Historic Aerials of our Property Jay Bates 2024-09-15 | I've been stuck in our camper most of this week due to the hurricane passing through Mississippi. We're five hours north of the Gulf of Mexico, so we rarely get anything major from hurricanes that impact the coast. On Thursday, we received 4-5" of rain with winds around 20-25mph. It was nothing major, and we're all safe.I'm going to the property the day this is published to record in the rain and document water flow around various areas of the property. We've owned the property for 5 months and have not spent a night there. Usually, rain is the signal for us to leave before we get stuck, so I have very little first-hand knowledge of water flow as it happens. Recording water drainage will give me a better idea as to what needs to be done as we develop further. In this video I'm taking a step back in time to learn a bit more about the property we own. Was it always a forest? Was it used a farm? Was it used for cattle grazing? I won't be able to find all of the answers but I'm definitely learning daily. Yard Glider, Moving Stumps, Box Blade and Ditch Cleaning - Day 142 Jay Bates 2024-09-08 | It's been another chaotic week of bouncing around between a lot of small tasks. The 2-acre clearing is starting to look a lot better. We got a Yard Glider to help out with moving stuff around. I was mainly interested in it to take a lot of wear and tear off of the tractor when rolling the root balls around, but we found it to be way more useful than I originally thought. It's like a super mobile and flexible trailer. We have been and will be using this Yard Glider a lot. Yard Glider provided the glider in exchange for organically using it in the videos. I make nothing on their sales. If you'd like to find out more, go to yardglider.com With the borrowed box blade (Thanks, Ken!), I was able to completely scrape the fire aftermath and do a good initial cleaning. There's still a lot of work to be done before this is lawn-ready, but I don't have a timeline rush on getting the clearing perfect. It will happen a little bit at a time. Getting it to this stage was a lot of work. Standing back to take it all in and think about the transformation so far makes me smile. The first half of the driveway has trees overhanging, so you (almost) get the feeling of being in a tree tunnel of sorts. Maybe not a full tunnel, but the trees do an excellent job of pushing your focus forward. Around the halfway point of the driveway, the focal point is straight forward into what was a group of vine-damaged and messy, unorganized trees. It was visually distracting having them right in front of an organized group of pines. I took the trees down and set the maple tree aside for me to cut up for the smoker. By removing them, the focal point of the driveway can now be seen from a further distance. As you drive up to the pines, the line of sight starts to get further, expanding how the space feels. As you go through the driveway, your line of sight increases, and the tight feeling of driving through the forest incrementally expands into a greater sense of open space at the clearing where the shop and house will be. I really like how the driveway is turning out. There's something to observe through the entire length of the driveway. It feels more like a mini-journey through the woods rather than a dull driveway with a beginning and an end. The driveway is crowned to prevent standing water on the driveway. The water hits the ditches and drains toward the culvert. However, it's not perfect. I've noticed a wet spot in the last corner when the water starts to dry in the ditches. So, from there to the culvert needed to be just a touch deeper. Ultimately, I think the culvert needs to be lowered by about 6”, but I don't think I'll tackle that this year. It works enough as it is, but this whole drainage system will need tweaking a few more times before it is finished. Forestry Mulching CHAOS - Day 140 Jay Bates 2024-09-01 | What an AWESOME experience at the property. I hired a forestry mulcher to knock down 1.3 acres of undergrowth and to leave the tall pines standing. I paid a rate of $200/hour with a couple extra hours negotiated to create a marketing video for the company. I requested the primary focus to be on knocking down the small trees and mulching the stumps close to the ground. I can come back later and run anything left over through my tractor woodchipper. I got exactly what I paid for. It looks like a tornado went through there. Some of the smaller trees right next to the larger pines were left to prevent accidentally hitting the pines. The end result is what I was after; A clear line of sight from the clearing to halfway up the driveway. I didn't show the specific before and after comparison shots because I have a little bit more I want to accomplish. I'll cover that in an upcoming video. Super Handy Tractor Bucket - JU Fabworks - Day 134 Jay Bates 2024-09-01 | Today, I made my tractor bucket a bit more handy by installing the JU Fabworks Universal Workmaster with D-rings. It's a bolt-on plate for the top of the tractor bucket that