Amtraks Auto Train - Americas Longest Passenger Train

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-09-29 | 4K - The Auto Train is arguably one of the most unique passenger trains in North America. Running overnight daily service between Virginia and Florida, it provides an easy alternative for East Coast travellers, seeking to avoid the I-95. Originally started as a private entity in the 1970's, Amtrak has been running this service since the 1980's, with great success.

Featured are various shots of the Auto Train along the CSX RF&P Subdivision in Northern Virginia, throughout 2022 and 2023. One of my favorite trains to shoot, not only due to the unique consist, but some vintage P40's, which are pooled for this rotation!

Norfolk Southern Freight Trains on the Northeast Corridor

High Speed Trains on the “New Jersey Raceway”

Known as the "raceway," this section of line offers some of the fastest running on the NEC, with speeds up to 150 MPH. Both Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains are seen passing through here, along with the NJT Princeton Dinky, running as a shuttle service between Princeton University and the station.

MARC HHP-8s in Action!

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-08-25 | 4K - MARC Bombardier HHP-8's in action on the Penn Line, in 2022 and 2023. These unique engines have slowly dwindled on the Northeast Corridor, and with only 6 left on the roster for MARC, it's not an often piece of equipment to catch. 21 of these electric locomotives were made in the early 2000's by Bombardier, both in service with Amtrak and MARC. Over the years, they have unfortunately been plagued with all sorts of mechanical issues, leading to their early retirement and eventual replacement on Amtrak service. Regardless, a very unique piece of equipment to see in 2023!

BNSF Freight Trains in the Mojave Desert

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-08-18 | 4K - Compilation of high speed BNSF freight trains along the Cajon Subdivision, in early 2023. Running from San Bernardino to Barstow, and over the Cajon Pass, the BNSF Cajon Subdivision has a variety of scenery and topography changes along the line. From the steep, slow grades of the Cajon Pass, to the high speed desert running north of Victorville, the line offers a variety of train watching opportunities.

In this video, we'll focus on the section between Helendale and Victorville. Managed to get some good action during a variety of visits to the area.

End of the Line for Coaster F59PHIs

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-08-11 | 4K - With the recent delivery and acceptance of four Siemens Charger locomotives, the future is uncertain for the two remaining EMD F59PHI locomotives on the Coaster. After years of deferred maintenance and "state of good repair" neglect by NCTD, it's sad to say these two workhorses sure have seen their better days long ago. While it is not official these two locomotives have been retired, it's safe to say they won't be seeing daily or often use. The future is also uncertain for two of Coaster's brand new Charger locomotives, which are slated to be sold to an unknown organization, due to North County Transit District's budgeting woes.

In this video, you'll see the 3001 and 3002 in action during their final weeks and months in normal service on the Coaster.

Extreme BNSF Trains in the Columbia River Gorge

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-08-04 | 4K - One of the finest places to watch BNSF freight train action in the Pacific Northwest, is the Columbia River Gorge. Forming as a "natural border" between the states of Washington and Oregon, the Columbia River is also home to the BNSF Fallbridge Subdivision, on the north shore of the river. With plentiful train action, and endless scenic vistas, it's no wonder why it's a popular destination for some train watching.

Also included are two bonus shots from the Oregon Trunk Subdivision. Stretching from the south side of the Columbia River near Wishram, the Oregon Trunk provides a vital North/South link for BNSF trains traveling to California and the Pacific Northwest.

A Busy Day of Trains at Rondout, Illinois

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-07-14 | Located about 45 minutes north of Chicago is Rondout, Illinois. Located along the Canadian Pacific C&M Subdivision, Rondout is a popular rail fanning spot due to the plentiful train action, and unique train watching vantage points around the location.

In September 2022 I had the opportunity to visit Rondout for the morning and evening, catching some the peak rush hour train action. Majority of the action here was Metra and Amtrak's Hiawatha trains, with some Canadian Pacific freights making occasional appearances. Lots of track work and track blocks going on during this time, as we quickly approach the end of Summer. As of filming, the replacement signals were about to go up, ending the searchlights service at this location.

Also included are a few bonus shots from December 2021, as well as two bonus shots from CP Morgan in Downtown Chicago.

