But it is fast becoming clear that the health of our social fabric matters profoundly, and its deterioration is having a serious impact upon our resilience as people. This link between the health of our social fabric and our mental health is clear and should not be underestimated.
In the most recent of our ARC Conversations, we had the privilege of discussing these issues with Erica Komisar, a clinical social worker, psychoanalyst and parent coach.
The simple truth that Erica would seek to remind us of is, that when it comes to our children,
“beginnings matter.”

---Maximising Human Flourishing: Rethinking Energy Policy | Bjorn LomborgAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-10-08 | The modern world exists because of the provision of abundant and affordable energy.
Our energy inheritance is the journey of innovation from open wood fires to the steam engine to the nuclear power plant that has built the societies we inhabit today.
Our ancestors were visionaries who built technologies that would transform the world and lifted billions out of poverty whilst providing dignified & meaningful employment for communities across the world. Modern economies and cities are only possible because of this journey.
This is the heart of our latest ARC Conversation. Our host Gerard Holland sat down with Dr Bjorn Lomborg to talk about the narratives that are holding us back from living lives of abundance, the true cost of our climate policies, and the best ways of building a better world.

---Rediscovering Beauty In A Post Modern World | Winston Marshall, Jonathan Pageau, Makoto FujimuraAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-09-06 | Our history has been marked by creative expressions that seem to point us toward something higher. Inherent in each of us there seems to be an attraction to expressions of what we might have traditionally called 'beauty'.
But we live in an age of deconstruction. The realm of artistic expression, often a vanguard for ideological change, has not been immune to the emptying influence of post-modernism. This leads to the question - what insight does our civilisation's rich artistic and cultural tradition still hold today?
Winston Marshall, Makoto Fujimura, Jonathan Pageau and Timothy Patitsas are among those seeking to mine the best from that tradition. Joining together for our latest offstage podcast, they ask the question:
“is beauty real?”
Drawing on each of their unique experiences and heritage, the group delve further into the nuance of the question, touching on the theological perspectives behind the question of reality, what it means to ‘create’, the idea of transgressive beauty, and more.

---Economic Self-Harm: Top Investors Sobering Warning | ARC ForumAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-08-23 | “Free market capitalism is the greatest instrument of poverty relief that the world has ever seen.”
However, today we see mutations of the 'free market' that are produced by what he Paul Marshall calls “elite failure”.
This manifests in the $2 billion per year that is spent by corporations lobbying in Washington, DC, and the politics and ideology that are weaponised and imposed upon the markets in the absence of strong moral governance.
It is clear that for the ‘fragile plant’ that is our free markets to flourish, it needs to be planted in the soil of "shared values, trust and integrity."
Paul Marshall’s message is this: we must renew our shared understanding of virtue and together commit to stewarding free and competitive markets.

---“Good People Must Not Be Silenced!”: Jordan Peterson’s Call to Leaders at ARC ForumAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-08-17 | Dr Jordan Peterson: "What does it mean for a country to descend into the grip of the totalitarian nightmare? ...it means that every single person who is an inhabitant of that country has decided to hold their tongue when they've been called upon to say what should be said."
Speaking at ARC Forum, Jordan Peterson’s warning is that these catastrophes don’t just occur overnight, but that there is a journey towards them that is marked by silence.
“Good people have a burden on their conscience. The burden requires them to speak…And they refuse the call.”
We are at a turning point in our societies. The health of a society relies upon the responsibility and courage of its people. Jordan’s call is emphatic: “Speak the truth while you still can.”

