Last week Jefferson County Sheriffs Office announced their Blue Envelope Program. TPU v PETG settings #shorts 3D-PT 2025-01-27 | This is part of the Chainmail links that I'm printing in TPU. I noticed a difference between printers and settings on this print. The other links are printed on a TAz Pro with TPU settings, and they have a lot of boogers and take time to process. But on the TAZ 5 using PETG settings the prints are a lot better quality (I have feed issues, I'm not using a filastruder.)What could cause the differences in print quality? Right now Taz 5''s are printing better than Pro.

Chain Mail TPU #shorts 3D-PT 2025-01-18 | Here is a quick update on my chain mail project. I printed a couple batches at 105% scale, and that's enough to start the sleeve of a shirt. It will take about 15 panels like this to make a men's XL shirt. To cut time, I used TinkerCAD to blow the links up to 200% scale, and resize it for printing. Printed in Ninjatech Armadilo TPU. It's the hardest shore grade of TPU they have, I figured it would be good to test with it before going to softer TPU's. What they dont tell you about 3d printing: MOARtool heads 3D-PT 2024-11-08 | High volume printing is a way to shorten time when you don't care about smooth surfaces or layer lines. This file went from 14 hrs on a standard Taz 5 tool head (0.5 mm nozzle) to 8 hrs with a MOARstruder (1.5 mm nozzle) It looks rough, but for the time and application I was fine with it. This was printed with Colorfabb VaraShore TPU. The ligher bands of color where where I printed it too hot at 220 C, darker bands at 200 C.This is NOT sponsored by Lulzbot. Things they Dont Tell you About 3d Printing Pt1: Support Removal 3D-PT 2024-10-30 | Post processing is the fun part of 3D printing you don't see. Here the support material for some magnets is removed. If your slicer settings are good, the supports should pop out. But if they are off, or your Z offsets on the printer are wrong, you just fused the supports to your print. I avoid supports whenever possible in my design, but for this shape I used 15% line density with a brim in Cura for Lulzbot. The prints are a part of my new Magnetic DNA / RNA Manipulative Set! Things they Dont Tell you About #3dprinting: Waste Products 3D-PT 2024-10-27 | A sales point on 3D printing is that it produces far less waste products compared to subtractive manufacturing. This is absolutely true. Misprints and brims make up the bulk of the waste. In this shorts I show a comparison of how much waste is produced compared to the filament I've consumed. The box has about 5 lbs (2 kg) worth of misprints, brims and other printing waste. Compare that to to the 11 kg of PLA printed, and the waste is about 18% of production. In the future I'd like to grind it all down and recycle it into new PLA filament.

Things they Dont Tell you About #3dprinting: Dirty Build Plates #shorts 3D-PT 2024-10-09 | #3dprinting takes some maintenance. I use PVA glue stick (Elmers glue) , which I get for sale once the school supplies go onto the discount shelf at the grocery store. If you get the purple one, it changes color when it's wet so you can see it. Yes, scraping it up is disgusting purple slime. If your prints are not sticking to your build plate even though you used glue, there may be too much or it's too flakey for the filament to stick. I like PVA because it's water soluble and easy to clean. Just pour some water over it, let it soak and than scrap off.

Things They Dont tell you About #3dprinting : How to Un-warp PLA 3D-PT 2024-09-04 | In a couple previous #shorts I found out that PLA prints warp in a hot car, and then tried to use the same hot car to fix the issue. It helped, but many of the PLA magnets I made still were warped badly. So for a last try, I used boiling water and a cookie tray to flatten them out. This actually worked great and I was able to recover the prints so I could sell them! To answer the safety questions: 1. I don't use that sauce pan anyway, yes I'll wash it before I put it away. Same with the cookie tray. 2. The dish cloth doesn't get hot enough to burn. The prints are mostly Colorfabb Economy PLA and GlowFill. The magnets I sell at #autism fairs.

Things They Dont Tell you About #3dprinting : Hot Cars and PLA 3D-PT 2024-08-06 | I had a bunch of these 3D prints in a box in the trunk of my car. With the recent heat wave in Colorado, of course they got hot enough for the PLA to get floppy and warp. I sell these magnets at local fairs, so I needed a way to make them flat again. Well, if a hot car got me into this mess, a hot car can get me out of it. I laid all of them down in the trunk, and let the sun do the rest. After a day in the sun, many of them returned to close to their original shape. 'll leave them in the back a couple more days to try to flatten the rest. After that I'll have to use the oven or food dehydrator. Lesson here is 1. Clean out your car. 2. Don't leave PLA prints in car during the day.
#Autism Decal Program from Boulder Police Department #shorts 3D-PT 2024-08-06 | Boulder Police Department (BPD) just announced an Autism decal program. This program gives family members decals they can place around their homes and cars to try to inform BPD that they will be interacting with someone on the spectrum. BPD is currently offering the decals in person at the records office (which is open during business hours, so many people will not be able to access them) and currently there are no guidelines on where to put the decals. The press release did not mention how BPD officers are to respond when they see the decal. This is a new program, and a lot of details have to be worked out before I can say this is a positive or negative program. The use of the infinity symbol or puzzle piece is also concerning here. BPD is issuing both and leaving it up to the individual to chose their own decal, which is a bit of a cop out. There is a lot of mixed feelings about why the Autism Community needs this, and why we don't like the implementation. Before companies like CookieCAD and esun came out with rainbow and dual color filament, your option were single color. Then someone realized that your hot end is just an extruder which can print a new batch of filament. I've wanted to try this method forever, finally have something I'd like to print with it. If you make a spiral with the filament the diameter, you can then pause the print half way and swap colors!