Odakyu-Odawara Line Trains in Tokyo, Japan

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-07-09 | 4K - Featured on Microsoft Train Simulator, the Odakyu-Odawara Line is a familiar face to those who great up with this timeless game! Operated by the Odakyu Electric Railway, the line runs between the Tokyo district of Shinjuku, through the suburbs to the city of Odawara to the South.

On this particular short trip to Tokyo, I made it a priority to visit this line. After running them on the MSTS program, it's neat to see the Series 2000 trainsets in person after all of these years!

High Speed Japanese Shinkansen Trains!

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-06-16 | 4K - Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit Japan. With this being my first time visiting, trains were definitely on the list to see! Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing some of my catches that I was able to get. First up, is exploring the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen route.

I visited 5 different stations along the route, where action is more than plentiful. Every few minutes there’s a train, most of which we’re expressing through these specific stations. Very cool to experience seeing the Shinkansen in person!

Snow Trains in Northern Illinois - Winter 2023

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-03-24 | Back in early March of 2023, a late Winter storm swept through the Midwest, causing for some late season snowfall in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. I happened to be in the area, and took advantage of the snowy conditions for some train action. Focused most of my attention on the Canadian Pacific C&M Subdivision, as well as the nearby Canadian National Waukesha Sub. Managed to get a handful of freights on both subdivisions, as well as the usual Amtrak and Metra train action.

A Day of Fast Trains on the CN Kingston Subdivision

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-02-10 | The main rail line between Toronto and Montreal, CN's Kingston Subdivision is one the busiest sections of rail traffic in Canada. With both CN freight trains heading to/from Montreal, and VIA Rail Corridor trains, it's easy to see why. In December 2022, I made the journey back to the Kingston Sub for the day, to explore some new locations. While the traffic wasn't the busiest it could've been, it was still a fun day! Footage from Port Hope to Pickering, Ontario.

Endless Train Action on the GO Lakeshore Corridor (Oakville Subdivision)

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-01-27 | GO, VIA, CN, and Amtrak trains along the very busy Metrolinx Oakville Subdivision. More commonly known as the GO Lakeshore West line, this 82 mile line is the busiest in the GO network, and one of the most heavily traveled rail lines in all of Canada. Trains are scheduled to run as much as every 15 minutes during rush hour, but its not uncommon to see trains every few minutes or better.

During early December 2022, I spent a few days along this busy corridor. Various shots from the Sunnyside area of Toronto, the Union Station Rail Corridor in Downtown Toronto, as well as around Oakville, Burlington, and CN's Bayview Junction.

GO Transit EMD F59PHs around Toronto

MichaelLovesTrains 2023-01-13 | Running strong in 2022, GO Transit's last few remaining EMD F59PH locomotives are still in service around the Greater Toronto Area. In early December of 2022, I made a quick trip over to the Toronto area, and made it a priority to catch these locomotives. Needless to say, I'm very pleased with the outcome! Managed to get a handful of shots of these locomotives on the Niagara Falls weekend trains, as well as the London (Kitchener line) trains.

Portland, Oregon Trains in October 2022

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-12-16 | Various trains in the Portland, Oregon area in October 2022. Made a trip to Portland, managed to get some decent action around the area! Interesting series of power on the BNSF and UP, quite a handful of fallen flags floating around the area. Some highlights include a transfer job from Vancouver to Lake Yard, with a ex-BN SD60M on point, a former SP GP60 on the Kenton Line, and the WES commuter rail, using some cool Colorado Railcar DMU's.

Probably my favorite catch of the trip was down in Albany, Oregon, on the Portland and Western. EMD SD9 #1852, is a 1955 built EMD SD9 delivered to the Southern Pacific railroad. Purchased by the Willamette and Pacific Railroad, it's currently used as a yard switcher by the P&W. We were driving through the area, heard an M3 horn, and bolted to the tracks! Totally didn't expect to see this, so a real treat!

Evening Rush Hour Trains at Seattles King Street Station

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-12-02 | On a cool October afternoon, I decided to spend an afternoon of train watching at the King Street Station, in Seattle, WA. King Street Station is the "main station" in Seattle, which provides some great opportunities to get some busy action in the afternoon hours. Amtrak and Sounder trains are stored to the immediate South of here, at their Holgate yard, which provides opportunities to see their deadhead moves in and out.