---The Networks That Changed Nations | David StroudAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-08-02 | “Is it possible to reverse a declining culture?”
History would say 'yes': the Renaissance, the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution. Five times Europe has re-invented itself.
The question remains then, how does a cultural rebirth happen?
David Stroud’s conviction is that it happens through networks.
The ideas of the Renaissance were sparked when Petrarch, the poet, fused the clarity and creativity of classical texts with his deep conviction about the Christian faith. But the ideas became a force for cultural renewal when Petrarch “travelled incessantly, building a network…[of] emperors and popes, educators, priests and wealthy patrons.”
As David says: “ideas have consequences when they're linked to dense networks of senior leaders, who will imagine how those ideas can create a better future, who will refine those ideas… and then embed them in the institutions of which they're responsible in order to change the world.”

---How Creativity Makes a Story Attractive | Johannes Hartl and James OrrAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-07-24 | “Truth, beauty and goodness radiate.”
Johannes Hartl's conviction is that these three things have a force in themselves to convince, and that a posture of humility and authenticity is the key to that force reaching those around us.
“We need to humbly suggest one narrative. And if this is beautiful, if this is coming from the heart, and people feel if it's coming from the heart, then it will be attractive.”
The question of beauty is at the forefront of Johannes’ thinking when it comes to uniting people around a story. He says,
“We have to learn to speak the language of beauty and of excellence in this cultural moment.”
Johannes’ call is for us to “create fresh, modern cultural expressions” that embody our better story.

---ARC CEO: We Must Re-Lay The Foundations Of The WestAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-07-19 | “There was once a day in the West when we took seriously the extraordinary value and dignity of every human being.”
We live in the aftermath of a deconstruction revolution. What we once held to be self-evident has been forgotten. The legacy of the ‘long march through the institutions’ is all around us, manifested in a generation who have torn down the very frameworks that nurtured the prosperity they have inherited, and whose sense of identity is increasingly arbitrary and at the mercy of ‘progress’.
Baroness Philippa Stroud’s message to us is simple: take up the discarded legacy of our civilisational heritage and carry it forward into a brighter future.
Her call goes out to rally those who will “lead with courage and strength, and who will create and not complain, build and not tear down, who are relational and not extractive, and who understand that this is for the long term and not the short term.”
It is these people who will write our ‘better story’.

---Abundant Energy Makes The World Better | Bjorn LomborgAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-07-17 | Human ingenuity is the best climate policy.
Bjorn Lomborg seeks to bring a balanced and thoughtful view to the climate conversation, where alarmist narratives have created policies that do more harm than good.
As Bjorn says, “yes there are problems ahead, but we make more solutions than problems.” The results of one-sided storytelling are unrealistic ‘net-zero’ climate policies which drive up energy prices and carry costs that vastly outweigh their benefits.
We are simply, in Bjorn’s words, “making the lifeblood of civilisation more expensive.”
Bjorn’s call is for us to shift our focus away from making policies to appease the doomsday heralds and to instead fix our attention on energy innovation – the historic key that opened the door to our industrial revolution and brought us the prosperity we experience today.

---The Keys To Raising Resilient Children | Erica KomisarAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-07-15 | "We have over the past 75 years prioritized adult’s desires rather than focusing on the needs of children. Society wants an external fix for the mental health epidemic in children ….but the truth is that we are responsible for this crisis, and only we can undo it."
Erica Komisar's challenge to parents is clear: "They need to take responsibility for their children’s mental health challenges rather than blaming outside forces."
As mental health problems in our children and young people grow at an alarming rate, and our health services are pushed beyond their limit, Erica calls us to look beyond a "quick fix answer" and address the issue at it's root.
Children need their parents.
In Erica's words: "children are our future" - and we will not resign them to a future of fragility, but one of strength.

---Jordan Peterson: Embrace Sacrifice - Find MeaningAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-07-14 | “Voluntary sacrifice in the service of what’s highest: this is the highest principle.”
Jordan Peterson opened our gathering with a simple idea: Western civilisation is built on the idea of sacrifice.
In Jordan's words: "[Sacrifice] is being willing to give up something in the hopes of attaining something of greater value: something that’s deferred, mature, rich and harmonious with the lives around you... It is integrating our personal desires with those of our family, our city, our nation... It is the higher principle that puts hedonistic self-gratification in its right place."
Stepping up into responsibility always takes sacrifice. And the life of responsible citizenship creates a virtuous cycle - an "infinite upward spiral" - that carries us higher into prosperity, truth and meaning.
Sacrifice means together we all experience something greater. This is the adventure we’re called to.
This is the better story.