includes a hitch receiver, two D-rings, and two chain hooks. The tractor hydraulics have already proven handy for picking up and moving a trailer. It's much easier and quicker than using my truck. When not in use, the hitch can be installed in the back of the receiver, where it is always ready to use but out of the way. One of the main reasons I've been wanting one of these for a while is the chain hooks. Many times since buying our property in April I have said "Darn, this is a perfect situation to pully XYZ with a chain." Having a pair of chain hooks on the bucket will be a useful option forever. I've already used them a handful of times, safely pulling large vines out of trees. After identifying a need for my tractor I searched for solutions and found the JU Fabworks lineup. Speed Cutting Trail Overgrowth – LaneShark LS3 – Day 135 Jay Bates 2024-08-25 | With the tractor up and running, I wanted to get back to some trail work. Today, I used the LaneShark LS3 to clean up one of our main access trails on the property. Cutting overreaching limbs with the tractor is so much faster and easier than walking with a pole saw. 2 Excavators, a Trencher, a Dozer - Electrical and Shop Pad Done - Day 125 Jay Bates 2024-08-18 | Wow, what a week. Monday started off with text messages from my dozer guy saying he was getting started and the electric company was already rolling along. The majority of the pad work was done on day 1 and it was finished up on day 2. It still needs to be finessed. I have a concrete guy lined up to come take a look and bid on the concrete pad for the shop. The electric run was completed on Thursday. Extra conduit was run for fiber internet as well. The tractor repair was quick. When I dropped it off for a warranty repair I was told 2-3 weeks. They got it done one day shy of a week and I picked it up on the one week mark. I'm very pleased with the folks at Oktibbeha County Co-Op for getting this done quickly. Broke Tractor, Electric APPROVED, Septic, Ranting - Day 120 Jay Bates 2024-08-11 | A friend let me borrow his box blade to use on the property. The Cat 1 pins were in rough shape, bent and broken. When you borrow something, it's best to return it in better condition. The $20 I spent on new pins is well worth the time and wear and tear I put on the box blade. The tractor has to go in for warranty repair due to a strangely implemented hydraulic fitting supplying the power steering that is strangely not serviceable. I contacted the manufacturer to get a part number for the fitting and was told a part number for that fitting doesn't exist. Replacing the entire power steering hydraulic cylinder assembly is the solution. I'll keep you updated..Electric changes were approved and are paid for. I'm waiting for when they will start. I hope to get a notification so I can run out there and record. The water meter has been paid for and I'm just waiting for them to get started as well. I hope to record some of it. Afterward, I'll trench 1300' of 2" pipe to the clearing. Ultimately, I want a well drilled, but financially, it's not in the cards at the moment. I'd like to use the city-supplied water to drill a few shallow wells on the property and have that tested to determine how we can use it. I met with the septic installer and was told I needed to jump through more hoops to get the Mississippi Department of Health involved by having them do a perc test so they can tell me what the professional septic installers have already told me. Broken Tractor, Shop Location, Utilities, Murphys law! - Day 116 Jay Bates 2024-08-04 | We've had a Murphy's Law kind of week. It's simple stuff, but it has been frustrating. These are the weeks when I'm glad I'm documenting everything. In a few years, it will be great to look back on this week and remember the details. I got the left curl cylinder fixed on the tractor. That was $75 for straightening out the ram and installing a new seal inside, plus four thirty-minute drives in my truck. The tractor was down for 2 full work days for the cylinder repair. The following day, the power steering started to leak hydraulic fluid. After realizing it was an o ring behind a jam nut, I tried to remove the fitting, only to find out that there was an interference with the cylinder ram. It looked like the fitting was bent, so I went ahead and forced it out, which chewed up the end where the hose connects. Ugh! I fixed the end the best I could, installed a new o ring, and installed the fitting back into the power steering. It worked! No leak....until shortly later when both connections started spraying fluid. I think the fitting itself must have a crack I cannot detect. On Monday I'll contact the dealer and determine the next step. Hopefully, this is covered under warranty. I had an Ooopsie! moment again. My wife put our backpack leaf blower down near the front right of my truck tire. I didn't notice it, so I backed up, turned right, drove forward, and heard CRUNCH! Oh, man! The truck won that fight. As my 5-year-old daughter said to her mom, "Dad has his license. He should have looked where he was going." The shop pad location