Many old cabcars on Sounder have been roaming around lately, with a large chunk of their coaches out of service for "maintenance." Sure is strange to see some many dormant cars around the Holgate yard. Also managed to get some BNSF movements in the mix, as well as some Boeing 737 MAX fuselages on a local heading down towards Renton, always a treat to see!

Amtrak Cascades on the Puget Sound - One Year Later

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-11-18 | BNSF's Seattle Subdivision is known for some of the best scenery in the Pacific Northwest. For approximately 15 miles from Tacoma to Nisqually, the Seattle Subdivision runs along the banks of the Puget Sound, providing some spectacular running. Along with the usual freight traffic on the line, Amtrak trains traversed this section enroute to Seattle and Portland. With increased freight and passenger traffic over the years, Amtrak trains were frequently held up on this section of line, causing lengthy delays.

The solution, was transferring all passenger traffic to the Point Defiance Bypass. Owned and rehabilitated by Sound Transit, this far less scenic route provides about 10 minutes of saved running time between Olympia and Tacoma. Originally opened in mid-Decmber 2017, the crash and derailment of Amtrak 501 in DuPont put a quick end to trains running on the line, and all trains reverted back to the shore route for the time being.

From December of 2017 to November of 2021, Amtrak trains continued to run on the shore route. Finally on Thursday, November 18th 2021, Amtrak trains returned to the Point Defiance Bypass, ending the many years of running on the shore route. Today marks one year of the switchover, so I thought it would be fitting to look back at a route that once was for passenger trains.

Cumbres & Toltec Steam Freight Train in Autumn Colors

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-10-21 | In October of 2020, I made a visit to the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, located along the New Mexico/Colorado state line. Traversing some of the most rugged mountain railroad terrain in North America, the Cumbres and Toltec has always been on the bucket list for seeing in person. Being the first week of October, and with the presence of fall colors in their peak, it was a perfect opportunity to see this historic steam railroad in action.

After chasing the passenger train up the pass, I heard rumblings there was a "training" freight train about to head up towards Cumbres, used for training some new crew members. Turned out the talk of the town was true, and out came the freight extra. CTS 487, a 1925 built K-36 Mikado class locomotive, was in charge of the freight extra. The train ran up the pass, then using the wye at Cumbres, Colorado in some beautiful golden hour light. Definitely awesome to see a freight train, and surely didn't expect this surprise!

Autumn on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-10-14 | Fall is here, and with that beautiful fall foliage has returned! In October of 2020, I made a visit to the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, located along the New Mexico/Colorado state line. Definitely one of the most memorable chases I've ever done!

CTS 488, a 1925 built K-36 Mikado class locomotive, was in charge of this day's passenger excursion run. With Cumbres being one of the few steam operators still using coal, the 488 was working hard pulling the train up the 10,000 ft elevation Cumbres Pass.

In this video, you'll see footage as we follow the train from Chama, New Mexico, to Cumbres Pass, Colorado in the San Juan mountain range.

Reading and Northern F Units in Action!

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-09-16 | In the final instalment of exploring the Reading and Northern, we'll explore Pennsylvania's Lehigh Gorge near Jim Thorpe. Featured, are Reading and Northern's EMD F9A & F7B units in action, as they power the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway out of Jim Thorpe, PA. Normal power on the LGSR consists of various freight power, so seeing the F Units out and about was a very nice treat!

These units are newer to the Reading and Northern fleet, and are used on various holidays and special occasions on the system. Before being bought by the R&N, the duo was owned by Norfolk Southern, and was used for their executive and officer car trains.

Several runs a day of the LGSR are made, creating many possibilities to see the train in various parts of the Lehigh Gorge. Speeds really pick up towards the middle part of the ride, creating some really awesome roll-bys!

Reading & Northern #2102 on the 2022 Iron Horse Rambles

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-09-02 | The return of Reading and Northern T-1 #2102 in Pennsylvania!

On August 13, 2022, No. 425 double headed with No. 2102 for the first time since 1988 to pull the Iron Horse Ramble train from Reading to Jim Thorpe and back. One of the cooler chases I have done to date, with both locomotives working hard up the grades of the line around Tamaqua! In addition to the clips from August, also included are shots from July 2nd, with the 2102 solo pulling the excursion train to Jim Thorpe.

