But to get to the Paris-Est station, our train takes a line that is rarely used by passenger trains: "la Grande Ceinture parisienne" or roughly translated, the Great Parisian Belt. This line will be the focus of today's video. It forms somewhat of a loop around Paris and allows the interconnection of all the main Parisian lines and stations.Our journey begins at dawn, at the southern entrance of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges station and ends when the train arrives, at Paris-Est station.You will be able to discover many abandoned stations and facilities, most of which have been barely used and subsequently closed due to the low passenger traffic on the line. ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Niesenbahn cab ride, up to 68% incline, Switzerland [07.2022] Führerstandsmitfahrt Niesen lorirocks777 2024-05-18 | In this video we'll be heading up to the Niesen peak on one of the world's longest scenic funiculars, climbing over 1'600 metres (5'250 ft.) alongside the world's longest staircase. The Niesen is the first of a range of mountains stretching from Spiez through to Adelboden in the Bernese Highlands. From Spiez, it almost has the appearance of a pyramid, earning it he nickname "Swiss Pyramid". The top offers a breathtaking 360 degree panorama of the surrounding alps and lakes, especially on clear days like this one. The video also includes a walk around the top, with the views it has to offer. The Niesen has been a popular spot for visitors for hundreds of years, leading to the opening of a hotel at the top in 1856. Around the same time, the feasibility of building a railway to the top was examined, however the plans were for a cog wheel railway from Wimmis (in the adjacent valley, on the otherside of the mountain). This was not perused due to it's high cost, but in all, 3 main attempts were made to realise the railway. With the new Spiez - Frutigen railway opening in 1901, the potential for a Niesen railway from the Kander valley grew more appealing. It was this variation that came to fruition, with the funicular proving to be much more cost effective to build and maintain. The line was opened in the summer of 1910.We have already driven trains through both aforementioned valleys, namely passing Mülenen in the Kander valley on the Lötschberg railway in our video from Basel to Brig and in our journey from Spiez to Zweisimmen through the Simme valley (Simmental). For those who don't know, the Pyrenees is a mountain range in south western France, separating the Liberian peninsula from the rest of Europe.It was in 1913 that the relatively early electrification for the time of this line began, at 12 kV - 16.66 Hz due in particular to the steep gradient of the line, and the large number of pilgrim trains heading to Lourdes. It was only from 1923 that the more typically French 1.5 kV - DC appeared. Astoundingly, many of the original catenary posts and yokes are still standing and in service today. Also note the way the catenary lines are mounted in the curves - an older slanted technique which requires much more skill to accomplish. There are only a few lines left in Switzerland and France that have maintained this older design. We will cover the 321 km today aboard a Régiolis Z51500 which will easily tackle the Capverne ramp and its 33‰ (3.3%) ramps.Still partly equipped with manual block signals, you will be able to observe some of the last mechanical signals still in service in France. ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Schöftland - Aarau - Menziken cab ride, Switzerland [11.2023] Führerstandsmitfahrt WSB lorirocks777 2024-02-24 | We're looking at another unique line in Switzerland in this video. During the railway boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, railways were not only built between major cities and industrial hubs, but also to smaller profile regions. This seemed to have been the case worldwide, with most of the smaller railways being phased out when larger investments were needed, or when cars and trucks gained prominence. Switzerland too lost a few of it's smaller railways, but no where near as many as other European countries. This is one of those railways, that may have been abandoned in favour of other services in another country, but it continues to be maintained and optimised to meet the demands of the present. The major portion of the two railways we'll see in this video, used to share the road with other traffic, however over the years, as you'll see labelled in the video, the tracks have been moved to reduce crossings and increase the overall safety of the line. As a result, we will actually be travelling on two former SBB trackbeds, one between Aarau and Suhr, the other between