discuss the many ways that Qualcomm is disrupting and revolutionizing the automotive landscape.

Qualcomm and TIM have partnered to deliver a groundbreaking immersive experience in Pompeii. With the help of 5G mmWave technology, concertgoers will be able to use their mobile phones to access a stunning AR experience on their screens. When they point their cameras around the venue, superimposed images of historically important architectural elements of the Amphitheatre of Pompeii will appear on their screens.
“It will combine the physical experience of the concert with digital elements, creating the possibility to interact with augmented reality and virtual reality elements,” says Fabio Iaione, Senior Director of Business Development at Qualcomm Europe.
This is all made possible by 5G mmWave technology, which is opening up new opportunities and use cases for OEMs and customers alike.

The panel began with participants giving their opinions on where the global satellite communications market is headed and what new use cases are emerging. Durga shared several ways that satellites can impact 5G global coverage and emergency communications, from smartphone users to drivers in connected vehicles, and reiterated Qualcomm’s goal of bringing these capabilities to a wide range of devices across all tiers through Snapdragon Satellite. The solution is the world’s first satellite-based two-way capable messaging solution for smartphones and offers truly global coverage leveraging the fully operational Iridium LEO satellite constellation. Emergency messaging on Snapdragon Satellite is planned to be available on next-generation smartphones, launched in select regions starting in the second half of 2023.
Beginning with smartphones, Snapdragon Satellite can expand to support laptops, tablets, vehicles and IoT, it will offer OEMs the opportunity to differentiate and deliver unique services with taking advantage of satellite connectivity.

Rahul Patel explained that cellular connectivity is now a basic necessity for individuals and businesses to operate in the modern world and, for both emerging and developed markets, cloud connectivity will enable new and powerful use cases. Patel emphasized that we need to use connectivity technologies to push humanity forward as a whole, and not only advance certain markets or countries. As the planet continues to warm, it’s imperative that corporations operate sustainably and act responsibly as they work toward a net-zero future.
During the panel, Baker notes that Qualcomm is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 — citing the company’s recently published corporate responsibility report for progress toward the goal and is actively working to reduce emissions across its value chain.
As 5G network deployment continues at pace, reducing energy consumption and overall carbon footprint remains a challenge for the mobile industry. However, 5G and 6G — in tandem with technologies like AI, virtualization, and the cloud — will play a role in the reaching net-zero across industries.
So, what is Qualcomm doing to achieve net-zero?
For starters, Baker says that Qualcomm is in the process of replacing cogeneration plants on campus with renewable electricity. It’s also working to secure long-term power purchase agreements (PPA) in its top operational footprint regions, for example Europe and the U.S., to procure renewable energy. And while Qualcomm is primarily fabless, it’s looking at reducing process emissions in its fabrication facilities.
Qualcomm is also working with its supply chain and manufacturing partners to reach net-zero — many of whom are working toward net-zero themselves. Qualcomm is hyper-focused on building the most power efficient chips possible. The goal with each new chipset series in the Snapdragon Mobile Platform is a 10 percent reduction in power consumption year over year. In 2022, Qualcomm achieved a 20 percent reduction with its Snapdragon mobile chipsets when averaged across all use cases.
In addition to looking at one's own operations, Baker says industries should focus on digital transformation and how technologies like it can be leveraged for real world applications such as water optimization or smart agriculture.

In this video, Oleg and one of his colleagues, Sarah, demonstrate a feature called “Package-level Tracking and Condition Monitoring” using the Qualcomm Aware Tracker. The Qualcomm Aware Tracker is a smart device with sensor capabilities that track the environmental conditions and location of a package — it’s capable of detecting falls, temperature changes, humidity, and more.
To demonstrate the Qualcomm Aware Tracker’s capabilities, Sarah — equipped with one of the precision location tracking devices and a mock package — boards a bus in Barcelona. As they ride through the city, Oleg uses his Qualcomm Aware dashboard to track the package’s progress. The Qualcomm Aware Tracker gives Oleg real-time asset intelligence and location data.

A major part of Qualcomm’s current research focuses on how 5G can be optimized for IoT services that require expansive wide-area coverage. The first of two tech demos on the topic showed that device mesh networking could extend coverage for low-power IoT devices, even providing a timing source when they have no clear line-of-sight to GPS satellites. This could make 5G network IoT deployments more cost-efficient.
The second tech demo explored how multi-cell downlink angle of departure (DL-AoD) can deliver cost-efficient, low-power, and wide-area positioning for narrowband 5G devices like wearables and IoT sensors. These devices often have less accurate positioning since they can’t take advantage of 5G’s high bandwidth for more precise results. To improve positioning accuracy for narrowband devices, Qualcomm used multi-cell DL-AoD — a device-based positioning technique — to measure differences in signal strength and beam RSRP. With several DL-AoD readings, the precise position of the narrowband device can be determined.
As 5G continues to evolve, Qualcomm will remain at the forefront of innovation by working to make networks more efficient, more accurate, and more capable of handling the demands of digital transformation.

