The photographs that almost made it--the shots that were a beat away from being on the cover of Rolling Stone or Vanity Fair; the ones that almost landed in the fashion campaign or the album liner notes. B-SIDES 002 | George Harrison Mark Seliger 2021-02-23 | I was told George Harrison was reluctant to be included in Rolling Stone’s 25th-anniversary portfolio in 1992—something about a mixed review of his 1974 album Dark Horse. He eventually agreed to a quick, simple portrait, but I wanted so badly to win him over. I knew he was an avid gardener and I had a deep appreciation of Paul Caponigro’s photographs of sunflowers, so I planned to bring some. A few days before our session, I did a shoot with Tom Petty for the same issue. When I told him George was on the fence, he said that the way to win George over was to bring ukuleles. I brought 5. George was quiet but a willing participant. And after the shoot was over, as a gift, he picked up the Martin ukulele and played 20 minutes of Hawaiian love songs for us. The entire team sat down and listened to him. When we were finished, he turned to me and said “we’ll meet someday on the avenue,” and headed to his car with the ukulele—which happened to be the most expensive one. When I told him it was a rental, he said with a wink, “You can bill Jann Wenner,” Rolling Stone’s editor-in-chief.
B-SIDES 002 | Santana Mark Seliger 2021-02-23 | My number one rule for photographing a guitar player is to have a guitar so that they have something to do. When Carlos Santana picked this one up, his entire demeanor changed to the most joyful, loving, childlike spirit. It was like he was holding a baby. This was in San Francisco, in 1992, between his 25-Year Celebration Tour the previous year and the Santana/Bob Dylan tour the following year. And here he was, this absolute icon, performing a little concert for us in the studio. It was a gift.
B-SIDES 002 | Patti Smith Mark Seliger 2021-02-23 | Patti Smith showed up at my studio in 2007 for a Rolling Stone photoshoot looking like a photographer’s dream with her wide-brimmed hat, long black coat, and shoes dangling around her neck. I thought some cool stylist had put together this perfect silhouette, but this was just Patti right off the street. This shot is a beat away from the one that was published in RS. It’s the moment she let her guard down. There was no self-consciousness; she just was. I had long been in awe of her music and writing, but this shoot added new dimensions to my appreciation. Her presence was really balancing for me and I’m reminded of that when I look at this portrait.
B-SIDES 002 | David Bowie Mark Seliger 2021-02-23 | During photoshoots, you don’t always have a moment to experience what it’s like to actually be there. You’re working, running around, trying to get the job done. That was the case when I photographed David Bowie at Chicago’s Uptown Snack Shop in 2004. This shot was taken after we had wrapped and everyone else had left. It was just me and David having a moment. He looks like a rockabilly Roy Orbison-type here, but this was really just him, relaxing and talking music after a long day on tour and on set.
B-SIDES 002 | Keith Richards Mark Seliger 2021-02-23 | The first time I photographed The Rolling Stones, it was for their 1993 album Voodoo Lounge. They were deep into releasing the record and planning a world tour, which is a vulnerable moment for musicians. It was important to create a kind of trusting collaboration with the band. Keith was upstairs listening to the mixes while Mick, Charlie, and Ronnie were waiting for him to come down for the group shots, so we did the individual portraits first. When Keith came down, he got in front of the camera and just went. He was like this vaudevillian performer, but his sense of performance isn’t contrived or contrary to who he really is. What you see is what you get. And what you get is 50% wise man, 50% wise guy. He’s a total original.

In December we launched this series as a way to generate awareness and revenue for New York Cares, the grassroots nonprofit that has sourced, trained and placed volunteers throughout the city since 1987 - almost as long as I've called this city home. B-Sides is what I call the photographs that almost made it--the shots that were a beat away from being on the cover of Rolling Stone or Vanity Fair; the ones that almost landed in the fashion campaign or the album liner notes. These images are the unseen personal snapshots I've taken of my heroes. This past year of quiet reflection amid great strife has provided the right circumstances to revisit my archive of contact sheets with the context that the passage of time provides. The images that made the cut back then were selected by councils of editors, producers, and all sorts of collaborators at a specific moment in time--soon-to-be icons and legends at the height of fame documented during the golden age of magazine-making. The images that have made the cut for B-Sides represent a more solitary editing process for me, one full of analysis and memory. Few people know this but, long before I was a photographer, I was the guy that made the photographer's prints. The darkroom has long been my chapel, but printing B-Sides has taught me there's an infinite number of ways to interact with past work. This is a time machine to different moments in my career. I love that I can go back and see the magic of who the subjects of my portraits were at that time--not just as they were immortalized on a cover but how they lived across every frame. Comprised of a series of interviews, this film tells complex human stories of people who have not been seen enough. It tells the stories of their hopes, their dreams and their struggles to become who they are. Together, they embody the history of the Ellis Island for gender identity and capture the legendary spirit of Christopher Street.“These portraits were taken in my backyard, in the heart of Greenwich Village, where the LGBT movement began.