Reinach and Menziken (the former line from Seetal to Beromünster). The line was formally also used to freight traffic, with special facilities that allowed normal gauge wagons to "piggy back" on narrow gauge bogies. The stations Suhr & Oberentfelden both had the necessary equipment to allow these transfers. There are still some remaining narrow gauge railways that continue the practice today. For anybody wondering, the two blinking lights inside of a Rhombus tell the driver that somebody would like to board at the upcoming station. Some stations are request stops only, and have buttons to press near the platform to stop the train. Another little note, the inclines shown in the top right corner are the maximum inclines on the line until the next station - unlike in other videos, where they usually only apply to the section of track following the signal. The line has a few considerable inclines which are noted to the lower left of the screen in promille. Le profil est alors très intéressant et tourmenté autour du massif vosgiens. Après Sarrebourg, la ligne emprunte le célèbre saut de mouton de Héming, qui inverse le sens de circulation des trains. This video is a continuation on the narrow gauge railway to Montreux. Recently a new train was developed which allows travel between Montreux and Interlaken via Spiez. This is achieved using a regauging system in Zweisimmen, in order to allow the specially developed coaches to travel on the normal gauge rails. The train we're travelling with today is a conventional narrow gauge train. We will, however, be passing a couple of the new trains on our journey.It's a popular train for tourists as we pass through the scenic Bernese alps and in Vaud and also a portion on Fribourg, on our way down to Montreux on the lake of Geneva. Today we're taking a line connecting the two, along the border Switzerland shares with Austria and Lichtenstein, which is defined by the river Rhein. In Switzerland it is known as the Rheintalbahn (Rhein valley railway), not be be confused with the Rheintalbahn in Germany (which will also be covered on this channel). Apart from the section between Heerbrugg and Oberriet, the land we see to the far left until we reach Rüthi belongs to Austria, and from just past Rüthi to Sargans it belongs to Liechtenstein. In a future video, we will travel from Buchs through Liechtenstein and on to Feldkirch in Austria.The line is currently closed (February - October 2023) due to construction of a second track in certain sections to allow for an increased frequency of passenger services. Furthermore, a few stops that were closed over the years are to be renewed and reactivated, as labelled throughout the video. This line, which is more than famous in France, put into service between 1847 and 1855, connects the three largest cities, namely Paris, Lyon and Marseille. It is still called the "Imperial Artery", it was the main line of the mythical Le Mistral train, and was used in 1954 to set the first rail speed record. 863 km long, it is electrified at 1500 volts DC, and is complimented by the high-speed line in its entirety. Today, there is no longer a train linking Paris to Marseille directly via this historic route.It is between Marseille and Lyon along the Rhone Valley that we will cover the route in this new video. ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Spiez - Interlaken Ost cab ride [06.2023] Switzerland Führerstandsmitfahrt Thunersee lorirocks777 2023-08-01 | Happy Swiss national day!Today we're on a picturesque line along the lake of Thun, between Spiez and Interlaken. Interlaken is a popular tourist destination in Switzerland. The name literally means "between the lakes" as it is situated between the lake of Thun and the Brienz lake. The normal gauge network ends there and narrow gauge railways continue on to various locations in the alps. We've been on this line before, on a longer journey from Vallorbe to Interlaken: youtu.be/L-O0k1oF9_YSince then, the 3 stations between Interlaken and Spiez have unfortunately been closed to passenger traffic and are served by buses instead. Here is a video showing the old BLS rolling stock stopping along the line: (youtu.be/b9Ljbc98V6c?t=443) and also the regional freight train (which no longer serves Interlaken): youtu.be/Z8ab-q7L2VMOn a side note, there used to be a narrow gauge line on the other side of the lake, providing a link to the Beatenberg funicular. It resembled a tramway and also connected Thun to Interlaken, with a further line in Thun to Steffisburg. The line was different to this one in that it had to gain 60 metres in elevation due to the terrain along the lake. As cars gained popularity, the railway lost passengers and slowed traffic due to the fact that it often shared the road with them. By 1952, the trains were replaced by trolleybuses, after just 38 years of operation. The line between Interlaken and Beatenbucht was already closed in 1939.I hope you enjoyed the video. This line beat the first Swiss railway (The Spanisch Brötli Bahn) by 3 years, with the section connecting Basel in Switzerland and St. Louis in France, opening in 1844.The first parts of the line opened to traffic in 1840, 13 years after the first French railway. At this stage, the French network only consisted of about 500 km of rails. 