While growing up in East Los Angeles, I often dreamed of travelling. As a child, I loved reading and writing. Books were my passport to the world. My fascination with great apes stems from childhood. When I first saw the movie “King Kong,” I fell in love with the legendary “King of the Apes.” I thought that no one understood him like I did.Now, my favorite place to be is in the rainforest, photographing gorillas, orangutans, and other primates. My husband and I travel to some of the remotest places on earth, including Borneo, Rwanda, Nepal, India, Costa Rica, and the Amazon. I eventually wrote a book called “Among the Orangutans” and now I work as an author and a photographer, and go into schools talking to kids about orangutans.I’m Mexican-American and Hopi. My great grandfather was a curandero, a folk healer. And he used to tell me wonderful stories about the plants and animals. My great grandfather helped to nurture my love of nature.I write for children to help them discover that they do have the power to create positive changes. I also encourage them to pursue science and writing careers. In 1984 I wrote a letter from the heart to Dr. Dian Fossey, saying that I wanted to volunteer to help her in her struggle to save the mountain gorillas. Dian responded with an invitation to her research center in Rwanda.My wildest dream, to help the real King Kong came about through the power of writing. Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Trekking Seeing Baby Mountain Gorillas was the Experience of a Lifetime Discovery Beach House 2017-09-11 | What an experience of a lifetime we had mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda. We absolutely loved seeing the young baby gorillas playing in the Rwanda rain forest. We just came off our gorilla trek and wanted to share our experience with you, with our guest moderator Eric Butera.We were here in Rwanda in 1985, volunteering for a month with Dian Fossey, and the mountain gorillas. When we came back, we only had one hour with the gorillas, and we were thinking, “Oh that’s so little time.” But, we were wrong. It was magical.Seeing the gorillas up close again, with some of the adults taking naps while the young ones seemed to be an a very active play date. They are the cutest baby animals we’ve ever met. They were crawling over the father who was sleeping and swinging out of the trees, and swinging like it was magic. Mountain gorilla babies are the cutest baby animal in the world.Please come to Rwanda and see the gorillas. The government and the Rwanda Development Board, and the Dian Fossey Fund, are all working together, doing such an amazing job. When you buy your mountain gorilla permit, it goes to improve the situation for the gorillas and the people of Rwanda. Rwanda is trying to expand the mountain gorilla habitat, while helping the local people that surround the mountain by revenue sharing with the locals that are impacted the most. Rwanda is giving the people who want to grow crops 10% of the revenue because they are unable to grow crops while the government is expanding the gorilla habitat. When you stay in the tree house room, you have a 360-degree view of the rainforest if all the curtains are pulled up. The guests called to everyone in the house about the sloth they saw climbing down from the trees. Everyone ran outside and as they got closer, saw a mama sloth and baby sloth coming down to go to the bathroom.Watch the video to learn why this was actually a very rare moment for the guests to see. They made balls of food for the elephants, made from fruits, grains, and corn.These were all retired elephants. Retired from tourism, from the logging industry, from circuses, from zoos, and they all come to the Elephant Nature Park to live out the rest of their lives in comfort. It’s like elephant heaven for them because they’re pampered, bathed, and fed.