I have to say it's pretty awesome seeing this steam locomotive completely restored to "as delivered" condition working hard, especially without diesel power in the consist! Gotta give credit and thanks to the folks at Reading and Northern for putting on such a fun excursion chase, and restoration of the 2102!

High Speed Amtrak Trains on the Keystone Corridor!

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-08-19 | Running through the heart of Pennsylvania between Harrisburg and Philladelphia, Amtrak's Keystone Corridor sure is a unique electrified operation outside of the Northeast Corridor! The Keystone Corridor has been on my list for a long while, so it was great to be able to experience it earlier this year!

One of the unique things about this line, are the use of the ex-Metroliner Amtrak cabcars. These cabcars used to roam the Surfline on the San Diegan trains throughout the 1990's. This is my first time seeing these cabcars in person, so it was a real treat to get a few shots of them! Power along this line are the standard ACS-64 electric locomotives, however diesel P42DC power is used on the twice daily Pennsylvanian train. Norfolk Southern freight traffic is far and few on this line, mostly in the form of local freights. However in Middletown, NS freight trains are seen paralleling the line, as they make their way to the NS Port Road branch.

Also included at the end, are two bonus shots of the Elizabethtown Industrial Railroad. Based at the Elizabethtown Industrial Park, this operation interchanges with the NS along the Keystone Corridor. A former CP GP9u lettered for the Clinton Terminal Railroad, is used for power. This operation only runs on a rather limited basis, so it was cool to be able to stumble into it!

An Afternoon of Trains in Washington D.C.

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-08-05 | Earlier this Summer, I had an opportunity to spend an afternoon along the CSX tracks in Arlington, Virginia. Located across the Potomac River from Washington DC, R.O Junction is perfect for an afternoon of passenger train rush hour traffic. Virginia Railway Express and various Amtrak trains are the bulk of the traffic here, with CSX sending in some occasional freight trains. First time shooting the VRE trains, and have to say it's an interesting operation!

RO Junction has always been on my list to visit, especially with its proximity to Reagan National Airport (DCA). Not too many places you can planespot and train watch at the same time, sometimes with perfect timing of the two!

Busy Train Action around Orange County, California

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-07-22 | Located just south of Los Angeles, Orange County is home to a variety of different train action. From the typical Amtrak and Metrolink trains running on the core Surfline route, to various freight locals, there's something for everyone. Some cool throwbacks are included, featuring the now mostly retired Metrolink EMD F59PH power, as well as a BNSF windmill train!

I've compiled some shots from the past few years around the county from San Juan Capistrano up to Fullerton. All locations listed in video.

Amtrak F40PHR 281 at the California State Railroad Museum

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-07-15 | Twenty years after being retired from revenue service, Amtrak EMD F40PHR 281 is still running strong at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. With the museum hosting a variety of historic railcars and locomotives, the Sacramento Southern Railroad also offers weekend excursion train rides along the banks of the Sacramento River. Traveling to and from the museum, the Amtrak 281 happened to be running on this particular day.

With everything working out perfectly, I had an opportunity to see the 281 one Spring morning in 2022. While 281 was turned long hood forward for the Southbound runs, it was excellent to see and hear it running in person!

Extreme Canadian Freight Trains in the Thompson River Canyon

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-07-08 | Located just over 200 miles East of Vancouver, the Thompson and Frazer River Canyons offer some of the finest viewing of Canadian railroading. Hosting both of the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific mainlines, as well as the Trans Canada Highway, it's easy to see how this route is vital to connecting goods and people across Canada.

The two subdivisions are the CN Ashcroft Subdivision, and the CP Thompson Subdivision. Both lines partake in an interesting railroading practice called "directional running." In this case, both rail companies use each others rail lines, depending on the direction they are heading. In most cases, westbound trains to Vancouver use the CN mainline, while eastbound trains towards Calgary use the CP mainline. With the Trans Canada Highway splitting between both rail lines, train watching and chasing is a rather easy and fun task. Train action is plentiful here, with something coming at least every 30 minutes or better. In addition to the predominant freight traffic, VIA Rail's Canadian uses this route, as well as the Rocky Mountaineer tourist train, as shown in this video.