1841 saw the majority of the line complete, with the remaining sections being completed by 1846. The whole region was given over to Germany after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, until the end of World War I in 1918. This led to the line being optimised for right hand drive operation, which is still the case today. Germany also opened a connection line between St. Louis and Weil am Rhein, allowing transit from Germany into the Elsass region without the need to pass through Basel. We've already featured Breil-sur-Roya - Nice on this channel, this time we're travelling in the opposite direction, but instead of stopping in Breil, we'll continue to Tenda. The line has a very interesting history - some of which you'll learn about throughout the journey. First conceived in the 1860's, it was met with opposition in France for security reasons. Finally, construction started, but alas, a few years later, World War I broke out and it came to a halt. Finally in 1928, the line from Cuneo (Italy) through Breil-sur-Roya (France) to Vintimiglia (Italy) was opened, including a connection line from Breil to Nice. The line suffered a lot during World War 2, with some structures being destroyed multiple times. ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Liestal - Waldenburg cab ride: The 2nd last day of operation [04.2021] Führerstandsmitfahrt lorirocks777 2023-05-05 | This cab ride was recorded on the 2nd last day of operation for this 750 mm gauge railway - the only one of it's kind in Switzerland that served passengers daily. The last day was overcast, making this the last sunny day of operation for these trains.The railway is beloved in the region - made apparent by the large number of people who came to ride on it one last time, take photographs or stand by and wave. The trains were decorated with reefs and running in longer configurations than usual for the weekend.After the final public train in the early hours of the morning on the 6th of April, it was farewell. The trains were sold to a 760mm railway in Slovakia and the tracks would be rebuilt with the more standard 1000 mm gauge. This would make it cheaper to produce rolling stock and allow a possible connection to the tram network of Basel in the future.The new railway is now in operation. During the construction process I filmed a video from a car to give viewers a glimpse into what was happening. ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Spiez - Zweisimmen cab ride, Switzerland [05.2021] Führerstandsmitfahrt Simmentalbahn lorirocks777 2023-04-28 | The line we're looking at today was originally two lines, built and run by separate operators. The Spiez - Erlenbach railway was opened in 1897, after the Thunerseebahn between Thun and Interlaken had been inaugurated in 1893. The line aimed to link markets, especially the trading of livestock in Erlenbach with other parts of Europe.In 1902, a second railway company (EZB) built a railway from Erlenbach to Zweisimmen, where a narrow gauge connection would be opened in 1905 to Montreux. In 1942, the two companies merged, before merging with the BLS in 1997.As with most of the Swiss network, freight traffic has seen a decline over the past decades, with currently only 1 or two stations still being served on the line. There is an hourly commuter train serving all stations and also an hourly RegioExpress, which couples to the RegioExpress from Brig in Spiez and continues as one train to Bern - thus allowing the direct connection to Bern from Zweisimmen. The line is also part of the Goldenpass service, which is a connection from Montreux directly to Interlaken, with special coaches that can are adaptable for both gauges.At the start of our journey, you'll see the Niesen summit to the left, a popular destination for tourists that allows a panoramic view of a large part of the Bernese highlands. The Lötschberg line runs in the valley on the other side of this mountain. The section from Neussargues to St-Chély will be covered in a future video. The line we're travelling along has gradients of up to 3%, allowing us to appreciate the famous purr of the V16 Pielstick engine of the BB67400, in