In todays video, we look into the key differences between high yielding dividend companies and companies with a history of growing dividends, the pros and cons, and which type of investment strategy may be a better choice depending on your financial situation.
The two funds used in this video are VYM and VIG, both are dividend paying Vanguard ETFs with low expense ratios. Links provided below to the referenced materials.

SCHD is one of the most popular etfs on the market, it has a relatively low expense ratio and currently is paying a dividend that is double what a S&P 500 etf is paying out. It is an etf designed to track the Dow Dividends 100 Index, which utilizes various screens to pick companies with strong financial ratios, a history of 10 years or more of dividend payments, as well as offering dividend growth. The etf is composed of primarily large cap value stocks and potentially offers investors protection in bear markets due to the stronger financial fundamentals of the companies included. With that being said, should you buy it? Watch the video to find out more!

ETFs are exchange traded funds, which are a composition or basket of stocks that are typically targeted at following a certain index such as the S&P 500. There are many etf options out there that can follow market sectors or categories such as growth, value, and dividend paying funds. In this video I also show some of the popular ETFs for long term investing with lower than average expense ratio fees.
I am not a financial advisor and this video is for educational purposes only. This video is not a recommendation to buy or sell certain securities, and I always recommend you do your own research and due diligence before buying any stock or investment option.
I consider short term investments to be 5 years personally, but I am specifically referring to capital you may want to grow or set aside in a safe manner. For example, if you have a emergency savings fund, or money you are saving towards a home down payment, you may not want to take on the risk and volatility that investing in stocks will experience. On the other hand, holding cash or keeping all your money in a checking account is going to provide limited growth opportunities, which is where this video comes in. I walk through several investment products such as high yield savings accounts, CDs, and bonds to discuss how they work and which may be best suited for you and your financial goals.
Everyone's specific financial situation will be different, and one investing strategy that suits one person may not be the best for another person. I do my best to present the pros and cons of each option so that you can be informed to make the decision that fits you best. I am not sponsored by any of the products I mentioned in the video, but these are products I have or do use myself.
Always do your own personal research and homework to inform yourself before making any investment decisions. Shown below are the links to the content I referenced.

I made a tool that you can use to calculate theoretical returns based on if you hold cash, or put your money in something like a high yield savings account, bond fund, or a S&P 500 stock market fund. The math shows that if you have a long one period, the returns of investing can significantly outperform other forms of cash management. If you have a shorter time horizon for funds such as money for a house down payment, you may be better off with a less risky investment type such as a CD or high yield savings account though since the stock market is volatile and future returns are never guaranteed.
This video and tool is for educational, theoretical purposes only and is based on historical average returns, your actual specifics and returns may be different. Always do your own research and due diligence to develop a game plan that best fits your own personal financial goals and needs.

Many people love dividend investing and refer to it as a form of passive income, because as a dividend investor you are technically a partial owner of a company, and if that company pays out dividends you are entitled to those dividend payouts. Typically higher dividend paying companies do not have as much capital appreciation in regard to their share price, and on the other hand usually growing companies with increasing share prices usually pay out less in terms of dividends.

Everyone's financial situation will be different, especially depending on how long your investment time horizon is until retirement, but the thought process can still be used and I believe this is important information that everyone should know about to help avoid blindly sticking a portfolio option that may not suit your needs.

What are growth stocks and etfs?
Growth companies are typically defined as a company that is focused on rapidly expanding or growing as a whole. They may not have a positive income and usually have a high valuation or P/E ratios. They are usually riskier investments that can do well in a bull market or when economic conditions are favorable for the particular company. However, these companies tend to sell off substantially during times of economic uncertainty or when the growth company is no longer growing, causing the company or ETF to underperform the overall market. Growth etfs are a composition of multiple growth stocks in a single investment, which can diversify your portfolio and lower your overall risk level.
Value companies are usually considered to have stronger financials with lower price to earnings ratios. These companies tend to pay out dividends and are considered undervalued, the idea behind investing in value stocks and ETFS is to hope for potentially lower overall volatility than growth stocks, or that the value of the stock will be corrected and no longer "under valued". Dividend based investing is a form of value investing that is very popular since it can provide a form of passive income.

In this video I talk about how you can easily create your own monthly budget as well as calculate how much annual income you would need to support your lifestyle. Personal finance is a topic many people may struggle with, but once you dive into it and understand where your money is going and why, it can make a huge difference. It is important to know how you are spending your money in order to create a realistic budget to fit your needs. Everyone’s financial situation w it’ll be different, but I believe that creating a practical budget for yourself can really help set you up for success when it comes to obtaining any economic or financial goals you may have.
The second part of the video talks about how to determine how much income you would need to support your live style in reverse, solving for income using expenses.

I included sample portfolio ideas for a growth, value, dividend, 3 fund, and an IRA. Keep in mind, these are simply suggestions and I currently am not invested in any of these particular portfolios.
This video is for educational purposes to show how you can create a portfolio around ETFs based on your risk tolerances and goals. The allocations and ETFS shown are not a requirement by any means, you can always include something different or change allocations to meet your needs. You can also include value and growth funds in the same portfolio if you wanted to, there are no hard rules when it comes to investing!

The idea is that using an ETF will diversify your risk by "Owning it all" rather than betting on an individual company to outperform the sector or total market. It can also help you save time by not having to worry about keeping up with individual companies and making changes to your portfolio as different companies rotate in and out of favor.
Keep in mind that I am not giving any buy recommendations in this video, and I do not personally own XLE in my portfolio. This video is for education purposes and not financial advice. always do your own research and due diligence before deciding to invest in the stock market.

Strategies that incorporate high dividend paying stocks and etfs typically are centered around using high dividend yields to supplement or replace personal income to help take the load off of your shoulders when it comes time to pay bills or rent. The tradeoff with this strategy is that typically high dividend paying companies and funds do not have as much capital appreciation as companies focused on growing their company and dividends over time.
Dividend growth strategies believe that companies that focus more on having strong financials and a strong record of raising dividend payouts over time can or will outperform higher yielding stocks in the long run.
In this video I will discus the pros and cons of each strategy and why or why not one may be better suited for your financial needs. Keep in mind that reinvesting dividends will allow your portfolio to grow in the long run, but some people may want or need to use their dividends to support their lifestyle now rather than waiting for capital appreciation. Everyone's needs are different and I hope to portray this information in a neutral manner to help inform you the best that I can.
I referenced three dividend funds that I believe offer investors good long term value due to how the etfs have historically performed as well as the screening methods utilized by each fund.
Keep in mind that these recommendations are not buy recommendations, and I am simply sharing tools and investment ideas to help you develop your own financial game plan.