In this tech demo video from MWC 2023, witness how Qualcomm’s advancements in air interface design are delivering unparalleled performance and efficiency in wireless communication.
Tested in San Diego, California, this tech demo examined full-duplex communication with simultaneous uplink and downlink. Traditionally, this would result in downlink degradation from uplink transmissions, and vice versa; however, thanks to Qualcomm’s research, this demonstration shows that adopting several techniques to mitigate interference can result in significant improvements in uplink and downlink performance. Additionally, by utilizing the Qualcomm mmWave test network, we see how full-duplex wireless access and backhaul improves system throughput, latency, and coverage.
In addition, Qualcomm is demonstrating an innovative technology called super-QAM that can achieve both power savings for greener networks and increased speeds using 16k-QAM under practical operating conditions.

In the first demonstration, Qualcomm shows how industrial and enterprise operators of 5G private networks could benefit from adaptive RAN operations to adapt their network’s configuration for diverse applications and network conditions. The Qualcomm Edgewise Suite could power adaptive RAN operations as an rApp with its RAN Intelligent Controller.
In the second demonstration, Qualcomm shows off intelligent scheduling with its new disaggregated and virtualized 5G private network platform with open interfaces. In this over-the-air (OTA) test, more accurate channel estimation and interference prediction with AI/ML makes for a more efficient 5G private RAN capable of accommodating more 5G devices.
In the final demonstration, we see Qualcomm’s latest R&D in improving Wi-Fi network performance with joint transmission technology. This demo showcases their live Wi-Fi testbed using over-the-air synchronization for joint transmissions from multiple access points to multiple clients for significant gain in throughput.

Precise positioning is an integral part of the 5G standard that offers a new dimension of location awareness to complement satellite-based technologies like GPS. It provides more accurate and seamless navigation in challenging environments like “urban canyons” — areas with tall skyscrapers that can cause positioning errors. Qualcomm’s demonstrations using the Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF System, conducted in collaboration with ZTE and China Unicom, showed how 5G can deliver centimeter-level precise positioning in increasingly complex use cases. In large hospitals, warehouses, or factories — complex indoor spaces which have multiple reflective surfaces, on-device intelligence can improve positioning precision to centimeter levels.
RF sensing is an extension of precise positioning that leverages 5G signals to do more — detect and track device-free objects. 5G mmWave offers the wide channel bandwidths necessary for high-resolution RF sensing.
Qualcomm’s pioneering research in wireless and AI has been crucial in unlocking the full potential of 5G. The tech demo at MWC2023 showed that precise positioning and RF sensing can be deployed in both indoor and outdoor use cases for pinpoint-accurate navigation and positioning with the help of 5G connectivity.

We’re seeing rapid growth of 5G networks and devices, and that shows no signs of slowing down. As demand for 5G connectivity continues to rise, it’s become clear that more spectrum is necessary to support new use cases and opportunities. Expanding into the upper-mid band (7 to 24 GHz) offers the best of both worlds: the wide-area coverage of sub-7 GHz spectrum and the extreme capacity of mmWave. This tech demo sequence showcased the innovations that Qualcomm has developed to make the upper-mid band viable for mobile communication.
5G introduced massive MIMO to expand into higher bands in sub-7 GHz. Now, Giga-MIMO will enable Qualcomm and its partners to unlock the upper-mid spectrum bands and deliver wider-area coverage with higher capacity to support the networks of today and tomorrow. Operating at a higher capacity will also open the door to better positioning accuracy for 6G.
Qualcomm’s research and innovation in Sub-THz communication were on full display at MWC 2023, with over-the-air tech demos showing data transmitted at speeds of up to 300 Gigabit per second and distances up to 500 meters. As 5G networks become more complex and more devices become part of our connected lives, Qualcomm will continue pushing the limits of what’s possible to enable better coverage, faster speeds, and more power-efficient solutions.

The first demonstration showcases Qualcomm’s new machine learning-based mmWave beam management in action. As an active project in 5G Advanced 3GPP Release 18, Qualcomm is exploring how machine learning can further improve system performance by predicting mmWave beam selection. In this demonstration, see how machine learning-based beam management improved mmWave system performance — both at the base station and for the test user.
In the second demonstration, witness multi-vendor cross-node machine learning-based channel state feedback. This demonstration adopts a sequential training methodology for multi-vendor deployment, where device and base station vendors agree to share data for sequential training (proprietary neural network structures do not need to be shared). This implementation is more practical and yields a data-driven air interface that, thanks to machine learning, can improve performance and efficiency.