---In Defence Of Western Values | ARC Off-StageAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-07-05 | "I found myself in the West where I suddenly was exposed to so much opportunity and possibility, and a sense of freedom that people back home will never even be able to understand."
---
Freedom is a Western reality, which in Konstantin Kisin's words, Western values produce.
For Africa Brooke, even at 9 years old, the difference felt entering a society built upon belief in the sanctity of the individual was tangible. This is the Western reality to which we have become accustomed.
However, trying to live in the Western reality without its foundational values will ultimately cause the reality to fade, until it is something else entirely. Konstantin reminds us, the price of freedom has always been eternal vigilance, and the same is true of the prosperity, safety, and strength enjoyed in the West for so long.
In ARC's latest Off Stage conversation, Africa Brooke, Konstantin Kisin, Winston Marshall, and Eva Vlaardingerbroek discuss the question, what are Western values? What makes the West unique, and how should this be protected?

Learn more at arcforum.comThe 4 Key Threats Facing The West | Niall Ferguson, Konstantin Kisin & Francis FosterAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-05-31 | 1. The ‘Axis of Upheaval’ - China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. These four nations, Niall Ferguson says, are working with increasing cooperation and coordination, threatening democracies the world over. “Ukraine is one, Israel's another, Taiwan is probably next.”
2. The one-sided arms race - The USA used to be the ‘arsenal of democracy’, Niall says, but now it has fallen well behind China. “China is now the ‘arsenal of autocracy’” and, in the event of a hot war with China, “the US would run out of precision missiles in about five days, more or less.”
3. China’s economic power - “China has much greater resources technologically than any previous rival that the United States and its allies faced. The Soviet Union never had more than about 42% of the USA’s GDP.” China’s is “certainly in the 80% range and is above 100% if you do a purchasing power parity calculation.”
4. The USA’s worryingly low economic resilience - US debt servicing costs are about to overtake defence spending. “With interest rates rising and the deficits in excess of 5% of GDP as far as the eye can see…the US isn't actually able to cope with three military crises at once.”
In this week’s ARC Off-Stage Conversation, historian Niall Ferguson meets Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster of TRIGGERnometry to discuss the future of Western civilisation. Konstantin and Niall discuss some of the major threats we are facing, but Niall reminds us that these are no worse than those faces 50 years ago. The 70s saw huge inflation problems, deteriorating geopolitics in many regions, and concern about morality. But by 1980, “Ronald Reagan is elected. Nine years later, the Berlin Wall comes down, and two years after that, the Soviet Union's gone.”
Yes, the West currently faces serious problems and threats, but decline is never inevitable. We must remember our history because, despite “the declinists’” obsession with crisis and collapse, there is always hope for renewal.
We hope you enjoy this fascinating discussion between 3 world-leading commentators.

In a world where gender equality and career choices remain hotly debated, do biological differences between men and women inherently dictate professional success, or are our new societal norms the true barrier to achieving workplace parity?
In this episode of ARC Off-Stage, Claire Lehmann and Louise Perry tackle the contentious topic of gender differences in the workforce. They challenge the "blank slate" view of human nature, exploring the complexities of gender, biology, and professional outcomes. From the historical context of the sexual revolution to the persistent gender pay gap, these insightful women highlight the nuanced realities of men and women's experiences in various sectors.
Claire and Louise discuss whether biological predispositions influence career choices and performance, examining the impact of motherhood and the work-family life clash. They also scrutinise policies like those in Hungary that incentivise childbirth and consider their potential to reshape gender dynamics. Join us for this thought-provoking exploration of gender roles, professional equity, and the future of workplace diversity.