has been marked and will hopefully be started next week. I should also be able to get the ball rolling on having the electrical installed and the water meter set sometime this week. I was told each will have about a 2-week lead time. I'm having the electricity run underground by the electric company and the water meter installed by the water company. This was not expected - Dealing with the aftermath - Day 99 Jay Bates 2024-07-28 | The past two weeks have been a blur. We burned the 300' brush pile, and the following day, it rained. It rained HARD. Enough to put out all of our hot embers that we planned on piling on top of for the next few days. Zero chance of rain, my butt!! It wasn't supposed to rain for four days after the fire.I suppose it's a blessing in disguise, though, as we can now salvage most of the larger trees without all the brush in our way. A family friend is taking the logs to the local sawmill, and I'm putting a lot of hours on the tractor moving and pushing and sorting and cutting and moving and moving and moving stuff.This is the first phase of the adventure where I drastically underestimated the time involved. Before the fire, we were about a month behind schedule. I think we're about a month and a week behind schedule now. But then again, how can someone accurately predict a six-month schedule when the weather is so unpredictable? To say that I'm learning a lot along the way is a drastic understatement. I've learned more in the past few months than I have in the past few years. BURN DAY! 300ft Bon Fire - Day 95 Jay Bates 2024-07-21 | What a day! Sun up to sun down, it was a busy day. And man, did I sleep well that night! Those are the good days. The days that end with you being in the shower and looking down at all the dirt run off of your body. Evidence of hard work washing away.We cleared 2 acres on our forever property and, unfortunately, we need to burn most of it. We are rushing this process a bit so because we are already a month behind schedule on the new shop built. If we want to move in before winter, we must push forward. The burn pile is 300' long and contains mostly smaller trees and brush from our pine stand. We didn't have the time or weather cooperation to salvage all of the larger trees, so some of them had to go into the pile. Not all is lost, though; I'll talk more about this in the next video. Every location has a different set of rules and regulations (freedom restrictions). In our area, it is recommended that you call the sheriff's office before a controlled burn like this. That way, if people call because they see a fire in the woods, the sheriff's office can let them know that it is a controlled burn. Regarding fire containment, the 300' pile is in the middle of a 200' x 400' clearing with no vegetation on the ground surrounding the pile. That provides a fire break to mitigate spread. Our only concern was hot embers floating away from the pile and starting another fire elsewhere. For that reason, we waited until an hour before dark to start the fire. This lets the dew start to set in and allows us to better see the hot embers as they fly away. Luckily, no other fires were started. In the event that another fire was started, we had multiple people watching the woods, 250 gallons of water, and a leaf blower. A leaf blower can be a great tool to stop the spread of a small fire if used correctly. GAME CHANGER for my trails - LaneShark LS3 - Day 86 Jay Bates 2024-07-16 | We currently have over 2 miles of trails, and when I complete my mapped-out trail system, we will have over 3 miles of trails. We are an outdoors family, and these trails provide recreation, relaxation, and transportation to access our entire property. With a lot of trails comes a lot of trail maintenance. The ground work is relatively easy; pull a cutter or blade. We want the above-ground work to be just as easy. To knock down the overgrowth from the sides and above, a pole saw was the tool of choice. While it's not incredibly difficult, doing it all day on miles of trails is not the exercise I look forward to. Insert the LaneShark LS3. This is a hydraulic-powered articulating rotary cutter that attaches to the loader of a tractor. I have a BadBoy 4035H tractor, which calls for the LS3 model from LaneShark. While using it in the centered horizontal position is effective for a more targeted approach to rotary cutting operations, that's not where it shines. The most common use for this implement is to have it offset to the right and in the vertical orientation. Woodland Mills WG24 Stump Grinder - Day 73 Jay Bates 2024-06-22 | We bought 101 acres of woods, so we have and will have many stumps to address. In this video, I'm using the Woodland Mills WG24 Stump Grinder to grind a pair of stumps in the middle of our perimeter trail. The stump grinder has a 24" diameter grinding wheel containing 34 replaceable tungsten carbide teeth. Lower the 3pt to remove an inch or so of material when driving forward. On each pass, go deeper until you are a full 6" below the surface if necessary. If the bite is too much, you can notice the back of the grinder