Cristiano talked about the digital future, highlighting the growing importance of semiconductors that will see manufacturing double in the next decade and the importance of a resilient, diversified global semiconductor supply chain. He also answered Joe Kernen’s question about the “new Qualcomm,” and how the company is prepared aligned to diversify into various industries: data centers, automotive, and the internet of things are just a few of those industries.
Cristiano also touched on how the technology industry is leading the world toward digital transformation. Even in an economic downturn, digital transformation can help accelerate nearly every industry.
As Cristiano says in the interview, Qualcomm is the company behind the inventions of 3G, 4G, and 5G and “So as long as cellular communication innovation is important, there's always going to be room for Qualcomm.”
As one of the many examples of Qualcomm’s investments in using our technology to bridge the digital divide, Cristiano talked about how 5G technology is helping to digitally transform India by providing the infrastructure and connectivity that the country needs: “It’s more cost effective to do it with 5G versus laying fiber everywhere.”

Over the next four quarterly periods, the marketing campaign will focus on retail payments and biometrics, transportation tracking and logistics, industrial and automated manufacturing, and enterprise building safety and security, respectively.
Ketal Gandhi, Director of Business Development and Global Leader of IoT Retail Payments and Digital Signage at Qualcomm, presents the evolution of payment methods from cash transactions all the way to the possible future of biometric payments. The broadening of payment options has led to more sale options for retailers, including self-checkout, smart carts, and more. Qualcomm IoT solutions are integral to many of these newer digital payment transaction methods, which have surged in popularity over the last few years.
In this video, Ketal Gandhi moderates a panel with members of the Qualcomm Advantage Network to discuss retail payments and point of sale transaction innovations. HP Global Strategist of Retail & Industry Solutions Sandip Kamat shares observations on the evolution of in-store shopping experiences,and how the pandemic has accelerated this evolution, including a boom in contactless payment.
Aidoo Osei, SVP of Product Strategy and Merchant Acquiring at Global Payments Inc., discusses their company’s role as a payment processor having to meet the needs of contactless payment, particularly through NFC tap-to-pay from smartphone apps. However, there’s still a need to provide many different transaction modalities to reach as many consumers as possible, be it traditional credit card, buy-now-pay-later, crypto, or other payment methods. Global Payments Inc.’s goal is to present that complexity of payment options in a way that’s simple for merchants and consumers.
Elo Touch is one of the leading providers of point-of-sale (POS) hardware to merchants and retailers. Chris Rentzos, ISV Partnerships Manager EMEA at Elo Touch, spoke about the things that customers are looking for, namely all-in-one devices that provide as many choices for retail payment as possible. These types of all-in-one devices help reduce the different types of POS hardware needed, thereby lowering the cost of ownership for merchants and retailers.
With the digital transformation of retail payment systems comes more possibilities for fraud, chargebacks, and other security vulnerabilities. Manuel Roggero, Director of Digital Transformation and Innovation at Royal Bank of Canada, speaks to how the bank addresses these challenges. It invests heavily in cryptography to ensure secure transactions as well as customer data. Ensuring a high level of security is important to maintain consumer’s faith in digital payment methods.
As the digital transformation of retail payment continues, new technologies will continue to arise that can make the retail experience more accessible and enjoyable for both consumers and retailers. In this video, University of California Santa Barbara PhD candidate Fabio Gritti delivers a presentation called "Analyzing the Security of Dynamic Allocators for Monolithic Firmware Images."
Dynamic memory allocators are algorithms used to manage the dynamic memory — for example, heap memory — of programs. A robust dynamic memory allocator is a crucial element of any modern system. Developers seek to strike a balance between their performance and security — but vulnerable allocators are frequently abused by nefarious actors as building blocks in complex exploitation chains.
Most research on dynamic memory allocators is focussed on how they function in widely used and standardized heap libraries — used by high-end devices like desktop systems and servers. And while dynamic memory allocators are also used extensively in embedded systems, they haven’t commanded as much scrutiny or consideration from the security community.
To address this, Gritti and his UC Santa Barbara collaborators developed HEAPSTER, a system that automatically identifies the heap library used by a monolithic firmware image, and tests its security with symbolic execution and bounded model checking. This testing discovered critical heap vulnerabilities in embedded systems, showing a clear pattern of subpar security standards — raising concerns about the security of dynamic memory allocators used by IoT systems.

