This song honors Oxum, the Orisha/goddess of rivers, waterfalls, and fresh water, and a symbol of fertility, beauty, and wealth in the Afro-Brazilian religion candomblé. The ijexá groove creates a chant-like and meditative setting to evoke Oxum, as the lyrics describe the way she enchants those around her, from the fish in the water to any human lucky enough to catch a glimpse of her. We often find inspiration for our music in the stories of the orixas and in nature itself, and were so happy to have Natalie’s sister, Julianna, bring her spirit to life.

Curandeiro (“The Healer”) speaks of the myriad ways in which he cures: with the forest, the ocean, the sky, his pain, his faith, the meat of the caju fruit, tabaco, cachaça, as well as indigenous herbs and medicines. In the song he is championing his way of life, as an indigenous healer of the Mundukuru people of the Amazon, who live very in touch with nature, attentive to its signs and changes. The connection with nature and the importance of preserving the rainforest and indigenous culture is a major theme across several songs that Ian and Iara Ferreira, the lyricist, have collaborated on. As Ian was composing the music, he was unaware that he had written it in an odd meter time signature. Most of the song is in eleven.

Lee Pardini - This track was written more or less as an excuse to collaborate with two of the funkiest people I know, Theo Katzman and Joe Dart. Everything they touch is funky and I knew they would breathe so much life into this music. The influence of Japanese music, specifically the Yellow Magic Orchestra, is most overt here. I wanted a hard groove, but also pushed myself to keep things simple in both melody and harmony. I didn’t want any distractions from what in my opinion is a pretty infectious rhythm, and with the expertise of Katzman and Dart, Leon Keys came to life.

The title translates to the blessing of Iansá, the orixa/goddess of winds, storms, lightning, and fire. The song personifies her as a storm (“tempestade”) as she is wild and unpredictable. She is tied to the sprits of the dead and is sought in times of difficulty to lead her followers through painful transitions in life. The layers of vocals were intended to conjure up an image of waves crashing ashore from the sea, over the driving samba rhythm.

Zach Brock - The entire recording was in a holding pattern when the pandemic reached the United States. I wasn’t finished writing and didn’t know if we would ever get the chance to play music together again. Thankfully the chance presented itself in January of ’22 and suddenly we had a small window of dates at an amazing venue where we could record audio and video (Sony Hall in NYC). But I still didn’t have a song. As I dove back into the quintet material we had already recorded the song seemed to emerge almost fully formed. We tracked “The Last Song” live with me on violin, Justin Stanton on keyboards, Mark Lettieri on guitar, Jonathan Maron on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. The final track and video was funded through the generous donations of our friends and fans and facilitated by GroundUP Music and Sony Hall.

Zach Brock - This song was mostly written on a portable MIDI keyboard and sequencer while flying across the country. I had been doing a lot of touring with Snarky Puppy that year and I was inspired to embrace sounds that I had avoided on my previous recordings. I was imagining new music that was louder, funkier, still subtly complex, but also unpretentious. Instead of tiptoeing the line between acoustic and electric as I often have in the past I was now prepared to go all-in with electric instruments and effects. I didn’t care if people knew that a particular sound was being made by a violin anymore. I had to change some things in my mind to allow myself to hear the music. It was time to get dirty.

Becca Stevens - "Nathan Schram arranged this Radiohead song for a group he used to play in called Bryant Park Quartet and adapted it to include vocals for our Mainly Mozart concert in San Diego back in 2014. The plan was for our set in San Diego to be purely arrangements of my original music, but when we realized we were both massive Radiohead/Thom Yorke fans this song was added last minute. Geeking out over Radiohead was one of the first things we bonded over when we met, and eventually our first date was to an Atoms For Peace show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. I've always been a huge fan of this string arrangement. I enjoy the simmering intensity of it, blasting off into raucous tension and explosive angst. I love what it brings out of the strings, and I really enjoy singing it. It features a part of my voice and character that doesn’t come out in my own writing very often. This is one of the first string quartet arrangements that Nathan ever wrote which is a testament to how strong of a voice he has as an arranger and composer.”

Natalie Cressman - "The title translates to “grating the coconut”, and is a reference to the afro-brazilian dance and rhythm called “coco”, which originated in the northeast of Brazil. Ian wrote the music as a variation on a Guinga song called “O coco do coco”. The rapid-fire lyrics and unrelenting style of singing is also typical to coco and known as “embolada”, which literally translates to “entangling”. The lyrics reflect the festive setting, the driving beat, and coco’s roots in capoeira and other afro-brazilian cultural traditions."

We tried half a dozen pianos, several drummers and approaches, but in the end I think that Michael McDonald was the soul we needed! What a love-bomb of musical mastery. It is an absurd dream and honor that he graced us with his musicianship. Louis Cato plays a shuffle like no other, and David Cutler plays his signature bass stank. Mathilde Retailleau edited together this beautiful collection of footage shot in the making of this track and general studio madness. Hope you love it!

Becca Stevens - "This song is a setting of a poem by Jane Tyson Clement. When I first read this poem it brought me to tears. I pictured Jane at the end of her life looking back with bittersweet acceptance of the loss of someone very close to her, maybe her husband (Bob). I found out after I’d set the poem that Jane actually wrote this poem when she was in her early twenties, before she even met the man who she would eventually marry. To me this is one of the marks of great writing: when a body of text can mean different things to different people. The text can time travel, evolve, and live comfortably in the imagined world of every reader."

Michelle Willis - I wrote "Liberty" on my last trip to New York before I moved there. I was questioning how much my need of change was just green grass chasing. I was falling more and more in love with the city, seeing myself there, while still carrying memory, grudges and hopes deferred from home. I was thinking about all the people for whom the Statue of Liberty was a beacon of hope, new life, new chances, but upon getting here their lives were far from the dream, and yet I couldn’t help but fall for the energy of the city (edit: five years on, I’m still very much in love with NYC). The vocal harmonies here may as well have been taken from a Michael McDonald background vocal arranging class. I’m certain that subconsciously I was writing with his voice and style in mind. In the outro it’s both him and my mentor and friend David Crosby singing “a city takes me by storm”, which is a beautiful beckoning to me of all that was to come. I had no idea I was about to begin a career writing and touring with Croz.