---Reclaiming Freedom Of Speech At Universities | James Orr, Dennis Prager, John Anderson, Os GuinnessAlliance for Responsible Citizenship2024-05-02 | “We saw the spiral of silence…where you have got a dedicated vocal minority that's got its teeth into a contentious issue and is imposing a significant social cost to dissent.”
When Dr James Orr first invited Dr Jordan Peterson to speak at Cambridge, he could not have predicted the backlash. Student activists campaigned on the streets and wrote libellous joint letters. This was an example of one of Britain’s oldest institutions exhibiting cancel culture at its worst.
In our latest ARC Off-Stage Conversation, James Orr shares how a group of academics faced down a vocal minority to defend freedom of speech.
Activists had lobbied the university to restrict thought and inquiry in the name of safety. The university authorities had agreed to make reforms that would have paralysed free inquiry for many scholars overnight, and there was a real social cost for those who disagreed.
This conversation is the first part of a wide-ranging discussion between James Orr, along with John Anderson, Os Guinness, and Dennis Prager. They talk about what it will take to stand up for the truth and free speech, and how we can seek to build and renew institutions.

Young people are choosing not to have children. They even feel this is a moral responsibility. This has become common across the developed world, and yet we fail to fully understand that demography is destiny. Our economic and social futures will be directly shaped by the health of our families and the decisions that young people make about having children.
In our latest ARC off-stage conversation Philip Pilkington, Paul Morland, Eric Kaufman and Miriam Cates break these themes down.
They explore Pilkington and Morland’s ground-breaking research which shows that countries which fail to reverse demographic collapse are left with the bleak choice of economic stagnation or unsustainable mass migration.
“In Western politics”, Miriam says, “demography is the elephant in the room… The Right want lower taxes, the Left want more spending, but the truth is that we can’t have lower taxes or more spending if we don’t have a workforce! … This has nothing to do with politics or ideology, these are just the facts.”
“The only path to a thriving society”, Pilkington and Morland write in their paper, “lies in being prepared to have significantly more children than people in the United Kingdom, and much of the rest of the world, have had for decades.”

I was a seven-year-old in the Chinese Revolution… We both saw incredible violence. We both understood totalitarianism and the danger of Marxism.”
The moment that author and social critic Os Guinness describes his conversation with one of the greats of Western philosophy, Isaiah Berlin, he provides a window into a world that it is too easy to forget.
Many of the most eloquent defenders of Western civilisation are those who lived under Marxist tyranny. In the words of Dr Guinness: “I would never be naïve: Their revolutions never succeed. Their oppressions never end. Their promises never are fulfilled.”
---
In the first of our ARC off-stage conversations, Os Guinness and Winston Marshall explore the story of the development of Marxism and Cultural Marxism, and the different stories about freedom that we have.
Is freedom found in the absence of constraint? Is it found in the absence of economic and social inequality? Or is there a deeper story to tell?
These are the questions which animate the discussion. We hope you enjoy the conversation.

It lacks the inspiration, the dynamism that made it the civilisation it has been.”
In the second of our ARC vision series, author and social critic Os Guinness observes that every great civilisation has a dynamism and a source of inspiration. But that there comes a point where a civilisation loses touch with what made it great. At that moment, there are three broad options: you renew the inspiration, you replace the inspiration, or you decline.
From the Parthenon in Athens to the Colosseum in Rome, you see that great civilisations have seen decline.
We are at a watershed moment like this in the West. We have rejected the faith story and ideological foundations which provided for dynamism and inspiration. The attempt to replace it with Enlightenment secularism and reason has proven inadequate. And today we watch as critical theorists unpick the institutions that bind us together.
Can we return to confidence in our identities and renew a belief in human dignity, truth, conscience, and freedom? Os argues we can relay the roots of our civilisation.