5G RuralDorset is working to discover how agritech can help improve farming in the Dorset county of the United Kingdom, which includes the UNESCO-designated world heritage coastline known as the Jurassic Coast.
Fellow partner Wessex Internet provides rural broadband as part of the 5G RuralDorset to enable farms to transfer high volumes of data efficiently and seamlessly. Meanwhile, Intrepid Minds Robotics contributes various types of drones to the program, including one that acts as a mobile base station, a ground drone designed to care for livestock, and an aerial drone equipped with ground penetrating radar made to aid in maintaining crops.
These drones are equipped with 5G mmWave technology from Qualcomm. 5G mmWave enables the drones to collect large amounts of data and transmit it at lightning speed to farmers, so they can make more informed decisions about their farming operations in real time. Qualcomm also deploys the 5G mmWave infrastructure needed for the drones to connect to.
The information collected and relayed via 5G mmWave allows the farmers to make informed decisions that could help improve the safety of their farming operations as well as efficiently cut costs. With the help of Qualcomm, Wessex Internet, and Intrepid Minds Robotics, the 5G RuralDorset program is providing rural farms in Dorset with the same means of mass data and information collection that is available to large commercial farms.

At the 2022 Qualcomm Product Security Summit, Graz University of Technology’s Claudio Canella conducted a session entitled “Enforcing Program Behavior Through Syscall Sequences and Origins,” and walked the audience through possible security countermeasures.
One such countermeasure is Control-Flow Integrity, or CFI. CFI allows you to restrict syscalls and returns to a specific location, but only within one security domain, like the user-space or the kernel, and does not protect interaction between the two.
Protecting against cross-security-domain attacks requires the Linux Secure Computing (Seccomp) feature, which limits an application's syscalls to a pre-defined set. However, Seccomp only considers individual syscalls independent of previously executed ones, which reduces its effectiveness.
Built upon Claudio Canella’s previous work on Enter Sandbox, Syscall-Flow-Integrity Protection (SFIP) addresses the limitations of Linux Seccomp by limiting the control flow across security domains like user-to-kernel transfers. SFIP is built upon three pillars: syscall sequences that model the control flow of the application, a syscall origin map that identifies valid syscall locations, and kernel enforcement that checks whether the current syscall is part of a valid sequence and originates from a valid location.
Extracting the information necessary for SFIP presents three challenges, which led to the creation of an automated extraction system called SysFlow. SysFlow allows for fully automated syscall-flow-integrity protection of large-scale applications.
SFIP sports a minimal runtime overhead of 1.8%, which makes it a worthwhile solution that increases the complexity of control-hijacking and mimicry attacks, and provides a significant attack surface reduction.

Venturing inside Bosch’s electronics factory, you can see how several technologies rely on a 5G private network to automate mission-critical business processes. This begins with an autonomous vehicle providing an empty box to an autonomous mobile robot (AMR). 5G allows ultra-low latency, time synchronization communication with the AMR, while 5G positioning tech alerts the AMR that the autonomous vehicle is in place.
The AMR can then pick up a part from the conveyor belt, hold it under an HD vision systems camera that is connected to virtual controls via 5G, decide if the part is of sufficient quality or not, and sort the part accordingly. Good parts are then placed into the box atop the autonomous vehicle. When the box is full, the vehicle can then take the parts to the next part of the factory floor.
This demonstration is a testament to the ability of Qualcomm’s high-reliability, low-latency 5G technologies that can increase industrial automation and usher in Industry 4.0.

While bootloaders use signature verification mechanisms in order to protect a device from executing malicious software, attackers can circumvent these protections by finding weaknesses in the bootloaders and implementing custom functionality. Christopher Wade details security findings in the firmware update and management interfaces used by hardware platforms on mobile devices, and how they present an increased attack surface.
Wade covers signature bypass weaknesses in low-level mobile chips that facilitate weaponization of phone NFC capabilities, vulnerabilities in second-stage Android bootloaders that allow for authentication bypass and exfiltration of protected data, and findings in first-stage bootloaders that attack the lowest level of the Android boot process.

C-V2X smartly links connected cars with other vehicles using 5G, as well as the infrastructure needed to support traffic safety, and covers the exchange of a variety of different messages catering to different use cases.
Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication facilitates communication between vehicles. With V2V, vehicles can share data such as positioning, speed, lane changes, or advance warnings to prevent collisions.
Vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) communication focuses on safety for vehicles and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and bicyclists.
Vehicle-to-network communication (V2N) is designed to support real-time or high-speed communications between connected vehicles and the network. This can include the relaying of real-time traffic updates, map-based navigation, other cloud services, and software updates.
Lastly, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) concerns roadside infrastructure like traffic lights, enabling them to relay information about when signals will change to enhance vehicle and pedestrian safety.
Both V2V and V2P require ultra-reliable and low-latency communication, and are a good fit for the URLLC. Meanwhile, because V2N involves the cloud and higher bitrate communication, it’s more of a match for enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB). V2I can resemble massive IoT or mMTC because of the need to communicate with lots of infrastructure.
5G is capable of meeting the various requirements of each of these communications use cases, and is future-proofed to support the continued development of C-V2X. All of these different wireless technologies can help make roads not only safer, but more efficient for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
