In this video I’m gonna be showing you two ways of using the SP-404 MKII as an external effect in Ableton Live - The first one has the advantage that it doesn’t require a separate audio interface because we’re gonna be using the SP-404 MKII itself as one.
The second method does require an audio interface with 2 pairs of stereo outputs but it's more flexible and also may be better for Windows users, since the SP-404 MKII doesn't come with its own low latency ASIO drivers.

In this video, I’m showing my beat making workflow on the SP-404 MKII and honestly I’m still quite slow on this machine, partly because some things are objectively slow to do on it, compared to Maschine or Ableton Live. Maybe you can’t tell from the video because I’ve cut all the mistakes so it doesn’t get too long but it took me quite a long time to make this beat. But it’s still quite a fun device to make beats on and for this session all the samples that I used come from my latest sample pack “The Heat”.

Buy Orba 2

Orba 2 by Artiphon.
It’s a handheld, battery powered synth, looper, sequencer, drum machine, etc. and you can make you own little tracks on it. It has a built-in speaker. It’s quite beginner friendly, but also has some advanced features such as being an MPE-enabled controller for your software and it also has its own programmable synth engine than you can download and create your own presets on it.
A highlight feature of Orba 2 is sampling’s but but you cannot record samples from the device itself. This is done through the companion app for your computer or mobile device and then you transfer the sample to your Orba via a wired connection. Otherwise the companion app works via Bluetooth and is used for changing presets, changing the key of the parts that you’re playing - since these 8 pads are always set to play in a certain key and scale and some other basic tweaks. It’s in no way a deep app and this is more of a fun toy type of device - the kind if thing the you just pick up and play or a great Christmas gift for a musician or even someone with casual interest in music..
It’s fairly limited in its capabilities but for the price of $150 or Euro for Orba 2 and about $100 for Orba 1 it’s a reasonably capable device and really fresh concept by Artiphon.

I’ll do a brief overview of the MK3, give you a summary of its pros and cons and in the end, I’m going to I’ve you my buying recommendation, I’ll mention some alternatives that you can consider and answer the question - should you get an MK3 now or wait for an updated version.
Maschiine MK3 was released in 2017 with a very slick redesigned hardware interface - big bright colour displays, borrowed from the larger Maschine Studio, even better and bigger pads and last but not least - a built-in high quality audio interface.

Ableton have released their first ever iOS app called Note. In this video I’ll explain what it’s all about, show the beat making workflow of the app, and share my first impressions of it and it’s pros and cons. It’s a great app but it does miss some important features that will hopefully be added at some point.
So what’s the deal with Note? Is it Ableton for your iPhone? Not quite - it’s more of a sketchpad app for quickly capturing musical ideas on the go and then using the new Ableton Cloud to transfer these creations to the mothership - the Ableton Live application on your computer - where you can develop your ideas further. The app has some nice features and even some of the sounds and devices from Live. This means that when you transfer your tracks to the computer they are not just audio but you have the actual devices in Live generating and processing sounds.

More detailed review of Kontakt 7 by Jef Gibbons: youtu.be/XljW7c9IGX8
Kontakt 7 comes out as a standalone product in the beginning of October, but you can already get it as part of Native Instruments Komplete 14
The highlights of this update are the brand-new browser, that makes it a lot faster and easier to find instruments and presets. It’s resize-able it has sound previews, and you can filter presets by categories. You can now also add non-official 3rd party libraries to the browser.
Perhaps the most useful and exciting update is the updated instrument library - Kontakt Factory Library 2, which adds a lot new content - brand new collections like the Orchestral library and newly recorded sounds for existing libraries.
Some people may be disappointed that the actual instrument creation interface hasn’t been updated. While it’s can definitely benefit from an update to make it resizable and bigger on hi-res displays, I can understand why Native Instruments have focused on the factory library and browsing experience. This seems to be an update focused on the end user and the way I see it Kontakt isn’t really the quick sampler that you will pull up while you’re making music and quickly load up a sample into it and use it on the spot. For this purpose I always reach for Ableton’s Simpler and other DAW have their own versions of this type of quick sampler.
So the interface in question seems to be used more by instrument library creators to meticulously craft playable instruments and for them this update adds some new effects and small under-the-hood changes to the audio engine.
But overall the updated library is awesome and very useful to cover all bases in terms of sounds that you may need. While these are not the insanely detailed hyper realistic multi-gigabyte instruments, they are extremely useable and nice sounding. Not everyone needs an 80 gb orchestral library, but it’s good to have a variety of quality sounds at your disposal and that library covers everything from synths, to drums, to exotic instruments, to bread and butter pianos, strings, acoustic instruments, etc.

