How did Suleiman The Magnificent create a World Superpower?
In a time defined by the rise and fall of empires, where the clash of civilizations echoed through the ages, there emerged a singular figure. In the heart of this vibrant era stood a man, both visionary and warrior, whose name would become synonymous with magnificence – Suleiman the Magnificent.
Suleiman, born in 1494, followed the customary path of succession within the Ottoman Empire. Educated in various disciplines, including poetry, philosophy, and the military arts, he honed his skills under the guidance of tutors. Before stepping into the role of Sultan in 1520, Suleiman had already proven himself as a commanding military leader during his father Selim I's reign.

At the end of the 13th century, Kublai Khan had hopes of bringing more territories under the ascendancy of his empire, with Java being one of those aims. Thus, an envoy by the name of Meng-qi was sent to speak with the King of Singhasari in Java to negotiate the kingdom submitting itself to Mongolian authority and protection for the price of a tribute. This suggestion was tremendously ill-received by the king, Kertanagara, who lashed out at the messenger.

In 1959, the United States of America gained its 50th member. Hawaii, which had been a territory of the U.S. since 1898, earned its place as the final star on the Stars and Stripes; becoming the beloved vacation spot and island paradise we now know today. Hawaii’s image is associated with a beauty of culture and experiences, ranging from luaus to hula dancing to volcanoes and Pearl Harbor - but much of the territory’s original history and culture is now unknown to the American masses. And that has a lot to do with how the U.S. acquired Hawaii…

When it was first decided that the British would leave, negotiations began between the British and Indian representatives, particularly the representative of the Indian National Congress Party, Jawaharlal Nehru, and the voice of India’s Muslim League, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The latter was concerned that an independent, united Indian subcontinent would create an unfair political environment for the Muslim minority in the Hindu-dominated region.

Just as with some of his successors, Nero was adored by the Roman people in his early reign. Only 16 years old, Nero had little affection for the office of emperor, and in fact, saw himself as more of a poet and performer than a ruler of such a place as great as Rome. Nero will succeed Claudius

Some point to the beginning of the end of the Second Bulgarian Empire as being the reign of the child-king Kaliman I.
Being only a child himself, his regent or regents were tasked with running the empire for him until he could come of age. The regency was arguably weak, choosing to pay tribute to the belligerent Mongols as opposed to fighting them off and risking an ongoing war. This, coupled with building internal strife as Bulgarian nobility saw growing cracks and schisms caused the foundation of the empire to begin to crumble.

How was Egypt conquered by the Ottomans in just 1 Year?
From 1485 until 1491, the Ottomans and Mamluks had been at war across the Anatolian and Syrian regions of the Mamluk territory. The conflict ultimately resulted in an unstable peace treaty and no clear victor, thus foreshadowing the sequel that would soon come.
Both the Ottoman Empire and the Mamluk Sultanate were determined to seize overarching control of the Middle Eastern region - a rivalry that had become far more serious after the Ottoman conquest of the Byzantine capital of Constantinople. The Ottomans were on the rise while the Mamluks were no longer at their peak, something that their adversaries fatally noticed…

At the start of Caligula’s reign at the helm of the Roman Empire, he was described as being beloved by “all in the world, from the rising to the setting son”. The Roman people were so overtly enthusiastic about the death of Tiberius, that they would have likely adored any successor who seemed at the very least to be an ok human being. Caligula particularly also had the advantage of being a son of the treasured Germanicus, and in the early months of his rule, he was fairly mild and cheerful. He portrayed himself as generous, playful, and a lavish spender in a way that also seemed to benefit the public.

The story of China’s communists’ rise to power starts in the early years of the 20th century. In 1912, the state of imperial China as everyone knew it came to an end with the overthrow of the last Qing monarch. The next 4 years saw a would-be emperor, Yuan Shikai, take over for a short reign, but his death would quickly solidify the new era in Chinese history that was to come.

Prior to WW2, Iran was already a reluctant participant in global affairs due to the imperial ambitions of both Britain and Russia. The two empires opted to split then-Persia’s lands into a northern and southern sphere of influence claimed by Russia and Britain respectively. The outbreak of the WW1 saw some of Persia’s lands already under occupation, but the nation opted to declare neutrality nonetheless. As a bid to maintain this neutrality, Persia requested that Russia withdraw its occupation forces contemporarily in Azerbaijan in hopes of deterring any further invasion by the likes of nearby nations such as the Ottoman Empire. The plan failed to come to fruition, however, as the Russians declined the Persian appeal and held their ground. This led to increased tensions between the Russian and Ottoman Empires and only further pushed the Persians into a corner as they now had 3 empires closing in on their borders - all fighting wars against one another with Persia standing as the indisposed battleground.

On November 16, 42 BC young Tiberius was born to Livia Drusilla and Tiberius Claudius Nero. The elder Tiberius was an ally to the deceased Julius Caesar and thus to Mark Antony in the civil wars after the dictator’s assassination. As a consequence of his parents’ loyalties, the first years of the infant Tiberius’s life were spent on the run. By the child’s fourth birthday, however, the family was able to return to Rome having been granted amnesty...