one of the few 4K videos in this locomotive on Youtube. ★ 4K 🇫🇷 Briançon - Veynes-Dévoluy cab ride, France [12.2022] Führerstandsmitfahrt lorirocks777 2023-02-25 | We looked at this line about a year ago, but the amount of snow made another video worthwhile. This is our 11th video from France. See the others here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWoUS6jbUY-pwPC1C397w8BoG-0bMqr_oLink to the continuation to Marseille: youtu.be/hxxZVQ9ScYw?t=5614We will be travelling from France's highest city - Briançon with its train station at 1'203 meters above sea level to the junction Veynes-Dévoluy. From there you can continue to Marseille to the south, Grenoble to the north or Valence to the west.As most lines in France, this line has an interesting story. Probably the most interesting part for me, was discovering that 16 Km of the original line is now underwater. Due to a history of disastrous flooding, construction began in 1955 of what would then be Europe's largest dam to help regulate the water flow, further enable irrigation and bring hydro-electric power opportunities. In 1956, construction began of a new track section between Chorges and Embrun. It was opened in 1960, as the old line was submerged along with 2 stations, 4 tunnels and 2 notable viaducts. During maintenance of the dam every 10 years, the old line once again becomes visible.What is even more interesting is a branch line that was planned to leave the line near Chorges and connect to Barcelonnette. Construction commenced in 1909 and in anticipation of the dam, elaborate measures were taken to ensure the line would not be hampered by the then anticipated 50 to 80 meters of water. Many structures were completed including about 6 Km of tunnels, a 300m S shaped viaduct and a 680m viaduct crossing the Durance and what was to become the "Lac de Serre-Ponçon" dam. Inevitably works were hampered by the wars and the project ended up being abandoned as the dam was to hold much more water than originally planned, however many of the structures still exist today.We hope you enjoyed the video. ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Oberwald - Furka - Realp rack railway diesel cab ride [08.2021] Führerstandsmitfahrt lorirocks777 2023-01-29 | In this video we'll be looking at the wonderful Furka mountain pass rack railway. We've been here once before. This time you have the chance to view it in the opposite direction. Here's the first video in case you missed it: youtu.be/uF0S5NP_vbwThe line used to be the heart of the Furka Oberalp railway (FO), a narrow gauge rack railway connecting the SBB station of Brig in the canton of Wallis with the RhB network in Disentis/Mustér (together hosting the glacier express), with a branch line connecting to Göschenen of the Gotthard railway. Construction of the line commenced in 1911. As a result of World War I, funds and workers were no longer available, putting a stop to progress. In 1926, the remainder of the line was finally finished.Due to large amounts of snow and the danger of avalanches, the line had to be closed during winter months. This included removing catenary wires and other pieces of infrastructure prone to damage, closing the tunnels and even folding a specially designed bridge down into the valley. The viaduct which once stood in its place was destroyed by an avalanche in 1916 before a train even got to drive on it.The high costs involved with this procedure, as well as the inconvenience of the line being divided for 5 to 6 months of the year led to the development of the Furka base tunnel. This was completed in 1982, upon which the mountain pass was decommissioned and planned to be removed. Thankfully, railway fans formed an association, aiming to preserve the line, which they were successful in doing. Finally by 2010, the line had been restored to the extent that trains could once again travel all the way from Realp to Oberwald. Special thanks the the DFB for allowing us to film and share this special experience of a former electric line with diesel and steam traction. In Gletsch we cross 2 steam trains. Apparently departures are only possible from track 1, which meant shunting to track 1 after the first steam train had left and then waiting for the second on to arrive.I hope you enjoyed the video. ★ 4K 🇫🇷 Argentan - Granville cab ride, France [Autumn 2022] BB 67400 lorirocks777 2023-01-21 | In this video, we'll be travelling from Argentan, a town in northwestern France with a population of over 13'000 to the costal port town of Granville. The line was opened in sections between 1866 & 1870, allowing a direct connection from the costal town to Paris Montparnasse. The railway enthusiasts among you may have seen a picture of a steam engine