start to lean and/or the audible change of the tracker under too much load. When looking at the back of the grinder you will notice that it rotates in a clockwise direction. When cutting, it's important to do the majority of the cutting in the 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock quadrant, with minimal cutting in the 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock quadrant. Because the cutting teeth are traveling down in the 3-6 quadrant, a lot of the cutting energy will be wasted in the downward compression of the wood fibers rather than slicing them away. Too much downward cutting will cause the grinder to bounce around.For reference, I'm powering it with a Bad Boy 4035h tractor with a SpeeCo quick hitch attached. Perimeter Trail Part 2 - Day 49 Jay Bates 2024-06-09 | We continue the perimeter trail but on the north side this time. The eventual goal is to have a continuous trail along the entire perimeter of the property. This will help with security by keeping an eye on everything, but it will also be for recreation. We hope to have many miles of trails throughout the entire property for hiking, horseback riding, and driving with ATVs. The progress created in this video was accomplished in three days. On Day 49, we started at the end of the northbound trail near the adjacent field and cut west. On Day 50, we started at the same spot and cut east. I took Day 51 off to fix a hydraulic leak on the tractor. On Day 52, I started at the driveway and cut west to tie into the end point from Day 50. Kioti KG4066 Grapple and Bad Boy 4035 Tractor - Day 43 Jay Bates 2024-06-08 | I ordered the W.R. Long RBG3 root rake grapple, and when I went to pick it up, the dealer noticed me looking at the Kioti KG4066 grapple. What caught my eye was the cylinders on the Kioti being in the back instead of on top, like the RBG3. The KG4066 had cylinder shields installed, and the metal was thicker. Both are made of AR400 steel, but the KG4066 steel is thicker. The KG4066 retails for about $600 more, and when I was offered the choice of either grapple for the same price, I chose the Kioti KG4066. I hope I made the right decision. So far I'm impressed with the grapple. The grapple is operated by my Bad Boy 4035h tractor, which I purchased mainly due to the 2,200lb loader capacity. Sawing Logs - Day 40 Jay Bates 2024-06-02 | Yesterday, our dirt work guy had to stop due to rain. He started a large burn pile and knocked over a dozen or so large pines for me to cut up. So today, we're out here early to get as much of this cut as possible before more rain settles in. These pines were purposefully planted 35-ish years ago as an investment. I'm leaning more toward it being someone's personal investment, not a commercial operation. I say that because this pine stand wasn't managed as well as others I have seen. It looks to have had at least one thinning years ago, but the amount of natural regrowth between the pines leads me to believe nobody has managed this stand in the last decade or more. I'm not a forestry expert, so I could be completely wrong.However, it does leave me with a lot of material for personal use. At this point, the goal is to get at least three 10' logs out of each pine tree. I won't chase every little bit of material further up the tree. Unfortunately, we can't sell any of the pine logs. There isn't a market for it right now. Some people are having a hard time giving it away. Mississippi had a bad drought last year that killed a lot of pines. People were forced to sell off what they had before they fell and rotted away. That tanked the market. Currently, our local mill (30 minutes away) is only paying $35 per ton for pine logs. Piranha Bar VS. Small Trees - Day 32 Jay Bates 2024-05-26 | I tried digging with the stock loader bucket on the tractor and didn't get great results. It's possible, but starting is the hardest part with the stock bucket. I also wanted something that would "hold on" to the trees better so I could utilize hydraulics to remove the smaller stuff instead of a chainsaw, pole saw, and stump grinder.My research led me to the Piranha bar. The internet claims it's a "game changer" for a tractor loader bucket, so I bought one. Yup, it's a game-changer for sure. I've used it for around 10 hours now, and I'm really glad I bought it.Digging is really easy with it. Move it the same way you would use a normal shovel with your foot: push it down, wiggle it front to back, push it down again if needed, rotate the forward end up, and lift it. It's the same motion as a normal shovel. With the bar installed, starting a hole is incredibly easy.But the main reason I got it was for smaller trees. I've seen several videos of people using it to clear trees, and I thought it would be a good investment for our property. It was a GREAT investment. I've found that the smaller 1" or so saplings are easy to go low and drive forward, spearing or wedging the base of the trunk between two teeth, and just drive forward.For 2-4" diameter trees, I've found the best method is to start higher and use the bucket to lay the tree flat. This usually