There are 2 main ways for recording the audio output of your DAW inside your Mac for the purpose of creating tutorials or beat making videos. If you have an audio interface with a loopback feature you already have this option right out of the box. If not, there’s a free way which works with any audio interface or even with the built-in sound card on the Mac and in this video I will give you step by step instructions on how to set it up.
You can also use this for sampling from any application on your Mac, such as YouTube in your browser, Spotify, Apple Music, etc.

It’s an awesome upgrade from v 9 with some of the main new features being the vastly improved Mastering Assistant which is now much closer to actually automatically giving you a good quality final master, rather than a starting point like in older versions and the new Stabilizer and Impact modules.

I finally got my hands on the most hyped piece of gear in the sampling and beat making community - the Roland SP-404 MKII. In this video I gonna be showing you my beat making process on the 404, including sampling, chopping, sequencing, adding a bass line using the chromatic mode and even playing and recording an external instrument while the beat is playing. Yes you can do all of these on the SP-404 MKII but it’s quite a weird beast, so if you’re considering getting one or if you already got one, pay close attention to this video.

Get Concrete Sun ► bit.ly/3wr60aX
In this video I’m showing you the process of making a Japanese influenced lo-fi boom bap beat on the Maschine MK3, using the newly released Expansion Concrete Sun. This Expansion captures the vibes of Japanese hip-hop and it’s not limited to the style of beat that we’re gonna be making today, it’s has sounds ranging from trap to lo-fi and everything in-between but with that inimitable Japanese spin on these styles. Check out the affiliate link above for more info and audio demos.

In this SP404 beat making video I'm showing you how to use the pattern sequencer on the OG SP404 to sequence samples and make a beat.
Most people seem to be using the resampling method instead of the pattern sequencer to make beats, so i figured I'd try to use it and see if I like it before I jump on the SP404 MKII, which is still a bit hard to get here in Europe.

In this video I'm making a beat with Native Instruments Electric Mint.
NI sent me this very realistic guitar instrument several weeks ago and I’ve used ti in a couple of tracks and I’m really diggin' it. You can customise every single aspect of the guitar lines it provides, so It’s like having a virtual guitar player in your studio. And it’s incredibly versatile in terms of the styles you can get out of it and the sounds are very easy to fit in your tracks.

Is the Ableton Push 2 still worth buying in 2023? Or should you wait for the Push 3? The Push 2 was released in 2015 to replace the original Push manufactured by Akai and people have been saying that Push 3 is coming any moment now for years. And yet, here we are - it’s 2023 and still no signs of a 3rd iteration.
I bought mine 5 years ago and in this video I’m gonna give you my impressions of it as a long term user. I’m going to explain how it works and what is its primary use, its main selling point, the build quality and feel, a brief overview of its functionality and features, a summary of its pros and cons (and there are 2 problems that it has that very few people seem to talk about.) and finally my recommendation if it’s worth buying, or if you should wait for the Push 3.

In the late 80’s and through the 90’s had to work hard to find and manipulate samples which created a sort of a magical and mystical atmosphere around the whole sampling and crate digging culture. Nowadays it's just so easy to obtain and manipulate amazing sounding samples.
Has sampling lost its magic and has it become too easy?
