A fascinating oral history with graphics, this is a delightful sharing of stories of exuberant activism between two exceptionally accomplished elders of our times.Both men authored books selling in the millions, both have made social and political contributions that changed the course of history. Both are planetary treasures.Jerry Mander is the founder of the country’s first nonprofit ad agency in 1971, Public Media Center, which ran advertising and publicity campaigns for Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, and various indigenous and antiwar groups. These campaigns included the celebrated Sierra Club campaigns (with David Brower) that kept dams out of the Grand Canyon, established a Redwood National Park, and stopped production of the Supersonic Transport (SST).Legendary litigator, Jim Turner was an original (Ralph) Nader’s Raider, who went on to found organizations and legal precedents that among many others, protected public access to organic food, acupuncture, homeopathy, redress against vaccine injury or death, alternatives to mercury in teeth and most recently, protection against harmful radiofrequency radiation beamed from satellites in low earth orbit. He passed away January 25, 2022.We’re honored and grateful that Jim and his life and law partner Betsy Lehrfeld have been founding board members of our non-profit organization, EON, the Ecological Options Network.
Golden Gate Health Freedom Rally - Speaker Highlights eon3 2021-12-07 | The Health Freedom Rally held at San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge Plaza on November 11, 2021 - sponsored by the Children's Health Defense California Chapter - brought together informed and passionate speakers from across the political, ethnic and racial spectrum united in their opposition to Covid lockdown and injection mandates. Crowd estimates ran between 300 and as high as 3 thousand at the peak. (We didn't get video of the peak crowd.) Authorities' efforts to block attendance resulted in a late afternoon traffic jam snarling the region, one fender bender, and a few minor injuries, which some initial news reports attempted unsuccessfully to blame on the peaceful non-violent protesters. The Legacy of Noel Marquez - A Video Tribute - Updated eon3 2021-03-10 | The Legacy of Noel Marquez - A Video TributeNoel Marquez, 67, passed away Dec. 23, 2020. In the brief time we were honored to know him, we were touched, like all who worked with him, by his open heart and deep commitment to environmental justice, democratic rights and our responsibility to future generations. He was a Good Ancestor in every sense of the words. Noel Marquez won the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts for his many murals depicting the plight of the state’s indigenous people and his beloved land. Noel was also a dedicated and effective community organizer for nuclear safety and indigenous rights. He identified himself as a community artist, small-time farmer and most importantly, the father of his beloved daughter Pai. He is survived by his partner, respiratory therapist Madelene Aguinaldo, and their daughter, Paikea ‘Pai’ Marquez, 14. As our video shows, Pai has already begun to follow in her father’s activist footsteps.We offer this short video of two talks by Noel (and one of Pai’s) to honor his persistent effective advocacy, his pride as Pai’s father, and to show a glimpse of his community creativity and his inspiring and masterful mural art. Rev. Nobuaki Hanaoka eon3 2019-12-17 | Nobuaki Hanaoka, the special guest speaker, was an infant when the bomb fell on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. His mother and sister died from illnesses linked to radiation poisoning and his brother died at age 39 from premature aging associated with fallout from the bomb. Rev. Hanaoka is a retired minister in the United Methodist Church, who came to the U.S. following seminary training in Japan. He has settled in the Bay Area where he speaks, writes and teaches on topics of peace and human rights. Rev. Hanaoka will present the “Hibakusha Appeal” and solicit signatures from participants.
Marylia Kelley eon3 2019-12-17 | Marylia Kelley addresses Livermore Lab’s role in promoting a new, destabilizing global arms race. She is Executive Director at the Livermore-based Tri-Valley CAREs and brings 36 years of research, writing and facilitating public participation in decisions regarding the Lab and the U.S. nuclear weapons complex. Kelley has testified before the House Armed Services Committee of the U.S. Congress, the California Legislature and the National Academy of Sciences, among other deliberative bodies. She has lived in Livermore since 1976. Kelley was inducted into the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2002.