While the Allies suffered around 10,000 casualties as a result of the beach stormings at Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, the Germans lost an entire country. France was freed from the withering German grasp as the Third Reich froze like a deer in the headlights on an old country road - but the headlights came from more than one vehicle. There was more than one reason why Germany failed - and really, everything just went as wrong as wrong could be.

Slowly, the Europeans had claimed merely around 10% of African lands. That is, before the Scramble for Africa…

From its center point in Judea, Christianity began its early spread through the surrounding countries of the Levant - what we know now as Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Cyprus. This led to the rollout into the Asian continent of Christianity as Antioch became a new home base for the faith after its evangelization allegedly by Peter the Apostle himself as well as Paul and Barnabas. Apostles Thaddaeus and Bartholomew and Simon and Andrew further evangelized Armenia and Georgia respectively as the span of the budding religion stretched further to the Eastern world; passing additionally through Mesopotamia and Parthia, and allegedly India as well on its way to the Far East.

Simon Bolivar was born in the capital city of the Captaincy General of Venezuela, Caracas, on July 24, 1783. From birth, Simon was already “a somebody”. The Bolivars were one of the most affluent Creole families in all of the Spanish Americas and thus, Simon had a good start to life from a societal perspective. Though his family circumstances were not ideal, marked by the death of his father and separation from his siblings during his upbringing, overall his childhood has been described by historian John Lynch as “at once privileged and deprived”. The boy was reasonably educated, though always a bit of a trouble maker, and at a young age, he had already stumbled upon an idea that the Spaniards were passionately opposed to - Venezuelan independence.

The first known European to reach the gorgeous coasts of California was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. Cabrillo’s expedition had been launched from modern-day Mexico, known then as the Viceroyalty of New Spain, and ended up in San Diego Bay. The expedition was rather fruitless, however, as Cabrillo failed to discover anything that he viewed as worth the trouble for Spain to colonize. He left, and California remained untouched by European hands. Occasional ships, such as those from the Spanish East Indies traders would at times touch down on California’s coasts, but the idea of colonizing the territory still remained unconsidered. Even when English explorer Francis Drake plundered his way into Oregon and California, claiming the lands for his homeland, no real settlement of any sort was actually set up.

It’s believed that this was the time when groups of Germanic peoples, referred to more exclusively from the 8th century on as Angles and Saxons, decided to enter the vacant landscape. There was still an indigenous population across England, namely the Britons with the neighboring Picts and Scots from Scotland and Ireland, but the withdrawal of the Romans left a prominent hole waiting to be filled. The story of exactly how this played out, however, is a bit fuzzy…

It ranks as one of the top 10 smallest countries to carve itself out on our maps yet has one of the world's top 3 GDPs per capita. Doubly landlocked between Austria and Switzerland, the nation of Liechtenstein has no airport nor army, and its entire plot of land lies within the Alpine Region. So, how did this compact and peaceful principality even become a country of its own?...

The history of Mexico, similar to its upper neighbor of the United States, includes a significant period of colonization followed by a war for independence. After the Spaniards toppled the Aztec Empire in the 16th century, their influence spread throughout the region until the Napoleonic occupation of Spain complicated matters in the 1800s. A rebellion was inevitable as the Mexican people grew tired of their overbearing colonizers and finally reached their limit.

Back in the 17th century, a Russian explorer by the name of Semyon Dezhnev attempted to discover whether Siberia was connected with or in close proximity to North America. There are conflicting theories of what happened during this expedition, but the Russian government heard nothing of his findings either way. Still hoping to answer the question Dezhnev set out to resolve though, in the early 18th century, Tsar Peter the Great opted to send out another expedition. This time, two men by the names of Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikov, each set sail for a joint exploration to find the northwestern coast of the North American continent.

Despite the long-forgotten nature and complexity of the matter, let’s try to understand what exactly caused the great powers of Denmark and Prussia to end up in back-to-back wars against one another…
First, we need to try to understand the root of it all - the Schleswig-Holstein Question. This was a diplomatic dispute between the powers of the Kingdom of Denmark and the contemporary German Confederation, relating to the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein.

Before the fall of the Western Roman Empire, trade between the East, especially China, and Rome, had already begun and gone quite well. Thanks to the Silk Road, the two far-away nations were able to import and export different spices, incense, livestock, grains, leather, and other materials - with possibly the most popular import into Rome from China being silk. And Silk was unquestionably in high demand within the Roman Empire, despite the frustrating trade imbalance that some of the later emperors attempted to resolve. So when the Byzantines succeeded the Western wing of the empire, they also inherited this trade relationship and silk obsession.

For hundreds of years, merchants with valuable goods traveled across the largest hot desert of the planet. Surrounded by a harsh environment they managed to buy and sell… and create what we today know as the Trans-Saharan Trade Route…
Trade can be credited with much of the world’s growth over century upon century. Goods, food, language, religion, cultures, and so forth have been spread across the globe by merchants and the routes they cross. Routes across Asia, Europe, and even overseas have made it all possible - but one in particular often fails to receive the proper credit that it’s due. The Trans-Saharan Trade Route was crucial…
Properly described as a network of paths and not one specific trail, the Trans-Saharan Trade Route was a web of roads connecting Northern Africa to its Sub-Saharan neighbors.