This footage was shot in the Summer of 2018. In mid-2021, devastating wildfires tore through a significant section of this area. The majority of the town of Lytton was basically destroyed by the fire, in addition to the CN river bridge significantly burned and damaged. Later that year, mudslides roared through the Thompson River canyon, causing yet another setback for the already decimated area. Locations such as Tank Hill were changed forever, with significant portions of the CP mainline and Trans Canada Highway now sliding into the Thompson River. While this area is finally in the recovery phase, it's safe to say portions of this area won't look the same for a while.

Visiting the West Coast Express in Vancouver, BC

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-07-01 | Located on the Western Coast of Canada, Vancouver offers some of the most scenic surroundings in all of North America, both for recreational and train watching opportunities. It's also known for some pretty interesting train watching opportunities.

Three major Class I freight railroads make their way through the "lower mainland," in addition to smaller short-line railroads. On the passenger side, Translink's West Coast Express operates on the CP Cascade Subdivision, offering a cool look at this rather undershot operation. Amtrak Cascades, VIA Rail's Canadian, and Rocky Mountaineer round up the passenger trains.

In this throwback from the Summer of 2018, you'll see various West Coast Express, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and a bonus appearance from VIA Rail's Canadian. I focused mostly on the morning and evening rail operations along the CP Mainline, with some shots from the CN Mainline in Fort Langley. Locations all listed in the video.

Located 60 miles East of Los Angeles in the San Bernardino Mountain Range, the world famous Cajon Pass is known for it scenic, intense, and steep railroad action. A natural dividing barrier between Victorville and San Bernardino, Union Pacific, BNSF trains, and vehicular traffic traverse the 2.2% grades of the pass. BNSF's Cajon Subdivision offers 3 mainline tracks that both BNSF and Union Pacific trains use, while the Union Pacific also hosts its Palmdale Cutoff Mojave Subdivision line, exclusively for their trains. The Cajon Pass is one the more remote areas in Southern California, providing a nice break of trainwatching in a peaceful setting.

Running between Barstow and San Bernardino, BNSF's Cajon Subdivision is the main trafficked route, providing three main tracks over the pass. In addition, the Union Pacific's Palmdale Cutoff provides routing through the pass, offering access to the West Colton Yard and points north towards Mojave and Central California. In addition to BNSF trains on their respective subdivision, Union Pacific has trackage rights in order to access their LASL line in Daggett, towards Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.

Northern California Train Action - Spring 2022

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-05-20 | Various Amtrak California and Union Pacific train action along the UP Martinez Subdivision throughout the Spring of 2022. Lots of rain early on produced some very nice green scenery throughout the Spring, with the greenery lasting longer than usual! In addition to the nice surroundings, Amtrak California has been running most of their F59PHI's, which is a very welcome sight!

Focused most of the coverage along the shore of the San Pablo Bay on the Martinez Sub. Lots of action here from Amtrak, not as much from Union Pacific. Also included two shots from the BNSF Stockton Sub, of some San Joaquin trains.

San Diego Freight Trains - BNSF & Pacific Sun Railroad

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-05-06 | Compilation of daylight BNSF and Pacific Sun Freight Trains throughout San Diego County. From County Line to Downtown San Diego, pretty much most of the Surfline throughout San Diego County is covered in this video! Footage is from various times from 2017-2021.

On any given night, BNSF manifest and autorack trains rumble in and out of San Diego on the Surfline. From time to time, a late running train will offer some unique shots along the Surfline in the daytime. In addition to the typical BNSF vehicle trains that frequent every night, I caught some rather unusual movements from both railroads. Featured from the BNSF, are various GEO Inspection trains, ballast trains, military trains, and an officers special as well!

TriRail Trains in South Florida - 2020

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-04-29 | South Florida may be well known for its beautiful Beaches and Sunny weather, but it's also a great hotspot for trains! One of the many trains that run in the South Florida Miami area, is the Tri-Rail. Running between Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, the TriRail is a commuter rail service providing links between these busy metro areas.

TriRail has some real interesting equipment, some with really interesting backgrounds. One example are the original UTDC built cabcars, 501-506. These 6 cabcars were part of the original order for TriRail back in the late 1980's. Originally designed as a temporary commuter service, the cars were built specified for GO Transit in Canada, as they were to be delivered there after the trial run in Miami. Needless to say, the service proved popular in Florida, and so they stayed. Really cool to see these in operation still!