Rafael Jesús González eon3 2019-12-17 | Rafael Jesús González offers poetry and insight into the movement for nuclear disarmament. He is the City of Berkeley’s first Poet Laureate and an organizer of the 1983 International Day of Nuclear Disarmament. González has taught at the Univ. of Oregon, Western State College of Colorado, Central Washington State Univ., Univ. of Texas, and Laney College in Oakland, where he founded the Department of Mexican and Latin-American Studies. His poetry and academic articles appear in reviews and anthologies in the U. S., Mexico, and abroad. In 2013 he received the César E. Chávez Lifetime Award. The City of Berkeley honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
Dr. Sharat G. Lin eon3 2019-12-17 | Dr. Sharat G. Lin speaks on current nuclear flashpoints. He is a research fellow and past President of the San José Peace and Justice Center. Lin writes and lectures on global political economy, labor migration, social movements, and public health. Last August he delivered an apology from the American people to the Japanese people for the U.S. atomic bombings at mass rallies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A medical radiation scientist by training, Lin has connections to the nuclear energy programs in Iran and India, providing him with inside knowledge of the decision-making behind those programs. His insights on the nuclear calculations of Iran and North Korea are reinforced by personal visits to these countries, and provide a vision for denuclearization.

Is Edison Out of Compliance with its License Requirements? eon3 2019-08-12 | SoCal Edison is out of compliance with its San Onofre nuclear fuel waste storage licenses. Doug Bauder, San Onofre Chief Nuclear Officer, admitted in this video that Southern California Edison cannot unload thin-wall nuclear fuel waste canisters back into the spent fuel pools. He said it's been done with a bolted lid thick-wall cask, but does not believe it's ever been done with a thin-wall welded canister. Bauder said it's unproven technology and there is "no pathway for success" to unload spent nuclear fuel canister back into the pool. [There are over 3000 spent nuclear fuel canisters and casks loaded around the country as of April 2019. Most of these are thin-wall welded canisters]. Scott Morris, NRC Region IV administrator, admits to Donna Gilmore, SanOnofreSafety.org, that it is a license requirement [Condition 8 of their Holtec license] to unload fuel back into the pool. Morris admitted this would make Edison out of compliance with their storage licenses. This video clip is from the June San Onofre Community Engagement Panel (CEP) meeting, The conversation between Scott Morris and Donna Gilmore, SanOnofreSafety.org, was recorded immediately after the meeting. The Holtec dry storage system license requires that a canister that drops over 11" must be opened and inspected inside for damage. Holtec almost dropped a San Onofre canister 18 feet -- twice. In spite of all this, the NRC is allowing more Holtec canisters to be loaded with spent nuclear fuel. Bauder stated that unloading canisters is not a requirement of San Onofre's NRC licenses. This is not true. The NRC gives exemptions to this safety requirement only after all fuel is in dry storage. This NRC license exemption leaves the fuel stranded with no method on-site to handle cracking or leaking canisters or retrieve the spent nuclear fuel. Bauder's suggested solution to use an overpack to store a cracked canister. He doesn't mention the NRC has no overpacks approved for this purpose. Thin-wall canisters require convection cooling. Storing a hot thin-wall canister in an overpack eliminates the required cooling system, causing the canister to overheat. The only other option to handle spent nuclear fuel is in a "hot cell" facility. This is a dry fuel handling facility where fuel is handled remotely in a room filled with an inert gas. The only hot cell available in the US large enough for this purpose (Idaho National Lab Test Area North (TAN) hot cell facility was destroyed in 2007. Bauder stated no decommissioning facility keeps their pools. Donna Gilmore saidCrystal River is keeping their pool. Bauder responded that Crystal River will be destroying their pool in decommissioning. However, Florida Public Utility records show Duke Energy is keeping the empty spent fuel pool so they can retrieve the fuel and repackage it as needed. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act requires monitored retrievable fuel storage. Thin-wall canisters do not meet that requirement. Therefore, the DOE cannot legally accept ownership of these uninspectable unmaintainable thin-wall canisters. Only thick-wall casks can meet the NWPA safety requirements for storage and transport.