We hope you enjoy this fascinating ARC vision film from Os Guinness, who masterfully exposes the heart of the challenge we face.

“We take energy for granted in our daily lifestyles. This comes as no surprise to Western societies—energy is vital to economic prosperity and human development.
Yet the West has created an African Climate Paradox: claiming it wants to “shield” African nations from the dangers of climate change, whilst restricting the access of African nations to their own resources, which are vital to lifting their populations out of poverty.
Rather than dictating African policy and sacrificing African prosperity, the West needs to respect African sovereignty and prioritise the flourishing of African people. The most crucial keys to Africa making the most of its energy resources are developing strong governance structures and space for entrepreneurship. Stability will enable Africa to harness its incredible energy potential and develop solutions for whole societies.”

In the real world, we have to make real trade-offs between climate security, energy poverty, and energy security. Energy is necessary for lifting much of the world out of poverty, however, climate concerns are also real considerations. We need to start a constructive, and honest conversation about these trade-offs.
Dr Scott Tinker is the director of the Bureau of Economic Geology, the State Geologist of Texas, professor at The University of Texas at Austin, Chairman of the Switch Energy Alliance, and CEO of Tinker Energy Associates.

What I desperately want is to pull things together, to invite everyone in, to share things in a collective celebration."
Beauty is where love and truth meet. Artists make that manifest.
At this conference, we were promoting responsible citizenship. While that, of course, cuts through the political, economic, and social spheres, we also profoundly recognise that the heart and soul of culture is its Art. And so we wanted to share with you Samuel Andreyev's perspective on the role of art and music in culture. Samuel Andreyev is a composer, music educator, podcaster, and public speaker. His works have been performed, recorded, and broadcast worldwide. He was born in Canada and lives in France. His most recent disc, In Glow of Like Seclusion, has just been released by Divine Art (UK). In this talk, he encourages artists to put their work out there into the world, be courageous, and see if it survives. He believes that the purpose of creativity is to engender a dialogue between past, present, and future that nourishes and irrigates our culture, keeping it supple, vital, and mobile. Artists have access to resources that the artists of the past could never have dreamed of, and he believes that the responsibility of artists today lies in marshalling these extraordinary resources in the service of courageous and bold creative exploration.

They address the question of whether good stewardship is compatible with abundance and human flourishing. Marian argues that the world is infinitely abundant, as evidenced by the fact that resources have become 98% cheaper since 1850, and that technology and innovation will continue to make resources more abundant. Alex challenges the assumption that the Earth is fragile and argues that humans are producer-improvers who add massive value to the Earth. He suggests that our environmental goal should be to advance human flourishing on Earth, not eliminate human impact.

We encourage you, to please make time to watch this talk from beginning to end. Turn your phone off, go full screen, and let the words speak to your heart.
It has been a week of big ideas, strategic relations, and deep conversations. However, Jordan reminded us that “we have so many people in the world that are lost in ways that are nearly unimaginable” and urged all those in the room to lay aside all of our “hedonic whims”, to take up, cling to, and insist upon the divine responsibility given to us to work for the betterment of our societies. “There is no desert we can’t make bloom”.
The inaugural ARC Conference has been a special time. While those in the room were a community of senior thought-leaders from around the world, we want to allow all of you to engage fully in the ideas and speakers of the conference. We will ensure that all the talks and content are available to you, for free, here on YouTube.

At the ARC Conference, We were delighted to be able to display the artwork of renowned contemporary artist Makoto Fujimura. Makoto is an expert in the art of ‘Kintsugi’ – the ancient art of renewing broken ceramics by repairing them with gold. Either side of the ARC Conference main stage, two of Makoto’s artworks were displayed: Water Flames and Charis. These stunning works were chosen because they depict the journey from darkness to light, from decline to renewal, from lament to glory. They also tell the story that noble and beautiful things in this world (Charis), are forged in the furnace of trial and perseverance (Water Flames).