High Speed Trains on Amtraks Northeast Corridor! (NEC)

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-04-15 | If you're looking for high speed train action, then Amtrak's Northeast Corridor is the heart of "High Speed Rail" in the United States. Running between Washington, DC and Boston, the NEC provides a vital link between various major metropolitan areas. The NEC has been on my list for some time, so it was more than appropriete to pay a visit. Shots are from various parts of Maryland, from Perryville, down towards the Washington DC area.

Amtrak trains are the main feature along this line, with a handful of MARC passenger trains. From time to time, you'll also see CSX and NS freights traversing the NEC at various hours. The Acela Express has to be my favorite hands down, I look forward to seeing it more in the near future!

The New Face of Coaster - Siemens SC-44 Chargers

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-04-08 | In February 2021, the North County Transit District inaugurated their Siemens SC-44 Charger locomotives, for service on the Coaster. These initial five locomotives replaced the MK F40PHM-2C locomotives, of which were in service since the beginning in 1995. In addition to the locomotive replacement, NCTD has also implemented a “renewal” program on their railcars, with each getting a fresh coat of paint and some much needed maintenance.

Since this has occurred, the Coaster has not looked, or even sounded the same. Many railcars are wrapped with advertising, in some cases there are more wrapped coaches than regularly painted coaches. Cabcars have had most of their original mechanical bells replaced, in favor for the more “louder” E-Bells. As of publish date, two cabcars have been “refurbished”, of which are 2309 and 2310. Two additional cabcars, 2301 and 2302, are also in the "Phase 2" livery, however instead of being refurbished and repainted property, wraps have been applied to these cabcars, of which are peeling off. Most of the trains have been running with the SC-44 Chargers, however due to lack of maintenance and breakdowns, its a common sight to see the two remaining EMD F59PHI locomotives powering some trains.

In this video, you’ll see various Coaster trains from Downtown San Diego to Carlsbad, CA. It’s very strange to see this once proud railroad in this sorry state, but as is life, change will always happen.

BNSF Seattle Sub Train Action - March 2022

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-04-01 | Another month done, another month of trains on the Seattle Subdivision. Various BNSF, Amtrak Cascades, and Sounder trains along the BNSF Seattle and Scenic Subdivisions throughout March of 2022.

Notable interest includes the EVEROO Garbage Trains, providing BNSF 181 as power. Nice weather this particular weekend it was running, took the opportunity to have a short chase between Kent and Steilacoom. As always in the Pacific Northwest, nice weather days come far and few in the Winter, so took advantage of some nice weather days to get out. Included as a bonus, are a few shots from the Scenic Sub in Downtown Seattle.

Alaska Railroad Aurora Winter Train: Fairbanks - Anchorage

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-03-25 | Running between Anchorage and Fairbanks along the Alaska Railroad route, the Aurora Winter Train provides a vital rail connection between these two major Alaskan cities. Winters this far North can be brutal to say the least, making this train extremely important for passengers and cargo.

The majority of passenger train traffic on the ARR is in the Summer months, mostly between May and September. In the meantime, the Aurora Winter Train is the only passenger train operating on the ARR. We first chased the train North on Saturday, and then chasing the train South on Sunday from Fairbanks to just north of Wasilla. One of the most scenic rail routes I've ever seen, let alone the drive too!

The Last Frontier: Alaska Railroad Freight Train Action

MichaelLovesTrains 2022-03-18 | Known as "The Last Frontier," the State of Alaska offers unmatched rugged scenery and a tough climate to handle. Running through the heart of the state, is the Alaska Railroad. The main line runs between Fairbanks and Anchorage, with further connections to the Ocean at Seward and Whittier to the South. Most of the main freight trains use EMD SD70MAC power, with the GP38 power usually used for MOW trains.

Alaska has been on my bucket list to visit, and in October 2021, I had the opportunity to visit for a handful of days. In this video, I explored the areas mainly between Wasilla and Anchorage. On these particular days, the ARR was running gravel trains from the various mine pits to the North, for export and use to the South. The Fairbanks to Anchorage manifest runs during the late night hours, which is why Summer is a prime time to see them in action.

I look forward to returning to Alaska in the near future and exploring more!
