July 20th (Jill Cislaghi) - Vocal and Guitar Cover BlueParadoxical 2016-07-11 | In 1977, Jill Cislaghi released the album "Friends Of Mine," while she was at Regis College in Massachusetts. Although the original record was sold in very small quantities, it has become a collector's item, and it was reissued by Yoga Records in 2015. Here is my cover of one of "July 20th," one of my favorite songs from the album. I'm not sure what that date meant to Jill Cislaghi, but regardless, it is a special song to me. Moon On The Water (Eleanor Wallace) - Folk Psych Guitar Cover BlueParadoxical 2016-07-10 | In 1966, Eleanor Wallace released the magical album "Songs of the Middle Way," which featured her enchanting vocals and beautiful guitar and lute playing. Here is my loose interpretation of the lute part for "Moon On The Water," one of my favorite tracks from the album. As I do not have a lute, I played it on my electrified classical guitar. Enjoy! I Hear A Sweet Voice Calling - Bill Monroe Cover - Gibson ES-125 BlueParadoxical 2016-07-04 | This song has been one of my favorites to play around with on the guitar for the past month or so, and I made my own version of it that's largely based on the chorus. Elvis reportedly liked this song, and he was known to be a fan of Bill Monroe, the bluegrass pioneer. Here, I'm playing it, electrified, on my grandfather's 1956 Gibson ES-125. Enjoy!
Mystery Train Cover - A Tribute to Scotty Moore BlueParadoxical 2016-07-03 | Earlier this week, I heard some sad news. Scotty Moore, famous for his role as the guitarist who played with Elvis Presley from the beginning of the singer's career, had passed away. With Elvis Presley, Bill Black, and, later, D.J. Fontana, Scotty toured in the United States, made records, and eventually shared screen time in some of Elvis's movies. Scotty was also Elvis's manager for a time, and he certainly had a tremendous impact on the singer's career. While many know him for his association with Elvis, Scotty did much more than these things. He was a recording artist and performer in his own right, and he helped others achieve notoriety through his work as a recording engineer and producer. He was a very talented person who the world will miss. However, to me, Scotty is a role model for my guitar playing. While I don't claim to play like him, I certainly cite him as a heavy influence! So, I felt motivated to make this video as a tribute to him. I hope you enjoy my instrumental version of Mystery Train, and I ask you to remember Scotty and keep his family in your prayers. As I said to my mother on the day after his passing, "that's one person that I wish I could have met." It seems that it was solely intended to be brought by "Dorothy" to a couple named John and Anita or "Nita" Holmes who lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The main singer and guitarist, "Gene," was turning 55 years old on the date of this recording, and the tracks reveal that a family reunion was in full swing. It's not clear where the reunion took place, but the family's accents suggest the American South! "Dorothy's Record," as it is titled on some of the labels, includes both secular and gospel songs of the early country / hillbilly genre. Even one of Gene's original songs appears later in the album. It's a real gem, and I don't think I will ever forget the day that I found this fascinating artifact in a Tampa thrift store. The album consists of two acetate discs. They are scratched and old, but they survived in spite of everything! The image in this video was taken by me. This record is a part of my personal collection.
