In this excerpt from our Hand Puppet Detail and Finishing Techniques, Part 2: Eyes, Ears, Noses, & Facial Hair, world-renowned puppeteer and puppet builder BJ Guyer teaches how to straighten and also get different textures from faux fur after it’s been washed. Straightening puppet fur is helpful when it appears crimped, creased, or clumped — ultimately, it's not how you’d prefer it to look. Depending on your application, the techniques discussed can revive fur that is not ideal, ultimately giving it the look of realistic fur.
BJ Guyer explains how to:
- Brush Out Puppet Fur
- Apply Controlled Heat to Faux Fur
- Use a Heat Gun on Fur
- Trim Fake Fur to Add More Texture
- Test Different Creative Techniques on Puppet Fur

To distinguish the T-X endoskeleton from the previous chrome-plated Terminator, Stan Winston’s artists devised a black chrome look inspired by a cigar lighter Winston carried in his pocket. The final T-X endoskeleton also featured blue running lights — as opposed to the original’s red lights — made from bright LEDs and fiber optics.
In this video, John Cherevka is seen working on the Terminatrix (aka T-X) head for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

FULL STORY here: bit.ly/MouseHuntYT
Having just completed work on The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Stan Winston and his crew found themselves working at the other end of the creature size spectrum for director Gore Verbinski's 1997 film, #MouseHunt.
Described as 'Home Alone with a Mouse,' the film involves a fiendishly clever mouse that resists eviction from a house by two ill-meaning heirs, played by Nathan Lane and Lee Evans.
Although real mice and a cat would be intercut with CG versions, many shots of the film's animal characters were achieved with animatronic mouse and cat puppets built by Stan Winston Studio.

Having previously collaborated on Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton and Stan Winston reteamed to create another iconic character for Batman Returns, Burton's second exploration of the Batman mythology after his 1989 film #Batman.
In Batman Returns, the Dark Knight — again played by Michael Keaton — fights attempts by the Penguin (Danny DeVito) to take control of Gotham City. Winston's primary task was to design and build makeup for the Penguin, creating an appropriately over-the-top Burtonesque look without entirely obliterating DeVito's features.

FULL STORY here: bit.ly/ShaggyDogYT
March 2006 saw the release of The Shaggy Dog — a Disney production directed by Brian Robbins — which updated the story of the original The Shaggy Dog, released in 1959. In the new version, Tim Allen portrays a work-consumed father and husband who begins to experience frequent transformations into a shaggy canine named Shaggy after he is bitten by a dog whose DNA has been altered.
Paul Mejias led the assignment, building a puppet version of the shaggy dog for shots that couldn't be obtained with the real bearded collie (a dog named Cole). The Animatronic dog had to cut closeup to closeup with the real dog, so it had to match exactly. It was important because there is nothing worse than shots in movies where they suddenly cut to a puppet, and it's just dead and lifeless.

For Joe Dante’s 1998 film, Small Soldiers, Stan Winston Studio designed and built both the Commando Elite soldiers and the alien Gorgonites, all of which were realized as articulated puppets.
In total, #SmallSoldiers featured fourteen distinct characters: seven types of Gorgonite, six different Commandos, and there was also a parody of the Barbie and Sindy dolls (Sindy was Britian's rival to Barbie): a Gwendy fashion doll.
In this Small Soldiers behind the scenes video, mechanical designer Christian Colquhoun describes how he worked on a particular technique for The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) and used it for the Gwendy attack effect in Small Soldiers.

Drawing over Mark "Crash" McCreery’s sketches with colored pencils, Joe Orosco devised the Spinosaur’s bright red coloring, going for a bold look that would be exhibited in the movie’s other dinosaurs, as well.
“Everybody went a little wild on Jurassic Park III’s dinosaurs. We wound up putting quills on the Raptors — all kinds of things. We knew it was probably going to be the last Jurassic Park movie, so we just went for it.”
Once design issues had been settled, Joe Orosco, John Rosengrant, Trevor Hensley, Rob Ramsdell, and Paul Mejias produced an eight-foot-long, one-fifth-scale Spinosaur maquette. As before, full-scale computer-milled foam pieces, created from a cyber scan of the maquette, formed the basis for the full-size animatronic.
In this video, you can see the Stan Winston Studio crew members, Joey Orosco, Andy Schoneberg, Trevor Hensley, and Shane Mahan sculpt fine details into the computer-milled foam Spinosaur.

Jurassic Park's "Velociraptors in the Kitchen" sequence terrified audiences with its prehistoric twist on a cat-and-mouse game. The scene remains a cinema classic, featuring a groundbreaking blend of Stan Winston Studio's practical creature effects, men in suits, puppetry & Industrial Light & Magic's CGI, combined with Steven Spielberg's directorial skills at his tension-building finest.
The kitchen Raptor attack scene used a number of #Raptor puppets and rigs. Some shots featured John Rosengrant and Mark 'Crash' McCreery in the Raptor suits. For other shots, a Raptor puppet was attached to a rod through a slot in the floor and moved on a dolly below the kitchen set. Sometimes, when kitchen countertops hid parts of the Raptor from the frame, the crew used the Raptor insert heads or half-puppets mounted to dollies.
In this short video, you can see the walking Raptor leg rig test with John Rosengrant inside the rig for #JurassicPark's iconic kitchen scene.

Watch how Stan Winston Studio Created T-1000 Effects for Terminator 2: Judgment Day!
FULL STORY here: http://bit.ly/T2T1000FxYT
Although Stan Winston Studio vastly improved upon the techniques used to create the T-800 endoskeleton effects in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, they would be breaking all new ground with the unprecedented T-1000 liquid metal effects.
“The endoskeletons, which had been the big deal on #Terminator, were the least of our problems on Terminator 2,” said SWS supervisor and Co-Founder of Legacy Effects, John Rosengrant. “By far, the most challenging things we did for Terminator 2 were these physical effects involving the T-1000 character. We did a lot of in-camera magic tricks for that - splitting open bodies, finger blades, heads blowing open, bullet-hit wounds. Every day, there was something new and challenging to do.”

Stan Winston Studio built five T-1s for the sequence at CRS headquarters in #Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, two of which were fully functional hydraulic robots. They were hydraulically powered machines that could spin around, drive, and do all kinds of things.
The final assembled T-1s stood seven feet tall, weighed 3500 pounds, and featured articulated heads and arms, and turning turrets. The T-1s could travel seven miles per hour on their tank tracks, which were procured from an outside vendor.

Although Stan Winston Studio created multiple raptors for JURASSIC PARK, including full-size cable-controlled puppets, half-puppets, and insert legs, some Raptor shots were most efficiently captured with a man in a suit. SWS supervisor John Rosengrant was pegged as the main Raptor suit performer, with SWS concept designer Mark “Crash” McCreery also pitching in when the shot required two raptors.
In this video, you can see one of the first Velociraptor suit tests with John Rosengrant. It was an L200 foam fabricated "garbage bag test," where the Stan Winston Studio team members realized that the suit was very organic and mobile. You can see the finished suit in several scenes in Jurassic Park, for example, in the kitchen scene.