pops the roots up in front. Then, back up, level the bucket, spear the roots with the tooth bar, and drive forward. Once you have the bar piercing the roots, the forward movement of the entire tractor is much more effective at uprooting than the bucket's lifting and/or curling motion. KNOWING where our property boundary is Jay Bates 2024-05-18 | We recently purchased 101 acres of land to homestead for our forever/generational property. At our last property in the city limits, we could stand on the road and see the entire property. With this much land, not so much. Seeing is knowing, and in this video, I share one thing we are doing so that we never lose sight of our survey line. When getting the land surveyed, we had some choices. Do you want the survey to mark just the corners? Do you want the survey to mark the corners plus any waypoints between the corners? How many waypoints? Do you want the line of sight marked as well? What distance interval is appropriate for marking? Any vegetation in the way? If so, you probably want a shorter interval. No vegetation and wide open spaces? You may not need any line of sight marked at all. We chose to have all perimeter waypoints marked with survey pins and the line of sight between the waypoints marked every 200' with a flag in the ground and an eye-level ribbon as close to each flag. The result was over 100 flags in the ground.The flags are great, but they are far from long-lasting. Our surveyor suggested we drive a T Post into the ground at each flag location for a longer-lasting boundary. Brilliant! We eventually want to permanently mark the perimeter with a 5-wire barbed wire fence, but understand that our plate is pretty full, and Rome wasn't built in a day. Driving posts at every flag will be a great way to protect our survey investment while getting a head start on the fence. We are also in the process of cutting a perimeter trail around the property so we can not only monitor the boundary, but also because it's a lot of fun to have many trail choices for recreation. Painting the posts with high-visibility orange marking paint will make these posts easy to spot through 20-30' of vegetation. New Tool: CHIPPING a driveway Jay Bates 2024-04-28 | Due to the weather, the dirt work we contracted out for the driveway and shop pad has been delayed. So, we spent some time doing grunt work to shape the driveway and get a better visual of how it will look and where it will be. We got the tractor out to the property for the first time, which was exciting, to say the least. Tractor seat time is therapeutic. To help us clear our piles, I use a Woodland Mills WC68 6" PTO Wood Chipper, powered by the tractor PTO, and can handle material up to 6" in diameter. The chipper is rated for 20-50 PTO horsepower. My tractor has 30 horsepower at the PTO, so I won't be able to maximize the capability of this chipper, but it will allow for growing room if I get a larger tractor in the future. I haven't measured anything, but I believe I chipped a 5-6" diameter pine tree with it with no problems. I think I could chip 6" pine easily, but hardwoods are another story. You can audibly tell the ease of chipping pine vs the power demand of similar-sized hardwood. Considering we have 101 acres of trees, this will be a handy implement for the foreseeable future. Moving Machines Jay Bates 2024-04-06 | Anyone who moves from one house to another understands how much work and stress is involved in moving. Moving from one shop to another shop is a bit challenging as well. I did just that in 2019 and covered the experience in my 30x40 shop series. In this video I'm sharing my high points involved in moving from a shop to a conex, to move into a new shop eventually.Where to store everything?Shipping container/conex was the solution for us. We paid $2375 for a 40' shipping container delivered with a 5-year leak-free warranty. It's not pretty. It's beat up a little bit here and there. And it has some surface rust in spots. But it's structurally sound and guaranteed to not leak. For us, this is ideal. We will have it moved once more to the new property once we get the shop built and the conex unloaded. Our initial plan for this on the new property will be as a starting point for the barn.Purge!Moving space and storage space is a premium....so PURGE! I gave all of my smaller bits and shorter boards to a local woodworker who carves spoons. For someone who makes smaller objects, it was a welcomed gift. I gave all of my longer boards to a local woodworker who could use them for projects. And finally, the last large item to purge was the miter saw station. I sold it to Zach and Jason from Back 40 Customs.Reduce Multiple Trips1) boxes...duh2) 55 gallon barrels. Easy to move with an appliance dolly. I used this strategy in the last shop. The only downside is you can cram so much weight in them that they become hard to move with a regular 2 weel hand dolly.3) large crates for more volume, also stackable.Embrace HydraulicsWhen possible, of course. A pallet jack for heavy lifting in tight spaces proved it's weight in gold during this move. We got the $399 one from Harbor Freight. Thumbs up. A tractor (etc.) for heavy lifting in open space is obviously a good idea. But word on the street is that tractors don't grow on trees. I understand not everyone will have access to this option. But if you have any way to utilize a tractor or a forklift of any kind, DO IT. Save your back.PalletizeIf you embrace hydraulics, group items onto pallets. Heck, get some cheap 55-gallon drums and fill them heavier than you can lift them. But place them on a pallet before filling. Then use a pallet jack to move them around.Random Thoughts:Take a picture of every bin before you put a lid on it. It's easier to scroll through photos to find stuff than it is to open every box, tote, and crate.The most predictable thing is the unpredictability of the weather. We had a slight downpour on one of my cast iron tools. Fortunately, I flooded the surface in WD-40 before the drive, and it had an hour of 60mph wind blowing it off after the rain. No rust!Be safe. Prepare for the unexpected. We made several hour-and-a-half trips to the new location, and before one of those drives, I thought, "Maybe I should put my automotive floor jack in the back of the truck, just in case." Of course, I didn't. On the trip home that same day, our trailer popped off the ball after hitting a huge hole or bump (I never saw it) at a transition from road to bridge on the interstate. The trailer was hooked up properly with the correct size ball. The impact was just too intense for the trailer latch. The trailer drug the concrete sparks flying everywhere, and dust and debris filled the air behind us. We settled to a stop with our hazard lights on and assessed the damage. No damage to the truck. No damage to the safety chains or the wiring connection. But the tongue jack didn't make it. It took all of the damage and bent to an unusable state. A kind gentleman at a lawn care company at the bottom of the highway onramp we were parked next to yelled up saying he was coming with a jack. What a wonderful gesture. He helped me get the trailer back on the ball, and we were on our way. ALWAYS PAY IT FORWARD AND HELP OTHERS WHEN YOU CAN. I sold my favorite machine Jay Bates 2024-03-30 | We sold our house and shop, so it's time to move my Avid CNC machine. If you're not familiar with my machine, it has a horizontal capacity of a smidgen more than 4' in the X direction and 10' in the Y direction. I added a vertical table to the front, which takes up some space, and a rotary in the back, which takes up space. The space in between is roughly the size of a sheet of MDF. The vertical table up front allows for EASY tenon creation, box joints, dovetail joints, and almost anything you can think of for integral joinery. I've got my office setup in the garage of our bumper pull toy hauler, rocking two out of five bars of LTE cell phone mobile hotspot internet. Life is good :)Phase-1 is complete. Phase-1 is as follows:- We have already established utilities on the in-between property. Uncle George offered one of his future hay pastures for us to call home for a few months. It's an old house trailer spot in a VERY MUDDY pasture with a power pole, water meter, and a "hopefully" working septic system. We're not sure if the septic is draining just yet, so we're only dumping gray water at the moment. If the black tank gets full before verifying the septic works, we will have to get a portable tank of some kind and have it pumped occasionally.- We purchased a 40' conex. I call it a shipping container, but due to my wife's military background, she's got me calling it a conex as well. We were unsure if we could fit everything in the conex but thought it was the best plan and that we would just FIO (figure it out!) when the time came. We ended up needing to use the empty shed that is conveniently located next to the camper spot and a little slice of the family tractor shed.- Sell the large equipment that presented the most challenges for storage and setting up again. In upcoming videos, I'll discuss what didn't make the cut and what will be replaced in the next shop. I have a lot of footage from breaking down the shop that I haven't had a chance to edit.- Close on selling the house. I'm typing this article the day before we close and refuse to publish this article and video before the house is legally sold. I've been bitten by Murphy's law too many times that I don't want to say, "I'm going to do x-y-z," and then something crazy stupid happens, and I have to eat my words. Not this time, Murphy. I'm waiting to close this chapter until you look away.And that's it. That's Phase-1. And just like Murphy's law regarding Phase-1, I'm not going into the nitty gritty about Phase-2 until one more milestone date has passed. But here's the zoomed-out overview without the details:Phase-1 - Sell the house and get established on the in-between property.Phase-2 - Purchase the property and get established in the camper in the new shop.Phase-3 - Land development.Phase-4 - Start the house shell, barn, equipment shed, or campsites (probably non-commercial). The order will be determined by urgency.