that overran a buffer stop in Paris, resulting in it smashing through the station wall and plunging down onto the pavement. The train in question was an express train from Granville.Watching the video, you might notice that the track bed appears to be wide enough for a double track line. This was in fact the case before a line renewal between 1994 - 1999 saw the majority of the line reduced to single track. You'll also notice a large amount of stations that are no longer served. Apparently a stop at one of these stations is possible for larger groups, if arranged in advance. Our train consists of 2 diesel-electric locomotives of the type BB 67400, built between 1969 - 1975. Their main powerplant is a V16 Pielstick engine. Passenger services ceased between Solothurn and Büren in 1994 due to low passenger volume. Since 2016, the line has been separated in Büren an der Aare due to a bridge that needed maintenance work.The trains serving this line used to continue from Solothurn on to Herzogenbuchsee, along a line that is now also partially missing. ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Zürich HB - Luzern cab ride, Switzerland [09.2019] Führerstandsmitfahrt lorirocks777 2023-01-07 | In this video, we're looking at the InterCity route between 2 popular Swiss cities with the tourists - Zürich, Switzerland's largest city and Lucerne, a city on a lake preceding the alps.The original line between Zürich and Luzern was actually routed via Affoltern am Albis to Zug, one we have looked at before. At that time, Zug was a terminus station like Zürich and Lucerne still are, which required a change of direction to reach Lucerne. Note the right hand curve after we leave Zug. The straight section after that curve formerly continued behind us to what was the terminus station. To assist in turning trains, the loop track labelled after leaving Zug was at that time not a loop, rather a track where trains could reverse left into from the terminus, then pull forwards towards Lucerne and reverse back into the station.When the line was built between Zug and Arth-Goldau in 1897, the loop was made and the station shifted to where it is now. The loop served to connect the line from Arth-Goldau with Lucerne as well as Zürich via Affoltern am Albis. It was taken out of service in 1990. All trains to Lucerne from the south were now forced to take the Gotthard line until Immensee or Rotkreuz, where lines branched off towards Lucerne, and trains towards Zürich would continue via Thalwil.This video is a little different in that the camera was mounted outside of the cab - the main difference being the sound and lack of window reflections. I ended the recording in Bussigny due to the weather. I was expecting the snow we see at departure to be more present along our route, but a few stations down the line it was just raining. Nevertheless, I kept recording because of the construction works along the way - which show the line in a unique condition. There is construction work at the stations of Montreaux, Cully (1 track missing) & Renens. Between Lausanne and Renens a rail overpass is under construction and 2 of the 4 tracks have been completely removed for their renewal. ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Laupen - Bern - Langnau, cab ride Switzerland [09.2022] Führerstandsmitfahrt lorirocks777 2022-10-14 | Today we're looking at a couple of interesting lines in the canton of Bern aboard the S2 service. The line we're starting on formerly connected Flamatt & Gümmenen. In 1993, it was decided only to operate the line to Laupen due to the low volume of people that used the section to Gümmenen and the inadequate connects between trains there.In a 2020 video from Geneva to Lucerne, you can see the line as it was being overhauled (youtu.be/1kgmgDbHg1g?t=6481). For this purpose it was closed for a number of months. Amongst other things, the overhead wiring was completely renewed and the station of Laupen (formally a 5 track station) was moved a few hundred meters towards Flamatt and given just a single platform. Those who watch our last trip in France from Bordeaux to Marseille may recall that we travelled along one of the first railways in France (the section Sète-Ville - Tarscon). The line we're one today also belongs to that category, having opened in 1843. What I love about the French railway is how interconnected it is (and in many cases was - many lines have been closed.) There are many more options of how to get from A to B than on your typical railways in Switzerland and also a lot of options for turning around. The junctions with former and current connecting lines are labelled during the journey.If you'd like to follow our journey, I can recommend openrailwaymaps.org.
