Mixing is usually carried out at temperature, so both phases are liquid when the emulsion is formed, but once cooled the wax particles solidify – so technically, they are fine suspensions of wax particles in water rather than emulsions.
So to ensure stability it’s essential to obtain the smallest possible particle size. A Silverson mixer is ideal for this. Find out more by watching the video or visit the Silverson website: silverson.com/.

Processing resins can be challenging and resins can be supplied different forms such as liquid, powder, and solid or “chip” form. Liquid resin is simple to use but very costly. Likewise powdered resins can be easier to dissolve than solid or chip forms but the additional raw material processing costs are passed on to the user. Even at high temperatures conventional agitators cannot effectively dissolve solid resin. An agitator simply moves the resin around the tank, only dissolving the outer layer of the chips. This slowly reduces the chips down but it can take hours to complete solubilisation, dramatically increasing the processing costs.
In this video, see how a Silverson mixer can be used for high speed disintegration and solubilisation of resins into solvents. At Silverson, we call this process 'Cold Cutting' because unlike conventional mixing methods, with a Silverson mixer you can rapidly dissolve the resin at ambient temperature.
See how with the right mixing equipment the solubilisation process can be quick and simple and how a Silverson high shear, high speed mixer can reduce your mixing times from hours to just minutes!

The vigorous mixing action is capable of moving the entire contents of vessels even in difficult shaped containers. For this reason the Ultramix is also ideal for use in vessels with narrow openings and offers considerable advantages for customers using IBCs (tote bins).
The Ultramix is able to draw materials from the top and bottom of the vessel into the workhead where centrifugal force then projects the materials outwards, subjecting them to a shearing action as they pass through the radial slots in the mixing head, allowing it to rapidly incorporate large volumes of powder.

Simple emulsions are either oil dispersed in an aqueous phase or water dispersed in oil.
To create a stable emulsion and stop your emulsion from separating, you need to add an emulsifier. An emulsifier has a hydrophilic (water liking) end and a lipophilic (oil liking) end. The hydrophilic end is attracted to the aqueous phase and lipophilic end to the oil phase, and this binds them together.
You also need something that can impart a large amount of energy, like a high shear rotor/stator mixer. Unlike a conventional agitator which just moves the two liquid phases around, the high shear mixer sucks the liquids into the workhead and forces them out through the holes in the stator which reduces them to a fine globule size. After a few minutes of intense high-energy mixing the two phases are finely and uniformly dispersed – and a stable emulsion is formed.
To find out more about emulsions, visit our website: silverson.com/us/process/emulsifying
It is widely used for its gelling, thickening and stabilising effect on emulsions and suspensions and often blended with other rheology modifiers, particularly Xanthan gum as the two combine to give greatly increased effects.
If you’re using a conventional agitator the powder must be added carefully at a controlled rate to reduce the formation of agglomerates – but it becomes increasingly difficult to incorporate the powder as viscosity increases.
Some formulations contain unnecessarily high levels of gum to compensate for poor yield due to filtering out of agglomerates.
Silverson high shear mixers can produce an agglomerate-free dispersion in a fraction of the time taken by conventional agitators. With all Silverson mixers, maximized yield can allow products to be reformulated with reduced gum content, cutting raw material costs and process times.

A number of active ingredients are used in the manufacture of hand sanitizers, however the most effective sanitizing products are based on alcohol, usually isopropyl or ethyl alcohol. Typically the alcohol content of hand sanitizer products is between 60 and 95%.
The alcohol is usually blended with an aqueous dispersion of carbomers such as Carbopol to provide the gelling effect, although some products are lower viscosity for use in foam dispensers.
One of the key steps in the manufacturing process is preparation of the gel. Obtaining an agglomerate-free dispersion is essential to ensure a clear, bright gel after neutralisation but low density powders such as Carbopol can be difficult to incorporate into liquids with a conventional agitator, and this can lead to dusting problems and aeration.
The high shear mixing of a Silverson mixer ensures rapid incorporation and dispersion of powders to form an agglomerate-free solution, with minimized aeration.
To find out more, read our application report on Hand Sanitizers:
silverson.com/us/resource-library/application-reports/manufacture-of-hand-sanitizers
Products need to be homogeneous for a variety of reasons: they look better; they have a better texture when you eat them or rub them on your skin; they will remain stable – and therefore have a longer shelf life.
Silverson Mixer/Homogenizers can achieve a globule or droplet size in the range of 2 – 5 microns which is sufficient for the vast majority of products including creams, ointments, sauces and pharmaceutical suspensions.
Where sub-micron particle size is required a High Pressure Homogenizer would be needed, however a Silverson Mixer/Homogenizer can help to improve the throughput by producing a uniform premix that will allow the high pressure homogenizer to operate more efficiently, reducing process time and costs.

It is important to note that while a food-grade Xanthan gum was used in this demonstration, results may vary depending on the brand and grade of gum utilized. The mixing system will also play a crucial role in the final viscosity obtained as inadequate dispersion and hydration can cause agglomerates in the mix which will ultimately reduce the thickening effect's efficacy.
This example illustrates the viscosity and flow characteristics that can be expected with maximized yield when a solution is prepared using a Silverson mixer.

This video is a simple guide to the different viscosity (thickness) of everyday products. This guide is useful for gauging the viscosity of the product you are mixing, all products shown in this video can be processed using a Silverson mixer.
All the samples were tested in the Silverson Laboratory using a Brookfield LDV-E Viscometer.
This should not be confused with Polyvinyl Acetate, also known as PVA.
The powder is readily soluble in water, but as the water temperature is increased the powder begins to swell and become sticky which causes agglomerates in the mix.
With a Silverson mixer you can disperse PVA into hot water, adding the powder as rapidly as the machine will take it in - a massive saving in processing time.
The Silverson mixer is able to finely disperse the powder ensuring rapid solubilisation and an agglomerate-free mix.
